In light of the injury to Dixon, and in response to a comment I saw on another post, I thought I'd do some quick research to find out if there are any QBs on another team's PS that we should think about signing. I asume that we don't want to sign a FA off the street because, presumabely, if they were any good, they would be employed. I found a site that provides the PS roster for each NFL team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_NFL_team_rosters). I'm only listing the teams that actually have a QB on their PS. Here is the list after the jump:
Saints: Sean Canfield
49ers: Nate Davis
I realize Dixon may be fine, Batch is still healthy, and early reports indicate Lefty may return this week. So, option 1 for the FO may simply be to try to hang in there and do nothing (with our D, who could blame if them?) Our second option could be to sign a player off another team's PS. As a 3rd option, we could always trade for another's back-up, but I don't see us going that route and that is probably best addressed in another post. Out of the QBs listed above, I like Bomar the best. He has a strong enough arm, looked solid in the pre-season, and has little chance of playing with Eli and Rosenfelds in front of him, so he should be inclined to sign with us. Cantwell from the Ratbitds could work for 2 reasons: 1) I think he may turn into a reliable back-up; and 2) it is always nice to steal a potentially good player from a rival. Ratliff also had a big arm and I seem to remember him playing well in the pre-season with the Jets a couple of years ago. What do you guys think? In any event, at least we have our D to rely upon!
Go Steelers!
