Steelers Sign Flozell Adams
Ed Bouchette reports:
"The Steelers came to terms on a two-year contract with veteran tackle Flozell Adams this afternoon and he will arrive in training camp with them this weekend."
The o-line battle in training camp just got even more interesting.

I really can't believe this
Still don’t like him and hopes Foster beats him out for the tackle position
Steelers football is 60 mins.
for what it's worth
he has a hearing problem in his right ear, which many in Dallas speculate contributed to his false start problem. Moving him to the right side could help… reference: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/120207dnspocowlede.257cffc.html
I tend to agree with the PGH guys in liking the move, he’s a nasty run blocker, and his pass protection problems could be minimized by moving him to the right side. ( http://www.postgameheroes.com/?p=9634 )

There have been a lot of bitter pills to swallow this offseason
and this is just another awful pill to swallow. I remember posting about how dirty he was and what a bum he was and how I was glad he’s not a Steeler. This is probably the first time the Steelers signed a player that I genuinely don’t like. This will be interesting. Hopefully he can help us out and not kick anyone.

Agreed
on all points. I’m not sure I want the future of our O-line learning from Flozell.
No, i think he is talking about the penalty thing.

If that happens...
It would be more to do with Hartwig’s shoulder situation.

why would we move starks
from the left side, where he’s been more effective, to right tackle, for Flozell Adams, who was the worst Cowboys OL in terms of giving up sacks last season.

Flozell Adams?
I know we are looking at tough situation on the line, but Flozell Adams? If he is the solution we are screwed.

What’s wrong with it? We all know he’s dirty as hell on the field. So are a lot of other players. But just because someone is dirty doesn’t mean they can’t play. Who would they have signed instead that would have been an improvement?
I’m sure not saying I like the guy but if he can help and be an improvement to the OL, then I don’t see a problem.

I'd rather the young guys on the team take the slot.
At least there would be some upside and they would get experience. Adams will be here two year tops, and if he gets the starts, that just leaves the young guys another year behind the curve.
Nope, don’t like this at all.
Wow........
….Im surprised at all the negativity. Its an upgrade at a position of need. He’s a 6 time pro-bowl tackle. For an O-lineman, hes not that old. I didnt expect this but I, for one, was glad to hear it!

definitely an upgrade from what we were left with
I’m fine with it.

there was a lot of discussion earlier
when the notion of Flo was first being discussed. A lot of concerns about dirty play vs Hines Ward style hard blocking. The off-sides issue was a major point then.
If our brass thinks this is the way to go, we need to respect that and Go with the Flo for now..

I don't like it, but I don't hate it.
His character and penalty proclivity are red flags. He’s a better run blocker than pass protector at this point in his career.
That said, I think he’s looked at as a RT only — enough speed to block edge rushers, but not on the left side, and a good run blocker. I’ll be interested in his attitude and performance in camp in the preseason.
Basically, I thought the wide-open competition would transform one of our many young, lump-of-coal tackle prospects into a diamond. I’m a touch disappointed that’s less likely (espeically for a vet with his issues), but having someone who can be a solid performer at the RT position and a backup swing tackle is important.
By the way, Tony Hills is gone.
Ridiculous
Id rather let someone else have a chance to take the job and make it their own rather than having a has-been on our team.
Now the question, Starks or Adams for LT?
Without me, youre only you
This, as said above, is an upgrade at a position of need...
My problem with it, besides the fact that Adams is a dirty, penalty machine, is that we didn’t even take a look at what we had in camp. Somewhat out of character for the organization…
But, if this is a move out of desperation, I will live with it and trust in our guys running the show. I hope this works out, but I have my doubts.

My guess
This is how we get a good look at what we have in camp. Tomlin loves competition.
As for Adams.. hate’emstank
I guess you're right...
But this does give them (our young guys) less of a chance to start, either way. Step your game up boys.

very interesting. i'm really curious to see his contract terms to see if his spot is guaranteed
i think it’s the right move from a talent stand point but i wonder from a personality stand point
no guaranteed money
so steelers are free to cut him if his personality isn’t meshing with the steelers system or he’s just too old.
it’s realistically only a one year contract for 2.5 mil this year, which is pretty reasonable. he’ll be cut next year cuz he won’t be worth the 5 mil as a 36 yo.
will you still love it the first time he knocks ray-ray flat on his back? ;)

Uh
how do we know for sure he will just be given the starting position. I’ll put money now that there will be a battle in camp.
Steelers football is 60 mins.
I have been against this
but being the optimist that I am, look at it this way: if he gets beat for a starter position (which will probably be at RT), the guy beating him for it (I’m rooting for Foster) will have earned his start. That would be my ideal scenario.
This is a great move
It eliminated a huge question mark going into practice. And that was do we have a guy that can competently play RT? Sure we had some possible options, but no definites. Adams provides us with a guy who has done very well at that spot, even with the penalties. I think he ends up starting week 1 and doing very well and holding the position.
Also, I think the Steelers did exactly what they did with Ryan Clark. His calling price was too high, so they pretended to not be interested and signed someone else. They let him sweat it out for a bit and then got him once the price was reasonable (I am assuming).
"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"
Is Flozell the Hotel better than the lowest offensive lineman on our depth chart?
I think the answer is yes. And there are so many question marks on the offensive line that picking him up seems to be a no-brainer.
Yes, there are also numerous question marks and red flags regarding Adams. But Job One during pre-season is to put together an offensive line that can control the line of scrimmage, support a short yardage running game, and protect the quarterback. We do NOT know if the younger players can do that. We DO know that Adams can still do at least SOME of that. And we also do NOT know who’s gonna get hurt in pre-season. This is a good move.
In the best of all worlds, the OL will jell without Adams and play lights out and the Steelers won’t need this former Cryboy. But that’s prolly not gonna happen, folks.
If there’s one hallmark of Coach Tomlin’s tenure, it is that he knows his team’s strengths and weaknesses and focuses in the offseason like a laser on fixing the weaknesses. This year, it’s ST, OL, and the running game. He’s gonna need Adams.
So let’s welcome our new best friend, Flozell. (sound of one hand clapping) It’s not how we feel about him now, but, rather, how we feel after the first four games, assuming our starting quarterback is still alive and there are a couple of wins by the time BB gets back.
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

Haha...
I love your sig. Yea, great signing. At the very least it provides much needed depth. I think he will play LT wether he starts or not. He’s never played anywhere else. Also, its a great indication from the FO that it is committed to winning this year. Cuz if the O-line is good and they stay reasonably healthy otherwise……the sky’s the limit!

This is the right move
Flozelle Adams isn’t guaranteed anything. Although he is probably as good or better than any offensive lineman that we have, he will have to earn his keep. There is no guaranteed money. He will get $2.5 million if he makes it onto the active roster. If he really shines he can earn $5 million next year. At this time of year there is not a better move we could have made. If he flops, he is dropped, and the Steelers lose nothing.
Dennis
This is a great move
I hope you guys are as excited about it as I am!

Cowboys fan here
Flozell isn’t necessarily a complete dirtbag, he’s just all about protecting his quarterback. In the last year or two, age has caught up with him, so sometimes the only way he can prevent his quarterback from getting crushed is by tripping a guy up. There’s no malice involved.
As for the Justin Tuck situation last season, he claims he didn’t know the play was over, but who knows.
Is there any other Cowboys fan out there who will gladly take Tony Romo over Aaron Rodgers any day?
