Breaking: Mike Tomlin's contract extended

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that Mike Tomlin's contract has been extended through 2014. No further details are available at this time, so we have yet to find out how many Brinks trucks will be needed. Looks like the Rooneys have a big windshield and a small rear view mirror.

I am pleased to hear this

I enjoyed his first two years coaching, and in 2009 he put players in position to make plays to win games and they dropped the ball numerous times.

thank you

i was thinking the same thing about that “rearview mirror” jab. the guy’s been here for three years, and won two division titles and a superbowl, with no losing seasons. i’d say the rooney’s rearview mirror is just about the right size.

glad to see mike coming back. hopefully this is the first of many extensions.

Also

Think about this: People say he won a Super Bowl with another coaches’ players. How many coaches don’t win a Super Bowl with thei own players. Then there’s the talk of a break down. Cowher had his own players and had a letdown after his Super Bowl with his own players and below .500 at that. The fact that not many teams repeat should tell you it’s hard to do.

Read M. Lombardi's column on "Convenient Truths" at NFL.com

He talks about how team’s can talk themselves into believing a player can handle a certain position in the offseason and not have a Plan B in case they can’t. The column made me think about how the front office got caught with its pants down this past year by believing Willie Gay could be an NFL starting CB. When he stunk it up, they had no alternatvies or Plan B. I think that one miscalculation played a very large role in why the Steelers missed the playoffs this past year (granted, the 4 special teams returns didn’t help things either, but I digress).

I’m hoping that the front office learned from that blunder and will have a Plan A,B,C, & D for how to fill that RT position this year. I didn’t go any further than D because if it gets to that point, then it’d be time to look toward the draft anyhow. Thoughts?

by datruth4life on Jul 13, 2010 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

The thing that hurt them

was they didn’t anticipate having Gay come in as a new starter with Troy out. Not having Troy meant less athleticism at his position with the added fall off at Gay’s position. Missing a key piece and having a new guy can effect the comminication. And when a guy you figure on being just a small piece of the puzzle becomes a large piece because of the compromise with Troy gone, it cna get ugly. Make no mistake Gay had his work cut out for him. He wasn’t good enough to make up for some of the drop off when Troy was out. He was ok but not great when Troy was there. They also had one of their rookies out for the year. They were snake bit last year. Sure they would have loved to have B-Mac last year, but it is what it is.

How does 3-year contract compare?

It seems relatively short, but maybe I’m just thinking in terms of some player contracts.

Either way, count me among the ambivalent camp. I was a huge Tomlin defender when he was first hired but have grown increasingly skeptical as his time went along. Next season will be a huge test in my mind. I probably would have preferred to see him coach one more season before signing him — losing him is a risk I’d be willing to take to see if he’s the real deal.

That said, he’s probably earned more time to prove himself, so I’m not unhappy he was signed.

Love it!

But not a surprise if you are in any way a rationale human being (that would disqualify the Robert Ethans and other haters). Winning a Super Bowl at any time is incredibly hard which is why after nearly a half century only slightly more than half of the leagues teams have accomplished this. Repeating is even harder. This has happened only seven times. To suggest that Tomlin’s job should be in jeopardy because he won a championship in his second year but didn’t repeat is madness pure and simple. Unfortunately, the Nation has its share of mad hatters.

Can’t wait for the season to start.
