Rapid Reports Honeymoon Edition
I promised you rapid reports and I always deliver. Now a married man these reports will now be the same as they were before. :)
Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall on entering his third NFL season: "I feel a lot more comfortable. Last year was almost like my first year. After going through it, you know what to expect, you know how to train your body."
Well lets hope he feel comfortable. Mendenhall is going to be the key to our season this year. We're going to lean on him heavily the first couple of games and he should be the main offense at the beginning of the season. We need him to have another breakout year, as in 1500 yards this season.
Steelers LB Larry Foote on learning the defensive system again after a year away: "It's pretty much the same concept. You just have to freshen up mentally, because Dick LeBeau is always throwing new stuff in there.
Foote needs to take timmons spot and timmons should split time with Farrior at the Mack ILB position. We also are going to need foote to hold up in the passing game. It'll be interesting to see how this works out.
Steelers QB Charlie Batch when asked if he thinks he'll get a chance to be the starter: "I'd love to be the guy. All I can do is go through OTAs, once we go to camp, keep doing what I'm doing."
Sorry Batch but this is really a two man race. :)
Steelers K Adam Graessle has been doing most of the kickoffs at OTAs this week. Coach Mike Tomlin is seriously considering keeping a second kicker on the roster for kickoff duties
I say you only do this if you are comfortable only having a 52 man roster. Its hard for me to justify an extra kicker.
Steelers WR Hines Ward is still bothered by a strained hamstring, but he's not been idle. He's helping Mike Wallace transition into a starting role. "I want to help Mike's development as a wide receiver. Going into his second year, he has a lot on his shoulders."
Here is an injury update and a good little tid bit. I think we can get used to seeing Hines coming back from injury during the offseason as he continues to get up there in age. Lets just hope he works on Mike Wallace and his route running, this guy can be every bit as good as Santonio Holmes.
Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians on running the ball more this season: "At the end of the game, in the four-minute offense to run out the clock, and in the short yards, goal line are areas we have to me more efficient."
So he couldn't figure that out after week 2 of last year? I still don't like this guy but I understand why they kept him.
Steelers DE Brett Keisel and LB James Harrison returned to practice today. Still no official word as to why they were absent yesterday.
Another injury update, nothing to worry about there though.
Rookie RB Jonathan Dwyer broke off a long run at practice. When coach Mike Tomlin was asked about how Dwyer looked, Tomlin said, "He's a rookie, and we're in shorts."
Lets hope Dwyer still looks good in pads as his quest to beat out Jamarcuss Russell as the next big Bust in the NFL Draft.
KR Stefan Logan, who practiced as a WR last season, is now at RB. He played RB in the CFL before Pittsburgh signed him as a free agent in 2009.
I like putting Logan at RB, he has a better chance of making the team there as the only speedy back we'll have.
WR Isaiah Williams looks good. He's big, fast and fluid. It will be interesting to see how he does in a helmet and pads.
We need big, fast and fluid in our WR core, also need 'great hands'. :) See ya next week.

I like this statement from an article:
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians is showing off more two-back looks than usual, an apparent response to team president Art Rooney II’s proclamation that the running game—especially near the goal line—must be better. Last season, the fullback role was effectively filled by tight ends.
Hope has arrived! The change we need! Sorry, couldn’t resist. (Don’t ban me bro!)
Whether the change is because of the Rooney smackdown, Tomlin enforcing that, or Arians realizing the talent isn’t there for the greatest show on not-turf. Whatever it is:
Welcome Back Fullback!
Logan at RB, Like it. Covers the peed angle we need to complement Mendy and Dwyer/Redman. Mike Wallace, a running game will complement his speed so very nicely, he’ll do fine if we run well.
Kick off specialist? Well, position flexibility could allow that spot, but kill one of the one position backups (like keeping Redman Dwyer and Tank on the 53)
Almost forgot
Big props to your wife. Not many ladies are cool enough to allow these reports to continue. Much respect.

I think no one complains about KOs to the ten yard line
If our coverage gets down there and lays them out consistently…. then you drop the KO guy from the roster once MT feels comfortable. If kick coverage continues to be an issue, taking a spot for KO spclst might be needed because giving up 6 on kicks needs to stop or there will be more 9-7 seasons ahead.
Giving a free 5-10 yards on a KO, and therefore to the offense, is unacceptable IMO. We probably won’t ever be a extremely high scoring team, so field position is hugely important (especially in tight defensive battles like Baltimore and now Cinci). Our coverage was definitely porous in many spots last year, but giving up those yards is still a big deal.
The future is not what it used to be.
by John Stephens on May 24, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions
No I am not
But I don’t think we should just deem short kickoffs as ‘okay’.
But, as Tann said, if they are comfortable with a 52 man roster…by all means.

We have 52 roster spots because we have someone who can touchback on every kickoff spending a year learning how to kick effectively in Heinz Field then become our kicker next year for 1/5th of Reed’s F-Tag price?
I like the thought process there
I think they are working out a long term deal with Reed though. Personally, I wouldn’t care if Reed was shown the door.

The Ward hamstring really bothers me though. How often in the past 2-3 years have we heard about Ward’s hammy’s? Really can’t afford to have him miss time out there this year.

Hopefully, restricting him is precautionary
and when the season starts, he will be at full strength. With the youth at WR, we need his leadership on the field. We have ARE back, and Battle as veterans, but i do not think they can be the leaders on the field that Hines can.

Ok I see
I was drafted out of Hampton Roads Va in 1986. I had a hard time understanding the playbook so I would be benched a lot, but my performance on the field kept my job. I had to up my game when the 3 rookies came along. Well I fell on hard times. I started letting the groupies get to me and the coach suspended me. I lerarned my lesson and earned my spot back. Years later I was comeback player of the years and have now become a player coach. Let Favre know you don’t have to change teams to resurrect your career…He already knows you don’t have to retire…..

Good stuff in this post, too. The thing that jumps out at me is that Logan at RB may mean the end of Moore as a Steeler. Logan’s speed should be more effective for a 3rd down back, and if one of the rookies steps up to take over the KR/PR duties, I think that makes MeMo expendable. Anyway, we’ll see how it plays out, as always.

Logan at RB
I see this as a purely administrative move: yes, we need him on our roster, but talent-wise and physically, he’s a lot closer to WR than to RB. I remember seeing him play in the CFL (I’m a Montreal Alouettes season-ticket holder), but never thought of him as an NFL running back much. He’s a tough little SOB, for his size, but if we ever have to count on him for more than 5 RB touches per game, we’re in a LOT of trouble.

another montrealer!
nice! I just moved up here from PA (born here though)
I dunno why logan wasn’t at RB to begin with, 5’8" seems to be about the limit to play WR.
Only question re: 3rd down back, can he block?
"all my bitches, take some shots!"
Logan RB
I think he could run and catch. I think he would block with enthusiasm (though little success).
How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

This is where Mewelde would beat him
For the rest, running and catching, he could be a bit more dynamic than MM. So Logan’s a tweener: not big enough to be a RB, not tall enough for a WR. And yet, he could surprise us.
Actually, I live 120 miles away in Gatineau, but I’m a native Montrealer indeed.

I went to the Gatineau once
I drove around all afternoon but couldn’t find the mountains ;-)

Know that joke about the Englishman...
…who went up the hill and came down a mountain, or something like that? He settled in the Gatineau Hills afterward, in Chelsea, I believe ;-)

never been to gatineau
i really need to travel around my province more. I haven’t been to Quebec city since I was a little kid, and we went whale watching up north somewhere too.
Still getting settled in Montreal, THE BEST CITY IN NORTH AMERICA
"all my bitches, take some shots!"
I dunno
I used to love Vancouver when I lived there. I think I need to spend more time in Montreal. Maybe the wife and I will get out there when the kids are all grown up and moved out.

I almost forgot
I actually like Ottawa. That may make me a miscreant or something.

Nope...
…merely boring ;-)
Quebecers have a joke about the City of Ottawa rolling in the sidewalks at night, to explain the quiet nightlife there. Of course, if you cross the river, you find it in Gatineau, instead. But we’re still far from the Little Chicago days of Hull in the 1930s-1940s.

Sigh
I am boring.
I never was all that much on clubs nor dancing. I would rather visit friends than go to a bar (at least since I turned 18). I may be one of the few adult males on this site who has never picked up a woman in a bar.

Gatineau! Great canadian bungee...!
I went, I saw, I jumped. That was insane, and Ive skydived from 11k feet. That bungee jump was more terrifying.

RB
Remember Dave Meggett? He was about Logan’s size, IIRC, and he used to drive me crazy on 3rd downs when he was with the Giants.

i doubt he would get more than 5-7 anyway
mendenhall gets at least 20-25, logan 5-7, and dwyer or redman 3-5 (goal line carries). thats over 30 runs per game so we should be good after that.
