Question Concerning Steeler Jersey

The primary reason I am a Steeler fan is because of my great love for Jack Lambert while growing up in Brooklyn, NY.  The Jets and Giants play in New Jersey and as a kid in NYC I had no idea Buffalo was part of NY until I got to high school, which was way too late for me to change allegiance   Lambert represented everything I loved about football:  he was tough, loyal, and someone I could relate as a skinny white kid with bad teeth.   Accordingly, I have always worn a Lambert jersey while watching games and the draft.  After 23 years and after enduring constant abuse for not wearing the jersey of an active player, I have decided to buy an active player's jersey.  To that end, I would love input/suggestions from those of you here at BTSC.  Although only a member for a short time, I have come to respect many of the opinions expressed on this site.  I would like to wear the jersey of a player that thinks and acts like Lambert... i.e., "mess with a Steeler and you get you ass kicked."  The obvious choices are Ward and Harrison, but everyone seems to wear those two and they are well represented.  I thought about Colon, but he is gone for the reason and potentially may not play again as a Steeler.  Popular choices are, obviously, Ben, Mendy,  Polamalu, Miller, and Wallace.  So, avoiding those that are previously named, what do you think?  Who, in your opinion, is tough, loyal, and won't take any crap from anyone in the NFL?  I know whom I'm leaning towards, but I'd love to see what my fellow fans of the B&G think.  Thanks in advance.

Go with good ol’ Charlie Batch.
He is beloved. He is a solid human being. He is a Pittsburgh kid. He loves Pittsburgh and the Steelers. He never plays so he will never do anything wrong and no one will ever boo you walking out of the stadium/sports bar of your choice. You will never get hit in the back of the neck with ripe fruit at a road game. It will soon be a “throw back” jersey you can have to keep with your “58 Lambert” for special occasions…

I started a “Get Blitzburgh to Pittsburgh” fund for Michael B in like 07 and donated $5. I think after 3 years the fund is up to $7.69 and we only have to get Blitz in from the NW not across the big pond.

I'd be up for that. Let's get this kid out to Heinz for a game!

English, I was a lot older than you when I first saw a game in Pittsburgh. The Opening day game vs. the Raiders, the year after they went to the Super Bowl, and the game where Bettis carried the ball 100 times for negative 800 yards and 52 TD’s.

But I’ll tell you what..being in a Stadium for the first time and seeing all that Black and Gold..knowing that you’re in the city that Lambert, Bradshaw, Stallworth, Blount, Woodson, etc etc etc played and bled in and worked so hard to make what the organization is today…I cried. I sat there in my seat with a beer in my hand and cried like a little baby. It was AWESOME.

Let’s get this kid out here…

speaking of jerseys

I recently bought a NFL 75th anniversary throwback Steeler’s Jersey # 63 Dawson. It is awesome…I loved that pattern with the yellow and the black stripes with the Pittsburgh City crest in the middle of the jersey…I always wanted one since I was younger and now Like 20 years later I finally bought one…CLK if I were you I would go with Aaron Smith, or Woodley…I got both of their jerseys respectively!!!

I would say the best player you could go for is Foote

he is the emotional leader of the D, a guy who can hit with the best. Loves the Steelers and Pittsburgh itself and epitomises what it is to be a Stiller.

he left because the FO basically told him that he was surplus to requirements and that they respected him if he were to ask to be released

it was the classiest way to allow him to keep playing while allowing us to move forward.

Woodley

I don’t own a Steelers jersey and my first is going to be Polamalu when I do get around to it, because he’s such a unique player and will be a legend forever.

Woodley is my second choice for a jersey, and I think he fits your criteria just fine. He’s young, nasty, and still on the rise. His contract situation will be resolved and he could take a run at joining the pantheon of legendary Steelers linebackers. The man has already set an NFL record with multiple sacks in four straight postseason games, the first four postseason games of his career no less.

But do you get a home or away jersey? I’ve tried to mull that one over many times.

by barnerburner on Jun 29, 2010 6:31 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Woodley is a good choice if you want an active player

Just wait till his contract gets extended, and you’ll have a few years of it belonging to an active player.

To try and then fail, is not unacceptable. But failing to try, is accepting failure.

by alfresco on Jun 29, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Woodley was my choice.

Now all that needs to go through is his extension, maybe wait until that is done. But I love Woodley’s mentality, he is just a positive dude that absolutely tears up people on the football field.

by CLK47 on Jun 30, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

It is a concern

But he’s a young building block for the franchise that has yet to max out his ability and hit his prime. And he seems to be a character guy that’s reporting to practices and working hard without creating a big stink about it like Revis and Mangold. Guys like that are worth their weight in gold and worth putting all other contract extensions on the back burner until they’re taken care of. I’d be surprised if the front office mucks it up and can’t keep him on the team.

All good choices above....

Aaron Smith would be great, Troy of course, and so would Big Snack. You have to not only get an active player but one who’s been around for a few seasons.

I was going to suggest Woodley myself, but I agree with alfresco – get him signed so you know he’ll be around to continue what he’s started here…

I asked for, and received, a Farrior jersey for father’s day. Great leader, been around the block with the team for a while, captain of the D; great rep off the field as well as on the field. I felt that he has, and continues, to represent the team really well since he got here, and wanted to honor that before his time was up.

by dawgs144 on Jun 29, 2010 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

I wear the farrior jersey too

can’t go wrong with him – he doesn’t have the “don’t mess with me vibe” going though. for my money if that’s what you want, you have to go with #92 – just watch the video of him body-slamming that brownies fan. says it all…

I like the choices above...

And instead of echoing their statements, let me throw out the darkhorse…

The obvious choices are Ward and Harrison, but everyone seems to wear those two and they are well represented. I thought about Colon, but he is gone for the reason and potentially may not play again as a Steeler. Popular choices are, obviously, Ben, Mendy, Polamalu, Miller, and Wallace. So, avoiding those that are previously named…

Okay, strike those choices.

“mess with a Steeler and you get you ass kicked.”

You want that tough, gonna beat the spit out of you if you look at me the wrong way guy? Gotcha. I’ve seen this guy looking awful mean on the sideline. I wouldn’t mess with him.

Who, in your opinion, is tough, loyal, and won’t take any crap from anyone in the NFL?

Someone who is here to stay. Gotcha. Just resigned a multi year deal not too long ago. He’s a Steeler from the begining, and also put in hard work to be where he is now.

everything I loved about football: he was tough, loyal, and someone I could relate as a skinny white kid with bad teeth.

Well, I got the first two, nothing is absolutely perfect.

I own three Steelers jerseys, all of them might work

- Antwaan Randle El, black, bought after the 2004 season. Not your prototypical ‘mean’ type, but the guy is tough… And the way he pops up after being slammed to the ground is just amazing. Now that he is back and ready to retire a Steeler, I like my choice even more. Of course, buying his jersey now might be a different story.

- Woodley, black bought during his second season 2008. Absolutely the guy you are looking for, if, oh if, he signs his contract extension. A lot has been said about him already, so I’ll stop there.

- Mendenhall, throwback, gift to me during last season. You said it was one of your choices, doesn’t fit your description 100% but then I think of the block on the passrusher against the Chargers… Oh boy.

You’re an establishment sheep huh? Keep putting your money into getting a jersey every 3 years. I don’t have a problem with players’ jerseys but think about this.

You ever go to a high school game? The girls wear their favorite players’ jersey number. The only other people that wear players’ numbers or actual jerseys are family members. One day I’ll share some info on what players say about guys wearing their jerseys. You’ll get a good laugh.

By the way I have a Roethlisberger jersey. It’s mainly to irritate Bengal fans. I had a Parker Jersey because 39 is our family number. I took the name plate off the back and I WILL but my name on it. I will never be cut or traded.

Anyhow I ain’t mad atcha. Go on and get a players’ jersey with ya bad self. Like I said I have one too, but I also have my own. Call it a foul if you want, but I’m no sheep.

With The Ahrn Man

I wear black and gold every Sunday (and most other days) but usually “coaches gear.” I don’t usually put another man’s number on my back and Arn knows why.

I do own some game jersey’s with numbers though. I have a “75” Joe Greene Super Bowl X jersey that was bought for me and I rarely wear. It’s too big but I love it anyway…I have a “43” Polamalu that I did buy because when visiting Heinz, EVERYBODY wears a Steelers jersey. I also have a Lakers purple Robert Horry “5” because of the shot heard round the world against Sacramento in 02 and every other clutch shot that Big Shot Bob hit when it counted during his 7 title run. Only wear that to the gym or to a Game 7 against Boston when we desperately need a “W”

Don’t players get a cut of their jerseys sold? So I am sure they might say one thing, but actually feel quite different about it when that cash drops into their hand.

If you want to wear someone’s jersey so be it. I’m pretty sure not every player feels the same about guys wearing their jerseys. As a matter of fact from what I know retired players see it as an honor. So maybe some active ones feel that way too.

it’s weird, everyone who likes rap is pretty much in one camp or the other. obviously you can like both, but people usually like one a LOT more. Pac for me.

Also, I wouldn’t be concerned what a player thought of me as a fan any more than I would be worried that Megan Fox doesn’t find my sasquatch-esque chest hair attractive.

It's a strange thing dank

I like Tupac’s early stuff, but he got darker as time went on. Just not my taste. I didn’t want to be reminded of what I was coming out of. Still I could listen to some of his “newer” stuff. I don’t exactly know where I “parted ways” with him. I guess I’ll have to go back into the memory banks and access that tape. I liked Biggy too by the way. So I guess I only get half cool points because I left the Tupac camp in the later years.

I said up above that I don’t own a Steelers jersey, so clearly I’m not an “establishment sheep” that puts money into a new jersey every 3 years. And I have been to high school games, and upon thinking about it, the Steelers aren’t a high school team so I don’t see how it’s relevant that only girls and families wear players’ numbers and actual jerseys at that level of football.

One day I’ll share some info on what players say about guys wearing their jerseys. You’ll get a good laugh.

One day? Why not now? Is this secret info you’re clinging to like a fine wine that’ll get better with time? If Johnny and CLK down below are wrong in their interpretations of what you said, then go ahead and clear the air on what you actually mean because I don’t know what Tupac has said about his fans. And quite frankly I don’t care what Tupac has said about his fans. I care about what the Steelers say about their fans.

My take on your name/favorite number jerseys are they’re something you give to little kids because they have a “me! me! me!” attitude and don’t yet fully understand the concept of supporting a team, so you try to make them a part of it by making them think they’re something they’re not. I do not play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, so I’m not going to try to pretend that I do by slapping my name and favorite number on a Steelers jersey. If I did that, I’d be taking Ike’s number and that is a jersey foul.

There’s a whole mess of options for clothing you can wear to support a team, but when you want to support and honor a specific player and what they mean to the team and to you, your only real option is to get their jersey. The only jerseys I’ve ever considered owning are Polamalu and Woodley, like I said above, as well as Ward. Are you telling me that one of them, or all three, look down on fans who wear their jerseys? I’m willing to bet that whatever players you’re referencing aren’t worth honoring in the first place and I wouldn’t even be considering getting their jersey anyways.

I’m sorry you have such a complex.

There's an email in my profile now

This is a public forum for discussion, so why throw something out on one if you’re not willing to discuss it? If you’re willing to broach a topic somewhere, why don’t you back it up and explain yourself in the same place? If I start to run my mouth, I see it through to the end. If I don’t want to get into something, I don’t bring it up. If you want to talk sense, then talk sense. Don’t dance around singing “I know something you don’t know” like you’re superior because of it.

Such unsavory topics have been discussed on this forum in varying depth and detail like rape (Big Ben) and incest (that tackle that went undrafted out of wherever it was). Yet only Hi5 has managed to get himself banned for what he spewed about the latter. Do send that message, I’m interested in what you’re apparently only willing to email because it seems to me one can find a way to discuss just about anything here if you’re not attacking or insulting anyone or in any way getting personal.

So is it something personal? I’m surprised that two innocuous words – jersey foul – set you off like that if it’s not.

whats the deal with you burner...

as a whole I think I can speak for the fact that most and I say most 99.9% of the people who frequent BTSC have a “Civil” understanding amongst each other. Sure were brash, and goofy at times, but our purpose isn’t to attack or insult anybody. Our purpose is to talk about the local subjects surrounding our “TEAM” and whatever else that we deem necessary to talk about (i.e. including morale boosts and jokes!!!). So personally if you don’t like a few “Old timers” (no offense guys) around here for the “Sailor” verbage that they use then tough titty…we all like to have fun and that is what it is all about. Nothing more, nothing less…there are guys on this blog that have a sense of humor and actual raw nerve to post what they feel (in accordance to the rules of BTSC). Some things here might offend, but we try not to do that…I have been asked numerous times to “water” down my language, and guess what I have. I am not trying to pick a fight or argue with you man. I am just posting what I feel. I have only been on this site for about a month and a half, and I always wonder “Why the hell haven’t I been poasting on here years ago.” This is a great blog section, with great minds, that “normally” think alike (shout out to you Johnny S. lol…j/k). It is what it is…I fit in here obviously you don’t by the sounds of it…if you don’t have a sense of humor, what else is there to get you through a boring ass work day where the hours seem to go on end…we are all ADULTS here…I have respect for everybody on this blog and this website as a whole. If somebody wants to poke fun or joke around, I will be the first one in the mix to joke around…(most of you guys know this as fact lol!). I’ll just leave you with this, at the end of the day you go home or whatever, do whatever, and thats that, you wake up everyday with air filling your lungs, everyday is a great day for me, no matter what goes on, I know I am alive for another day. thats what matters, not that “oh well I’m not gonna answer your e-mail b/c it’s rated R…” b/s man…some people have to send e-mails to explain a situation b/c of the circumstances involved with getting kicked off this site…and that is that!!!

some food for thought

I thought that discussion sounded familiar, so I looked up what our very own bussy #36 had to say about it in his autobiography ‘The Bus: My life In and Out of a Helmet’:

“Here I was at Reliant Stadium in Houston, and there were thousands of Steelers fans, some of them wearing my No. 36 jersey. I don’t know how else to say it, I was just so proud.”

“I’ve seen people all around the country wearing my jersey. To me – and I take this stuff seriously – it’s the fans’ ultimate compliment to a player. After all, they can go into a store and choose from ten or twenty jersey numbers. But if they paid their hard-earned money to buy my jersey, there had to be a reason.
Maybe it means they liked the way I played or represented myself. I’ve always been very appreciative that they wanted my name and number on their backs. And I’ve always remembered that I have to do my part to keep them wearing my jersey number. Those jerseys represent a belief in me and what I stand for.

I enjoyed those paragraphs, they pretty much outline exactly my line of thinking. Of course, everybody needs to judge for themselves whether it is homoerotic or something to wear anyone else’s jersey.

Fantastic stuff from JB. Every player should live in a way that exemplifies what Bettis was getting across.

great advice

you should read J.B.s autobiography. My gf got it for me when I told her that in 05 that I was sad I never got to see Bettis in his prime (didn’t become a football fan until ’04 when I first came to the US). I have read it so many times by now, it is just inspiring. The guy is a freaking genius, every football player should think along the same lines he does.

by Simonsen on Jul 1, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm thankful I was able to see him live in person....

Guy was all class.

I remember watching him bust through (the Jaguars?) in a playoff game. Awesome. He was just a bowling ball rolling downhill, and he’d get up and start shaking his head, you knew the next run was going to be balls out.

If you watch the DVD set from the 2005 Super Bowl run…both DVD’s are good, but the one where it’s not the full game…they run through each game of the season. And to see the team at 7-5 and on the brink of elimination…and then to turn it around…in the process, they smashed the bears, and the scene where it shows Soldier Field from a turf angle, snow coming down, players lining up from both sides…and there was Bettis, with his natural mud tires on, just grinding, and the hit he put on Uhrrrrrrlacher that bent his back and drove him backwards….I get freakin’ CHILLS every time I see that. Every single time.

I miss JB on gamedays.

To tell you the truth

Due to free agency and the great potential for player movement, I will never own the jersey of an active player. Not Ward, not Ben, not Heath, not Troy. If they ever left for another team, to me, the jersey would be worthless, dead to me. Should they retire a Steeler then I might consider purchasing the jersey (Bettis for example). For now, no amount of ribbing or abuse from anyone will ever get me to trade in my #75 gameday jersey.

Thank you for all the comments

NYSteelersFan4 got the guy that I’ve been leaning towards, Kemo. He’s my tentative choice because he is tough, blocks like an animal (we all remember what he did to the Chargers D), loyal (he took less money to stay with us than go to the Jets for more $), and I think he will be a Steeler for the rest of his career. That said, I am still going to wait a while longer before making the plunge.

PixburgArn: I’m curious about what you meant when you said:

“One day I’ll share some info on what players say about guys wearing their jerseys.
      You’ll get a good laugh.”

What does that mean? It may be the case that some of these guys think wearing another man’s makes the guy his a bitch. That is part of the reason I’m hesitant to buy a new jersey. I’ve not had the privilege of meeting Jack Lambert, but I like to think that he is honored by the idea of fans still wearing his jersey. I hope some of the players in the NFL still feel that way. I realize many of these guys are not that bright and nothing more than punks, but I think a few still have honor. Ward comes to mind in light of his giving a game ball to fans wearing his jersey after he scores.

In any event, thanks again for all the great comments.

Ha!

I looked at the exchange and I guess it could seem that way. That’s just how I treat the kids that I mentor from youth detention. If they start acting out, I just get frank. Not Frank the crusher, but you know…

I wasn’t upset or anything, but I can see how it may be taken that way.

You know what’s funny. I see some when they get inprocessed and they are crying and stuff. Then I see them two weeks later and they are “cool” again. I don’t call them out unless they front on me, but usually we’ve connected by then and they know I’m not a stuffed shirt that just wants to control them.

I'm kind of in the same boat

I have a replica Hines Ward jersey that I got for cheap from some pillhead that shoplifted tons of stuff and sold it to people. But now that I have a fairly OK job, I can actually afford to get an authentic to wear on game day. But this thread has given me some food for thought as to which one. Kemoatu is a good pick, but I’d probably go for Woodley or Wallace.

Another option is the throwback Woodson jersey, which is a very real possibility. It would be awesome if I could get a deal on a Blount jersey that was misprinted to spell “Blunt.”

by dankdiggety on Jun 30, 2010 7:59 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously loved this thread....

I went through the same thing.

My first jersey was #12, Bradshaw.

My 2nd was #58….For all the reasons you stated, and just because there wasn’t a tougher, more passionate “Steelers First” player I knew of. I love Lambert. I may actually name my first child after him. If it’s a girl, he’ll be “Jack.” If it’s a girl, she’ll be named, “Lambert.” I will just hope she always has her front teeth…

My 3rd Jersey was a tough one…seeing as how #12 was outgrown by the time I was about 12, Lambert’s and the next one would be my two “grown up” jerseys, and I’m not going ot have a collection of 1,000 jerseys.

I went with #43. Tough. Wild. Fearless. A true warrior. A total Steeler, and I just cannot see him playing anywhere else. Nowhere. Ever. His style…his competitive drive…and one thing, that he shares with Lambert: a gentleman. He’s a genuinely good person off the field, and I respect and admire that. I know a lot of people own his jersey, but in a way, I think there’s a reason for it. It;s different than every single female Steeler fan with her derivation of Hine’s jersey…home, away, pink, etc….it’s almost a given: female Steeler fan, Hines jersey. :)

But I digress…#43 is my other option outside of Jack Lambert….

I'd say

Mike Wallace- tough as nails N’awlins kid.
Timmons – he’s going to go down as a Steeler great. He’s just 24; haters don’t want to realize he’s just a kid but already really experienced.

Z. Hood – kid embodies lots of the old school Steelers traits- hard working, selfless, etc.

Hines is the normal attitude for the Steelers. You know I don’t even own a jersey, that I wear. I have a red shirt that says “rock on” and I wore it during the during the game and that’s it…. Maybe I should get a jersey too. I have Steelers tattoos, that’s kinda my jersey.

I actually have 3

I have a Plexigo, Ben, and Hines Ward…..I always wear my Hines Jersey. It is my favorite. I believe he stands for what I believe a Steeler should be. They all 3 are black. I want a white Hines jersey, so that is next on my list. My daughter has a white & black Bettis jerseys. the white is his last jersey…..the Super Bowl in Detroit. Good old #36. She will NOT wear any other jersey. Says it brings the team luck. She is crazy about Jerome Bettis. I would buy Ward, Harrison, or Polamalu. All 3 of these guys BLEED black & gold. I live in Ohio, and I were ALL my Steeler gear all year long. Sure I get dirty looks from the Browns & Bengal’s fans…..some of them in my family…lol, but I just bend over and show them my tatoo on my lower back. The STEELER’s emblem. Their mouths just gape open…..it is beautiful! It hurt like hell…bone to bone…..and took awhile, but it looks great. All the colors. I do need to get my white touched up. here I am, running at the mouth……

I was really talking about the “skinny” and “bad teeth” that Jack was known for.

I’ve narrowed it down to either Woodley or Kemo. After reading that awesome article concerning Woodley, he is the front runner, but I want to see if he resigns.

I have a Ben jersey that was purchased for me as a gift in his 2nd season. I still wear it.
The jersey I picked for myself was James Harrison. I love Deebo, he’s a beast. I did not pick the jersey because Deebo is popular, but because his jersey is the one I wanted. Both my jerseys are black.

My daughter has a Polamalu jersey (he’s her favorite player), but her first jersey was Randle El. She selected the player she wanted and he’s who she picked. When he went to the Redskins she hated him and refused to ever wear his jersey again. I’ll be curious to see if she ever pulls it out of her closet.

She always wears her 43, though. She has 2 Polamalu jerseys, the home and away.

I love being the most-hated guy here. I love beating them while [their fans] are flicking me off. --Hines Ward
