Pittsburgh Steelers Roster Cuts

By 6 pm eastern time on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers must trim their roster all the way down to 53 men. As of Friday evening, the Steelers are well on thier way towards reaching the benchmark, as the six-time Super Bowl champs cut ten players early on in the day on Friday. Those players were:

TE Eugene Bright, OG Dorian Brooks, OT Kyle Jolly, WR Brandon London, TE Sean McHugh, DT Scott Paxson, LS Matt Stewart, S Justin Thornton, RB Justin Vincent, LB Renauld Williams.

Later in the day, the team also reportedly cut Kraig Urbik according to his agent. Finally, although this one too has yet to be officially confirmed, running back Frank Summers was reportedly released. If both are in fact true, the Steelers must cut just nine more to reach 53.

Stay tuned for more as updates become available.

Re: Frank Summers

According to the InsidePGHsports Twitter Page Frank Summers blames none other than Bruce Arians for him being cut, and says that he will land on his feet. No link though. There are however other links to reports of Summers being cut

invite Frank the Tank

for shits and giggles

(feel bad for him, it is Arians fault)

by shleeve on Sep 3, 2010 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

BS

Is it BA’s fault that Frank looked like he was diving onto a slip’n’slide the few times I saw him try to make a block as the upback?

It’s nobodies fault but his own. He knew the Steelers drafted a stud RB this year, who only fell from a 2nd or 3rd round prospect because of a shifty drug test. He should have stepped up his game, and he didn’t. Or, if he did, not enough.

It's BA's fault that Tank is playing FB

…which he had never played before coming to the Steelers.

Yea, he’s a 5th round pick with a great nickname. In reality, it’s no great loss. But I can’t help feeling like the guy never got a chance to be a running back because Arians never gave him that chance. Summers never complained, and that’s a good thing.

He was a poor fullback. He could have been above average if he learned to run through blocks instead of diving, as you said. But he had speed and power and could have been a good tailback, and never got that chance.

I’m not too upset by his cut… I just feel like we didn’t get hte most out of his talent or give him an opportunity, and i feel bad for the guy. But I like Dwyer, so i totally get the decision.

by syrsteelerfan on Sep 3, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

its Arians fault

that he played Frank as a FB which doesn’t exist in our offense….

So essentially Summer didn’t exist. BA erased Summers from this world. So yes, it is his fault.

by shleeve on Sep 3, 2010 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

Arians put a UDFA (Redman), who was the nephew of a close friend, in front of the team’s 5th round pick for short yardage carries at the beginning of the 2009 camp. He put Tank in at FB only, a position Arians doesn’t value (“there are RB’s who play FB, TE’s who play FB, but there’s no FB in this offense”), and a position that Tank had never played.

Like i said above and in the other thread, he deserved to be cut based on his performance as FB and the Redman experiment obviously worked out well, but I think we didn’t get as much as we could have out of a 5th round RB.

by syrsteelerfan on Sep 3, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

You may be right about that.

Summers is listed as 5’10", 240. Not a great size for a FB.

Now, 5’10" and 260-275…Now we’re talkin’ about moving the pile and knocking NT’s on their collective asses.

IIRC, he did get some looks as the tailback, but not a lot, and didn’t really impress me very much.

He got a few...

But as I mentioned above, was basically moved to FB and asked to concentrate on that in his first camp.

Based on Redman’s development and the fact that Arians doesn’t care about a fullback, i’d say that everything turned out ok.

Cutting him was the right decision. Just feeling wistful that it could have turned out differently.

by syrsteelerfan on Sep 3, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

But, he still made the active squad

and played in a couple games last year before injuring his back. Redman didn’t.

Tim Lester was 5’10" and 233. He was a dominant FB. Kreider was 250. It isn’t weight as much as build and technique.

Summers isn’t built like a FB, and doesn’t play like one. We’ll see what happens with Frank, but Redman ran better than him, and Redman is slow. Tank isn’t going to cut it as a runner, as a FB he’ll have a better chance elsewhere than with no FB Arians.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 4, 2010 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Mack Strong was/is 6', 253

Lorenzo Neal was/is 5’ 11", 255.

Body composition and natural ability will make up for weight, but being a mountain of a man helps too.

I think Frank could make it as a goal line/short yardage back somewhere.

I’m gonna disagree, Summers doesn’t have the ability to make a roster as a runner in the NFL. He’ll make it as a FB or not at all.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 4, 2010 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Sad Day

The Steelers should cut Arians not Summers. Summers was developing into the the fullback they need. I cannot believe that they are cutting the only real fullback they have. Short yardage problems will continue. I cannot believe that Art Rooney is allowing this….This move insures nothing better than a 9-7 record and not making the playoffs. It is as stupid as cutting Redman last year.
That move kept them out of the playoffs last year.

by padave on Sep 4, 2010 7:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd say that

special teams and the defense folding in the 4th quarter had more to do with keeping them out of the playoffs last year.

Summers didn’t block till the whistle. He wouldn’t hustle and keep moving to open up the running lanes. We are probably better off with Legursky for short yardage (that is if BA doesn’t forget that he is alive.)

I also think that the year on the PS did Redman a lot of good. His blocking was awful last year.

A good theory that’s entirely dependent on Hartwig wanting to be a good mentor. Don’t know that’s true. Also, a lot of $ for a mentor who isn’t a multiple-position backup.

Um, Denver actually had some viable running backs last year too.

They lost Doom, both of their premier RBs, AND their potential short yardage back.

There’s no way Neckbeard can win games strictly chucking the ball. The only one who can do that is Pey-Pey.

Denver is going to go 5-11, or 6-10 unless they sign some unknown RB that turns out to be the second coming of Barry Sanders.

Don't understand the hate

Summers needs to stay on his feet while blocking. Totally true. It’s very annoying. But Tank Summers is by all accounts a championship-caliber individual, and I don’t think he ever got a chance with this team: Arians forced him to be a fullback instead of the running back he is (he’s faster than Redman!), and then cut him because he wasn’t a good enough fullback and because there’s no fullback in his offense anyway. Seems silly.

I would seriously take a RB that has quick feet

over a cut/slash runner any day of the year.

Redman has quick feet, and he has the vision to know when to spin, and when to grind for yards. I don’t think Frank has that.

- by biggcat on Sep 3, 2010 4:45 AM PDT

by Steel Spike on Sep 3, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I see Redman as a powerful back with great leg drive and will

I don’t think vision is his strong suit, he tends to look for the cut-back even when a hole is open, and I don’t think he has the burst, agility, or top-end speed of many backs.

But that’s how he ended up a UDFA. He ended up a Steeler because the scouts realized that doesn’t matter as much when Redman is capable of plowing through guys.

He’s a great power complement back. Don’t know if Summers would have been better because he got the chance. I think he’s faster and quicker than Redman… but again, we don’t know, so you’re probably right. I just wish we’d given him more time as a tailback and drafted a real fullback.

He already is a hell of a back

He ground out a 4.6 ypc avg, and over 1,100 yards behind the worst Steelers o-line of all time. With a real center to pave the way for him, he should EASILY crack 1,400-1,600 yards this season.

I have to agree

I’m looking for a HUGE season from Mendenhall. Redman may get his share (maybe even the bigger share) of the redzone carries, but Rashard will move the chains alot, and score alot. I think Pouncey will add alot to the rungame. This was the first time in a while that the Steelers drafted the guy I wanted in round one. I’m so excited to see the progression of the next dominant Steeler center. I’m thinking we’ll be seeing alot of that good old power Steeler running game this year.

i hate the way he blocks. I know it’s not his normal position, but the way he blocks is ridiculous. He looks like a teenage boy seeing boobs for the first time, he gets all amped up and dives right in. No technique. If he’s going to have a career in the NFL he needs to learn to block.

I agree he didn’t get much of a chance, but when he did get a chance he didn’t show much.

That sounds right

But there was a lot less DB talent and Kirschke was inactive.

After Smith got hurt, they re-signed Harris and he was inactive.

I have to think that numbers aside, both Burnett and Lewis > Harris after this preseaons.

6 or 7

Last year Hood was basically redshirted at the beginning of the season.

If Eason is one of the top 6, I’d agree with 7 to get some youth, otherwise 6 guys is proabably fine.

Last year they went into several games with only 5 DL gameday active.

I would say Burnett

He looks kinda lost out there right now. He could do with another year on the pants squad, imo.

I think we should keep hold of DCS

Allen really provides very little, nothing on ST and no upside as a starter if Clark gets injured. I am happier with Mundy starting than Allen so I let DCS have the spot.

Keep in mind that I have a man crush on DCS as big as MaLoR’s on Big Ben. In reality we will likely keep Allen and let DCS hit the PS.

What?

Allen is a former special teams captain and will be here again. He’s had multiple tackles this season. He could replace Clark, and is faster than Mundy and can play both positions.

I like DCS, but like I said if I were going to go out on a limb i’d cut Mundy to keep him, not allen.

Isn't Allen fairly old?

I didn’t think he played special teams? What I saw this preseason anyway.

I wanted to do the DCS thing because of a youth movement on D, but I think he would stay on the PS this year in truth.

Allen isn't a rook but he ain't old

He just turned 28. Right in his prime. And he’s a special teams demon, quite the opposite. Not the ten-year answer by any means but the exact type of guy we need in the next 2-4.

Mundy, on the other hand, may simply be a step too slow

With some good hits. He fits our style of FS, and I feel comfortable with him out there instead of Clark if he gets injured. He plays like Clark, just not as smart

Special Teams remains a weakness..

…so I would try to find a way to keep Anthony Madison and Patrick Bailey. Battle, too, was signed for his ST coverage skill. These three have shown more than any of the rookies during the preseason games.

I would enter the regular season with two (2) QB’s, cutting Lefty to make room for Battle. It does not make sense for Ben and Lefty to return to the team at approximately the same time.

Harris hasn’t shown much, so I would enter the season with six (6) DL’s and add Bailey making ten (10) LB’s. If you don’t like ten (10) LB’s, then one of the rookies would have to be cut, a tough choice.

Then, I would cut either Burnett or Mundy, neither of whom has impressed during the preseason, to make room for Madison.

When Ben comes back, someone else will have to be cut, assuming none of the 53 goes on IR during the first four weeks. Here is where I would cut Burnett or Mundy, whichever one had made the original 53-man roster.

So essentially I’m going with six (6) DL’s, ten (10) LB’s and nine (9) DB’s, and keeping Madison, Bailey and Battle.

The sad part is

Our offense is severely inadequate in one and only one area. Bruce Frickin Arians. I’ve said it before and I will repeat as needed. Our success on offense is a direct result of the talent we have, not the plays that are called. It is sad to me that while we have arguably the most talented offense, personnel wise (for the last few seasons), I have seen in my 31 years of being an avid Steeler fan, it is wasted on the ridiculous mediocrity of Bruce Arians. I wish…. I wish…. I wish I had a wish.

by Damnscot on Sep 4, 2010 12:51 AM EDT reply actions

Our offense is deficient in a number of areas. Off. Coord. is probably the second problem behind the O-Line. We haven’t spent nearly enough draft picks on the offensive side of the ball in the last few years for the offense to be strong all around. IMHO Ben carries the entire offense … except for Hines.

by PaulMorel on Sep 4, 2010 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions

OK

I still rank OC above OL purely because a good OC would play to the strengths and weaknesses of that OL. Bruce is incapable.

I believe we have a solid receiving, rushing, tight end and quarterback core. The front line will tool along as well as it has the last three seasons. A good OC could carry this offense.

Kicking a dead horse, I know.

TE (3)

WR (6)
Wards, Wallace, Sanders, Brown, Grisham, Battle
DL (7)
Hampton, Smith, Keisel, Hood, Eason, Worthington
LB (9)
Woodley, Farrior, Timmons, Harrison, Gibson, Fox, Foote, Sylvester, Worilds
DB (9)
Taylor, McFadden, Polamalu, Clark, Butler, Lewis, Gay, Allen, Cromartie-Smith
ST (3)
Warren, Reed, Sepulveda

Emergency QB (1)
Isaac Redman

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 1:14 AM EDT reply actions

so what won't happen?

If you mean cutting ARE for Grisham, you’re right. Mundy for Cromartie-Smith, you’re probably wrong. Cutting Burnett is a definite possibility. I’d give yourself some credit… put ARE back in and I wouldn’t be shocked at this.

by syrsteelerfan on Sep 4, 2010 1:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Meant cutting ARE for Grisham wont happen

primarily. No way that happens. ARE is the only receiver we have with more than one year of experience in our system besides Ward. Also, hes our emergency QB if Batch and Dixon go down to injury in the next cpl weeks behind our shakey line. With Brown and Sanders we have two more El type receivers. If Grisham were over 6’ tall i’d keep him over ARE despite the inexperience in our receiving corps i guess is what i’m saying, but he’s not lmao… so Grisham to practice squad. In all likelihood he’ll be joining Worthington and DC-S there…

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 2:34 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

If left is gone when Ben gets back

Then cut him now and give him an injury settlement. He wont be ready to play until week 4 or 5 anyway. Save the roster spot. Let him rehab. If you need him, resign him. If somebody else needs him, good luck, thanks for the memories.

Hartwirg wasn’t anygood.

Move Foster to RG

Can Urbik go on PS? He did not dress in many games last year.

by Steeler Nation VA on Sep 4, 2010 8:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed on Lefty,

In that case Worthington stays for sure and Madison gets Lefty’s spot.

Agreed, Hartwig sucked, tho better than Mahan.
On ‘my line’, Essux is a backup to Chris K and Foster is LG until Colon returns next year.

And ya Im pretty sure Urbik can be practise squadded. Thats where i have him, hopefully no one scoops him up. As others have said, he looked improved and better than Legs at guard.

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 11:06 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I liked Tank and Hartwig

In preseason, Tank looked like a pretty decent FB. With Tank on the team, I thought that Arians might add some new plays to his playbook. Wishful thinking I guess.

Hartwig was our best backup OL. He wasn’t good enough to play center in the AFC North … but he was our best lineman off the bench. I am sad to see him go. As others have pointed out, that probably came down to money.

I say Burnett needs one more year on the PS

He showed a couple of flashes, but not enough to keep him on the 53 this year. He’ll spend this season on the PS, and then next season he makes the squad.

I would cut Madison in favor of Worthington. Youth and upside. We drafted and recruited enough ST demons to cover #37’s absence this year.

i like it and agree

Burnett probably gets scooped up by another team, but i hope not… I like the guy and would hate to lose him, but no numbers this year. A lot of good depth on this years team.

Also, its still early but this years draft is reminding me of ‘87 for some reason. Probably because we landed so many great players that year and this year I see 8 or 9 draft picks making the team. Also, our ROY that year, Delton Hall was a CB out of Clemson that had size and speed. We got one of those in the fifth round. It would be nice if he could hit like Hall, but i like his coverage skills better than Hall’s.

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 1:42 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I highly doubt Burnett gets grabbed off waivers

Every FO guy in the league knows about our CB woes, I really don’t think they would take a flier on a guy who couldn’t make THIS teams defensive backfield.

As to this draft class, the only guy I don’t see making the team this year is that IR’d Scott guy, and possibly Doug Worthington.

and its a good one. As far as Scott goes, i think hes on PUP. If so we PS him in six weeks. That would be a 100% hit on our draft picks this year (no outright cuts), not sure thats ever happened before…

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 2:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

You might be correct about Scott being a PUP-py

However, I would love to see DCS, Worthington, Scott, Urbik, Justin Thornton, and Joe Burnett on our PS this year. That would leave one more PS slot open for an eligible player.

Grisham WR, Jolly OT, Bright TE, Brooks OG are the frontrunners for that last slot id guess. Of the four i think id go w either Grisham or Bright since you already have two OL on the PS. Of the two id go with Bright since the future looks bright for the reveiving corps and i believe this is Spaeth’s last year here.

GB supposedly has an overload of TE

Maybe we’ll snag one of theirs.

But with Bright they were playing him a couple times at DL/DE during training camp – if he was a real TE developmental prospect I doubt they’d be shuffling him around like that, position flexibility or not.

no huge surprises

Hope R. Williams gets a gig as I thought he played his heart out but he never had a chance after that draft. Worse comes to worse, I suspect some CFL team will sign him and be thrilled they got him.

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?
