Non-Football: Beers

On the advice of my legal team, I have been told to make a beer poast.

Standard procedure here guys, poast a top 3 or 5 beers in the world, and compare, contrast and maybe we can all broaden our drinking horizons a lil bit.

I'll go first.

Star-divide

1. Coniston Brewery - Oliver's Light Ale

Light_medium

via www.conistonbrewery.com

A light straw coloured, easy drinking mild. Subtly hopped with Whitbread's Golding variety hop, and brewed using only the finest malt and a generous amount of demerara sugar.

A "meal" beer, if I am going to sit down for a few hours and talk to people over several pints, this is my weapon of choice, drink it slow, savour all the flavour and enjoy the company.

2. Desperados Beer

Desperados-large_medium

via www.beerstore.com.au

A personal favourite for the "pre-bev" these will get you drunk far quicker than your average beer. The tequila in them is about 1 shot per bottle, which means that you get 2 for 1 drinks!

A good taste surprisingly with mainly the beer coming through but for some reason the tequila still tasting damn good.

3. Tsingtao

Tsingtao_medium

via chaangthairestaurant.com

I was torn between this beer and Corona, I love Corona with a lime in the neck but without it, the taste just disappears. Tsingtao is a Chinese beer, that is still brewed in China in Qingdao. I love the taste of it, it's light and refreshing, I take these to the beach or to the barbecue or whatever in summer.

Now, give me your say BTSC!

Well this is apropo

FIRST!

Sam Adams Blackberry Witbier is my flavor of the month. Generally not a big fan of fruity beer but the Blackberry in this brew is subtle enough to not over power the palate.

actually the first was the spammer :(

I don’t do fruity beers at all, apart from a lime in my Corona, but that enhances it’s flavour.

Quick question, is cider popular in the US?

Yeah, that douche

Ciders have gained some popularity. Woodchuck Cider in particular comes to mind. I don’t favor them.

Can you get Sam Adams in England? That’s probably a dumb question, but if you can, give the B-berry Whitier a shot. Not your typical fruit laden beer I tells ya.

Sam Adams, it's not really available unless you really want to get some

and I’ve not been able to find the B-berry version on the net, albeit in 5 minutes.

Ciders over here are as popular as beer and it pisses me off, Cider is a girls drink, a fuity version of beer. It doesn’t help that my 2 best friends both love cider and hate beer, so they give me shit constantly.

love Yunegling

Though many New Yorkers would scoff at that.

The Texan in me still loves Shiner Bock. So good.

Despite living out in micro-brew country, not a huge fan. Just not much of a beer snob. Will drink and enjoy just about anything that’s not light.

I freaking love Tsingtao...

And got overly excited to see it cracked your list. It’s really one of the most surprisingly good beers I’ve ever had. As you said, very light, great on a hot day, it’s like if Sprite gave you a buzz.

By contrast, I’m also a Guinness guy, currently the only beer in my fridge. I drink Extra Stout, as opposed to Draught, but don’t mind the latter. They’re essentially the same.

Utica Club! Brewed in my home city, and was the first beer sold after prohibition ended.

I’d be remiss if I failed to mention Iron City, which is my brew of choice in Da ’Burgh.

Often if a Canadian beer is worse south of the border it is because it has been brewed in the US with by a different brewmaster* (I am assuming they still have them).

Great job aspiration...

If I could do it again, I would try to give that a go.

I’m pretty sure this stuff was brewed in Canada, then dumped in the river, and re-bottled once the river got to the US. Ugh.

you would know this place “The Flying Saucer” right off of Glendale st. in Raleigh, there are 500 different beers all on tap. if you become a member you allowed to drink as much as you want obviously, but to have a golden saucer with you name put on it and for it to be put on the wall your limit is trying up to 3 different beers each day. and once you hit that 500 you become a celebrity in the local pub!

The "Stellaaaa!!!" yell is also from

“A Streetcar Named Desire”.

As opposing quarterbacks crouched under center, Lambert pumped his legs up and down, thumping the turf like a war drum. He mouthed threats to opposing running backs that would make even the most hardened Catholic nun weep for humanity. He fulfilled those threats with coldblooded suplex tackles. Hansa

Dortmunder brewed under the German Purity Law of 1516 whose ingredients are:
Water, Barley Malt, Hops, Hop Extract

I did a little research and found it to be the beer of choice among German punks, it is inexpensive, the German equivalent of PBR but it tastes great. A proper Pilsner, not very hoppy, clean finish. AND it comes in 17 oz bottles.

I mean yes, it dose taste good, but the single most common beer among German punks (from my experience) is this:

under 4 Bucks for the entire case, 24 bottles of a half liter each… But also tastes disgusting.

Newcomer of the cheap beers: 5.0er

even cheaper then Oettinger, but also even more disgusting.

here we go! This might become my favorite poast of all time.

My top 5, nationally and internationally:

1. Flensburger Pilsner (short Flens)

Exchangable with Jever Pilsner, both delicious German beer. Rather bitter for the American taste, but if you grow up with it, you learn to love it. Especially on a warm summer night… But I am gonna stop there, I get too sad about sitting in an office right now. I will stop with the German beers there, because nobody else knows them. Let me know if you need more suggestions.

2. Desperado’s. See English’s original poast.

3. Kilkenny.

mentioned already above. Simply put, my favorite beer from the Western end of Europe (read: England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland). Great taste.

4. Heineken.

There’s pretty much a cult about this beer in Germany, and while I don’t get that, it is actually rather good. I have been a mass consumer of it in college, because it is the only beer available in Western PA that comes close to the northern German style of brewing in terms of its bitterness and overall taste. If you don’t like Heineken, don’t even bother with Flens, Jever, Astra, and the other northern German beauties :)

5. Yuengling.

I just had to put an American beer on there, and what better than Yuengling? From its style of brewing, it’s nothing like the kind of beer I am used to from back home, which is a huge advantage because light beer in the US… well, no offense, but it tastes like beer mixed with water to me. Yuengling is best on tap in my opinion, a great drink to have when at the bar.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my opinion about light beer, of course it’s all about what you grow up with. I just (and maybe other Europeans will agree with me) shudder at the thought of light beer… Might just be me tho.

It’s like the Monopoly Man (Early Years). I lived in East PA for a while and that was the PBR of the area hipster bars.

When I lived in England Stella came with every purchase of chewing gum at the corner shop in Street. It was the only beer available in a six pack and at a sweet discount £4. I guess it’s not a well respected beer over there. I liked it, drank the hell out of it, couldn’t afford not to. Then I get back stateside and these punters are trying to sell the stuff for $30+.

Tastes like alcoholic coffee….

He may or may not have chain-smoked at halftime, depending on who you ask.

For sixty minutes each Sunday, Jack Lambert was a demon.

yeah... welll... hmm...

on that note, you have been stripped officially of your ‘German’ status, because I call bullshit on that one :D Another one of those prejudices that are just far from being the truth. Warm beer sucks, but I have never had to deal with one in a bar… whether in south, west, or northern Germany.

guys don't take me too seriously when I talk about that

sorry if I came off like I actually meant what I was writing, I thought the smiley made it clear that I wasn’t.. Oh well, I am still not so sure about the truth of that statement, but of course you could find some Germans that prefer your beer warm (as you probably could in any country).

by Simonsen on Jul 30, 2010 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought that was the Brits

who didn’t believe in over cooling traditional beers.

I never had a warm beer (except in the girl’s dorm) when I was in Germany.

We like our beers cool and refreshing

apart from some brews that are meant to be drunk warm, can’t quite remember which one I had, but it was served warm and was good.

Also, for warm beers, try going to a festival in 105 degree heat and no way of cooling your beers. I was on warm beer until I succumbed and bought an ice box.

Warm beer

I had a geography prof who regaled us with his tales of doing a project in the Amazon (Peru I think). He talked of the joy of getting beer in with their supply shipments that, not being refridgerated, was warmer than blood. He said is was wonderful then though he prefers his beer cold.

umm yeah I dont know about that

any site that rates a bock beer (or even worse, doppelbock) among the best beers in the world is a little suspect to me. I have to admit though, I dont know any of the beers, so I wouldnt know if the rest is accurate or not. On a sidenote though, there sure is a huge American beer dominance (with the site from the US), followed by Germany.. don’t know what to make of that.

by Simonsen on Jul 29, 2010 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

I always assumed that Germany and UK beers were the best. Always had the impression the US was behind due to it’s young brewing history.

exactly my thoughts

and my experience so far. And then the part of the side being operated in the US… also, most of those beers seem pretty unknown. Yet, some of the best unknown beers that are kind of ‘insider tips’ come from Poland, the Czech Republic, and eastern Europe in general, but none of them is listed on there.

#1 beer is Black Rabbit Porter, only at Edgefield Brewery, Troutdale, Or.

Love that stuff.
Guinness, the cans with the CO2 deal are the best canned beer.
I’m a Indian Pale Ale guy first though. Fearless Brewery, Esticada, Or. has an IPA that is out of this world.
Bridgeport Brewery Blue Heron Pale Ale at one time was the best bottled beer I’d ever had. That was 25yrs ago and it still holds it’s own in a world of great beer.
Bridgeport also has a XX stout on tap that, with a slice of there garlic, fetta, and artichoke pizza, is a meal. Best stout on tap.
I always sort my beers by type and container.
MMM Beeeer, Douh!

I know where that is. I like their Terminator Stout. Not too sold on the Hammerhead, though…

You know Troutdale and “Incest-acada”, that means you must live nearby…Ever go watch Steelers games at the A & L? 60th and Division. A friend of mine owns it, Angelo.

I live about 2-1/2 miles due west of Edgefield.

I’ve never gone to the A & L for a game. I’ve been playing soccer on Sundays for years and now have Sunday Ticket. I get enough beer after soccer games at home make more sense.

A Ruby on a hot day sure is nice also.

Sounds good.

They basically close off one entire half of the bar, with 3 gigantic tv’s, all playing the game. With NFL Sunday Ticket, so there’s no chance of missing a game.

They also do a raffle at half time. I’ve seen them give away jerseys. There was a Lambert one, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, ETC…They do other stuff too, my wife won a pink Terrible Towel, I won a Steelers X-mas tree ornament. All sorts of wild shit.

small brewer in western North Carolina. Great beer. Based in Asheville, NC (small town of 60,000-80,000 people where I live) which recently won Beer Town, USA…..or something like that. Plus for my town? yes…..shameless? yes….

Don't know if I can rank them

Guiness Draft – (or draft in a can)
Fort Garry Dark – http://www.fortgarry.com/
Propeller Bitters – http://www.drinkpropeller.ca/beers/7-Bitter
Standard Lager – a classic from my teen years. The label is similar to Bud http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/molson-standard-lager/95613/
Beck/Heineken/Moosehead – All slightly different but for me similar. Preference left to right
Paulaner – not the wheat beers
Grolsch – similar to B/H/M but not quite the same
Sleeman’s Cream Ale – they make several good beers but this has been my personal choice.

I have left dozen’s of excellent brews of this list. Some that will never be on it…

Almost any major American and, increasingly, Canadian beer (I don’t know if it is my tastes are changing or if the formulas are but they are what they used to be). Labatt’s Blue is one beer that I never really could stand… or should I say couldn’t stand me.
