Cuts just got tougher

The last preseason game just ended, and it only made the cuts to come tougher.

Charlie Batch just went from cut material to indispensable backup, based on Byron Leftwich's health. For the 2nd game in a row, Jonathan Dwyer showed what he can do when he's in shape.

The only bubble inside LB who played better than Stevenson Sylvester was Renaud Williams, who shed blocks and went after the ball carrier with focus and toughness instead of rookie wild-abandon. But that same eagerness drew Sylvester to play after play.

Patrick Bailey, a ST demon with 3 games of tape saying he can't cut it in the base D, played on the Panthers side of the line of scrimmage all night. Frank Summers needs to pump his legs instead of diving, but made key blocks to spring runners on offense and ST for 4 straight quarters.

Crezdon Butler? He slipped one young, doofus mistake in between a few quarters of athletic, hard-hitting ball. Which would leave Anthony Madison on the outside looking in, if it weren't for the improvement he's shown this preseason on D while keeping up his special teams play.

Hell, even Stefan Logan showed not only skills as a punt returner we all thought questionable, but more toughness and hard-hitting as a gunner than I thought possible.

Say what you want about Tomlin and his decisions this offseason, or Colbert and his late-round busts, they've stacked this team with depth from top to bottom and it showed through this game. I don't know if the high-level talent is there to be successful this season, but there are enough players on this 75-man roster to go 18 games -- or at least make for very, very tough cuts for the coaching staff.

QB

I couldn’t see us cutting any of the QBs before the injury. Lefty goes to IR, we pick up a rental arm for 4 games to sit on the bench and cut him when Ben returns. Batch doesn’t leave. That wasn’t tough.

RB, LB, OL, WR and DB are all going tough though. I can’t see Butler or the 4 rookie lbs making it to PS. They are all too good to lose. Ditto for Brown. Worthington should make it though. Dwyer would have made it in an instant two weeks ago. Now I am not so certain. The next set of cuts are going to be painful.

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

Yeah, the QB situation just got easier, although that doesn’t mean better. Lefty is on IR, Dixon and Batch are the roster QB’s until Ben comes back. There’s no reason to get another QB, though.

I mean let’s face it, with our running game, we’re screwed for 4 weeks with Dixon or Batch starting. In the improbable case where both get hurt over the course of 4 weeks, is an extra week or two of Jeff Garcia studying the playbook really going to help us much? Not much chance of it happening + not much benefit if it does = not very important. I’d rather pick up a waiver RB or OL or FS or keep an extra ST’er.

A lot of teams only use 2 QB to begin with. We can certainly do it for 4 weeks.

If we’re down to the 3rd QB, it’s not going to be pretty in any case. You can use ARE as the 3rd in a pinch. He actually knows the offense already so it’s not such a stretch.

I wish there was a way to keep Lefty and then trade him to someone for a draft pick once he’s better again. Someone’s going to lose their quarterback and want insurance. But, I can’t see how to make that happen. Alas.

Regarding IR, can we IR someone who’s only going to miss 4-6 weeks? Should we? (if Lefty still thinks of himself as starter material, he’s probably going to be ticked)

that's the big question to me.

Should the team IR Leftwich and stick with Batch or hold a Roster spot for Leftwich then cut Batch later.

I’d think you’d just stick with Charlie at this point.

You might even consider cutting Leftwich outright.

by Steely McSmash on Sep 3, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I lean towards cutting him.

We don’t really need him, he’s not going to start this year, and it’s best for him: he can be signed by another team and learn their playbook while he recovers.

LB's

I was impressed by Williams and Bailey. That was the most they’ve shown this preseason (or the last 2 years for Bailey). I don’t think that’s enough for either to make the team, but it certainly caught my attention.

I think Butler has the team made. That was a bizarre play – on the replay, I could see why he thought the ball was batted down. The WR kind of tucked it like a statue of liberty type play. Still bone-headed, but understandable.

Quick 53 (my first ever)

QB – Dixon, Batch, FA Sign (Ben, week 4) (3)
RB – Mendy, Redman, Moore, Dwyer (4)
WR – Ward, Wallace, ARE, Sanders, Battle, Brown (6)
TE – Miller, Spaeth, Johnson (3)
OL – Starks, Kemo, Pouncey, Essex, Flozell, JScott, Foster, Hills, Hartwig (9)

ILB – Farrior, Timmons, Foote, Fox, Sly (5)
OLB – Harrison, Woodley, Worilds, Gibson (4)
DL – Smith, Keisel, Hampton, Ziggy, Hoke, Eason (6)
CB – Ike, McFadden, Gay, Lewis, Burnett, Butler (6)
S – Polamalu, Clark, Allen, Mundy (4)

ST – Reed, Sepulveda, Warren (Stewart?) (3)

Offense – 25
Defense – 24
ST – 3

Last ones in: Brown, Gibson, Dwyer, Butler
Last ones out: Summers, Logan, Harris, Worthingon

Final Battles:
Logan vs. Brown: Brown is more versatile and a bigger, faster body on ST. Easy one here IMO.
Dwyer vs. Summers: This one could go either way. Summers does not have as much upside as Dwyer, but has the experience and better blocking.
Eason vs. Harris/Worthington: Eason is just better right now. Harris and Worthington are good projects, but Eason gives us the best option for production right now.
Butler/Gibson vs/ Last out: Gibson makes it on because he is a higher pick than Worthington and will be harder to hide. Butler makes it because he looks really really promising.

Urbik looked bad last night

I’d consider the Legursky add for Hartwig though. Not sure if the Steelers would do it though.

Summers probably will make it over Dwyer, but I don’t like it. I think Summers has a very average career ahead of him and Dwyer has potential to be good to very good.

This is very close to mine

Marginal differences:

- I think we’ll go 2 QB’s, assuming Ben’s gone for 4 games.
- The OL is so bad that we could argue for hours about things that really matter very little. Hartwig or Legurski, Foster or Urbik, who knows, does it matter? They’ll keep 9 and let’s hope we don’t see the backups much. Or the starting guards.
- I think Burnett might get cut for Madison. Our CB’s are deep enough that we don’t need 6, and Madison is still good on ST’s.
- Right on about Eason. He’s on the team, the others are PS’ers – I’m not convinced either could ever start on the defense. If they’re just long term backups, let’s put them on the PS until they’re in our top 6 DL’s.
- That gives me one more spot for Logan, Burnett, Summers, or an OL. Honestly, I’d probably pick up the best waived OL or RB I could find. Actually, we don’t need any more crappy OL’s, so let’s find a RB or FB, but not a RB/FB.

Then I believe he's mistaken

To be able to sign a player off waivers, they must be signed to the active roster. Same goes with signing players from other teams practice squads.

Also this

From http://www.ehow.com/facts_4793705_nfl-practice-squad-rules.html

      Size of a Practice Squad
   1. According to NFL Practice Squad rules, each team is allowed to keep up to eight players on their scout team at any given time. In addition, the National Football League may allow teams to keep a ninth player on the squad, provided they live outside of the United States.
      Practice Squad Players
   2. Any professional football player signed to a team’s practice squad can, as the name suggests, practice with the active roster members of that ball club. However, they cannot participate in an actual game unless they are signed to the active roster of a team.
      Salary of Scout Team Players
   3. The current salary of practice squad players, through 2010, is $5,200 per week. That amount will remain unchanged if 2011 is an uncapped year (that is, there is no salary cap), and will rise by $500 per week if there is a salary cap during that season. In 2012, the salary will be $5,700 per week.
      Signing Practice Squad Players
   4. Under the current NFL Practice Squad Rules, any player who is under contract on a scout team is free to sign a player contract with any team in the league, without compensation to the franchise whose practice squad he is a member of. However, the signing must be completed at least six days before the signing team’s next game (10 days in the case of a bye week).
      Practice Squad Eligibility
   5. According to league policy, only certain types of players are allowed to sign to the practice squad. Players cannot have played more than nine regular season games or been on the active roster for an entire year, nor can players be allowed to spend more than two seasons on the same team’s squad unless that team’s active roster never dips below 53 players.

I'm just surmising from what I've seen, but I think it works like this:

1) Players who don’t make the active roster get cut
2) Other teams get the opportunity to sign any cut players to their roster (dibs probably determined by record or something)
3) Players not on rosters who also meet specific service-time criteria are eligible to sign practice squad contracts. Both the player and team have to agree, so I believe players with multiple offers can choose, but usually the team that just cut them ends up with the players they want.
4) Practice Squad players are free agents with respect to offers to be added to a team’s 53 man roster.

We don’t have to have a #3. If our #3 is actually a WR who’s dressing anyways, we just won’t have one.

I'd rather have logan than a 3rd QB

even if he doesn’t return kicks, he’s a good gunner

I'd rather keep

Summers, Harris, or Worthington over a gunner

Worthington has amazing closing speed for a lineman

I’d rather keep him and Sunny than Logan and Summers. No B.S..

I think Redman can be the upback better than Summers can

No ‘most interesting runningback in the world’ jokes. Redman can make those blocking assignments better, and hold the point of attack longer.

I saw Summers attempt to throw blocks as the upback. It looked like he was diving onto a slip’n’slide.

but

Summers played through the whole game and is a fullback and knows all the f-back assignments , plus redmond might be memory challenge. I like him in the poney backfield because he is a much better runner. also ,maybe this is between d.johnson and frank the tank.

In a league (and division) that leans towards the pass...

More corners, less tweener fullbacks.

I bet a fun thing would be to go way back in time to where there was going to be an eclipse and tell the cave men, "If I have come to destroy you, may the sun be blotted out from the sky." Just then the eclipse would start, and they'd probably try to kill you or something, but then you could explain about the rotation of the moon and all, and everyone would get a good laugh.

yea

that makes more sense, david johnson and summers will battle it out.

This will be a tough year for cuts that is for sure.

Some of the ones that might not make the final 53 and go to the PS may not even last there for long. This is another one of those times I am glad I am not MT.

Things can always be worse....

Resign QB Tyler Palko to the practice squad; Open season with 2 QBs ...

And go with cuts from there. I wonder if they will IR Leiftwich. You can’t keep 4 QBs. Not on this team. I wonder why the team played LB Patrick Bailey so much last night when I believe LB Thaddeus Gibson is so much better, particularly in the base D. I’m a little nervous about that one. I believe Gibson and Worilds will both play special teams this year and be beasts in training behind Woodley and Deebo. Both should take a step fwd and really show what talents they are when they have learned the system. I don’t want the coaching staff to do anything stupid at the cutdown.

I feel a little bit better about our secondary going fwd because I think that C. Butler could eventually be the person to fill Ike’s spot. The guy is looking like he could have starter potential and is also looking like somone who could be a playmaker. I think Keenan Lewis is too worried about getting beat deep and just needs to play his game. I think the coaches just have to give him safety help over the top since he doesn’t think he has the speed to run with all NFL receivers.

I think Joe Burnett might have played his last game with the Steelers. Has Dwyer done enough to stick over Tank? I think you can cut Summers and still put him on the practice squad. There are too many teams hurting for running backs who I think would probably pick up Dwyer.

Palko is 2nd or 3rd QB on the Chiefs

Burnett is expendable.

Denver will snap Dwyer up faster than they did Tebow, were he to be waived.

Summers is not the Tank until he can prove he is one. So far, he hasn’t. Practice squad for Summers.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I think every single one of our draft picks from this year will make the 53. Except for that Scott guy, but he’s on IR (?).

Scott is on the PUP, which is sort of like the 60 day disabled list in baseball. It’s like IR, but he has to start the season there, then after a bunch of weeks (6-10 maybe?) he can start practicing, then he can either get a roster spot or go on IR.

PUP-pies don't count against the 53, right?

Maybe that’s where Lefty will end up…

Butler

Aside from him not playing through until he knew the ball was out, on that one play, I liked what he displayed last night. He shows a lot of potential to be a play-maker.

I really like what I've seen from Crezdon

As soon as we drafted him, I did some research. After that, I couldn’t believe he fell so far in the draft.

This kid is going to be our future #1 corner after Ike leaves. Take it to the bank.
