Going For The Championship!

OK. I know this is a Steelers site, but I am soooo fired up for tonight. In the NFL there is great rivalries for our team.  It's Steelers vs. Raiders. Steelers vs. Cowboys. Steelers vs. BrownRavens. For a transplanted Pittsburgh boy living in the City of Angels since 86 the NBA rivalry is Lakers vs. Celtics.

Star-divide

So this post is dedicated to anyone here who happens to be a fan of the NBA, the Lakers or Celtics or just Championship sports. I will be at Game 2 and 7 (if necessary) with my Purple & Gold. What are your thoughts on the series? 50's;

* Celtics are scary good. They are a big veteran championship team with big game players like KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. While Lakers have home court advantage I am worried about the Celtic's size, depth and point guard.

* Even if the Lakers bigs can play even with the Celt front line, even if KB24 plays at a MVP level while being triple teamed, even if the Lakers bench can equal the Celts bench who can watch Rajon Rondo? Not Mr. Clutch, Derek Fisher. And definitely not for 48 minutes a night. He is much too old. The Lakers should save Fisher for when they need to make a shot late in the 4th quarter. Just give him .4 seconds and the Lakers will be all right

* I think it comes down to the otherworldly Kobe Bean Bryant. He will need to take Rondo and make him a non factor. At the same time KB will need to play like he did against the Suns. Going for 30 a night against this defense will be nearly impossible. Shutting down the budding superstar Rondo will be nearly impossible. If anyone can do it it is Bryant. This is his big chance to right the wrong of 2008 and lift his legacy into the Jordanspere.

* 50 says; KB24MVP. "Lakers in 7"

GO LAKERS!

Lakers in 6, there’s no way the NBA is going to allow this to end sooner than that. There’s way too much commercial money involved per game to have a short series. Just like the Lakers vs. Suns series, the Lakers will win games 1 & 2, and then a ton of extra fouls will be called against the Lakers during the games in Boston (just like games 3 & 4 in Phoenix), which will allow the Celtics to win 2 of the 3 games there. Lakers then return home in game 6 to close it out. Bank n it.

IMHO

I think the Suns provided a tougher matchup than the C’s will. Nash is a MUCH better point guard than Rondo. Stoudemire (once a fire was lit under him) was more of a force than KG will be. At times Amare seemed possessed. Also, the Suns have several guys that can live outside the perimeter which is a tough matchup for the Lakers. C’s only have 2 real 3-point threats – Pierce and Allen.

This series will live in the paint a lot more than the previous and that bodes well for the Lakers. Lakers in 5.

you may be right

I think Rondo is a better PG than Nash right now, but Rondo’s achilles is his shooting—particularly from the free throw line where he is a major liability. He can explode scoring-wise but he’s no go-to guy when the offense stalls.

Here’s what jumped out at me last night. When the Celtics offense is stuck in a half-court set and they can’t seem to put points up, they can get lost easily. They don’t have an automatic “give this guy the ball player.” Some nights it’s Allen, some nights it’s Pierce, but it won’t be Rondo because if he’s hot then the whole offense will be and the game won’t look like it did last night. If you take the wind out of the celtics’s sails, they can’t kickstart themselves again.

You have to remember—Artest is a defensive bully like he used to be now. So you can’t expect Pierce to have the series he did against Orlando. And while it will cost Kobe’s legs to defend Allen, he is perfectly capable of it. With those two, LA can serverely hamper Bostons’ perimiter shooting, which makes it much harder for Rondo to create off-the-dribble.

The only way Boston wins is with stalwart defense and transition scoring. You saw last night how LA controlled the paint and kept Boston in half-court sets. Boston couldn’t get offensive boards at all (they had like 2 all game, seriously). Boston’s shooters were held in check (Pierce by Artest and Allen by foul trouble). Boston has to ramp-up the pace in game 2 to stand a chance against the LA juggernaut at home.

My heart says Celtics in 6. My brain says Lakers in 6. Most likely to me is that Boston steals one in game 2, but LA steals one in Boston, and then wins 5 at home and 6 in Boston (as KG’s legs wear down over the course of the series).

Rondo is hurt

so he will be slowed down. That will be a big advantage for the steelers. Lakers. lol I think that will allow Fisher to play him and keep up with him, with him.

I don’t think Bynum needs to do much, just be a presence, give some fouls and have a couple of 12 pts 6 rebs games. Give gasol some breathing room and hopefully he’ll have more of a impact in this series than the last one. That is what worries me about the Lakers, when gasol is getting 25 pts a game its tough to be them. KG can neutralized gasol so lets see if the spanish guy can levanta su partida… “pick up his game”.

Artest will need to be on Allen. I’d let Kobe guard Pierce. Pierce is much slower than allen and they won’t be running him across 10 screens around the court to get him open. You don’t want your best offensive threat tired in the 4th quarter from doing too much chasing. I think that is the best defensive matchup for the Lakers if they are going to win, we’ll see what Phil got planned but thats how I would do it.

The bench is important also, the lakers bench played like dogs in the finals. Lakers will be deeper this year with Odom going tot he bench where he usually plays better. Last time these two teams played in 2008, the Celtics got tremendous help from their bench. Posey went for 21 points in game 2, they had 35 points from their bench on the road (which is rare) in game 4, both wins for the Celtics. The lakers bench are playing much well this year, shannon brown, Lamar Odom, Jordan Farmar, and even Sasha Vujachic (sans his technicial foul against the suns) create a good bench for the lakers. They have a good chance of matching the celtics bench this year especially since Rasheed Wallace is also hurt for the celtics.

Personally I want the lakers to win even though I mainly pull for the Spurs. It will depend on how they defend home court though, if they can go to boston up 2-0, this series will be over. If it is a split 1-1, I think Boston can win it. Game 1 & 2 are the most important in this series with the way the Finals are set up, the 2-3-2 format. I think Kobe is going to go off this finals. He’s been playing his best basketball of the year these playoffs and judging by his actions and attitude he is more focused than ever to take it to an even higher level in the finals. He was hitting dagger after dagger against the sun and they were playing tough defense on him. He won’t get tougher shots than those and if he puts them down we can see some 40 point performances from the black mamba. The biggest difference between Lebron and Kobe right now is the jumpshot. If the celtics let Kobe get the looks Lebron had then Kobe may score more. Pierce will be looking to slow down Kobe most likely since Allen isn’t known for his defense. There is no one on the bench that has proven they can hold Kobe so I expect a big series from him. We’ll see how much help he gets.

My heart says lakers in 6
But defense wins Championships, Celtics in 5. (This pick will change if the lakers come out tough and physical and win games 1 and 2)

Artest

The Lakers signed Artest because of what Pierce did to KB and everyone that tried to guard him in 2008. Artest will take Pierce. KB will have to take Rondo a lot. D Fish will watch Rondo but should be able to hang with Allen who lives off the screen and J. Fish is ok against the pick and roll.

Totally agree that Bynum won’t have to do much but 12 and 6 is a lot especially if his knee doesn’t hold up.

and KG was looking like CRAP. Boston is going to need a virtuoso-evisceraton performance from Rondo and the supporting cast of scorers if it wants game 2. And if Boston wants the title, I really think Boston needs game 2.

I'm a huge fan of competition at its highest level

So yes, I’ll definitely be into the series, especially since it’s such a great rivalry. I love watching just about any sport where the stakes are highest. I have virtually no interest in soccer but I’ll watch a good amount of World Cup this summer. I love the Olympics. Golf on TV is like watching grass grow but I’m into the Masters. The Stanley Cup finals have been excellent.

For me, it’s so fascinating to watch these amazing athletes perform under pressure for the ultimate prize in their sport. I love their passion and how willing they are to push themselves beyond their own capabilities. And the fans! How great was it listening to the Black Hawks fans cheer through the National Anthem? Or how cool will it be to watch soccer fans singing and dancing during World Cup matches? That’s the essence of sport for me, so I take every opportunity I can find to watch it at its highest levels.

I’m not interested at all. I hate both teams, especially the Celtics, and I’m sick of watching them. I’m a very casual fan, but I would have much rather seen the Cavs or Magic in the finals and someone other than the Lakers. I guess I’m hoping the Lakers win just so the most obnoxious (or at least top 2) city in sports doesn’t get another title.

I don’t think Arenas is going anywhere. He can still play and average 18-20 a game. I think it would be stupid to get rid of Arenas, who could benefit so much from a player like Wall. If we can sign one of the big name free agents (possibly Lebron) then this team goes from shit to a big time contender.

Irony

to go from losing to LeBron every year int he playoffs to not making the playoffs to getting Lebron and going back to the playoffs, if that was the plan then you should draft a big man, no need for another PG. I just don’t think there is enough basketballs in the sport for Wall and Arenas to be on the same team.

I just don’t think there is enough basketballs in the sport for Wall and Arenas to be on the same team.

I hate hearing this stuff. This is probably the most overused comment in sports, especially basketball. Just because these guys are big time scorers does not mean they do not want to be a team player. Arenas has already stated that he wants to stay with the Wizards and he would love to play with Wall. Arenas was never a true PG and Wall is. Wall is not going to be a scorer, he is going to be a distributor. And he is going to distribute it to Arenas and whoever else wants it.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jun 3, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

No Malor No

1. Arenas is a true scoring PG. But I don’t believe he do well at the SG position.
2. You contradicted yourself. You said these guys are big time scorers then go on to say that Wall is not going to be a scorer, which one is it.
3. I said what I said because both players need the ball in their hands to be effective, or they need to dominate the ball. Its exactly why I don’t believe D. Wade and L. James can co-exist on a team playing in the NBA. Its nice to fantasize about but I don’t think it realistically works. Arenas is a PG for a reason, that allows him to be most effective at scoring the basketball, he isn’t much of a distributor/facilitator. But needs the ball in his hands consistently to be who he is. Wall is a PG for a reason, that allows him to be the most effective at facilitating the offense and distributing the basketball. He needs the ball in his hands consistently to do that. That is why I don’t think its a good mesh. Pair Wall up with a good big man, a slasher at SF and a spot shooter at SG. Not a slasher/scorer at PG. But what what do I know. It just makes sense to me though.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Jun 3, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

1. Arenas might be a true scoring PG, but that is not the role of the PG in the NBA anymore. Do the points come with the great talent of some of the PG in this league? Of course. However, PG is supposed to be a pass first position and Arenas was too much of a scorer to be able to run our offense. I think he will do just fine at SG. It is called a shooting guard, and Arenas is one of the best shooters in the league.

2. When I said “these guys” I was not referring to Wall. I was referring to the Wades, Lebrons, Kobes, etc. These guys want to have the ball in their hands but I guarantee that none of them would have problems with other people scoring and them winning. Another ESPN brainwashing in the works I see….

3. Almost every 1 and 2 guard in the NBA needs to the ball to be effective. They cannot post up down low and have a huge impact without scoring like PF and Centers can do. So all PG and SG need the ball to be effective. Wall does need the ball in his hands, he is a premier PG and a guy with his talent should have the ball in his hands. The Wizards and Arenas have accepted that. But you are making it seem like he is never going to give it up. He is definitely going to dish it off to Arenas to score, that is what the PG is going to do. Many people think that Arenas is not the player he was in 2006-2007 anymore, and they are most likely right because of his injuries and legal troubles. I do not think GIlbert is a 30+ guy every game like he once was, but I think he could benefit very well from a PG like Wall who is going to take so much of the pressure off of Gil.

And I think you have a very valid point with what you are trying to say. You do seem to know a good bit. You may actually be right, but I can almost guarantee it that Arenas and Wall will be playing next to each other in 2010-2011. So until then, we are really both wrong. Guess it is just my Wizards homerness coming out. It is tough rooting for a team that has been such a disgrace over the last 10 years.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jun 3, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

OOHHH lol

1. I don’t think Arenas is one of the best shooters in the league. For one, two the reason why I don’t think he’l be as effective at the SG position in the NBA is height. Arenas is 6’4, at least that is what he is listed at, same height as wall. There are too many SG that are 6’6 and 6’7 in the NBA and he won’t have the height advantage like he does on many PGs. That changes how you drive to the basket and being a SG often means you score differently from a PG. He may work out, I just don’t think so.

2. Sorry can’t read ya mind. In a conversation concerning Wall and Arenas and the Washington Wizards you bring up Lebron, Kobe, and Wade as these guys? Then have the nerve to say something about some ESPN brainwashing? Malor are you serious? I can only go off of what you say, if you are vague and are not coherent don’t expect me to do it for you. Re-read what you wrote and tell me how I was suppose know ‘these guys’ was suppost to include Lebron, Kobe, and Wade and exclude Wall. My point has nothing to do with them not wanting other people to score, it has to do with them needing the ball the effective.

3. When I say needs the ball to be effective I should explain what I mean. Ray Allen doesn’t need the ball to be effective, Rajon Rondo does. Lebron and Wade need the ball to be effective, Derek Fisher doesn’t, Kobe is kinda mixed, he can do either or. Does it make sense now? I think the best example is the Celtics team. You see Ray Allen go through screen after screen, catch and shoot and make. He doesn’t need the ball to be effective. He is a good enough jump shooter where you can run him off screens half the game and he can still get 20 pts. He doesn’t need to dominate the ball to play his game and create a shot. Rondo on the other hand can’t shoot to save his life, he’s gotten better but still isn’t enough of a threat where you are running him off screens, he needs to have the ball and use his ability to drive to score the majority of the time. You need guys ‘who don’t need the ball’ to space the floor, get those points when teams are packing the lane, and to take the pressure off your ‘slashers’ or guys who need the ball. Rondo is a great passer and Arenas isn’t. He is more of a Baron Davis type PG. There are few guys that can play multiple positions and be successful. There is a reason why Kobe plays SG and not SF, why Tim Duncan plays PF and not C and the same for KG. Lebron is a rare talent that can play 2-4, even though he tries to play PG I don’t think he is really good at it. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good passer just not a good facilitator of offense, which may have something to do with the coach but we’ll find out soon if that was the issue.

I guess we are both wrong. But then again the Wizards are the same team that selected Kwame Brown #1 overall a couple of years ago, they might do something funny with that type of Rep. Don’t feel bad though because no one knows what their doing in the NBA when it comes to drafting. Its more comical than the NFL when you actually look back.

thanks

Kobe didn’t play like it this year. Lebron had the better season even though I believe Kobe is the better all around player. It looks like Kobe left some in the tank for the playoffs and why not, at this point in his career that is what he is going to be remember for anyways.

I always tell people this, Jordan isn’t great just because he was a great basketball player. Jordan is so revered because he won 6 championships with no dominate big man in a league where its thought that you need a dominate big man to win championships. And if he hadn’t retired in the middle of it they most likely would have won 8 rings. There are plenty of elite players to play the game. Jordan wouldn’t be who he was if it wasn’t for his post-season play and rings. It will be the same for Kobe if he not only wins this year’s title but next year’s also.

BUT

Jordan had Pippen man. I know that the big man thing is said to be the most important factor and Shaq is definitely a reason for Kobe’s first 3 rings. However, Pippen was the best wingman in the NBA for many years. He was almost as unguardable as Jordan was. MJ and Pippen is like Kobe with Durant (with better defensive skills) in today’s game.

I take nothing away from Pippen. But the thought process was that you needed a C. I jordan needed pippen just as much as pippen needed jordan. Jordan could just score in the clutch where Pippen couldn’t do that. Fact is there hasn’t been a team to win a championship that didn’t have at least 2 players playing at a elite level. Bron can be fine in NY, but he needs someone else to sign there. And someone else will.

I’m a Knicks fan, so I’m actually hoping for Wade over Bron. I think Wade has the ruthless Jordan/Bird spirit that Bron lacks. Bron is a flow-of-the-game type of player who doesn’t seem to nut-up when most needed. I don’t think he can shoulder a whole team on his back like Wade can, regardless of the physical skills he brings to the table.

My dream scenario is Wade/Stoutemire as NYKs but my brain is saying it might be more like Johnson and Bosh (boooooooooooo Joe Johnson).

You should read Simmons’ article on Bron’s choices. he calls NYK the “Sonny Corleone Move”, the Bulls the “Michael Corleone Move” and the Cavs the “Connie Corleone Move” (for loyalty). Simmons’ take on Bron is right on. I just hope he’s right and he goes to CHI—where he’ll be best used—and I hope Wade goes to NYK

Kobe is 3 rings away from 7, MaLoR, so hold your horses. I agree about LeBron—Jordan, Bird, Magic, Kobe, etc… those players would have never left the Boston series with bullets left in their gun. But you get the impression that LeBron didn’t unload like you expect your future HOFer to do.

Yea I get what you are saying. Jordan is the greatest because he was the first of his kind. No one dominated like that before Jordan. There were other great players, but Jordan was on another level.

I only say the Kobe stuff because of the fact that he is the closest thing to Jordan we will ever see. Is he better than Jordan? No. But man he is damn close.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

yeah

Cowherd said it best. “If Michael Jordan never existed, we would be watching Kobe Bryant in awe.” He’s right. But still, Jordan was the most terrifying player to coach against. There was simply nothing you can do.

You can’t say the same for Kobe. The Celts beat him in 2008 by staying in front of him and turning him into a jump-shooter. Kobe laid a complete stink bomb—“CHECK THE POSTSEASON STATS” to quote Dr Del. Jordan NEVER had a postseason series like that and I tend to think he would have hung himself if he ever did. Jordan was too ruthless. Too cold. Kobe doesn’t have the same blood type, even if he is a top-5 player of all time.

In Kobe's Defense

He had no help in 08 as Pau shrunk, Bynum was out hurt and Ariza was no Artest plus had missed 99% of the season with a broken foot.

KB is the best player in the NBA and probably the best since MJ. Comparing him to MJ is not fair. It’s like comparing Pujols to Babe Ruth for Christ sake. MJ single handedly took over a professional sport like no one I ever saw. Probably Ruthian. No one had a chance at the title while Jordan played. Everyone else was going for second place. This is no knock on Kobe. Just a fact about MJ and the period he played in…

Again, my Wizards love is speaking here. I have to be optimistic that Arenas is going to be a good SG for us, because he is going to be playing there.

I just meant these guys as the superstars on their teams. And Wall and Arenas are going to be the two biggest names on our team. Not comparing them to either of those 3 guys, just saying that teams can when the star player does not have the ball all the time.

You say Arenas is not a great passer. This is why we are bringing in Wall and switching Gil to #2. Yes he is slightly undersized for the 2 spot, but Arenas is too good of a player to keep off the court.

That Kwame Brown stuff is old news. Wall is a can’t miss player and we WILL pick him. I agree about the draft, it is nearly impossible to gauge these guys.

We all love our teams and want them to do great things. Nothing wrong with that.

I just didn’t know who you meant by ‘these guys’ its all good.

I hope it does work out actually. I enjoy seeing good players, I like Arenas and actually thing people overreacted to his gun mishap. You don’t bring guns to the work place but the guy isn’t a thug by any stretch of the imagination. They will still need to bring in someone to stretch the floor. Because

Turk was a time bomb waiting to go off, he’s in it for the money and would have had a drop in play this year because last year was a contract year. If you saw him play in Toronto this year you could tell he just didn’t care. Especially after faking being sick and missing a game then going to the club. The magic needed to find someone else or sign Hedo to a 1 year contract so he’d do it all again, but that wasn’t going to happen. It sad for them the ‘superstar’ they got never has showed up in big games. Carter never was the player people thought he was, he was a good dunker and had a decent jump shot but he isn’t the ’I’m going to take over the game and win championships’ type player. If I’m the Magic I’m dumping him because they won win a championship with Carter.

Good news and Bad News

Good news for the lakers – they came out, played hard and didn’t get pushed around. Odom didn’t do much of anything and hopefully that will change because they will need him. If you remember from the last series in 2008, Celtics made the lakers a jump shooting team and dominated the free throws and fouls. I think game 2 Boton shot 32 free throws to LA’s 10. The lakers are not themselves when they shoot too many 3’s and jumpers, they were able to score in the paint, if he keep the free throw battle even thats a good sign.

Bad news for the lakers – the celtics will come out with more energy next time. Like I said game 2 is the game they need to win. You don’t want to go back to boston down 0-2 with no shot of winning the series on your home floor, when few teams have won all three games at home.

Good news for the celtics – Ray Allen got in foul trouble early, that shouldn’t happen again in game 2. KG played like trash with no presence on the inside all jumpers. And rondo didn’t have the effect we thought he’d have. They expect those things to change in game 2.

Bad news for the celtics – the Lakers are not going to be pushed around, they aren’t going to get any shorter and no one is going to contain Kobe this time. They need to hope that Odom still doesn’t have an impact, Bynum becomes less effective as the series goes on and Artest forgets how to shoots again. Also as Espn won’t let you forget that Phil jackson is undefeated in the series after winning game 1.

Good News Bad News
  • Impressed at the Lakers play last night. They ran away from Boston and were up by 20 when they took the foot off the gas. You’re 100% correct about the Lakers, taking it the hole and shooting J’s. When PHX went zone the Lakers went 3 happy and lost 2 games. Yesterday the Lakers slashed to the hoop and got the basket or the second chance points or the foul. Lakers gotta keep playing that way to beat Boston.
  • Celts will come out tougher in Game 2 (I’m there in section 106!) and the Lakers will need to be ready. See the Lakers winning their home games and the Celts winning theirs. That brings you to Game 7.
  • Allen will not get in that kind of foul trouble in Boston. They will let the teams bang on the east coast. What is up with KG? Is he old? Pau outplayed him last night. Surprise Surprise Surprise…to 50.
  • Lakers ARE NOT going to be pushed around like 08. Pau took it personal. Bynum has avoided surgery to be here. KB is KB. Artest is a psycho. Look for Odom to make an impact later in the series. He comes and goes. That’s why he is not a superstar but so damn intriguing.
  • Props to my work out buddy Jeffrey Osbourne on a rousing rendition of the National Anthem last night. The Lakers are something like 300-3 when Jeffrey sings at the game. Should take him to Beantown! Here’s Jeff in 08. On The Wings Of Love…

NBA is a joke

Every sports league at any level struggles with officiating. Refs are human and mistakes are made and sometimes the wrong team wins. Not so in the NBA. In the NBA the right team always wins, at least when it comes playoff time. During the regular season the officiating is so horrible some games are almost unwatchable

Lakers got all the calls except the ones they needed

It seems like the refs were out for Kobe tonight, he got at least 2 phantom calls on him, the offensive foul or should I say ray allen flop was terrible. I thought the superstars were suppose to get the calls? Kobe picked up his 5th foul with like 11 mins to go in the fourth, you can’t say that didn’t alter the course of the game. But the lakers deserved to lose, they didn’t stick on their defensive assignments for Ray Allen at all tonight, you expect him to make some 3s but 8-12 from 3pt range? And some of those shots were wide open, Shannon Brown’s defense on him was embarrassing. Going to help a guy who is double teamed on the post and losing sight of ray allen is inexcusable. Odom needs to step up and play like his talent dictates, but this is what he does on the regular, play big one game or series and disappear the next. Rondo played excellent too for the Celtics.

FISHER KING

Derek Fisher is the consummate professional, a true team player and as big game clutch of a player as the NBA has ever known. Destined for retirement 3 years ago Fisher continues to amaze with an array of big shots at crucial times keying the Lakers to another post season victory. His 11 4th quarter points after the Lakers triangle stalled was the key to victory tonight.

Grabbed by the network as the final buzzer sounded Fisher was filled with emotion giving the post game interview with KB at his side. Fisher welled up and simply stated how much he loved the game, his teammates and playing with Bryant. Whatever happens in the remainder of this series, Fisher is a true Champion.

Thought Garnet came up big as did Big Baby. Thought Rondo came back to earth as KB stayed out of foul trouble and was able to defend. Ray Allen disappeared. Allen won’t miss 13 shots again and Pierce won’t be saddled with foul trouble so the Lakers better be ready to defend on Thursday.

On the Purple end, KB24 carried the Lakers in the first half and the Celts made him work for every one of his 29. Odom finally made an appearance and along with Gasol and Bynum played the Celt line even. None was stellar but all 3 contributed. Artest is a liability on offense but has taken Pierce out of this series so far with his D. Pierce was the MVP in 08 and Artest’s tough defensive contributions should not be downplayed. Kudos to Luke Walton who spelled Artest with some good D on Pierce and Sasha for 2 clutch FTs in the waning seconds. Game 2 was disappointing but Game 3 was uplifting. One Rec & the post goes up top! 2 W’s and the Lakers bring a Parade to LA!

When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen

by 5020 on Jun 9, 2010 12:59 AM EDT reply actions

I think Artest

got Pierce under wraps. Kobe played like trash in the 4th quarter. I’m not a hall of fame coach but I still believe the best case scenario is to put Kobe on Pierce so he doesn’t have to do all that running around. They said Kobe looked tired, if that is the case let artest stay with Pierce.

Fisher does what he always does, why are we surprised? He makes big shots in big games. That is what make this laker team so dangerous. Everyone overlooks fisher but he is just as capable as hitting the big shot as anyone on the floor. I agree fisher is a true champion. That is why Phil kept the guy around.

Garnet finally manned up like we thought he would in game 2. He started using the basket as a shield for the blocks by going under and around it to lay it in instead of going straight up. Expect the lakers to see this in film and instead of attacking him straight up expecting his move and Kevin will be less effective in game 4. The big key is Allen. He spaces the floor for them. I think Rondo will work on his 3 pointer, he has to. Once he is able to hit 3’s consistently and you can’t sag off on him that will open things up more for pierce and kevin. But since thats not the case, allen is their only hope for spacing. He won’t miss 13 again but then again I don’t expect Kobe to go 1-4 in the 4th quarter again in game 4.

Odom played better but I still expect more from him. He got lucky with one of his shots, the bank 3. I just expect him to be more aggressive on the post and finish better. The big difference in this series from ‘08 is gasol and bynum. They didn’t have bynum and he not only brings someone who can bang down low but just his presence is daunting. If Bynum was out and Odom had to start this would be a completely different series. Bynum may not get 10-15 pts every night, nor will he pull down 10 boards and 3 blk shots every night. But he clogs up the lane and changes shots. Since he can’t be bullied by perkins like Odom or gasol would he is a very important asset to the Lakers they are going to need him to win this series. Gasol has been playing tougher too. I think they went away from him too much in the 4th too. If the lakers hope to win game 4 and take a strangle hold on this series the 4th quarter is going to have to be the gasol/ kobe show. Artest takes the worst shots and is still learning, but he is so crazy he should have his own reality tv show. I’d actually watch that one.

For the Celtics it is actually pretty simple for they need to do. They did a good job of getting KG back into the series. Now they need to do the same for Pierce and keep feeding allen, the shots will go down sooner than later. Get things in transition and let rondo do his thing. Attack bynum, you can get him in foul trouble. And bring more intensity and don’t sleep on fisher! I think celtics take game 4 and lakers will take game 5 and close this series out in 6.

Right on about 7. I don’t think he called “bank” and didn’t realize the banks were open so late in Boston! Still he did contribute especially with the late nifty drive to the hoop and lay up.

Without Bynum and Artest it would be a different series. The Lakers simply were not strong enough in the post with Ariza and Odom on the starting 5. Odom makes the bench better. Think about it…he had abot 75% of the bench points last night. Bynum has been gutsy and impressive in his time on the court. He has grown up this year and pitched in.

Since I have tickets to Game 7 I still say Lakers in 7. Although I can tell you I would not be disappointed if my game was not necessary and I was just planning on being at the Parade down Figueroa that day!

Lakers Need Bynum

When Bynum couldn’t go in the second half the Celtics brutality took over. Without the big 7 footer to clog the lane the Celtics sent wave after wave of big crashing bodies into the paint taking offensive rebounds and blocking Lakers shots.

After a horrible 3 second call on Garnett by the refs and an incensed Boston crowd the refs were stunned. In the second half they allowed Boston to whack Kobe as he tried to get free, slap Gasol in the head going for a lay up and generally let Boston get away with everything to make up for 1 bad 3 second call that Coach Rivers complained incessantly about.

The series is knotted at 2-2. Boston looks a lot deeper than the Lakers and if Bynum can’t go, the Lakers just got thinner and shorter which will hurt against a hard hitting football team like Boston. Still, Lakers got their game in Boston and will come home to Staples next week. Still thinking Lakers in 7 but I’m hoping the Lakers get greedy and someone steps up to help Kobe and Gasol in Game 5. Tough series…

Gasol never goes over the back....

I know random huh? I pretty much agree with what you said except Boston wins in 6.

No chance

No team has won back to back games yet, no way boston is going to win 3 straight.
Bynum has the long layoff to get his knee right, the lakers will make the adjustments, they’re not many to be made. Just get bynum back in there and you officially shut down Glen Davis. If glen davis doesn’t have a carreer play off night, lakers win that game. No worries. I said lakers in 6 when it started. If the lakers take game 5 its gonna be tough for the celtics to fly back to LA and avoid getting closed out on the road. At best the celtics will win in 7.

Yea

They were mugging gasol down low. The Lakers still could have won if Kobe didn’t make that bad pass at the end, they were down 6 right? Rondo hits the layup and its over. If he hits a tough 3 its a 3 point game with 30 seconds left. Plenty of time to play tough D, get a stop and try to win tie the game.

Bynum Has Knee Drained & Vows To Play Sunday

Andrew Bynum is injury prone. Andrew Bynum missed the 08 series against Boston and came up lame at the end of last year limping to a Championship with the other Lakers in 09.

Bynum has proven his mettle and manhood in these 2010 playoffs. With a torn meniscus late this season he had to shut it down the last 3 weeks. Not recovered when the playoffs started Bynum didn’t care. He gamely put up decent numbers against OKC, UT and PHX.

Bynum had the knee drained again early Friday morning. I am surprised the knee has held up this long. If he can give the Lakers about 20 minutes 3 more times the Celts Nose Tackle, Big Fat Ugly Drooling Baby Davis will be neutralized and neutered. If not, the Lakers will need the refs to blow the whistle when Fatso throws a body or shoulder in a Shaq like fashion into a Lakers defender or DJ Mbenga to step up and become a real player. As much as a factor as Artest has been on defense, the Lakers need some offense out of him and quality Andrew Bynum minutes…

Sunday's game

We all know Boston is going to come out with more firepower. Nobody wants to lose their last home game.
Lakers are going to pull an upset though….at least I hope so.

Then Boston will win game 6.
Lalers win game 7

That

was a bad miscall last night with the 24 second clock, I was screaming it did not hit the rim! I don’t know if it would have changed the outcome but it did hurt the lakers who were up to that point on a roll.

I don't think it would have mattered

Boston was at home for the last time this season. There was no way they were going to lose.
Which throws this out of the window:

Do Or Die Tuesday

Got to figure D Fish knows the consequences of losing and will be in high gear tonight against Rondo/Allen. Hoping Bynum can give them another 30 minutes tonight but with some contribution. Hoping Odom shows up. Hoping a Laker off the bench (Farmar, Brown Vujacic) can hit a couple shots and open up the floor for the Black Mamba.

Finally hoping the referee’s call a good game and let them play basketball and not rugby which is what went on in Boston. Not saying Boston didn’t deserve the W’s…they earned them. Just saying the play was reminiscent of playing goon ball at Highland Park in the 80s. No harm no foul no blood no ambulance only works in the rec league. Lakers don’t have Ray Lewis, Refrigerator Perry and Joe Frazier just Bryant, Fisher and Pau. Boston has Allen, Garnet, Rondo and a bunch of hockey goons. But if this is what Dave Stern wants this is what he gets…Force a Game 7! Go Lakers! As Chick The Great would say “It’s nervous time at The Forum.”

BTW

I don’t want to sound like a whiner. Celtics have earned their W’s as Lakers have theirs. It’s just that I don’t remember seeing seeing this type of play since Rambis/McHale. Lakers should have brought a couple more guns to this fight. Perhaps things will be different tonight? As for Hush…

I Know

But others will jam like mad on Deep Purple doing HUSH. BTW, thought Artest would give them more O. If only Bynum was healthy and Ariza could spell Artest to give us some O…and if the queen had…

Speaking of Ariza

What do you think of that trade now?

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." - Winston Churchill

by PixburghArn on Jun 15, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Really wasn’t a trade…Lakers offered Ariza a contract (same money they signed Artest for and about what TA got in Houston) but his agent played hardball with the Lakers FO and turned down the offer. Lakers then turned and offered Artest the money and he took it.

In the end, Ariza and Bryant couldn’t watch Pierce in 08. They needed someone that could watch a Pierce, James or Durant and stop them. Artest fills that bill. Problem is he is very uncomfortable in the triangle and playing O with KB. The 09 performance for Houston vs LA by Artest was stellar. He was their best player with or without Yao.

What the Lakers needed to match up with this much deeper team is a healthy Bynum to thwart Perkins/Davis and Artest to stop Pierce and contribute a little O. Bynum is hurt and Artest is elsewhere mentally with his O. Re; either or, can we have Artest & Ariza?
