Rashard Mendenhall - BTSC 2010 Community Projections
In years past, I've typically gotten to these posts earlier in the offseason, but with 10 days still remaining before the Pittsburgh Steelers kickoff their 2010 regular season schedule against the Atlanta Falcons at Heinz Field, let's get to it.
Obviously quarterback play is paramount to success in the National Football League, but with Ben Roethlisberger set to miss between four and six games to start the regular season, it's going to be a bit tougher to project his statistical output for 2010. His absence also means that the Steelers will need a bigtime season from third-year running back Rashard Mendenhall in order to hopefully get back to the postseason, and then possibly make a run at Lombardi Trophy number seven next January.
2009 Season Statistics
242 carries, 1,108 yards, 4.6 Yards/Carry, 7 TDs
Things To Consider Before Projecting Mendenhall's 2010 season:
-
No Big Ben - Frankly, this factor could be looked at in multiple ways. On the one hand, Roethlisberger's absence for at least the first quarter of the season could mean increased carries for Mendenhall. On the other hand, without Big Ben and what he brings to the table, opposing defenses may be able to key in on Mendenhall and the running game more aggressively.
-
Offensive Line Competency - It's very tough for quarterbacks to excel without a solid offensive line. It's even harder though for running backs to post outstanding numbers behind a mediocre offensive line. It's too early to say if this year's O-Line will be mediocre, but I think it's safe to assume that they aren't yet ready to be a top five unit. I have high hopes for new O-Line coach Sean Kugler and what he'll be able to do with the Steelers' big eaters up front in future years, but it takes time to implement a new philosophy and way of going about one's business.
- Red Zone Woes Remain? - The Steelers have looked pretty good in many facets this preseason. Red zone efficiency hasn't really been one of them. Part of that falls at the feet of offensive coordinator Bruce Arians; part of that may be attributed to the simple fact that teams don't want to show too much during the exhibition season. One has to also consider the possibility of someone other than Mendenhall seeing the lion's share of carries near or at the goal line. Might it be Isaac Redman who picks up 5 or so easy touchdowns that Mendenhall perhaps 'deserved' for his work earlier in the drive? Who knows? It's possible though.
There's other factors in play of course, namely, can he stay healthy over the course of the year if his workload does in fact increase significantly. But assuming he does remain unscathed for the better part of the season, here are my projections for Rashard Mendenhall's 2010 season.
310 carries, 1,295 yards, 4.2 YPC, 10 TDs

I'm hoping for between 1150 and 1300 yards...
Based on more reps, and a full season (it’s easy to forget he essentially missed the first three games last year, for all intensive purposes)… I’d be surprised (pleasantly at that) if he ended up with more.
I bet a fun thing would be to go way back in time to where there was going to be an eclipse and tell the cave men, "If I have come to destroy you, may the sun be blotted out from the sky." Just then the eclipse would start, and they'd probably try to kill you or something, but then you could explain about the rotation of the moon and all, and everyone would get a good laugh.
I hate to do it but its

I guess it's one of those things...
Like I “could care less”. You just hear it so many times, the actual saying changes in your head.

I just figured I'd help a brother out
There’s a couple that I really can’t stand and they just aren’t coming to me right now.

Appreciate it chewie...
Those things bug me too, I try and avoid the mistakes but sometimes I could care less. :)

Mendy will be a beast this year
Teams will certainly play aggressively to stop the run against us in the four (hopefully) games without Ben. Consequently, I see BA using this as an excuse to throw on nearly every play and Mendy averages 60 – 80 per game with no TDs.. So, by game 5, he is at 240 yards, no tds and maybe 60 carries. Then Ben comes back and defenses have to respect our passing game, which eases things up a bit. Also, as you point out, the o-line will need some time to adjust to Kugler and game 5 seems like the right time for the running game to explode. I think a safe assumption is 20 carries for 100 yards per game, and scores every other game. That puts Mendy, at a minimum, at 1440 yards on 300 carries, and 6 tds. That said, I think that is playing it too safe and I think our running game, even though other teams no its coming in the first 4 games, is going to surprise people. I think Mendy finishes with 1500 – 1800 yards, with 14 -16 tds, on about 350 carries. I initially voted for the 1000 – 1300 range above, but I’m changing my vote after thinking about. I like th o-line’s run-blocking ability. I also think Lefty, whom I believe will be the starter, will throw deep early and often to keep defenses honest. Finally, while I join my fellow BTSCers in loving Redman, Mendy is a complete back in terms of running, catching and blocking, so I think he will be effective in the redzone and hold off Redman.
I'm your huckleberry
1500+ yards seem to be a reasonable goal
That’s an average just shy of 94 yards per game. Now, if they plan to utilize him more in the pass game, I should expect that would reduce the number of carries per game. So, maybe 80 – 85 yards per game if they plan to throw at him 5-7 times a game. So, low end, I’d expect to see about 1,300 yards on the season with about 500 yards receiving (3 rec p/game 10 yd avg).

I like the idea of this post, but why not just give two options?
Either over or under. That way we have to make a decision, not just go with the middle ground.
Just a thought to make it more interesting.
fair enough
more on the way, i’ll try that next time.

1200, 500 receiving. That’s if he’s healthy, I have a weird Injury feel for Mendy this year, and that whole FB thing I think will end up being a gimmick with Redman that doesn’t work at all.
Arians will find a way to screw up the best backfield we’ve had since Bettis lost his lateral agility ten years ago.
where is the Redman poll option?

+ Redman!
He needs no numbers

I'm with Chewie
For the reasons given plus one more. From what I observed the other night, he seems to be able to find opportunities from what are otherwise broken plays. If that’s the case then the offensive line does not have to be great, they just have to be good enough to keep him from stopped constantly in the backfield and give him the time to find his own holes. Think Barry Sanders (and no I am not making a comparison). Right now I think with exception of right guard the OL has the potential to perform at least at that level given some time for them to develop some group cohesion.

I took the under
I think he has the talent, but don’t trust the line or his ability to go without injuries. I think he has ~900 yards, Moore and Redman another ~400.
I'm torn actually.
I think he can have 1300 rushing and 500 receiving, maybe more of each. What scares me is the fumble-itis and how much time he’ll spend on the sidelines after doing the ball-away-from-the-body routine. It’s gonna happen at least once, and with Coach T, that means back to learning his details.
under it is for me
He will break 1000 again, but I don’t think he goes over 1300. The line might have gotten better with Pouncey, but not good enough to truly make him join the elites with his number. Plus teams will most certainly stack the box without Ben. I think his YPC will hover right around 4.0, while he get’s between 1100 and 1200 yards. Not too shabby, yet still something to improve upon.
It is important to remember....
that yes, while Ben is out we plan (hopefully) on running the ball more. This would mean good things for Mendenhall….
but at the same time, no one is going to fear our QBs while Ben is out and will stack the box…so don’t expect league MVP like numbers…
I am concerned about fumbling
I think he is the next Bam Morris, big games with big fumbles
he may lose the ball more than he scores
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
287 carries, 1,265 yards (4.4 YPC), 9 TD's; 28 receptions, 275 yards, 1 TD; 5 fumbles
I really struggle here. He is only entering his second full year of playing time, and I think there is still a lot of upside for him. Plus, I think his workload will be increased during BB’s 3-game suspension. With decent run-blocking, I think he can spin his way to a few more TD’s from inside the 10. Those are the pros.
The cons? He could be spelled more by Redman (esp. at goal line and late in games as Redman can help “close it out”), and his workload will increase not only in the first 3 games, but all season long as he continues to show improvements over last year. Due to that fact, he has the potential for more nagging injuries as well as fumbles—perhaps keeping his numbers lower than those of elite RB’s. I definitely feel this year will reveal exactly what the Steelers have in Mendy.
