Bryon Leftwich Tears MCL In Steelers Preseason Finale

PITTSBURGH - SEPTEMBER 02: Byron Leftwich #4 of the Pittsburgh Steelers kneels in the huddle next to a trainer after injuring himself against the Carolina Panthers during the preseason game on September 2 2010 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

From the Twitter account of the agency that represents Byron Leftiwch:

Our thoughts and concerns are with PPS client Byron Leftwich who tore his MCL this evening. Bad luck for a classy guy.

Sad stuff for Leftwich. But that's life in the brutal NFL. We wish Leftwich a speedy recovery with the hope that he can potentially even return later in the 2010 season. But he'll be shelved for a few months at least I'd imagine.

More soon.

Bummer

I wonder if there is any chance Goodell will take this into consideration in reducing Ben’s suspension.

Doubt it

If anything, I think this injury hurts our chances of getting Ben back. Goodell won’t want to appear as though he is being lenient because of a situation that has nothing to do with Ben’s behavior.

I'm sure

Goodell loves us and just wants us to be happy. Look at all of the criminals in the league—actually arrested criminals—- who never got suspended at all.

Uh oh...

Well…..ummmmm…..

There were four, and now there are three. But one is done, and one doesn’t get to play for 6-4 games from now….so now there are two…. (my view is the suspension will be reduced to 3).

So, if I were running this team, I’d start Batch, with some DD flash and dash plays……but I’d plan to run that damn ball 65% of the time or more and hold down the fort until game 4 when BB gets back.

by Ragnar808 on Sep 2, 2010 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

This is Sad

Say what you want about Leftwich, he’s a classy guy with a good sense of humor. I hate to see it end like this for him.

Dixon is the starter guys… the reason they yanked Dixon was so he wouldn’t get hurt, and the reason they played Batch the rest of the way was to get him ready to be number 2. If Dixon stumbles out of the gate, they’ll go to Charlie.

But right now, IMHO, the starter is Dixon.

Coming from a guy who has torn his MCL

He’ll have fluid leakages, possible meniscus damage, and during rehab could well end up with scar tissue slowing his rehab. Each tear is different. Knees are so iffy when it comes to “expected” returns. If he wasnt mobile before, he will take longer than someone more mobile, because there isnt a strong “motor base” still there

Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t

Absolutely not convinced that Dixon can lead us for 6 games. I loved him as a change of pace QB who got 10 snaps a game; scared silly as a guy expected to command our whole playbook. He simply doesn’t. We’re counting on him to run his ass off and not get hurt… dicey.

Batch with Dixon packages sounds good here. If Batch struggles, go with Dixon. He’s better as a 2nd guy who comes in with something to prove.

Seriously awful news to hear for Byron

Say what you will about his style of play, but the dude has had to fight off injuries for a lot of his career. Looks like he can’t catch a break here, either…

I’m didn’t catch any of Tomlin’s statements so I’m not sure if he’s hinted one way or the other, but I couldn’t tell whether his decision to play Batch in the 2nd half of the game was a vote of no-confidence in Dixon or a depserate attempt to get our soon-to-be #2 QB some reps. Hopefully we’ll have some sort of decision soon.

I don’t think anyone can blame Tomlin for a crappy start now. Kinda takes some of the heat off of him. If he claims he was going to start Leftwich (popular theory), it’s tough to blame him for not getting Dixon and Batch a lot of starts with the firsts.

I’m going to remain shamelessly optimistic and believe this injury and injury report is a hoax engineered by the Steelers to keep Atlanta in the dark about who’s starting game 1. :-)

Well this sucks.

I wasn’t exactly bent on starting Lefty (I was, and am, in the Charlie camp), but I don’t think anybody wanted, or expected anything like this to happen. Gotta feel for Byron right now.

Even more than before, we’re going to need the running game to step up. Leftwich has a gunslinging, cannon arm, which is something neither Batch nor Dixon really has. For either of them to be effective, we’re going to really need a worthwhile running game.

Tomlin's fault

It is both the popular (blame the coaches!) and unpopular (Dixon is the best!) thing to say, but Leftwich shouldn’t have been in the game that long.

Freak injuries happen. Yea, I know it’s not tomlin’s fault. It’s part of the game.

Doesn’t change the fact that the proven, viable option as a starter in Ben’s absence is out injured after a play when he should have been on the sideline resting up so he can lead the team in week 1.

by syrsteelerfan on Sep 2, 2010 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

Batch may have been the best choice. Or even Dixon, based on how he played in the first 2 preseason games. But every sign from the coaching staff said they were going with Leftwich. Like it or not they had planned for that since spring. Then Leftwich’s 3rd-game get-in-rhythm snaps got handed to Dixon, and you end up with today.

Fair enough

My point, which I could explain better, is that I think it was a flawed decision to give Leftwich so few reps his 3rd game. Given what’s already transpired I understand where you’re coming from, but it seems to me like Tomlin looked at a tough situation and blinked.

I'm really not

Why give Dixon those reps? He’d shown little to that point. Why not stick with the plan? Leftwich starts (earned the role in the spring), Dixon is 2nd string but has his own package (earned the role in the spring). He blinked.

By the way, appreciate the willingness to go back and forth.

by syrsteelerfan on Sep 2, 2010 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

OH its ok

I dont mind the back and forth.

Dixon had shown enough to warrant that chance. You have to give players a chance, if a player is shinning you got to give him a shot. Plus its not exactly like lefty was lighting it up. Thats why because if Dixon excelled no one is questioning it. Hind sight is 20/20. But know you know what you have there is no guessing. Thats why. He didn’t blink, he did what any good coach does. Not being too proud to give a player a chance.

If you read everything you would see I wrote that injuries happen. I get that. It’s part of the game. I’ve been calling for Leftwich to have gotten 3rd game reps. He could have easily gotten injured then. I in absolutely no way disagree with you on that point. I admitted the title of my first post went too far in like the 2nd sentence of my first post.

The idea was probably to have Leftwich as the Week One starter. The second part of that plan is to have that QB and offense in rhythm so that come the 1st week, there are no or minimal loose ends being tied. Unfortunately, we have had little to no rhythm this preseason, so you cant blame the coach for putting him out there to try create a bit more optimism/confidence amongst his projected 1st string offense

I think this is now Dixons team. Hes played the most reps of any Quarterback this offseason. I think it was a combo of keeping Dixon out of trouble, and also checking Batch was fresh for backup duty

Stacking the Line

Right. It’s going to be really tough sledding for our RBs. They will be going all out against the run and trying to force us to throw.

Oy, this could get ugly.

That's not a bad thing

Maybe we should treat all four of these games like the Baltimore game last year. Lean very heavily on the run and use PA amply and unexpectedly.

At times last night the O-line looked pretty good, granted at times they looked bad.

I think they seemed to settle down some as the game progressed and made some nice holes for the RBs to run through. If they can do that, it will take a load off of whoever starts. The world is not over, the sky is not falling, we will be okay, we have…the most interesting RB in the world.

Nut up or Shut up time

Lefty should be IR’d so that whoever the 53rd man is wont be pushed out by some scrub QB who otherwise would have no business making our roster. Instead that player will simply take Lefty’s spot for four weeks. I do agree with worldtrip over the matter of public reaction to Tomlin’s QB plan. No matter what he does there will a party of armchair head coaches who would have done things differently. Now onto the matter of who should now start. I would not mind seeing Charlie Batch out there at all, but I’m not against seeing Dixon play either. My gut tells me it’ll be Dixon, but he’ll be kept on a short leash. It’s now up to the defense to return to ‘08 form, or somewhere in that neighborhood. Football is a game of adversity, something that the Steelers have thrived on in the past, and something they can certainly do again with the right mindset. Football season can’t get here soon enough.

Yup

Agree entirely. The main thing I am really worried about now is Bruce Bloody Arians going and trying to keep a Big Ben or Byron gameplan. Look at what you have with Dixon, play to his strengths. Thats rollouts, play action, draw plays, anything to take the heat off of him, and please call smart plays on 3rd/4th and 1. Tonight was pretty good for the most part.

You can do it Bruce, you can do it

That will at least keep defenses honest. It’s a killer to have to keep an extra defender on the QB in case he runs. Dixon certainly makes for more entertaining football that much is known. Oh and by the way welcome back man. I saw your post a couple of weeks ago explaining everything just never got around to commenting on it. Glad to see you doing better.

Which Dixon have you been watching this preseason?

Hes thrown 1 ugly INT on a rollout. Other than that id say his rolling out is his best game. He doesnt necessarily go through his reads on his rollouts well, but most of his runs have come from rollouts, when he chooses to play it safe.

That int was just a result of trying to do too much on a play in the redzone

I think that this is just an accident inside this kind of game. And a bless in disguise.

If We all suposse that We don´t expose BL. And this happends in the fifth play of the first game or the second after had lost the first or worst the third after losing both before it could be perhaps the Whole season. Most of Us had said before that “We are just waiting for something like this happend”, “He´s as movile as a statue”, “the risk is that all other´s teams D´s train with Him (as a dummie)” and so on, and this kind of injury is just part of the game and Tomlin was looking for some rythm. Of course I don’t want that all this issue be solved in this way. But this could be the a wake up call for Our D, and been playing for HoF Coach Dad, it could be a situation of the best taken from the worst for Us.

What if Roethlisberger Starts Week 1?

This probably won’t happen … total pie-in-the-sky dreaming … but what if Roethlisberger, Rooney and the Lawyers challenge Goodell’s power to suspend Ben based on innuendo and rumor?

I mean, Goodell is basically eliminating the Steelers from contention based on the admitted fact that Ben went into a bathroom with a girl, and then was written about in every tabloid (I’m not condoning his actions).

I just don’t understand it. If I were Ben, or the Steelers Franchise, I would be outraged that the NFL thinks it has this kind of power.

You want to fire someone for a failed drug test? Fine. You want to fire someone who goes to prison? Understandable. But this whole thing really doesn’t feel right to me (it never has) and I hope that Ben & Co. go into this meeting with aggression.

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on Sep 3, 2010 3:51 AM EDT reply actions

Ben isn't being suspended for his actions

He’s being suspended for the perception of his actions by the public at large. He’s a high profile player that made a very high profile mistake, regardless of whether or not he broke the law, and he and the league have received an extraordinary amount of bad press for it. Just because he didn’t get arrested, charged or fined doesn’t take away the negative publicity and loss of revenue he’s brought to the NFL with the whole ordeal.

In this past offseason, players have been arrested, accused of or charged with beating up a pregnant girlfriend (Phillip Merling), multiple DUIs (Vincent Jackson), a federal gun felony (Sean Rodgers), a drunken assault similar to past arrests (Cedric Benson), a regular old assault at a strip club (Vince Young), violating an established substance abuse policy and throwing a glass at a woman (Santonio Holmes) and a sexual assault case similar to Ben’s (Eric Foster). In every case, the player in question has received only a fraction of the publicity for their offenses that Ben has. It comes as no surprise to me, then, that all have received shorter suspensions (or none at all).

Is it fair? Probably not. But I don’t know that businesses often are, or should be for that matter.

Is it outrageous that Goodell isn’t establishing a sort of tiered punishment system based on the severity of the crime? I don’t think so. The conduct policy isn’t put in place to make NFL players better people, it’s in place to make the NFL a better, more marketable product. The NFL is a business selling a product, and I think if its commissioner wants to treat it as such, punishing people who negatively impact that product because of their high profile, so be it.

I think Ben is in the business now of rehabilitating his awful image, and I think going into a meeting with Goodell asking for a suspension to be lowered more than the previously agreed upon minimum is a PR nightmare. I hope he doesn’t go at all.

Leftwich injured....in other news, the sun rose yet again today

Why was anyone surprised that Leftwich got hurt? When was the last time he made it through an entire season without landing on injured reserve?
As for their next 4 week arm, here’s a few potential names: Brett Ratliff, Levi Brown, Kevin O"Connell, Colt Brennan, Matt Gutierrez, Dan LeFevour, Hunter Cantwell, Jevan Snead. Also, Sage Rosenfels might be trade bait, I don’t think he’ll get cut since there’s so many iffy backup spots around the league right now; he might even land back in Houston.

Camp Arms

If Leftwich is going to be gone more than 4-6 weeks, then put him on the IR, and sign a camp arm. Garcia is a bad choice, because he’s ancient and only efficient at throwing short passes. He sucked in Cleveland, because they asked him to throw downfield. If Leinhart hasn’t got it by now, he probably never will. I say we pick up someone’s roster fodder that still has a chance to learn and get better or bring in Brian St. Pierre or Mike Reilly, only because they have some familiarity with the team. As mentioned, Dan LeFevour, Colt Brennan, and Matt Gutierrez are all on the bubble and could be cut. Colt McCoy was on thin ice, but has probably done enough to stick with Cleveland. Tony Pike didn’t look awful for a practice squad guy. There’s a lot of young prospects that are going to be casualties that could be picked after the 53-man cut.

There’s a few guys who have been around the league that will probably NOT get cut that we could more than likely acquire cheap via trade, but are they really going to be able to learn the playbook and be ready to start in a little more than a week? Sage Rosenfels, Troy Smith, Chad Pennington, Jon Kitna, Rex Grossman, Chris Simms, Billy Volek would all be interesting backups to get us through a few games, but at this point, I don’t think they can help us immediately. So, to me, it’s not worth wasting a draft pick.

My guess is, they will work with what they have, and if Lefty is down for a while, just bring in a young guy to groom.
