Rapid Reports Making it up as we go Edition

Happy belated Fathers' Day to all the dads out there.  We need more fathers nowadays than ever.  You work is truely appreciated and often goes unrecognized but society needs you.  I won't know that joy for a while, at least I don't plan on it.  Another week has gone by and we've seen the LA Lakers get crowned the NBA Champs, US Soccer get screwed by a ref in the world cup but still has a great chance to move to the round of 16, and neither one of those gets me excited in the morning.  The thought of the Steelers winning the Super Bowl does though.  Personally I feel that Ben missing the first four games is way over-blown.  Its how you finish the season that matters anyway right?  We'll win some and we'll lose some but as long as we're in the playoffs and have a shot of getting hot winning 3 straight then that is all I need right now.  I wish these Rapid Reports were full of quotes saying how much Dixon has progressed and how he was looking to be the inside to start QB.  But they're not, I'll settle for hearing how good Keenen Lewis are doing and Johnathon Dwyer.  Two very important positions for this year.  Maybe the Dennis Dixon news will come at training camp, where tomlin does the ol' switcher roo and gives teams less time to prepare for dixon.  Wait, you mean there is only one NFL game tape on Dixon?  Well I was trying to be optimistic, your turn...

Coach Mike Tomlin on top pick Maurkice Pouncey through OTAs. "I think he has proven to be mature beyond his years," Tomlin said. "He's got good football maturity. He's been comfortable at center or guard. It's been a pleasant surprise."

Maurkice Pouncey's maturity is a key factor.  He could be one injury away, God forbid,  from stepping in at center this year.  Its good that he can handle himself accordingly as a professional.  He's come a long way since he was drafted. (Had to throw that in there,  all in good fun though)

Coach Mike Tomlin on trying to coach with an odd quarterback situation. "We're kind of making it up as we go along. There's no blueprint for these situations or circumstances."

Making it up as you go along Mike?  Really, I thought there was a plan.  But maybe thats why there has been some confusion with what has been going on with the amount of reps Dixon has gotten.  I guess you can take this news two ways, either its good that he is being flexible and allowing the performance to dictate who get the reps.  Or a for those who suscribe to the 'failure to plan is planning to fail' notion, this isn't a good thing.  You like your head coach to be in control, to know what he is doing, to provide structure and certainty in a time of uncertainty.  I will take the third option, the ostrich approach and wait to see the results before I decide how I feel about this.  I know its the easy way out but I honestly don't know if it's a good or bad thing yet.

The biggest battle at training camp will be for the starting spot at right guard. Starter Trai Essex will have to hold off top pick Maurkice Pounceyand second-year man Ramon Foster.

Wouldn't it be something if Foster won out the job?  But that would be bad news, good news would be Essex moving back to back-up T and Foster getting the 1st back up position behind Pouncey.  There is a lot of uncertainty when it comes to depth at the offensive line positions.  Hopefully there won't be any injuries this year, we can't afford it.

Don't be surprised if Doug Legursky is the starting center for the Steelers when the season opens. Incumbent Justin Hartwig is coming along slowly after shoulder surgery, and coach Mike Tomlin wants Maurkice Pouncey at right guard.

Wouldn't this be quite a turn of events?  If Hartwig is coming this slow we may have seen the last of him as a Steeler.  At least he got one more year after almost blowing the Super Bowl, even though I still question that call.

All eight of the Steelers draft picks signed three-year deals and all will receive the rookie minimum in base salaries of $320,000 in 2010, $405,000 in 2011, and $490,000 in 2012.

Just in case you wanted to know the dollar amounts on the contracts, I'm not sure if they were reported.

Steelers DE Nick Eason missed the final two weeks of OTAs after appendix surgery, is looking to get back on track for training camp. "When I get medical clearance, I'll be able to start training a couple weeks before camp," said Eason.

Injury update.

CB Keenan Lewis looks like a different player in his second year and will be given every chance to compete for the starting job with Bryant McFadden in training camp.

For those who missed it in the previous RR, Keenan Lewis pushing Bryant McFadden is the best news out of the OTAs.  We'll see if this continues in camp, if it does our secondary will be miles better than it was last year, especially with Troy back.
