Looks like Dwyer, Sylvester and Butler all made it. Not suprised at all by this list as most of the mock 53 rosters were pretty close. I think both Dwyer and Butler made a strong push in the last 2 games to get on the final 53. Love the 2010 Steelers! Here we go Steelers here we go!!

Damn

I’d been banking on 7 DL since April

by barnerburner on Sep 4, 2010 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

They are all a phone call away

I really don’t see any of these guys being singed, maybe Sunny Harris, but I am pretty sure they can PS Doug Worthington at the very least.

by vin2k on Sep 4, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I've long been confident (hopefully not overconfident) that we could pants squad Worthington

Worthington’s the only guy we have that really does have a 6’5 frame ala Smith and Keisel, and I think he really is a future keeper.

But Harris is something of a known developmental prospect with his shuffle to Carolina and back and will definitely be in discussions for poaching during the next however many hours. But Dale Lolley did say that Harris didn’t show anywhere close to the same level of fire that he did last preseason, so hope springs eternal.

by barnerburner on Sep 4, 2010 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree

I think that he (Worthington) has a lot of potential. Would also like to see Summers picked up. All in all, I think we have a solid “53 man” roster.

Is Harris PS eligible?

I want to see DCS, Grisham, Worthington and Burnett from this list to make it on the PS.

Oh, and poor Stefan Logan

He’s going to be murdering ST’s for some team this year. Hopefully he goes to a squad that has an OC that knows what he has in this guy, and will use him properly on offense.

agree on Logan

but we did bring him out of nowhere into the giant spotlight that is the NFL, so he can land on his feet somewhere. Lotta teams need return men, and I still believe he could be a decent 4th WR for some team, speed is always useful.

by shleeve on Sep 4, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I honestly think Logan is too short to play wideout

He should be a Sproles-type scatback, if anything.

definitely a scatback rather than a wr. I hope he and many of our cuts land on their feet somewhere. I am hoping several end up on our PS.

704

704 players got cut Saturday. Of them 256 players will be added to practice squads. Those not PS eligible have a tough choices to make and a hard road ahead of them if they don’t get picked up and they want to try again next season.

Looks pretty good

I hate to see both Harris AND Worthington cut. Also, Scott sucks, wouldve been nice to see them go with Urbik instead.

Practice Squad- Harris, Worthington, Harris, Urbik, DC-S, Burnett…. Hopefully they all stick.

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 4:43 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

whoops

Meant to include Grisham there, but included Harris twice. I too wouldve loved to have seen a seventh DL. At Leftwich’s expense of course….

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 4:46 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

J. Scott

Yeah, I think the only reason he is on the roster vs. Urbik is because he came with the new OL coach.

by vin2k on Sep 4, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

J. Scott vs. Urbik was never a roster battle

Urbik was scrapping in the interior of the line with Legursky and Foster, J. Scott is a tackle. The only logic for cutting J. Scott is if you really want Urbik to be a 3rd string center/5th string guard and have Tony Hills as our lone backup tackle.

by barnerburner on Sep 4, 2010 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

How much Better was Foster then Urbik?

In my opinion Foster doesnt have as much to offer, although he did play in actual games last year. This preseason Foster seems an enigma, where as Urbik took a big step forward. I guess the FO is reaaally looking forward to pairing Foster and the other Scott

by TrueSteelerForLife on Sep 4, 2010 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

It doesn’t matter how MUCH Foster was better than Urbik, it just matters THAT Foster was better than Urbik at guard (Urbik playing a little center counts for next to nothing in my book since Legursky is backing up Pouncey and I don’t think anyone is three deep at center).

You said it yourself though – Foster did play in actual games last year. Credit Foster for coming out undrafted and beating out a 3rd rounder to play in 14 games and start 4 his rookie year. Urbik may have taken a big step forward, but he was probably already much farther behind than we realized.

by barnerburner on Sep 4, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess...

i like Foster, just thought Urbik had a better tape, at least this season

by TrueSteelerForLife on Sep 4, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, i was hoping that

Foster would replace Essex as starting RG, Essux would replace Scott as backup RT, and Urbik would be our first guard off the bench if Kemo or Foster went down. Way too much line shuffling, but in any case that was my logic.

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 5:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I get where you're coming from

But Essex is a finesse guy and I don’t think he could hack it at RT. I keep reading things here and there about how his outside game and lack of power is best suited to LT rather than RT.

by barnerburner on Sep 4, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Makes sense, in that case

I would have liked to have seen them cut Scott AND Essex in favor of Urbik and…. the PUP Scott? He (the PUP) wouldnt be available for six weeks but at least we could keep Worthington on our 53 in the mean time. Hell, maybe HE can play RG as well lol.

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 6:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, sounds like a partial forecast of next year's offseason/training camp

Sign one out of Scott/Hills to a two year small dollar contract, let Essex walk, hope that PUP Scott can force his name into discussions.

And I’d take whatever punch Worthington could probably provide the run game over Essex any day of the week.

And that he played in 15 games last year

True but

The Sepulverizer has prevented 3 punt returns fo rTD’s in the preseason, almost 1 per game.

Wish he could improve on his kickoffs and replace “sissy” Reed. I didn’t see the last game (Panthers) yet, but was told that he (Reed) “punked out” again on another return. Sepulveda tackles with “heart” and isn’t afraid to mix it up.

What you saw in pre-season included a lot of guys who aren’t on the roster.

Believe Homer J when he tells you the special coverage team will be – by far – the most improved unit on the team…..and Stevenson Sylvester will be an absolute ST monster.

This WILL BE Tomlin's team...

…..these are people who have bought into what he’s selling.

He got rid of one major case of clubhouse cancer (Holmes) and the other distraction (Big Stupid) is in the corner for a four game time out.

He brought back Randle El, Foote, and Lefty – all happy to be back and big backers of their coach. Add to that Ward, Farrior, Smith, and the other clubhouse leaders.

The new pledge class looks terrific, and there is a solid group of veterans who will bring them into the brotherhood. The chemistry here looks to be as good as it gets.

i like this 53 a lot

I had burnett instead of Madison, but I don’t think that is a big deal, bc madison is just a STer. Speaking of that Tomlin ain’t messing around with ST this year keeping two guys who don’t offer a lot outside of that in Madison and Battle.

I am really glad they kept Dwyer and Butler. Those two are going to be good. Looks like we go into the season with only two true QBs on the roster.

"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"

by John Stephens on Sep 4, 2010 6:06 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

May only be two true QBs right now

But by my count 6, 7 if you include Big Ben, played the position in college. Quite the band of brothers that found ways to reinvent themselves.

by barnerburner on Sep 4, 2010 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

The chances Tomlin is taking this year is rookie class being able to step in if needed.

Last year he gambled the young guys doing ST. That flopped. It’s the NFL, you can’t play it safe and win, if this class is really as good as it looks, we’ll be one heck of a team.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 4, 2010 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Is this the REAL roster?

I’m wondering whether we’ll see further changes in the coming days if the Steelers come to terms with any of several experienced or developmental players who might be upgrades over our backups on both lines and possibly QB.

by workingon7 on Sep 4, 2010 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

I think this'll stick for week one

We do a better job of bringing talent into training camp than most other teams, so we don’t have to do a lot of waiver wire scouring to try to round out our 53

both lines?

That is a solid DL.

"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"

by John Stephens on Sep 4, 2010 6:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don’t think we’ll find upgrades on the line on either side, our 2nd string D-line could start many places, esp Ziggy and Hoke. On Offense we have a lot of youth that are starting to come into their game.

Age of O-Linemen:

Adams: 35
Starks: 28
Kemo: 27
Essex: 27
J Scott: 27
Hills: 25
Legs: 24
Foster: 24
Pouncey: 21

Replace Adams with Colon and the O-Line would average 25.6 years old. As is it’s 26.5. Also this line with Colon is a RG from being quite good.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 4, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

thats what people tend to forget about this line

thye are young and lineman can play for a long time without a drop off in play. The only one who for sure has reached his peak for sure is Adams…

by shleeve on Sep 4, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Adams is a Band Aid

If Colon is resigned again after this season, then we are an Essex replacement away from being a good line for the next 3-4 years. Maybe Mike Pouncey is in the mix next year, eventhough he had a shity game lst night, but that was at cener

by TrueSteelerForLife on Sep 5, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Betcha that C. Butler beats out Keenan Lewis for a game-day roster spot ...

Butler can play both safety spots as well as inside nickel and outside CB spots. Keenan can’t. Hope to get Harris and Worthington onthe practice squad. Time to give the keys to C. Batch and start this train down the tracks. I’d give Dennis Dixon a pkg that he is comfortable with and let him play with that. I don’t think he is ready to lead this team right now. Tunch Ilkins said something that made a lot of since on whether it should be Batch or Dixon. He said if the team started Dixon, they wouldn’t be able to use the whole playbook, and after getting that first game film, most D coordinators in the league could shut that down. I like Batch because he is a quick decision-maker and won’t have a problem getting the ball out of his hands. Time to kick this thing off.

by datruth4life2.0 on Sep 4, 2010 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

i love to gamble, but i fold

No way I take that bet. Agreed 100%. Would love to see Butler active on game day. Im with you that it happens at Lewis’ expense.

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 7:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That’s tough, Butler hasn’t faced first string, and Lewis dominated the back-ups even more last year than Butler did this year.

I see Butler as a solid depth guy this year, maybe making the active if needed, but I don’t think he will.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 5, 2010 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Pat White, Troy Smith, Matt Leinhart, etc.

What’s the point in keeping Byron Leftwich on the 53 if he’ll miss the first two games at least. He’s a known commodity who’s as good as he’s going to get. If the team wants three QBs active for the first four games, why not sign a functioning body off the waiver wire for spare change? Leftwich won’t be picked up by someone else while his knee remains questionable. If we find we need him once he’s mobile again, I’m sure he’ll be available.

by workingon7 on Sep 4, 2010 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

I understand that Lefty...

…wants to remain a Steeler and is satisified with being a backup to Ben. He no longer has aspirations of being a starting QB or even a backup QB on another team. If true, it will set up an interesting QB situation next year between DD and Lefty. We may see DD traded and the Steelers draft a number 3 QB.

by UnclecoolD on Sep 4, 2010 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

All the more reason to give DD some looks

While Bens gone… to maximize his trade value.

by dru_dead on Sep 4, 2010 7:21 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

and see if he can step up his game.

One start is not indicative of his worth from a fan standpoint. If the coaches see something else, that’s another story, and it’s been said here before, that they brought in lefty because they didn’t think Dix could do it..

by IronJake on Sep 5, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Lord Byron is a slow healer

He wont be ready for 3 weeks minimum. Ben will be back by then. Should have given him an injury settlement. Saved a roster spot.

I thought they would keep either 7DL or 10 OL. Surprised Urbik got cut. He is better than Essex. So we need to draft a LT and RG,and NT next year.
