That's What They Said: A New Era
Happy Friday BTSC! A long work week is finally over. I'm looking forward to the game this weekend against Denver, as I'm sure you are too. According to Yahoo! this game will be on FOX, so it will be available to the non-local and non-NFL Network crowd, so be sure to tune in at 8 pm Sunday. Also be sure to join the discussion both here and at Mile High Report.
Here's a few topics to toss about as we try and kill the next few hours until the weekend gets here.
"I have a low expectation when it comes to young people, not because I don’t believe they are talented, it’s just that they’ve got a lot going on. Professional football is different from college football. He has been surprising in terms of how he has adjusted at this point."
Coach Tomlin, on the big news of the week, rookie Maurkice Pouncey's practice promotion to starting center. The article on Steelers.com is quick to point out that no decision has been made as to who will start the season with the ones, but all signs point to the rookie takingthe position from the vet. Another promising quote regarding Pouncey came from a man who knows centers, and knows them well, Casey Hampton, found here courtesy of Johnny_S.
Long tenured Steelers linemen Trai Essex talking about another important cog in the team's passer protection machine, new RT Flozell Adams. He also notes that Adams starting week one is a "pretty much [a] done deal" in this Ed Bouchette PG article from Tuesday. I think we'll all be watching Adams closely this Sunday.
Two interesting quotes from the same article on the otherbig story this week, Dennis Dixon getting some first team action. First, from OC Bruce Arians:
"It's fine to run when there's nobody open but when there are open receivers, get them the ball"
And the second, from Ben Roethlisberger:
"I always tell him to run. 'Pull it down; if your guy's not there, pull it down and take off"
Thoughts on the difference of opinions?
On Some Former Steelers
"I never got paid for it. I asked [Burress] for it. Every time I went to Drew he said, 'That's between you and Plax.' Bottom line, I never got paid. He basically stole my number."
Long time NFL punter Jeff Feagles, on Plaxico Burress ducking out on some debt to Feagles, over the exchange of jersey numbers. I'm not a PLaxico fan, but Jeff... You're a punter. You're lucky you got a number. And Plax, pay the guy. What the heck. It couldn't have been thatmuch. I know Plax is pretty weak on paying money to people he owes it to from personal experience, I know he had some issues in the past with that. I'll leave that there, and no, he doesn't owe me anything.
"Veteran running back Willie Parker, listed at the bottom of the first depth chart, moved to third string, ahead of young players Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams, who are tied at fourth string"
Slightly older article in the Washington Post by Jason Reid. Fast Willie was on the outside looking in, but appears to be making a late push for reps this preseason. Good to hear, there will always be a soft spot for Willie amongst Steelers fans (TWSS). Of course, the Skins also added Ty Carter, mostly for depth, this week. Should be interesting to see Willie and Ty in burgundy and gold, while Santonio is running around in green and white tonight.
"Two seasons ago, when the Titans went 13-3, safeties Chris Hope and Michael Griffin were good players. They weren't last season. That has to change. We found out this offseason that Griffin played with a bum shoulder, so that contributed to his problems. He is young enough that he can rebound. Hope, now in his ninth season, might not be as fortunate"
Love and Hate on the Titans from Pete Prisco of CBS sports. Chris Hope falls under the latter of the two in this piece.
Keeping an Eye on This Weeks Opponent
Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels in a Denver Post article this week. I think we'll see most of our starters in for the same amount of time, as this is fairly standard practice in the preseason.
1. Eddie Royal gets a touchdown on an explosive play
2. Jarvis Moss gets another sack
3. Someone gets an interception.
Mile High Report's Nick Cast, making predictions for Sunday's game. In the article he quotes some guy named Johnny underscore S, whoever that is, on the Steelers. He also gives us a few match ups to look for during the game. Consider yourself on call Nick, we're watching these predictions. My only prediction, Maurkice Pouncey and Tim Tebow share a tender moment together before the game.

I bet a fun thing would be to go way back in time to where there was going to be an eclipse and tell the cave men, "If I have come to destroy you, may the sun be blotted out from the sky." Just then the eclipse would start, and they'd probably try to kill you or something, but then you could explain about the rotation of the moon and all, and everyone would get a good laugh.

Can't wait to see Pouncey
square off against Williams.
By the way, how does one pronounce Maurkice? Is it Mar-keece or Mar-kiss?
Anyway, MP is going snap someone’s a$$ up in a bear trap this weekend.
Also, these eyes will be on Dixon. Rooting so hard for that guy. Carpe Diem DD!!

Looking forward to seeing the new guys out there.
I know DD and MP are talked about a lot, but K.Lewis is supposed to start in the secondary due to Bmac’s injury. Should be exciting to see all the new players out there with the 1s instead of the 2s and 3s.
Things can always be worse....
Yes, this is being a tad overlooked isn't it
I should think Orton and Co. will attack his side with regularity to start the game, too. Thanks for reminding me of something else I need to watch for during the game (and when I invariably watch it 2-3 more times).

Good call swmt...
This should be a good test for Keenan, as he’ll be matched up against a few different types of receivers, but I am real interested to see him vs. Eddie Royal, who is really quick.

Shout out
Where do I collect my royalties?
FYI to newcomers, we do the ‘Ask a Steelers Fan’ every week at the upcoming opponents blog. If you all want to help us field some Qs with your insight that would be awesome. Plus its a fun way to talk some good, clean trash talk.
Thanks for the post NYSF4.
I heard some where that Dwyer was actually starting to take practice more serious. I cannot for the life of me find the quote. Arg!

BA vs. BB with regards to DD
Darn you BA, just shut it! Early prediction: BA retires or ends up coaching Tebow next year. Kugler becomes OC. The DD “package” can be reformulated next year by Kugler, he will know what to do with what he has. Safest thing for BB is to tell DD to run all day…

Is he qualified? I guess everyone has to start somewhere.

What's funny is...
I kind of disagreed with Ben more than Arians, although I found truths in each’s statement.

i tend to agree with ben
i cant remember seeing dixon scramble and not pick up the first down so id rather take that than a possibly errant throw like in baltimore last year. but its true he could also benefit from waiting another second to go through his reads more fully. he should be able to take the extra time and if he still needs to scramble he’ll be fine since hes so fast

I would take a QB with Dixon's physical tools 10 times out of 10...
But telling him to run if his first read (“your guy” as Ben said) is bad advice. To me, it’s advice like that that can slow a player like Dixon’s development. Running is what comes natural to Dixon, you don’t have to tell him to run. Read the field, when nothing is available, then run as a last resort. You run when no one is open, not just the main guy. And when you run, you should run looking to pass.
He has been successful running, but it can’t be his second option. WR/ TE/ HB/ Run… that’s the progression he should be making.

There is a good bonus to running if there are no options to pass:
No chance for an INT.

Apparently
Flozell Adams was playing back up TE Eugene Bright in connect four with the entire offensive line huddled over intently watching in the locker room yesterday. I wish I could have seen that
"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"
Do you know
which one had to say “… pretty sneaky, sis…”?
By the way
I heard Flozell lost because he could not block Bright from getting four in a row with his first four chips.

Tebow
If I am reading right – Tebow won’t be playing because of injury. Anyone know if this is right or has changed.

Don't expect to find out who the starter is before week 1
Tomlin said he will not say who the starter is before the game, to make it harder for ATL to prepare.
"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"
lol
you think he will send spies down to see who they are preparing for so he can throw the curve ball?
Steelers football is supposed to be 60 mins, recently it's been 45. The additional 15 are currently under construction.

Arians is the stupidest person on the planet.
He just wants to pass ALL DAY. He didn’t believe in running with RBs and now that we have a mobile QB he doesn’t want him running either. Dammit Arians just cause you can’t run with a football doesn’t mean you can’t let your players do it!. Dammit man, Whiz please come back!! We’ll get you another SB!
This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.

Lol
Okay, guilty. Still, I still side with BB, Dixon’s primary weapon is his feet right now. Arians should take advantage of that, however he shouldn’t overuse it. My point being, let DD use his feet and allow his passing skills to complement it. True, DD doesn’t look downfield but he can get the ball to WRs otherwise he would zero passing yards no? It really does feel like Arians hates running the ball, but i don’t know, jsut my opinion. I guess this Arians hate is coming from the millions of facepalm moments that we’ve had with him as OC. There, better?

Judgment is what makes a winning QB.
Ben holds the ball too long at times and DD might be inclined to run first and throw second. I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Arians, but I don’t think any QB can endure in the NFL primarily as a runner. I think Steve Young gave a great example of using both abilities wisely as a player.
I agree with you, but a QB has to temper his judgement with his physical abilities. Yes, Ben holds the ball too long, but since he’s as big as any linebacker, he can often afford to do so. And people forget that Michael Vick was a pretty successful running QB before the whole dog torture thing.
grain of salt
I don’t think there’s really a difference of opinion between Arians’ comments and Ben’s comments as far as what Dixon should do. Both said that Dixon should first look to pass, and if he can’t, then he should run. Certainly Ben’s comments seemed to show that he’s more ok with Dixon running than Arians seems to be, but there’s not really a huge difference of opinion there; it’s not as if Ben’s saying Dixon should run-first, pass-second and Arians is saying the opposite.
Big Ben's quote isn't really clear
Did he mean take off running if DD’s first read isn’t open? If so he’s got to be wrong. I agree with Arians to some extent, but not completely. You have to, as an NFL QB be able to look out for more than 1 WR. But with a guy who has legs like Dixon there’s got to be diminishing returns on repeated checkdowns. By the time he’s looking for his 3rd option he’s probably better off tucking and running. I think that’s certainly true of his dump off option. So a bit of balance there… Dixon is not a standard NFL QB. He may be able to make all the throws, and even read a defense buthe has weapons for legs he, and Arians would be a fool not to use when he’s in the game.
by KiwiSteelerFan on Aug 27, 2010 10:15 PM EDT reply actions
Hard to imagine
that BB would tell DD to run if his first option is not there when he looks through his reads and holds the ball forever.
Things can always be worse....
Different guys usually have different decisions.
It depends on the situation.
When to pass, or when to run,
the great one will do their best option. :)

Maybe......
Big Ben’s trying to get Dixon killed by encouraging him to run whenever he feels the need to……..? Eliminate the competition. Just kidding………..I think.
I want to see a SB 40 play this season...
- to Dixon at the sideline, Dixon deep to Mike Wallace….
But, Arians won’t run it because it doesn’t feature five tight ends…
Also, I’d say that, having grown up watching Steve Young, the greatest running QB of his era, running with the ball is mostly overrated. Throwing it through the air is usually the better bet, although Kiwi above made a good point about diminishing returns on checkdowns for Dixon.
"Football combines the two worst things about America: It is violence punctuated by committee meetings" -George Will
a running QB
makes it tempting for the db’s to come off the receiver
Granted it just takes a couple good runs for that to occur.
