Steelers Cut 10 (ROSTER OPEN THREAD)

It's that time of year. We should be hearing a lot of rumors and news over the next 24 hours -- just one more way social media is changing the NFL -- so I thought I'd start a thread where we can share what we're hearing.

Chime in with any news about who will and won't be suiting up in black and gold this season!

UPDATE: Not a rumor -- Steelers.com announces the first set of cuts:

TE Eugene Bright, OG Dorian Brooks, OT Kyle Jolly, WR Brandon London, TE Sean McHugh, DT Scott Paxson, LS Matt Stewart, S Justin Thornton, RB Justin Vincent, LB Renauld Williams.

Bright, Brooks, Paxson and Thornton seem likely practice squad candidates. I'm a bit surprised by Williams as the rumor was Tomlin loved him. The rest make sense.

UPDATE 2: Urbik gone too, says his agent. 10 more to go.

NOTE: Please check out the frontpage post on roster cuts and continue the conversation there! -- Syrsteeler

Is it by the end of the weekend, or by the end of today?

Not totally related

But the PG just announced that Leftwich could be out 2 to 4 weeks. What do we do now? Keep him in the hope he can come back? That would mean one less roster spot for a guy who may never see the field when all is said and done. Tough decision.

PUP

Then either IR him or cut batch when he’s back. Buy some time, don’t use up the spot

by syrsteelerfan on Sep 3, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree

Make an injury settlement and let him walk. He will still be around if an emergency arises, although he may say FO. Roster spot very valuable this year with the RB, CB and LB positions.

Smart thing to do...

carry 3 QBs including Lefty into the season. Batch + Dixon + ARE as an emergency QB should be enough to get us through the 2 to 4 weeks til Lefty is healthy. If it’s just 2 weeks he’s missing he’s probably our starter at that point. Big Ben’s back after 4 weeks. We can look at whether we cut Batch or Leftwich at that point to be able to activate Big Ben. We have a roster exemption for him so we might as well use it.

by KiwiSteelerFan on Sep 3, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Ben would still count towards the roster though wont he?

So that means you want us carrying 4 QBs into the season? Stuff that. I think we will have an injury settlement with Lefty and allow him to walk.

by Michael Hewitt on Sep 3, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

No

Ben won’t count towards the 53, until after his suspension is over. I imagine we will have 53, and will have to cut someone then.

To try and then fail, is not unacceptable. But failing to try, is accepting failure.

Tomlin liked Williams but he likes all our LBs, the Williams cut happened because our LB depth is amazing.

Brooks too

I though he would be released as close to the limit as possible to be resigned on the PS. He looked like this year’s UDFA interior lineman hit. Hopefully he clears waivers. I wasn’t that impressed with Williams from his preseason play, and there’s no way he gets over Stevie Sly for the last LB spot, right?

Tough choices

I think Gibson, Butler, Burnett, Summers, Gay, and madison are on the bubble. I like Butler and Madison for Special Teams. Mundy is gone if Butler stays because he can play FS. I think we should start redman at FB. we have alot of depth at RB, WR, & LB. These positions are going to have contributors without alot of dropoff. Also, I think Dixon can get it done with his ability to keep the D concerned about his legs.

I think he's faster than Redman

I honestly don’t think he got much of a chance. Arians loved Redman (he’s friend with Redman’s uncle) and gave him most of the short yardage carries. Can’t really complain considering Redman has turned out to be a find, but I think he was moved to FB too quickly.

looks more and more like Dywer is a lock for the roster

Denver lost White and the Browns lost Hardesty for the season. So the Broncos are already thin at RB and Dwyer ran all over him, so for sure they would try to claim him off waivers. The Browns just lost their rookie RB for the year…..I’m sure they would take Dwyer.

Dwyer is now on the roster or in another uniform, no other option.

So I hit the link with the Twitter notes up top...

And I see a headline that says that more than the 10 announced were let go. In today’s age with the social media, etc., just by reading the above comments tells you that 10 plus Summers and Urbik are now gone. What is the purpose in keeping the other 11 names from the public? There are no more secrets obviously, so I’m not sure I get it.

Maybe not all the cut players, Hartwig seeking a trade is a different situation, but what kind of competitive advantage can there possibly be in not announcing the names?

I don't doubt that, and these last two games and the injuries should be making it tougher.

I guess I didn’t make my point clear enough. I’m talking about the guys already released beyond the 10 named. Where is the benefit in not announcing Summers, Urbik and whomever else (if the players have already been told that is)?

I understand that some players may not know, and I that I get. It’s the ones told but not announced that I’m not understanding the reason behind not saying anything.

In the “old” days, there could be some roster manipulation going on, not saying it because you know team x needs this position which we’re cutting. But nothing is secret in today’s electronic world so where’s the rationale?

Not a whole lot

The pre-requisite BBQ on Mon.

The future wife has set up a frickin’ “Cosmic Bowling” outing with one of her highschool girlfriends and her husband, with another couple or two mixed in tomorrow night. I frickin’ HATE bowling…

Not sure about Sunday. I don’t think anything but preping for the Q on Monday.

You? When are you gonna come down here and hang with the Steeler fan club in Portland?

oooh

Didn’t know you were in PDX. I’m there from time to time to get away from Seattle and party. I’ll let you know next time.

Heading to Wichita KS where my gf’s family lives for the weekend. Surprisingly somewhat fun town.

I'm actually in Vantucky

But I’m literally 5 minutes across the bridge from p-town.

Are you on yahoo? If so, add me. You know my E-mail.

Kansas, eh? Don’t eat any meat that you don’t know exactly what animal it came from…
