Carolina Panthers (1-2) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1) - Preseason Game No. 4: BTSC Open Thread (2nd Half)

The Pittsburgh Steelers lead the Carolina Panthers 13-0 at the half. Plenty to be pleased about in all three facets of the game. Not a perfect performance all the way around by any means, but as we'll discuss later, some nice outings from several guys that needed to show something.

One thing of note here though in case you're just checking in: Byron Leftwich left the game late in the 2nd quarter with an ankle injury. It's not yet clear how serious it may be, but on his first throw after being inserted, Dennis Dixon found Emmanuel Sanders for a TD strike that extended Pittsburgh's lead to 10-0. Jeff Reed tacked on his second field goal of the half with less than a minute to go for the half's final score.

Join us for the second half and postgame here on BTSC.

Oh yeah, Isaac Redman is still the most interesting man in the world. Great, hard running by him to end the half.

Butler is good enough a gunner someone would pick him up and stash him. I think we keep him on the roster.

As for Brown, I don’t think Logan has shown anything Brown hasn’t, and Brown has potential and WR ability on his side.

I’ll be surprised if Butler isn’t on the 53, Brown not as much, but he’s dang close even if he doesn’t. He could make it to the PS, I don’t think Butler would, to big, fast and he shows intelligence.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 2, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno, I just can’t imagine that anyone has kept that close of an eye on our team to know who is good or isn’t. I don’t think anyone would sign them to their 53 just to stash them.

I don’t think you remember 2002 then. 4 picks for 2 TD, 10 passes defended. He was forced to be a major part of our coverage and often was covering WR’s.

No, not on the outside, but he did quite a bit on slot guys. Our DB’s were playing like crap or hurt early in the season and with Bell in the middle Porter was forced to pretty much cover the nickel zone area and some man duties early in the season.

If I remember correctly his picks were all real early in the season before we got back to normal and he stopped having to cover so much.

I remember Hillgrove going off about how well he covered.

Posted this higher up the thread but probably got lost in the melee:

Cut Spaeth and Summers
Keep Miller, McHugh, D Johnson, Redman, Mendy, MeMo and Dwyer as your TEs and RBs.
Have McHugh or David Johnson cover FB as well as backup TE duties.

Dwyer might make the squad, but no way instead of MeMo

by Simonsen on Sep 2, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Only way they keep Summers and Dwyer over MeMo

is if they opt for a rebuilding year. Dwyer won’t do squat as a rookie but he’s got some potential. Probably enough that they’d struggle to keep him on the PS.

Roster Implications

Well, if Lefwich does go on IR, that gives the Steelers an additional roster spot…

are you serious.....

if that's true...

then he’ll be headed for IR and Dixon/Batch are our boys for the first 4 games. Looks like we’ll be running a lot. And if that’s the case I’d probably rather Batch starts the first couple of games at least but I wouldn’t mind seeing Dixon in the for Baltimore game. He handled them pretty well last year and would, IMO be a far better choice to deal with that pass rush.
