Ask a Panthers' fan- Preseason game four

It's the Steelers and the Panthers in the final preseason game of 2010. Johnny_S was gracious enough to stop by Cat Scratch Reader (SB Nation's Carolina Panthers blog) to answer our community's questions about Thursday's game, so I thought it only fair to return the favor.

We've done this for the Ravens, Jets and Titans fanbases and it always seems like we get good discussions out of it. So fire away!

What does your WR depth outside of Steve Smith look like?

Also, how confident are you with Matt Moore this year? And is Clausen turning heads or just coming along nicely as a rookie?

"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"

- On the WRs: Lots of promise, nothing to show for it yet. The WRs across the board have been underwhelming. When Muhsin Muhammad retired it was up to Jarrett or one of the rookies to reach up and grab the spot, nobody has done so yet. It’s worrying to be sure. There is growing sentiment that we need to find a vet like Laverneus Coles to help out until Jarrett or LaFell prove they’re ready.

- On Moore: I’m confident, because there’s no reason not to be. Over his 4 starts last year he was 3-1 as a starter, and finished the season with a QB rating over 90 in games he started. If he doesn’t turn the ball over we can win football games.

- On Clausen: He’s turning heads to be sure. I think it’s safe to say that a lot of fans were dismayed by the pick and saw it as a vote of no confidence in a promising young player. Couple that with all the reports of Clausen’s locker room issues and problems with teammates and it didn’t look good. But, he’s been everything we could ask for and more out of a rookie. He’s remaining quiet, looks humble and doesn’t seem to think he’s owed anything. He’s been working with an atrocious backup OL and the 2nd and 3rd team WRs and looked good.

This game will really be the litmus test. If the guys look halfway competent then the Panthers wont spend the money on another WR… but if they look lackluster I see the possibility there.

This is the last chance for some of these guys… we’ll see how bad they want it.

How do you feel about Marty Herny (?) basically forfeiting this season? I think it comes from the owner, not wanting to spend before the CBA talks so it looks bad. You have a great running game, but no answer for the passing game, what are your expectations for Matt Moore? Will Jimmy have the starting role by the end of the season? This team had their first offensive touchdown in the preseason last week, no clear option for the #2 receiver and no one knows just how good the defense will be. Can you explain to me why this team took Armanti Edwards in the 3rd round? I know he was good at ASU but you could have gotten him in the 6th. One thing is for sure though Jon Beason is a beast.

- On Hurney: I don’t think that is the case at all. It doesn’t have anything to do with forfeiting and saving money because the Panthers ultimately paid more out to cut the guys we did than it would have been to keep them on the roster. It was about correcting past financial mistakes with no cap repercussion while preparing for 2011 and beyond. They Panthers didn’t spend money because we have extensions looming for DeAngelo Williams, Ryan Kalil, Thomas Davis, Richard Marshall and Matt Moore looming. As it stands it looks like we’ll have right around $70 million in cap space if a new CBA is worked out. 3rd cheapest roster in the league right now, and that means we have a good shot at keeping our talent.

- See above for Moore.

- Clausen: I don’t think he gets the job by the end of the season unless the wheels completely come off. I just don’t see it happening. Next year is another story entirely.

- The defense looks pretty good thus far. We’re hoping it keeps up, but they’ve dominated the three teams we’ve faced thus far (Ravens, Jets, Titans).

- Armanti Edwards: Our local beat writer reported (and was verified by the Indianapolis Star) that the Colts had planned to take Armanti Edwards 12 picks after where we ultimately traded up to get him. Edwards was the player it seemed every team had on their radar, but they were all playing chicken to see who would pull the trigger. There was no way he would have made it to the 6th round given Indy’s desire to take him. It remains to be seen whether he can live up to his draft position, but he is a huge upside prospect.

- Jarrett v. LaFell: Ultimately I think he does take him job, but he has to work on his hands to hit the next level. Jarrett can’t get separation, but he can catch… LaFell get’s separation but drops easy passes.

Losing Peppers was big, but seems like you found a nice replacement for him in Hardy.

What is the coaching staff saying about him? Are they high on him, or is it that he looks that good because he goes against the 2s and 3s of other teams?(He might have gone against some 1s, but I can’t remember at the moment)

Things can always be worse....

by ncmt40 on Aug 31, 2010 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

Extremely high on him. This was always going to be a ‘sack by committee’ scenario to fill Peppers’ void.

Nobody expected the entire cadre of DE’s to break out the way they did. Right now we have 5 different DEs who have had games with 2 sacks or over each. Greg Hardy is definitely the future at the position, but this season expect to see Everette Brown (2nd round pick from 2009) and Charles Johnson (3rd round pick from 2007) to be the impact players for most downs, with Hardy being a 3rd down pass rusher.

Is J Lehman still on your roster?

He was a beast at Illinois. If you still have him, how has he looked?

How does your cornerback depth shake out, does Captain Munnerlyn see the field this year?

Any chance you cut Mike Goodson? Always liked him.

What’s it like actually having a fullback?

I bet a fun thing would be to go way back in time to where there was going to be an eclipse and tell the cave men, "If I have come to destroy you, may the sun be blotted out from the sky." Just then the eclipse would start, and they'd probably try to kill you or something, but then you could explain about the rotation of the moon and all, and everyone would get a good laugh.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Aug 31, 2010 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

- Lehman is no longer on the roster. He’s in Minnesota now.
- Munnerlyn is cemented as our 3rd CB we used him a lot last year, and I expect the same.
- Goodson will stay on the roster too much upside to cut him now, he’s just raw.
- Brad Hoover was a darn good fullback, one of the most underrated in the league. That being said, Fiametta can catch out of the backfield in a way Hoover couldn’t, and that will help our passing game.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

Best player who will be cut or PS

Every year there are some special talents who aren’t quite ready to crack the 53 but seem like they are too good to lose. Who fits the bill for the Panthers this year?

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Aug 31, 2010 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

Great question

I think the Panthers will be trying to sneak QB Hunter Cantwell onto the practice squad this year. He’s raw, but he has a howitzer for an arm and just needs some maturation.

There are several good WRs that I think could get cut because of the draft commitments we made to the position. Kenny Moore, Oliver Young, Trent Guy… all three have a reasonable chance of being cut and all have their issues, but they are the kind of players who could be special in the right situation.

Rashawn Jackson at FB too. it seems unlikely the Panthers carry two into the season and he was far and away the best FB in the 2010 draft, just went undrafted due to the depth.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

Rashawn Jackson

well you should be able to PS him without the Steelers taking him. Our OC doesn’t believe in using a FB when a TE can be substituted.

Hang on, TE and FB are different positions?

I thought FB was just a was a TE lined up. Like SE or FL for a WR.

Our OC really doesn't like to use FBs

When he is forced to he will try to use a TE or a largish RB, unless it is 4th and 1. Then he will call an empty backfield.

Well, I think I've already discussed this with a few of you guys

but what is the situation with Richard Marshall and Thomas Davis?
Were they tendered or re-signed? If they were tendered, how happy are they?

I am particularly interested in Marshall because he is the best young CB in the league not named Revis IMO.

Marshall was tendered for one year for $1.759 million. Davis was tendered for one year for $3.268 million. Carolina isn’t really signing anyone long term until the new bargaining agreement is inked. I wouldn’t consider either one of them locks to be resigned after this year. Marshall may ask for too much money for his talent level, and Davis has injury concerns.

What would you say Marshall’s talent level is? I think he has potential to be a top 5 CB. That said, Top 5 CB money is getting ridiculous now, look at Nnamdi and Revis.

Gamble is much better than him.

I’ve seen Marshall blow too many coverages deep. He’s a good corner, and certainly starting quality at the pro level, but he’s not worth top 5 money. I’d love to have him back. He can make plays for sure, but they’re already overpaying Gamble. As good as Gamble is, he is making too much. I don’t want them overpaying another corner.

Oh, I didn't read the second question.

Marshall has been very unhappy about the situation. He held out for quite some time before signing his tender. He thinks he’s worth more than his $1.759 million. I haven’t heard anything about Davis being unhappy.

A question near to our hearts.

How do you think Delhomme does for the Browns this year? He’ll have a good line, that might be all though.

Also what positions do you have talented depth, where can we expect our back-ups to be tested?

Lastly, where do you see your team finishing this year?

by Phantaskippy on Sep 1, 2010 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

Delhomme will probably do fine.

He’s an average QB, and will put up average numbers. Getting a fresh start on another team will probably help him get back to his old self.

Right now, I’d say defensive end is the deepest position on the team. Carolina has the number one or two defense is virtually every category this preseason, and they’re a big reason why. Carolina is first in sacks. Charles Johnson, Everette Brown, Greg Hardy, and Eric Moore have all taken up residence in opposing backfields. Tyler Brayton, who won’t be playing until the regular season, had two sacks himself in one quarter before getting injured in the first game.

I think Carolina will be anywhere from 9-7 to 11-5. At this point, it really depends on how Matt Moore plays, or Clausen if he replaces Moore during the season. Moore hasn’t done as well this preseason as he did at the end of last year. They don’t have to have a good passing game to win. They’ve won in the past solely on their running game, and Carolina’s schedule is much softer than normal this year. However, to be a playoff team, they will need Moore to do well.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Sep 1, 2010 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Really 9-7 or 11-5?

That’s a fan!

The Black and Gold are going undefeated as well. The Pirates will win the rest of their games this season and only finish 5 games out of the wild card.

R.I.P. Mad Dog

by DwightWhite's Missing Tooth on Sep 2, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's unreasonable.

Carolina was 8-8 last year with Delhomme having a 50 something QB rating. Moore only played in 5 of the games. Plus, the schedule was one of the toughest in the league last year. This year, it’s one of the softest.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Delhomme will be in a west coast offense. Not requiring him to make any deep throws will definitely help him in Cleveland, he’s also used to having the tall possession receiver, and the smaller faster receiver in Smith and Muhsin Muhammad, so working with Mohammad Massaquoi and Josh Cribbs wont be entirely foreign, even if neither is as talented.

Defensive end looks to be the deepest position right now with four guys looking like starters right now.

Floor is 6-10 and the ceiling is 12-4. We have a favorable schedule on paper, but I’m always wary of relying on that. Basically if Matt Moore plays like he did at the end of last season, we have a WR or two step up, and the defense continues looking the way they do then there’s no good reason we can’t win the division. If these three areas all falter it’s going to be a long year.

Four defensive end starters? Naw, I think they have five legitimate guys there. Who do you leave off?

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Sep 2, 2010 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Eric Moore. He’s been great in the preseason and will get a roster spot, but he is no NFL starter.

Brayton, Hardy, Brown and Johnson could all start.

As for the record, I’ve been resolute that I think the Panthers will go 11-5, but if I’m going to be realistic with another fan base I always feel it prudent to give them a best case, worst case scenario… and right now the Panthers are on a knife edge where they could be very good, or fairly average.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Sep 2, 2010 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I dunno dude.

I don’t see any difference between Moore and Johnson. I think they’re the same defensive end. Both are big, explosive guys who can get in the backfield multiple ways, and are strong and fast enough to shut down runs.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Sep 2, 2010 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Charles Johnson is NFL tested against NFL starters. He has 10 sacks the last two seasons while he was a backup and led the Panthers in snap to sack ratio. He is arguably the Panthers best DE right now.

Eric Moore has 2 sacks in his 5 year NFL career. Granted he’s had an impressive preseason, but I don’t think he’s anywhere close to Johnson on skill level.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Sep 2, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know what his problem was on other teams.

All I can go by is what I’ve seen him do on this one. Backups or not, he has been completely dominate. He would’ve had two or three times as many sacks as he has if someone else hadn’t gotten to the QB a fraction of a second sooner. It’s not unheard of for a player to switch teams and do better. I really hope he gets his share of snaps this season, ’cause that would be one deep player rotation. None of the five would probably even be sweating by the end of the game.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Bleeding Black and Gold.....forever

by Michael Hewitt on Sep 1, 2010 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

Pass rush is looking insanely good right now. I’m definitely of the mindset that Julius Peppers is one of the most overrated players in the NFL (even when he was a Panther) but you don’t replace double digit sacks overnight.

As it stands the Panthers are 1st in the NFL in preseason right now with 18 total sacks. Of these 18 sacks 13 have come from our DEs (3 to Everette Brown, 3 to Greg Hardy, 3 to Eric Moore, 2 to Charles Johnson, 2 to Tyler Brayton). Everette Brown needed to come into camp bigger and stronger and he added 15 lbs of muscle to his frame and it’s making all the difference in the world.

Watch out for Greg Hardy as a backup too… it’s not just Panther fans who think he could be the steal of the draft as the 6th round DE out of ole Miss has posted 12 tackles and 3 sacks this preseason.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Sep 2, 2010 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Last year's big problem: Defensive Tackle

What have the Panthers done to address that from last season? Things got so bad you were picking up our Practice Squadders last year! ;)

Did Carolina even do anything in the offseason to address their problems there? I saw a couple of nice picks on Defensive Ends in the draft this year, I think you have a couple of potentials in Hardy and Norwood, though I would assume Norwood may end up at OLB? Maybe on the Strong side?

by KiwiSteelerFan on Sep 2, 2010 2:35 AM EDT reply actions

Defensive tackle was the area most fans thought the focus would be on during the draft, but the organization didn’t see the value at the position compared to others so they didn’t pick one.

Last year we had starting NT Maake Kemoeatu go down in camp so the team scrambled to trade for Louis Leonard of Cleveland, right now he looks to start at NT. We also traded with Kansas City for former 3rd round pick Tank Tyler who looked lost in a 3-4 system and figures to be in the mix. We brought in Ed Johnson formerly with Indianapolis who Ron Meeks coached when he worked under Tony Dungy and Johnson is making a case to start.

No household names that’s for sure… but they all seem to be stepping up right now.

Norwood will end up at OLB. In 2010 he may be a designated pass rusher, but barring injury we wont see him a lot. I actually think Norwood could be the future on the weak side, provided the team decide not to bring back Thomas Davis… but that’s a lot of speculation based on how he returns from his second torn ACL.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Sep 2, 2010 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Carolina is first in total preseason defense, and second in preseason rush defense.

The defensive tackles are playing fast and with a lot of heart. They’re shutting down the run game very well, holding to their gap assignments, and providing a push up the middle on passing downs. I’m as surprised as anyone. I hope it carries over to the regular season, though I don’t see them going from 2nd to mediocre over night. It’s looking like the defensive line is somehow the strength of the whole team.

The organization know his value, and Fox knows his value… but it seems unlikely the two sides will meet on a contract. We’re a small market team who are governed by a fiscally conservative owner. He won’t get caught up in a bidding war for John Fox, which very well could happen.

Of course there is a possibility Fox wont want to uproot his family, but I think it’s unlikely; less likely though are the wishes of the masses for us to bring in Bill Cowher.
