Boring Monday Ramble
As always, if you're looking for any meaning whatsoever below, don't bother.
Just another ramble out of the old west.
Concerning "Waves": If you are reading this and at any time feel that it is just terrible and not worth your time, please, discontinue reading and click to another post. It's really quite easy, just move your wrist a tiny amount and press twice with your index finger. Thanks.
Today, Troy Palomolu's wife was mentioned somewhere and I decided to Google her image and found this nice piece about her:
Wow, is that long. Anyway, she seems like a very intelligent and good person.
I also hit the Steelers.com website and looked through pictures ( http://www.steelers.com/video-and-audio/photo-gallery/2010-Pittsburgh-Steelers-Mini-Camp/e304adee-a260-4c2d-94be-47b3320c202b) of the last mini-camp. A few observations:
Picture #5: It's good to see MCFadden back at practice.
#20: Look at the size of Dixon's hands. The ladies will be particularly interested in this trait.
#25: Oh man, this guys legs make Dixon look like a power lifter.
# 28: Bruce Ariens just told Hines Ward he would be assistant coach of the year this year.
#37: A nice picture of this years late round favorite, Johnathan Dwyer. Look at the calves on that guy.
#39: A demonstration of just how skinny the defensive backs legs are. They all look like they have been in wheel chairs for years (Think Avatar).
#41: Here you will see a picture of what has been reported, Urbik snapping the football. Boy, is that intriguing. Are they doing this just for some positional flexibility, or does Kugler see some possibility there?
#48: This is a picture of this years first round choice. Pouncey looks to be quite the physical specimen. He really doesn't look like a lineman in this picture, which suggests his ability to move well for a big man.
#51: This is the first picture of kugler. In all the pictures of him, he seems to be teaching something by showing his players. I'm really hoping he helps the line make a quantum leap this year.
#52: I ask you: Which one of these guys doesn't belong in the picture? (Little Sesame Street reference there, in case Chad Johnson is reading) The answer? Woodley, but not why you think. It's because he is the only one with only one Super Bowl ring.
#56: Ziggy demonstrates that if you are a former number one round pick you can get away with looking over at the lunch buffet while everyone else is paying attention.
#57: In this picture, Randy Fitchner explains how he got his first coaching job.
#66: Here we see Stefen Logan catching the ball. Is there a chance to turn this guy into a Wes Welker type?
#68: I know he is in space all by himself, but Sylvester looks really small.
#70: Thadius Gibson looks like he is playing offensive line. I know he is raw an inexperienced, but he does know he plays defense, right?
#79: Just after this picture, the tackling dummy ran Gay over.
#80: Do you think they included this picture to prove what everyone was thinking wrong?
#92: I think several people noticed Tomlin gaining weight last year. Here he looks like he is back in tip-top form. Maybe he is setting an example for Casey.
Onward:
If you read MMQB you will have noticed Peter King writing another article from his knees about Tom Brady. When will I ever learn?
I love the fact that the Bengals signed Adam "Packman" Jones. My biggest hope is that he takes out the whole defensive backfield some night and they all get arrested. In the near future they will be taking their team picture in prison stripes.
There have been some writings in the press that suggest that Ben may be exhibiting poor behavior because of his many head traumas. At first I thought, B.S. But after some thought, I remembered when my cousin's boy had a sever concussion. He exhibited several behavioral problems, including running outside in the middle of the night and climbing trees. My cousin did the research, and asked the doctors, and they said that it is quite common to have behavioral problems after a concussion. As well, he talked to several people who told him that sometime after a concussion, almost from one day to another, they could think much clearer. I'm not saying this is what happened to Ben, or is happening, but it is food for thought.
I've been reading the blogs lately, and someone needs another hobby to go along with writing on BTSC. How about Photography? It is very relaxing and can take a large amount of free time. No? How about Mountain Biking? It is good for getting your exercise, and also takes up a lot of free time. Not athletic? How about shooting? It is more relaxing than you think and will come in very handy when you finally tip over the edge of sanity.
I read something where the writer disparages the Rooneys over the Big Ben situation and something totally inescapable occurred to me: There are big Ben fans out there that are Ben fans first, and Steelers fans second. Yeah, it blew my mind too. I'm not saying it's wrong, it had just never occurred to me before.
Mr. Bean, would you please look into making you anthem available on Kindle? Please?
Okay, I'm done.
Go Steelers.
P.S. The angry beaver is cracking me up!

Wore it too, the reserve TE from PSU who was on the team in 05-06. I think receiver numbers being scarce makes them stay out of the sacred bundle of semi-retired numbers. 36 is not being given out either, btw. I sure hope 86 joins the lot, though…

He is the only guy I ever heard a Steeler player say he didn't like playing because he was so physical.
it wasn't Donnie Shell
remember that jacked up before there was jacked up when he destroyed Earl on MNF?

This is fine post
No waves for you.
I look at Sylvester and wonder if I am seeing a SS in development. Is 4.71 fast enough for the role? I’m still too much of a noob to know this.
How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

He’s built a lot like Derrick Brooks. I think that is what Tomlin sees in him, a little bit of Derrick Brooks, and that is not a bad thing.

If Sylvester (tweety?) = Derrick Brooks
I can live with that.

My goodness if he could be 1/2 of Derrick Brooks he’d be a serious steal.

with our history of getting good OLB'S
in the late rounds, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these guys from the 2010 draft class went on to super star status.
1/2 DB would be something else. Great player and seems like a great guy with all his foundation work, etc.
"The Steelers drafted guys who were bigger, stronger and faster than I, but they never found one who could take my job away from me." Jack Lambert
No Cold Old
Not fast enough in today’s NFL. I thought he ran a 4.65 at his pro day, but still, Sylvester is a special teams guy and he was drafted for that reason IMO. He’ll probably be the ninth LB.
Typically you want your skill players to run somewhere around 4.5 give or take a point. But those are track numbers, not always indicative of playing speed or playmaking ability. Apparently Jerry Rice ran in the high 4.6s and so did Emmitt Smith. Worked for those guys, I’d say!
Hi-5 is innocent!
Quick
I seem to remember that Sylvester is quick which for a short distance is better than pure speed anyway.
How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?
by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on May 11, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Absolutely
As you may know by now, I coach LBs, and what we look for is T-test time (I believe they call it the 20 yard shuttle in the NFL) which measures lateral agility. We look for the differential between the 40 and the T-test and a good one is 0.5 seconds. Typically a good linebacker at the college level should have something around 4.7 in the forty and 4.2 in the T-test. That shows us he can move in the box and has the feet to either shed or evade blocks as well as press openings to make tackles behind the LOS.
As you said, short distance quickness is better than straight line speed. Explosion and short area quickness are a major part of the game when you play LB. Of course, the most important thing of all is reading speed, cause, as I tell my guys, 5.1 in the right direction is faster than 4.5 in the wrong direction!
Hi-5 is innocent!
speaking of speed
one of my boys ran his first timed 100 m today at 13 seconds. I thought it was slow but was told he tied for 1st (in a small field). This was interesting partly because last week he had been tops in his school for 1500 m and 3000 m. I didn’t think long speed and short speed went together. The other part that is interesting is that when he first started playing football (4 years ago) he was one of the slowest kids on his team. Only the kid built like a sloppy NT was slower iirc. His team arranged for my kids and a few of their teammates to work with a professional trainer during the off-season when he was 13. We sent the boys back there is winter and it seems to have paid off big time.
Before anyone gets excited, his school isn’t that large (K-8).

That happens
There’s a lot of technique involved in running. People can really improve their time with hard work. Specially kids.
May he who has never had drunken sex cast the first shot glass!
then there is still upside
As his trainer so far has been mostly giving them strength and endurance training with a little agility stuff thrown in but no technique with regards to running. I will be surprised if they have had more than minimal training in track.
Too bad their trainer is moving to Toronto in June. I assume we can go with the guy whose company it is but the guys really liked this guy.

There should be upside, yes
Our trainer is amazing, too bad you live so far cause he would have done way more than strength and endurance work (which by the way seems a bit off if the objective is make them better runners) and your kids would really have improved their times…
May he who has never had drunken sex cast the first shot glass!
lol
the objective was to make them better football players. The running stuff is just a surprise and a bonus.
