Preseason Broncos Thread

Good afternoon gentlemen and ladies.  I took up the offer to come over and post a thread for any questions you may have about your next preseason opponents, my Denver Broncos.

One thing about this match-up...we've got some similarities.  Drama abound for both our clubs this offseason.  I'm glad we're finally playing some ball though so the focus can be on more of the things that matter.  Thankfully Tebow is currently injured, so the crazies out there have quieted down a bit for him.  He may play a bit Friday, but we've not heard anything concrete yet.

Post any other questions you have about us below and I'll stop by (as I'm sure other MHR guys will) and answer / debate / discuss.

I have a question

When Tebow heals people by laying hands on them, are they simply healed or do they come back even better and stronger than before?

by worldtrip on Aug 25, 2010 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

Ha!

Good one. But considering all the injuries the Broncos have had so far this year, the Mighty Tim hasn’t been so hot in that department in Denver. Better ask the Gators’ fans.

I couldn't tell you

I have yet to see any healing by Tebow yet, but I have seen his throws…I’m the milehighreport.com self-appointed Tebow critic (was very VERY anti-tebow before the draft). He throws an accurate ball for sure. If he can get his reads going quicker and speed up his release a little, he has potential.

Great question

Probably nobody very often…if the game goes anything like our preseason so far, we won’t run the ball much.

Buckhalter is back in practice now though and will probably see a little action. We have Justin Fargas who has been playing (but not doing much to cheer about so far), and a couple young guys Ball and Hall who have been okay.

Our O-line has been seriously missing Clady and it shows. The running game suffers for it. Also the two rookies starting on the line are better pass blockers so far than they are run blockers. This is one area I’m planning on watching pretty close. Other at MHR say that we will be a pass to set up the run team and I agree, but I’m a little old-school in that I believe we MUST have a running game of some magnitude to be successful.

I think we actually are…Orton will be a top 10 NFL QB this year if he stays healthy believe it or not.

1. Brady
2. Brees
3. Manning
4. Rodgers
5. Rivers
6. Roethlisberger
7. McNabb
8. Romo
9. Manning, Eli
10. Brett Farve

Who in that list would you put him over.

If you are talking statistical:

Roethlisberger is out because he’ll only play 12 games.
McNabb? On a new team with only TE’s as receivers?
Romo? Maybe I’m wrong there.
Eli? Good but not great.
Favre? Sidney Rice is out ofr a long time, and Harvin has his problems.
Lots to think about, but you are going to be surprised by Orton.

Nah

I’m talking about the top 10 QBs periods.

Qb isn’t always about stats, I’m talkin about talent, ability and leadership.

I would be surprised by Orton. If they thought he was that good then why take Tebow in the first round. obviously your own coaching staff doesn’t think orton has the potential to be elite.

It's a puzzle

As to why they took Tebow. I regret that they did.
but I think they thought that Tebow could be tremendous – high risk, high reward. Not the first time a tema with a good QB used a first round pick on a QB. And it was #25 after all.
Plus, I think Orton has surprised even McDaniels this summer, who was pretty sure Orton would be much better this year.

Well said bradley.

The rest of the NFL will doubt, but I’ve watched Orton closely over the past year and he is playing really good football. Go back and look at his stats from last year playing on two bad ankles and with a broken finger. It was his best year in the NFL…and now he is in his 2nd year in this offense.

I’ll stick with what I’ve predicted…only an injury will keep Orton from being the biggest QB surprise of this NFL season.

by sadaraine on Aug 25, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It was his best year

and it was still lackluster, after the 2nd half of the season teams figured out he couldn’t throw the deep ball and it was over after that. don’t make be go and break down the stats.

If I feel like i will. Maybe there is validity to your comments. Even if there is, QBs are always dinged up someone, never expect them to go through the season without some kind of injury. so that can’t be used as an excuse, same thing I told a ravens fan. But I’ll be surprised if Orton is even the #11 best QB in the league this year. Time will tell.

For sure

Lets rearrange that list according to total Super Bowls won and see what it looks like, and even include Orton (though he clearly doesn’t belong there, lets humor people) . We could go on and on comparing nearly every single passing statistic, winning percentage, championships, etc. But the point is, Orton doesn’t put most of those guys shoes on.

Well,

Why not. Though I think Rodgers needs to sustain his season from a year ago for a little longer. However, I think the top 5 at this point can be considered somewhat interchangeable. You might even rank ’em by Super Bowl victories at this point which would go a little sumptin like this:

Brady
Ben
Manning
Brees
Rodgers

Manning and Brady are no longer head and shoulders above everyone else, that is fo sho.

To me, it should be:
1. P. Manning
2. D. Brees
3. T. Brady
4. A. Rodgers
5. B. Roethlisberger
6. B. Favre
7. M. Schaub
8. D. McNabb
9. E. Manning
10. T. Romo

Orton

Passed for 3800 yards and 25 TD’s last year, playing on two bum ankles after getting the bone at the top of his right index finger shoved through the skin in pre season. His O line started to crumble in game 7 when RT Harris went out. His first year in Mcdaniels complicated system (Tom Brady says it takes 3 years to learn it), with new coaches and new receivers.
See what you think on Monday.

Have the Steelers been doing much blitzing this pre season? We haven’t seen much, which has been a good thing for our patch work O line.
Also depends on who you mean by QB. Orton has been very good at moving around enough to avoid any rush. Brady Quinn and Tebow have shown very little pocket presence.

The Prodigal son is in the middle of a return

Jarvis Moss has been stepping it up (finally!) with this opportunity. He has a cast on one arm, but has been playing his best football to day (3 year pro).

Robert Ayers has been doing his part too…he was one of our 1st rounders last year that is starting to look good. He doesn’t have the umph that Doom does, but he is typically the guy that causes pressure on the opponents so far this preaseason.

Doom hasn’t been IR’d yet as there is a chance we can get him back in week 11 or so. I don’t know how that is going to play out though…if we don’t IR him he takes up a roster spot during the regular season…one that could be used on someone to develop. If we look good through the first 5 – 6 games, my guess is that they will try to get him back.

What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of your team? What is your honest expectation of this season considering the injuries? When you think of Isaac Redman do you have a feeling like a sneeze only better?

by worldtrip on Aug 25, 2010 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

Answers

Biggest strengths Offense:

  • WRs – even after trading the Beast away this looks like a VERY promising group of guys…cuts in this area will be tough decisions.

 * Kyle Orton – this guy is playing out of his mind so far…most of us are anticipating a surprisingly good season from him.

Biggest weakness Offense:

 * Young O-line: These guys look okay so far…but they will make or break the season by how well they hold the line.

 * Backup QB – I honestly thing Tebow should be our backup…which coming from me isn’t a good thing…Tebow isn’t ready, but Quinn has sucked that bad so far.

Biggest strength Defense:

 * DBs hands down – Yeah…throw on Champ Baily please…or throw over the middle with Dawkins bearing down on the crossing routes.

Biggest weakness Defense:

 * LBs – The loss of Doom is huge. DJ is injured and the others are either young or not “wow” LBs.

Honest expectations:

 * I’m thinking we go 8 – 8 to 10 – 6 The injuries we have aren’t major other than Doom and the offense looks much more comfortable than last year.

Isaac Redman: No I don’t :P

Biggest strengths Defense:

Roethlisberger on the field is great

If the question had been “Roethlisberger or Orton?” I might have had a different answer. But maybe not. I’ve liked Orton since his rookie year in Chicago, and like him a lot more now. I’ll say this – I think Roethlisberger has peaked, and Orton is just starting to get it going. He didn’t get a fair shake in Chicago (certainly not like Roethlisberger or Brady in their first couple years) but he will have a good time this year, if the O line can come together. And our good news is that LT Clady is finally back at practice after a partial patella tear last spring playing basketball.

But I don’t think Ben has peaked yet. I have a feeling he is going to peak all over everyone when he gets back in this year. And I think when he does, he is going to peak long and hard.

Ben’s ceiling is higher than Orton’s honestly. He throws a better ball and is a better decision maker (as far as going through your progressions goes).

I think Orton is going to take a step back from last year without Marshall.

Could be. Like I’ve said, I have a lot of respect for Ben on the field, and if he’s learned anything about off the field behavior lately, that would be great.
Orton will not take a step back without Marshall. One of the smart things McDaniel did was ship Marshall off – he’s dropping passes and kicking the ball in Miami. Real head case. In the meantime, Broncos are loaded at wide receiver. Like Sadaraine said above, it’s one of our strengths.
I’ll be interested in your opinion come Monday.

I don't buy it

Only two guys in the entire NFL had more catches than Marshall last year and only 6 with more receiving TDs. You don’t just replace that. IMO, Marshall is the 3rd best WR in the league

As much as I think the Steelers have done to plug the void of Santonio Holmes, I realize that you just don’t easily replace a 1,000 yard WR and I wouldn’t say Holmes is as good a player as Marshall. We will see a drop off without him, the extent of that drop off is the question.

"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"

by John Stephens on Aug 25, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a valid point

But I think Orton will have better numbers without Marshall. He is lighting it up so far, hooking up with Jabar Gaffney on deep balls. Eddie Royal looks to be more like his rookie year than last year. First round pick Demaryius Thomas has looked good while trying to get back from injury. 3rd round pick Eric Decker looked great last week. Brandon Lloyd is doing great (but the rap is he always does in pre season). Matthew Willis, a second year guy, is real fast and real tough. Anyway, Orton is about the top rated passer in the league so far, this pre season. Yes, it’s pre season. Talk to me on Monday.
I for one am glad that Marshall is gone.

I'm okay with that though

Your opinion doesn’t mean jack to me. I’m used to the MSM saying we are going 4 – 12 (that started last year) even though I know our team is better than that. I would be surprised if anyone from a Pittsburgh blog thought Gaffney was a threat honestly. So no biggie…

This year the no-brained Broncos headlines go something like this:

“Tebow vs Orton is a big QB controversy for the Broncos”

“I don’t see how the Broncos can replace the production of Brandon Marshall”

“Kyle Orton couldn’t QB his way out of a paper bag”

by sadaraine on Aug 26, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

My opinion was enough to make you comment

I am not one of those people who say you will be 4-12. I do not however think you will overtake San Diego for the Divison. If anything, it would appear, by virtue of recent trends, that Denver starts out strong and San Diego can’t get out of the gates. This reverses by the end of the season and San Diego takes the division and loses in the first round of the playoffs. I can see Denver being 9-7 with Oakland right on your heals and KC taking it in the rear.

In fact, I’ve never said any of those other things above either. I do like Orton but he is not better than Ben R. You will never be able to put together a case strong enough to convince me otherwise. Is Orton a “better guy” perhaps, but that doesn’t win any football games. If you ask me who I’d rather have a beer with, well, maybe its Orton, unless I was looking to get laid and/or arrested.

You clearly have a homerized attitude which I can appreciate, but, if you want to have serious football conversations, you need to temper that. Of course, this is all IMWO.

One can have a serious football converstation and still be a homer

My answer wasn’t “Orton is better than Ben”, its “I’d rather have Orton as my QB over Ben”

Ben is too aloof of a teammate on the field and too much of a dirtbag off the field. He may be changing that this year from what I’ve heard, but actions speak louder than words.

I also don’t think Ben is a good fit for the type of offense we run. He isn’t quick about reads at all…it is a really good thing that he has had the benefit of a strong offensive line for how long it takes him to get the ball out.

Let me clarify for you…I know your O-line currently lacks. I’m talking about back around 2005 – 2008. My key word you guys are overlooking is “had”.

I admittedly don’t watch the Steelers religiously, but I do watch them and he does take a long time for anything past 2 reads and holds the ball too long often enough for me to notice.

Yeah the guy gets sacked a lot, but how much has to do with how long he holds the ball? Luckily he’s big and scrappy enough to pull it off often enough.

2008

Might be the worst line we had. That year is the reason most Steelers fans think Ben is a top 5 QB in the league.

I think you are confusing Ben not wanting to give up on a play with him not going through his reads. Ben holds on to the ball that long because he doesn’t like throwing the ball away. He knows that if he can stay up it is really hard for a DB to hold coverage past 4ish seconds. Unfortunately, that is the same window for it becoming hard for an OL to hold a block.

It's interesting to see how high Broncos fans are on Orton

I said last year that take away the draft picks you got in exchange for Cutler and the Broncos still got the better end of the Cutler trade. I don’t think Orton is a Top 10 QB in the league by any stretch but he’s in an ideal situation for his style of game. I thought the trade that sent him to Denver was a master stroke. I could see Orton as finishing the season with better stats than Big Ben, for sure. With McDaniel’s O I could see that most seasons from now on. But Big Ben will win more games that Orton most years. He’s a gamer and I really haven’t seen that from Orton. But I can totally understand the enthusiasm for Orton in that system.

The best part of playing the Broncos is having you around more.

For what it is worth, my impression of Orton is that he may very well be underrated and better than anybody expected him to be, and it is hard to imagine him being top 10. I agree he is better than Campbell, but Cassell is a pretty good qb.

What is the general consensus on Tebow in Denver?

Recognizing that I am asking this to a fan base in which after John Elway went to the Broncos the newspaper there had a giant front page article titled “Saint John!”

by worldtrip on Aug 25, 2010 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

Don't think there is one, exactly

Most of the average fans are excited about a first round QB. Then there are the Tebow gushers. Then you have people like Sadaraine and me who really disliked the Tebow pick (I was really hoping the Broncos would take Dan Williams with the 25th pick). But I think that the ones like myself have started to say, he may be really good some day. He showed some good poise in the Bengals game, and made some good throws, mixed in with bad ones. Then got himself hurt at the end of the game on a meaningless play.
I just heard he’s back at practice for the first time in ten days, so maybe he’ll play some on Sunday.

I seem to remember hearing

that he had poise and leadership skills but was lacking the ability to throw the ball effectively enough to be a top-notch NFL QB. Time will tell I guess.

Tebow threw a nice pass in the Cleveland game

4o plus yards, damn near on the money, to out young Matthew Willis, who you will likely see on sunday. Pass wasn’t quite perfect, but close. Problem for me, and a few others, was that all the Tebow gushers thought it was perfect, and the drop was all on Willis.
It’s hit or miss though, with his passes. But he’s a rookie.

Two parties

The majority: This is the 2nd coming of Elway – he is the savior and is going to raise our franchise from the ashes like the mighty pheonix. We have tons of people now cheering for us because of this guy that don’t even know who Terrel Davis is. Even some die-hard fans think this guy is the future in some form or fashion.

The minority: Tebow was a bad pick. He hasn’t even shown the decision making skills required to play in a pro offense and his long wind-up throwing mechanics are going to cost us turnovers if and when he becomes the starter.

I’m with bradley in the minority group, but like I said above, I AM impressed with what I’ve seen so far in this preseason. I have no delusions though, these aren’t real football games and he hasn’t shown that he has it to me yet.

Will Denver beat the Oakland Raiders this year?

Raiders are looking improved this year – how do you think the Broncos match up with their bitter division rivals?

by EdmontonSteel on Aug 25, 2010 2:35 PM EDT reply actions

Broncos and Raiders usually split the series

Just one of those things. I think the Raiders will be much better this year, mostly because they got rid of their big albatross. Jason Campbell is a good QB, IMO, and certainly much better than JaFatso. Also, Bruce Gradkowski showed some toughness last year – he actually outplayed Campbell statistically. Raiders will surprise some people this year – they did beat the Eagles, the Bengals, and (sorry) Pittsburgh.

BQ

I think it’s too early to judge myself. He’s got a lot of issues that need to be fixed, not including what Cleveland did to his head.

I’m in the wait and see boat myself. Give him some time to get right in his own head this year, not being the every other week starter will help that greatly, and calm down, then we’ll see. He’s got the arm strength, just needs to work on accuracy and patience.

How could anyone have that much to say about the Chiefs? I mean we don’t post nearly that much and half of ours are off-topic.

He was a good guy (still is) and used to spend a lot of time at MHR, then he got the Chargers blog going. Then work requirements made him give it up and some other guy took it over. He’s a clone of BBS.
He did a couple of these kinds of posts at MHR prior to Broncos/Chargers games and was pretty insulting at times – at one point he was forced to apologize (sort of). Fairly knowledgeable though.

I love it when someone can work in a Princess Bride reference.

As opposing quarterbacks crouched under center, Lambert pumped his legs up and down, thumping the turf like a war drum. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Over?

The kid looks bad right now. I don’t like the idea of him being 2nd string right now, let alone starting for sure. He’s probably an improvement over Chris Simms though…Simms was HORRIBLE last year.

I think most of us also realize that McDaniel’s offense has a very steep learning curve for it. Tom Brady said it takes 3 years in the system to get it down. Quinn has had one training camp and off season so far…he may come out of it, but I don’t want to see him on the field during the regular season.

I'll jump in for a bit.

I think he’ll be a good to great Head Coach. (Personally I actually like what he’s doing) He’s had some ups and downs, made some rookie mistakes, etc. But that is to be expected when your trying to fix a mediocre team.

What I find funny is people are bitching and moaning about losing Shanny, yet this is the same group that a year before that were calling for Shanny’s head. (Shanny is a great coach, I just think he was getting stale being at the same place for so long, even the players quit listening)

As for who I would want? I kind of like the whole “New” feel, which is one reason I’m glad our DC is Wink and they didn’t hire some known quantity.

Quit drinking the Kool-Aid and start drinking the good stuff, and everything is always alright.

Do I like McDaniels?

for the most part. He’s done some things I don’t like (getting rid of Cutler and Marshall are not included in that – good riddance to both of them). But by and large, he’s done a good job of building a team the way he wants it. He has installed an incredibly complex passing game, and Orton is just getting good at it. Plus Orton’s receivers like Gaffney and Royal and Lloyd are just now getting the feel of it.
“If he were not your coach, who would you want?” You know, I didn’t like Rex Ryan a year and a half ago, when Pat Bowlen was interviewing for a new HC. Thought he was an a@*. But I’ve come to like the guy, and there’s no denying that he’s done a heck of a job with the Jets.

Just read a quote from Tomlin that DD is going to get some time with the ones against the broncos sunday. Still torn on Lefty vs DD tho. You can win with a DD type QB but not enough to win a SB IMO. But we aren’t asking either of them to do it all, just 4 games worth.

McDaniels

He hasn’t been perfect, but I, for one, don’t miss Cutler, Marshall or Scheffler. They all had some ability, especially Marshall, but all had major head problems. Any new HC needs to clean house a bit, and McD had no choice really in getting rid of those guys. Long story, won’t go into it all here. Tomlin, in contrast, was lucky to inherit a real good team.
But I’d take Orton for Cutler straight up, as a bottom line. And McD did much better than that. He’s a pretty sharp guy.

Cmon, that is stupid

I know Cutler wasn’t perfect, but give him your Oline and a better OC then he could be great. He is a far better QB than Orton is and ever will be. I like Orton more than most here but that said, no way is he better than Cutler straight up.

Orton – 11th in yards. Cutler 13th
Orton 21 TD’s. Cutler 27
INT’s – Orton 12, Cutler 26.
I’ll take Orton.

Like I say, compare O lines,

You had a very solid O line whereas Chicago had almost nothing but the jerseys they were wearing. You had a great defense early season whereas Cutler had a below average one.

Cutler is a lot better than Orton, no matter how you look at it. Do I make that trade? Yes because that many picks is outrageous. Is Orton a flat out better WB, no.

Maybe you are thinking of the Broncos 08 O line

which was terrific. But it fell apart in 09, by week 7, when RT Harris went down, and McD’s new power block scheme caused some of the old zone block guys to not do well, to say the least. LG Ben Hamilton and Cneter Casey Wiegmann are gone, because they couldn’t cut it the way McD wanted it to be cut. Orton had to work behind a disintegrating line. He did not have a good line after Week 7, which is a big reason the Broncos went 2-8 after starting 6-0.

I’m gonna go with Orton over Cutler here too.

Orton sucked in Chicago, but they are hard on QB’s there just like Cleveland, they eat them alive in the press. I think he’s got issues to get straightened out, but Orton could become a very efficient QB easily.

Cutler is a head case who gets too emotional in the game, he’s gonna lose you tense games the way Roethlisberger wins them. Orton won’t lose them, and he’ll give your team the chance to win it, as long as they can do it.

by Phantaskippy on Aug 26, 2010 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree completely

Orton is a better QB. The biggest indicator of a great QB is W – L record to me. Orton is a winner. Cutler is a loser It is as simple as that.

Why then, did your team finish with the same record with both playing QB? And iirc wasn’t the 08 season plagued by injuries for your team, all that points to the fact that your team was likely better with Cutler. However after 2 extra first rounders, I think that might change.

As I say above, the trade was the right move, but to argue the Orton is the better QB is plain stupid.

There are sane reasons actually

I actually think the offense as a whole was much more potent when Cutler was here because the system had been in place for some time. The defense in 08 was horrid and pathetic.

In 09 our defense started off in excellent shape, then lost gas as the season went on. The offense was mediocre at best due to the implementation of a new system.

Note here I’m talking about the overall team, not just the play of the QB because team means more than QB to me…yes QB is arguably the most important one player, but without a good team, you don’t make the playoffs and you certainly don’t win games in the playoffs. I’d rather have Orton because he is much more stable than Cutler. He is far better at read progression and decision making. Cutler has a better arm and a serious ego issue that I am thankful we don’t have.

I don't know about that, jman.

Campbell got hurt last night because their offensive line couldn’t stop a 7 year old girl from getting to the QB. Plus Michael Bush broke his hand yesterday.

Truthfully, I don’t see it. I don’t understand the hype. “Addition by subtraction” of Jamarcus Russell is all well and good, but you have to do something in the positive direction and I just haven’t seen it yet.

the raiders wide receivers can ball. they’re all lightning fast and they’re learning how to catch. bruce or jason can lead this team, but I think jason really shines this year in a role that actually wants him to flourish. michael bush was a big short yardage weapon of theirs and it sucks that he went down. the raiders have a lot of big talent on that team with a lot of valleys. if tom cable can find a way to make the weaknesses more like their strengths, they can pull out the division. chargers falter early, denver falters late, and as long as oakland is consistently average, they could win the division with 9 wins.

Got a question on your 3-4 Defensive Line

Obviously being Steelers fans we know a fair bit about 3-4 Defensive Linemen, I know everyteam plays the 3-4 D slightly differently but how worried are you guys about the over 30s brigade’s ability to actually stop the run? Jamal Williams has been a really great NT in this league but he’s really old now and the other 2 guys you picked up this year would probably struggle to even make the Steelers roster. Were you a bit disappointed to see the first 2 picks go on a WR and a part time QB when there was a lot of 3-4 DL talent around in round 1? Given that it takes most guys a year or 2 to learn the new positions on a 3-4 DL was not picking up some better/younger talent in this year’s draft something that’s likely to come back and bite you more over the next couple of years? How do you feel about going to the 3-4 in the first place? I always figured it would suit Dumervil down to the ground (he has the quickest first step of any player I’ve ever seen I think), but I didn’t really see the other building blocks there for it last year (unlike Green Bay) and I really don’t think they’ve drafted well in 2009 or 2010 to go to a 3-4 successfully either. Be interested to hear your thoughts.

Over 30's brigade

The hope is that several younger guys who had to start last year (and wore down as a result) will do a good job of rotating with the new but older guys. Jamal Williams is looking real good, after a whole year off with his biceps injury. Justin Bannon came over from the Ravens – you all probably know more about him than we do, but he has looked good so far. Jarvis Green came from the Pats, and will mostly be a pass rush DE.
The younger guys include Ryan McBean, who was on the Steelers (PS mostly, I think) in 07. He started last year at DE – when he went out with an injury, the D got worse, whether because of his absence or not?
Marcus Thomas will be in his 4th year from Florida. He’s been moved around a lot and had to deal with new coaches and new scheme last year. Hopefully he’ll have a good year – very talented, athletic guy who has played both NT and DE.
Ron Fields came with Mike Nolan from SF and played NT last year but he’s probably more suited for DE.
LeKevin Smith came from the Pats last year and is a solid rotation DE.
As far as not drafting well in 09 or 10 for a 3-4, I agree. It kills me that we took Tebow at 25 instead of Dan Williams, the DT from Tennessee, who went to AZ at 26. I think Williams will be a very good DT for years.

by bradley on Aug 26, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Definitely agree on Williams

When the Broncs traded up into the first round I thought for sure it’d be to pick up Williams or maybe Jared Odrick as a 3-4 DE. I really think there was huge value there for a 3-4 team, even with those guys off the board in round 2 I’m not sure I could’ve resisted Terrence Cody in round 2 when they picked Beadles either.

I guess I have a lot less confidence in the Broncos DL than you guys do. Bannon might make the Steelers roster, just, at DE. McBean couldn’t and wouldn’t now either. I think only Williams would for sure to be honest. I just feel like the Broncos rushed into the decision to go to the 3-4, more because it was the fashionable thing to do. Whereas you look at the Packers and you could easily see they already had a lot of guys who’d fit the system well and they still drafted a 3-4 DL guy in Raji in 2009 and Mike Neal in round 2 this year to play DE.

by KiwiSteelerFan on Aug 26, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

The only time I feel better about

taking Tebow instead of Williams is when I stop hitting myself with the hammer.
We had a nice young QB in Tom Brandstater (late round draft pick in 09 from Fresno State) who is big and has a good arm and is smart, something you need to be in McD’s system (and which neither Quinn nor Tebow is, IMO). Brandstater was cut a few weeks ago and was picked up by the Colts and is doing good there, I hear, despite the late start. So we could have had Williams and Brandstater. Williams is going to be real good.
Ouch, gotta put the hammer down now.

Tebow is about ticket and merchandise sales. If he eventually pans out as a starter it will be a bonus.

Thing is...

Broncos have been selling out the stadium for decades, there aren’t many more tickets to sell. It’s my understanding that the Jersey sales are split evenly among the teams.

I really believe that McDaniels chose Tebow because he liked what he saw and figured he could fix what needed fixing.

I think Tebow is going to surprise a lot of people and really mature into an NFL caliber QB. He may not be your next Elway… but he certainly won’t be the next Cutler. (He also isn’t the worst kid to have in the locker room, either.)

The jury is out for me

My big concern for this defense is stopping the run and I haven’t seen any solid proof yet that we have the nutz to get it done in the trenches. They looked good against Cinci, but looked poor against Detroit.

I will say that Jamal looks very good…I don’t get too concerned with older guys. If they have the drive and make it through TC, then that means they have proved they have it to the coaches (who know much more than I do about what they want and how risky it is). We have Dawkins, Baily, Goodman…our defense has some long-in-the-tooth guys that are superb.

I was disappointed with how we drafted early…Thomas wasn’t a surprise to me, but I was super against Tebow any earlier than the 2nd round (started off at 3rd round, but he grew on me a little as we debated it). I agree with you that we need more young talent that we can develop for our D-Line.

Going to the 3 – 4: I don’t care which way we go as long as we do it well. I think last year, we actually ran a fair amount of 5 – 2 that most people watching don’t notice at all. It was an interesting way to maximize the impact of the type of players we had. I am more curious to see how we play call in the regular season…everyone knows the preseason is vanilla with a side of vanilla wafers.

Yeah I wasn’t really suggesting that they’re not good players, because they’re old, just that Williams has this year, and maybe next year left in him? But they didn’t draft his replacement this year. I dunno I guess the guys you signed this season look a lot like stop gaps but I’m not sure any of their replacements are on the roster anywhere yet. What’s happening with the kid out of Hampton from last year? Chris Baker was it? I’m the webmaster for draftboardinsider.com, our scouting guy was a big fan of Baker as a late round 3-4 DL guy but he was going to need a lot of work and a couple of seasons before he was up to speed.

by KiwiSteelerFan on Aug 26, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Chris Baker

You know your stuff. Baker made the team last year (the 53 man team) but saw little action. He’s still there but so far has not wowed anyone. He had a bit of an injury in TC but is practicing again. Maybe we’ll see him on Sunday.
Baker started at Penn State but got kicked out because of a fight. So went to Hampton and did not get drafted. Broncos signed him as a CFA.
