Steelers Defense Dominant Again, Suffocates Titans In 19-11 Victory
That was not a pretty football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tennessee Titans. If you like competent offense that is. If you're a fan of hard-hitting defensive football, than you loved what just unfolded in Nashville between the two AFC rivals.
Don't let the final score fool you - that game was never in doubt. Of course, a bothced special teams miscue allowed the Titans to miraculously get in position for one last miracle heave, but seriously, don't have nightmares of last season just yet. There was nothing close about that game thanks to one of the most opportunistic and swarming defensive performances I've seen from the Steelers' defense since Mike Tomlin took over as head coach back in 2007.
To some of the incredible defensive numbers on Sunday...
Interceptions: 3
Fumbles (Forced/Recovered): 7/4
Turnovers: 7!
Sacks: 4
Time of Possession: 26:20 - and they had the ball for the final 5 minutes of the game!
Rushing Attempts/Yards: 22 carries / 46 yards
3rd Down Efficiency: 4-of-14
3rd Down Conversions Before Lone TD Drive: 1!
Total Yards: 238
Total Yards In First 55 minutes: 126
Now, the offense of the Steelers was extremely ineffective. We'll get to that, but once Dennis Dixon left with a knee injury and Charlie Batch was inserted in the 2nd quarter, the Steelers' offense was extremely vanilla and limited, likely because the only other quarterback available if Batch were to get injured was Antwaan Randle El. So, if you're wondering why the Steelers didn't even look like they were trying to move the ball effectively with the passing game in the second half, it's probably because the coaching stafff didn't want to risk an injury to Batch.
And because the defense was playing so lights-out that it really didn't matter.

It's very real.
It’s called Pittsburgh Steeler’s Football.
Bungles Tank Stupidly like Clockwork
--------
Every night at the club the girls screamed when he'd come
He stood six foot five and weighed 241
Kinda meaty in the face with a head full of stone
And everybody knew you didn't go to the bathroom alone around Big Ben

Copt paste from other thread
It’s very lonely at the top of the AFC North
Eff Baltimore. Eff Cincinnnnnnnati. Cleveland, sorry you suck.
* Troy Polamalu is the only human being in the world that could tackle Isaac Redman.
* Lawrence Timmons, all your yards are belong to him.
* Chris Johnson who? Sorry, but Barry Sanders owns that record.
* I <3 Charlie Batch
* How do we keep winning with -3 healthy OL on our roster? Oh yeah, Maurkice Pouncey
* James Harrison will murder you. Not literally, like Ray Lewis, but figuratively on the football field.
* Jeff Reed is cooooooold aaaaaasss iiiice, ya know
"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"
Troy Polamalu is a clone of Isaac Redman with more volumized hair
This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.
Some things to note about the performance thru two games
1. The Steelers will have a top 1 defense in the NFL this year if they don’t have any major injuries
2. When Ben get’s back we will have a good offense
3. Bruce Arians understands that without Ben we have to run more
4. Dixon is an average QB
5. When Ben get’s back we are the team too beat in the NFL
6. We have 4 legitimate DPOY candidates
7. Our special teams is ten times better than last year
8. We can close out games in the 4th Qtr

great game
loved it. i love beating the titans! woot! woot!
our defense is unbelievable. timmons was AMAZING.
so good to pound them into submission and to see the steeler fans there waving their towels as a not-so-subtle reminder of the spirit of Cope.
so so so so good to hold CJ to 34 yards.
that.was.just.awesome.
...die trying

WHOOOOOO, Johnson who?
I almost felt bad for titans, then i remembered they disrespected the towel.
Timmons was everywhere. Harrison played angry which is the best way he plays. woodley keeps his streak and forced a turnover.
This is the steelers D of 08 back again!
special teams is looking good, im liking that Sylvestor!

He’s not a rookie.
He’s just not.
They obviously lied about that whole not having been a Pro-Bowl center in the NFL thing. Seriously, I call shenanigans on his rookie status.
Markice Pouncey is a 28 year old 3 time Pro-Bowler. I refuse to believe any more of these 20 yr old rookie stories, there’s just no way that’s the truth.

week 1 Worilds was everywhere on ST getting tackles and flying to the ball. This week it was Sylvester. Sylvester is far ahead of Worilds in normal defense but I think both are going to be really good picks.
Woodley, Harrison, Timmons. Quietly Farrior is playing great but the other three are just eating teams alive.
Seeing Harrison run through Tackles is amazing, seeing the athleticism of both him and Woodley, not to mention the freakish speed and strength of Timmons is just so entertaining. This defense is just flat out fun to watch.
As for Troy, I don’t think he’s lost a step, I just don’t think the play is getting to him as often. He’s still a Safety, Timmons Harrison and Woodley, not to mention Deisel Smith and Ziggster all get better position to make the plays. A Troy making fewer plays over the course of the season should result in more Troy come the end of the season (hope), that’s a very, very good thing.
Final thought on today’s game: Ben is worth two TD’s a game minimum over our current offense. We’re in first place with no offense at all. Cross your fingers, say your rosaries, offer sacrifices to Lord Xenu, whatever your style, pray for health, we’ve got a damn good shot this year.

In 1976, Terry Bradshaw was injured and the D put on the greatest show ever...
…Chuck Noll has Mike Kruczek as his QB and told him to hand the ball off and not do anything stupid.
The Immortal Steel Curtain pitched something like five shutouts in a row.
We are seeing exactly that sense of urgency from the New Steel Curtain. And with the patched up special teams, this Steeler team looks like they can stop anybody.
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

If I were the Saints I’d think that too. However I recall people being pretty confident the Steelers had no shot of holding CJ under 100 yards.
They are the defending champs though, they can believe what they want, we’ll have to prove them wrong.

i agree with you basic point that the steelers didnt wanna risk an injury to batch, but they did call a few deep pass plays that had batch eating dirt at the end of them. neither dixon or batch seemed very effective (minus dixon’s run).
whatever the cause, things obviously got worse by the injuries on the line.
Thanks again to English!

Good job guys.
I have to give you respect, your defense is beastly. I really didn’t think you could stop CJ, and without that holding call you wouldn’t have, but that doesn’t matter, you deserve the credit for stopping him. We beat ourselves today with 7 turnovers, and Jeff Fisher pulling Vince, but your defense and special teams was great today.

I can hardly believe the Steelers pulled this one out today. The first half was giving me all the feelings of a game similar to, say, the ‘94 AFCC game. Yeah, this defense is looking downright scary. It’s very rare that you are able to get so many takeaways where you don’t score TDs off of them and still win the game. In some ways, this also seems similar to the ‘04 team. It didn’t seem to matter who got hurt that year, we just found ways to pull out wins. Of course, that year’s D was not nearly as good as this year.

I think as we go forth...
We will see how big of an impact Timmons is to this defense. It looks like he is beginning to really meet his promise when drafted. With Timmons patrolling, and penetrating so effectively, It frees up man-beasts Harrison and Woodley to do what they do best…. Create havoc, and destroy the dreams of opposing QB’s This is a scary good defense right now, I have to imagine BB is giddy upon the prospect of coming back to a 3-1, or 4-0 team.

Sacks Stats
Can anyone explain me why NFL isn’t counting Troy Polamalu’s sack as a sack but a tackle? The commentators named it a sack, but stat sheets show it as a tackle.
because
On the -10 yard play, Collins fumbled the exchange from center nullifying the play as a pass play. #43 tackling him there turns into a negative rushing play. On the superman play where P flew over the top, that was also a designated running play because it was an obvious QB sneak. So even though Collins lost 1 yard, it was still not a sack. Sucks, b ut still dominance from No. 43.
