O-line predictions/bragging rights po(a)st

Still not a lot of real news coming out during training camp, (luckily, considering dudes at other training camps are dropping like flies) so this is somewhere between a post and a poast. More after the jump. (let's all keep Johnny_s happy!)

Star-divide

Nfl_g_steelersts_576_medium

(via espn)

So anyway, the point of this is to have a central place to predict what the starting O-line will be, come a beautiful Pittsburgh afternoon this September 12th. Obviously, we don't have a whole lot to go off of in terms of real information at this point, so it's more of a guessing game than anything else, but hey, that's what fans do. Just to make it interesting, let's say that the first person to post the correct line-up in this thread will get bragging rights, and.... oh let's say a beautiful Black & Gold scarf, knitted by BTSC's own momma rollett. (I didn't tell her that I was doing this, so whether you actually get a scarf will be between you and her - leave me out of it!)

Only rule: If the starting lineup ends up being the same as last year, with Adams substituted for Colon, the contest is off - too boring, so you've got to change it up a little.

I'll start things off, and post the line I want to see, rather than the line I really think we will see:

Max Starks -> Chris Kemoeatu -> Maurkice Pouncey -> Ramon Foster -> Flozell Adams

I think this is a line that could do some pretty mean run blocking, and blow most Defensive fronts right off the ball. (Maybe except for Terrence "can haz cheezburger" Cody, but him you just run around) Pass protection might be a little interesting/sketchy on the right side, but hey, we're used to that.

Sound off, yinz.

I think to start the season

Essex instead of Foster, so you are not changing 3 OL positions, 1 WR, 1 QB to start the season.
Once Ben gets back switch Essex for Foster, Samuels will have some experience, and then unleash hell.

I can't remember

did foster play any tackle last year? I’d be kinda surprised to see him get moved over after playing so much guard, but anything can happen I guess :)

I still don’t think Pouncey starts week one.

Of course I think Redman will be the #2 RB and K. Lewis will end the year at #2 corner.

I don’t know between Essex and Foster, Foster seems to look better, but reports are Essex and Adams look good together, so I’m leaning towards Essex getting the nod at RG. I’m a huge fan of Foster though, so let’s hope.

Not necessarily...

Center is the QB of the line, so knowing the system as much as possible is important there. If he picks up the playbook well, he should get some first team looks, but if he doesn’t (or even if he’s average in that regard) Legursky could get more first team reps, as he’s been in the fold a little longer.

We won’t know how well Pouncey is grasping things until preseason though, becuase you never know what you really know until you have to react instinctively. If he looks lost out there (which I think is some what of a longshot), Legursky will see more reps. And all that depends on Hartwig’s rehab progress, which I haven’t read a lot about.

And Pouncey has been learning everything at RG. It is a lot to ask of a rookie to come in, learn an entire play book, and two positions.

Mmmmmm....Pi....

As opposing quarterbacks crouched under center, Lambert pumped his legs up and down, thumping the turf like a war drum. He mouthed threats to opposing running backs that would make even the most hardened Catholic nun weep for humanity. He fulfilled those threats with coldblooded suplex tackles. He may or may not have chain-smoked at halftime, depending on who you ask.

For sixty minutes each Sunday, Jack Lambert was a demon.

Okay, I take up the challenge

And agree to knit the scarf.

As to my predictions, I can’t make mine yet until I’ve been to a few days of training camp. You all know my methods – I have to decide which is the BLA for each position…

Max Starks -> Chris Kemoeatu -> Maurkice Pouncey -> Ramon Foster -> Flozell Adams

Without question.

I really think the way Pouncey is blowing folks away, the future is now. Not because I’m impatient, but because regardless of contracts, you field the best team possible.

Pouncey is our best center. Hartwig just became a backup, in my opinion. Let the beatdowns on Baltimore’s self-proclaimed monsters of the middle begin. This kid is sheer nasty-flapjack badass.

Nasty-flapjack because he’s hotter than a flapjack fresh off the griddle, and he’ll cover your butter faster than you can say “Please pass the Aunt Jemima’s Syrup, please!”

I’d trade Woodley and Harrison for him straight up

Assuming we have Pouncey at RG and Adams at RT...

Anyone concerned that a rookie and a player new to the system on one side of the line together might be trouble early on? Neither is going to know 100% of the playbook, and each will need to learn what to do and where to be in our offense. I guess it’s a minor worry, but still something to think about.

As long as they put Redman on that side

there will be no problems – Redman will be in the endzone by the time the defense has noticed that the count is done…

Starks - Kemo - Pouncey - Foster - Adams

This lineup might have been posted already I didn’t scrutinize above…

Essex – Scott – Legursky – Jones are backups

The coaches have been keeping him at Center

So I would say no for right now.

If his feet get quicker and stronger, then who knows. Right now Pouncey, Foster, and Essex all have him beat out.

Sometimes it isn't even false!

Though judging by the comments below I may have been lucky in my choice. I did know Urbik was working as 2nd string center and Pouncey at guard but I wasn’t being too serious.

I don’t know if Pouncey would start the season as first string because I keep thinking that Sanders will win one of the first 3 WR spots and I can’t see two rookies starting on the offense for Day 1. I am not saying it can’t happen, but I have to think it is rare.

Actually...

With Hartiwg being a question mark, Pouncey seemingly set at guard, and Urbik practicing at center… you may be on to something. Urbik at center gives us a power blocking center to go up against the big DT’s in the division and root them out in the running game.
