Harrison's "fumble" return
A friend posted this on my facebook... I think it's just more bologna from Florio, but apparently a lot of my friends thought Harrison deserved a fine. Thoughts??

Deserves a fine for what?
When Harrison picks up the ball he becomes the ball carrier. You don’t fine a running back for lowering his shoulders and running over a DB, do you? If you do not want to get hit, get the hell off the field. If you are stupid enough to try to tackle someone that much bigger than you with a full head of steam well then you probably need a good hit to knock that stupidity loose.

I agree
and I’ll add that I enjoyed the play

Orton tried to tackle someone who had the ball. So what’s the problem, other than he got the losing end of the deal? Why do you care what your friends think? What do you actually think?

I think that anyone who’s played football at any level should see that this is ridiculous. When someone runs their mouth off at you, you remember it and look for the next opportunity to knock the snot out of them. It’s just football. I don’t think that there was anything dirty about the play, or anything wrong with his comments.
I was purely surprised by the number of people who agreed with Florio on my Facebook thread. Just wanted to make sure that I’m not going insane here hahaha

Lots of people will agree with Florio because lots of people hate the Steelers, or they didn’t watch the game, or they do not understand football, etc.

Does Florio understand football?
Just wondering.

its comments like that
that makes me want to register on that website and verbally beat him down for his ignorance, this is football not two hand touch. like Johnny said, once Harrison gets the ball hes a running back and can lower the shoulder on who ever he wants, if Ortan was smart he would have simply pushed Harrison out of bounds, not try and go low on him no less, Ortan is fine idk what all the gripe is about
“He was running his mouth and getting in the way of the train,” Harrison said after the game, per Mike Klis of the Denver Post. "And the train wasn’t coming off the track. “He was popping off down there the first time they were about to score,” Harrison said. “So you run your mouth, expect to get something. Everything’s between the lines, so he got what he had coming.”
Ortan take a hint, dont pissoff the Silverback

no fine, not illegal....and not here to troll.
but I wonder how you guys will react (or perhaps have reacted) if the shoe is ever on the other foot. Perhaps an example…I would feel this situation is not too much different that Shanahans offensive line while he was in Denver…..the blocks were within the rules, but just barely and it could be argued that they were outside the spirit of the rules. In my opinion, that made them somewhat “cheap”….. same situation here, guys. I found myself defending the offensive tactics as legal, but not liking it. I’m just glad no injury came out of it, or Harrison’s hit would have been renamed spearing just so the comish could make a point with a fine…and we would be dead in the water water at QB.
put it this way
if Dixon tried to tackle someone as big as Harrison, Steelers fans would be pissed if he went low on him and put himself in harms way, especially giving circumstances for Pittsburgh’s QB problem, stupid move by any QB to lower the shoulder on someone especially near the sideline, simply just push him out

I’d actually be angry with the player who thought he’d get the better end of the deal when trying to tackle someone as large and strong as James Harrison. Especially when that person is very valuable to the organization, such as the QB.

If I was a Bronco fan
I’d be pissed off at Orton. If our star QB did that and got hurt, I’m blame him fro trying to tackle somebody he shouldn’t be around.
Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

Shoulder
it sure looked like his shoulder that hit Orton, not his head but idk if it is a penalty even if it is his head as he was the man with the ball.
It is preseason and Orton is too valuable to his team to be taking these risks in preseason. The coaches should have reamed him for being a bonehead. I guess they figure he probably learned it the hard way.

I agree it was not a clear spearing...
but with an injury, and with the pattern of fines for anything involving the QB in the last few years, I suspect (not know) that it would have been close enough to label it (retroactively) as spearing, just so that the commish could send his message. Fortunately,“no harm, no foul”, and best for all concerned.
As for the comments above stating that they would blame Orton……yeah, it was a “bonehead” thing to do. However, my point is that if the roles were reversed, I suspect you would have some feelings about the opposing player. Ben is a pretty big guy, and Dixon is a second string guy trying to make a play enhance his position on the team, so the setting would likely be different than Sunday’s. …Let’s say, as an approximation, that Mendenhall tried to make a tackle after an INT in a preseason game…but was the recipient of an overly aggressive hit by an established player (not fighting for a spot) that occured just as the play ended. It would be easy for an opposing fanbase to say that Mendenhall should have stayed out of trouble in a preseason game, and applaud their players hit as evidence of team toughness. However, I really believe that if it actually happened (especially if it resulted in an injury), that Steeler fans would have some strong feelings about the opposing player taking advantage of the situation….especially, as stated earlier, in a preseason game.
It’s a violent sport, but it is still a sport …(and the best fan sport out there). It is also a means to make a living for every player on that field. I really do not believe the players would approve of gratuitous violence which has no effect on the play except to raise the risk of injury. Since it is a preseason game, I am discounting the effect on the game…needless to say, in a regular season contest it is obviously an advantage to have the opposing QB sitting. By the act of Harrison lowering his shoulder.. (some are saying head, I don’t think so, and he is too smart to risk the penaly and fine)..and doing it at that particular time, Harrison’s hit could be viewed (by some) as gratuitous.. These guys put their body on the line every day…..they don’t need to raise the risk any more than it already is.
Having made my case as best I know how, I am going to not sign back in unless specificaly asked, though I will be returning just to follow the comments. You guys have been gracious, and I don’t want to be a bad guest. But let me make one last clarification… I am NOT indicting anybody as dirty, evil, etc. I am discussing the emotions of fans (and possibly players), and I hope by doing so that I can promote a more even response from both fanbases. Look at it this way…without my pre-emptive strike for my team, you may well have had a much more aggressive interaction with a Denver fan. (I know, some would relish that!.. :D) There certainly is the emotion in Denver for that to occur.
So, bye guys, and thanks for letting me have my say. Have a good season, and I think you will. BTW, I think a few of the comments made on threads on other posts are a little too pessimistic regarding the Steelers this year. My guess is that you won’t see a repeat of the problems that led to last year’s disappointment. The reasoning for that is fairly simplistic….your coach is pretty good, and so are the players… therefore I simply anticipate everybody learns from last year and corrects the problems. Thanks for the game and for the banter before…and I’m glad neither team had any significant injuries.
Remember what fanbase you're talking to...
it’s generally OUR team that has the “bounties” placed on their heads (Ravens ring a bell?) so we don’t have to think long and hard to imagine the roll-reversal you suggest. Hines Ward is an excellent example. He’s an aggressive, hard hitting receiver that blocks. WELL. Yet he’s the target of those who would like to do him harm.
I couldn’t believe it when I saw Orton chasing Harrison. Common sense: This is a very large, 1 year removed Defensive Player of the Year running full speed TOWARD the sideline and you’re going to what?? Try to tackle him?? Dear, sweet, egomaniac QB. What you lack in common sense you make up for in guts. (although his guts could have been laying on the field very easily.) That was a foolish move by Orton and I firmly believe his own ego came way before your Broncos in his mind. There is no way he was being a “team player” when he made that decision IMHO.
And you point DOES APPLY: It’s PRESEASON, Orton! Who gives a rip if Harrison scores a touchdown on that play! Did the effort really outweigh the risk??
I really enjoyed this past week reading intelligent, insightful comments from you Denver guys and the dialog between my BTSC junkies on both boards. We all have one thing in common: we don’t want so see people hurt…but we do love hard hitting football.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
I think he did
it cause he was talking junk. He didn’t want to back down from harrison. and got what was coming to him. I just wish it was a regular season game so the defense would have been out there the whole time.
Steelers football is supposed to be 60 mins, recently it's been 45. The additional 15 are currently under construction.

like Tann stated
both were mouthing off (why would you want to mouth off to someone like Harrison i have no idea why) Ortan should have know that any defensive player would be chomping at the bit to give a hit on the QB, especially a QB that was getting fresh with him. now you say if it was Mendenhall an established starter rather than Dixon, id still be pissed, we need Mendenhall for the season, and i mean it was RIGHT next to the sideline, simply push him out, no need to throw yourself in front of a train.
