Non Football Related; Game 7 The Super Bowl Of the NBA

It happens only once in a while in the world of the NBA or MLB. All the other teams are at home, the schedule has been all played out and there are only 2 teams left standing. The series stands at 3 games each and it's win or go home for everybody. There truly is no tomorrow. Thursday night at Staples Center in the City Of Angels the defending World Champion Los Angeles Lakers will defend their home court and title against the champions of the season before Boston Celtics. Two storied franchises set for a blood bath battle for the ages. I will be in my usual spot in section 106 wearing my purple Robert Horry 5 and reveling in the atmosphere and the experience.

Star-divide

Thursday night should be great TV and even better in person. A usually tame Staples Center will be electric and filled with TNT energy. With Perkins hurt and Bynum hobbled the teams are finally at equal strength in the front court. Garnett, Allen and Pierce may be playing their last games together and will surely be ready to step up together with a closing kick. On the other side the Black Mamba KB24 smells a 5th Championship. The ultimate closer in sports will be just that. This could be Phil Jackson's last game so look for the Lakers to come out strong to protect his legacy. With Perkins in doubt I look for Gasol to be world class. Fisher will make several HUGE plays. This should be epic.

I have been lucky enough to be present at The Fabulous Forum in 1987 the last time a Lakers team closed out Boston in a Finals but that was Game 6. Watching Kareem Abdul Jabaar sink 2 FTs with seconds left in a Game 6 114-113 win against Detroit in 1988 was an awesome moment. Even more so, I saw Big Game James Worthy pour in 38 points against the Bad Boys as the Lakers closed out Detroit in Game 7 for a second straight title two nights later. Again in 2000 in our new home at the corner of Figueroa and Chick Hearn Court I reveled in a Game 6 thrashing of Indiana. With those great experiences in my belt and offers in the thousands for my ducats I know it is not enough. These are the memories and experiences a true sports nut cherishes forever. Thursday night at Staples I will be savoring whatever is in store for my Los Angeles Lakers. We love it!!

I can't stand Boston....please win L.A.

5 reasons:

1. Can’t stand Rasheed Wallace’s running around and crying every time a foul is called on him. He is the king of the technical and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets another one tomorrow night. He took 7 shots last game – 6 from behind the arc. Missed all of them. With Perkins out, he especially needs to be the big man, and here he is launching 3’s. Dumb and selfish. Which brings me to my next reason…

2. Perkins is a punk – not glad he’s hurt, but glad he’s not playing. There’s another technical foul specialist. The guy is lucky they called back one of the technicals on him else he’d have been suspended a game. Another selfish guy that can’t control his temper.

3. Big Baby – get over yourself. There’s a reason you’re a bench player. I give you credit for playing hard (at home), but you disappeared last night. Tired of your pump up the crowd, drooling, rah-rah bullshit. Learn to make a layup. I expect a similar game tomorrow night.

4. Nate Robinson – dude was on the bench with the Knicks! Again, there’s a reason for that. Another guy that needs to get over himself, put the pom-pom’s down and actually try being productive away from home. Did you see the one alley-oop attempt last night? His pass was actually way too high for Garnett! It was pathetic.

5. Garnett – anyone else tired of his chest pounding, jersey grabbing, retarded “look-at-me” antics? What’s with him kneeling down the other night and pounding the floor maybe 10 times?

I could go on, but you get the point. Besides, I don’t want another championship going to the New England area…land of the cheaters never lose mentality.

"Who is Joe Namath? This is a guy who, if he played in the league today, I'd probably just go hit him late and see what he did, just for the hell of it. Joe Namath can go to hell; he can kiss my ass." - Greg Lloyd, after NBC commentator Joe Namath accused Lloyd of playing dirty.

Amen!

AMEN BROTHER 6!
Just to add;
1) Hate that white golf ball size circle of hair on Rasheed’s head. “Did you get struck by lightning you Psycho!”
2) Would have liked a healthy Bynum against a healthy Perkins but since the Lakers have been hindered through 6 by Bynum’s knee, the injury to Perkins evens things up for Game 7.
3) Big Fat Obese Drooling Baby definitely needs to get over himself. Really enjoy his game as he reminds me of one of my favorites; Charles Barkley, the round mound of rebound. However, the faces to the crowd, the donkey rides, the slobber…Dude, don’t disrespect the Lakers.
4) Same as above except you’re a little pip squeak. Quit playing to the crowd and acting monkeys. You only disrespect the Lakers by doing that. You don’t see Farmar riding around on Mbenga.
5) Garnett I have the utmost respect for. Except for the “on one knee and banging the parquet floor” routine he has been a gamer since he came into the league. I can see Garnett and Allen’s hatred of the Lakers with both being stuck in the Western Conference as their teams lone guns to compete against the Shaq Kobe Lakers Three peat at the beginning of this century. Glad they both got a ring. Hope KB makes sure the limit is one for each.

A Long Time Ago

In 1987 the Lakers had home court advantage. After LA taking a 2-0 lead Boston stormed back winning twice at home including Game 5 in Boston. I could swear that Game 6 was at The Forum and the Lakers won on the strength of a 30-12 3rd quarter run 106-93. I seem to remember seeing Dyan Cannon leaving the Forum and getting in her limo. She hugged me first in celebration! Maybe it was just a dream?

Good luck with your Leprechaun on the rim Swiss. I’ll take Kobe Bryant!

As for tonight, 5020…I’m really not that much a basketball fan. Should Celts lose, I’d simply turn off the TV, go to bed, as opposed to my looking for the highest bridge were it the Steelers in that spot.

Da Doo Ron-Ron

The Lakers came out as flat as it gets. Gasol missing lay-ins underneath the hoop and missing free throws. KB turning the ball over and missing shots. Without Kendrick Perkins the Celtics went with veteran warrior Rasheed Wallace and he had Gasol flustered and outplayed. The Celtics had built a 13 point lead midway through the 3rd quarter. To steal a phrase, it was “nervous time” on Figueroa.

Through the haze and the storm with all of the Lakers temporarily blinded by the utter girth of this game the wackiest Laker was the calm in the storm. As Phil Jackson put it in his post game interview “Ron Artest was the MVP of the game tonight.” Seriously, the Lakers don’t win Game 7 of the NBA Finals without Ron Artest.

But Artest did not do it alone. With the Staples crowd standing and screaming with every possession in the 2nd half the Lakers finally came to life. With the crowd waving their yellow Lakers rally rags and 50 waving his “Terrible Towel” Mr. Clutch Derek Fisher hit a HUGE 3 point shot to tie the game. The Lakers went on a 12-6 run to lead by 6 in the late going. Staples was rocking like I’ve never seen it. Not even Guns N Roses rocked Staples like this on “Use Your Illusion.”

At that point the Lakers were not to be denied. Welcome To The Jungle! Gasol (he of 18 large rebounds) found his game in the post against the exhausted Wallace & Garnett. Bryant (with his tank on “E”) hit all of his FTs and grabbed every rebound on his way to a gargantuan 15. The ones he didn’t get Odom and Artest did along with a clutch 3 point shot each.

Down the stretch, every time Wallace or Allen or Pierce made a shot, Gasol, Artest or Bryant answered. When little used Sasha Vujacic was inserted into the game and given the ball with the game inside a half minute the loud and rowdy crowd became silent. After missing FTs all night the Lakers needed these 2. Sasha gave them to the Lakers. When Odom grabbed the final rebound with seconds remaining he heaved the ball down court. KB24 tracked it down as the last second ticked off and he added MVP to the KB24.

All in all a blood and guts back and forth series culminating in a sloppy yet epic come from behind Game 7 win for the Lakers. KB had finally beaten the Celtics paying them back for 2008 and cementing his legacy. With Championship #16 behind them Kobe stated “Let’s get another!” Without Ron Artest and his gritty and gutty play on this night it would have been the Celtics celebrating on the Staples floor. As much as the Laker Nation loved Trevor Ariza, Ron-Ron brought an intangible that a championship team needs and regularly shut down the opponents best offensive threat night in and night out. As Randy Newman’s “I Love LA” blared over the Staples PA I could only hum one song…Ode to The Crystals…Da doo Ron-Ron-Ron Da doo Ron-Ron…
