Troy Smith or Matt Leinart

Now I know that many of us thought the last thing we needed was anymore QB depth with this team, but does anyone think it might be smart to take a flyer on one of these guys as a reasonably priced backup?  If Dixon or Batch go down (God forbid) before Ben get back, who do we have to play?

I know smith is just another version of Dixon, but I have always liked his game a lot and I think that he could start for a couple teams in this league (SF and Oakland come to mind) while Leinart obviously was terrible in Arizona, but maybe that was more a product of the expectations of a top-10 pick (one who probably had the skills of a second or third rounder) never living up to his hype: granted he brought a lot of it on himself.

I think one of these guys would make a really good piece (and Troy Smith would light up the Ravens even if we only gave him a little playing time, I bet you he hates them.  And as well he should).

Other cuts to look into:

Bobby Carpenter: Has the talent, but I don't know what is wrong with him.  I wanted the Steelers to draft him when he came out.

TJ Houshhmandzadeh: Eh Probably not...

Josh Beekman: Guard taken in the fourth round last year got cut by the Bears.  Has potential and could be a decent pick up if the Steelers see anything in him.  Slim pickins this year.

Joe Burnett: I'm peeved about this cut.  Bring him back!

Probably too fat to move side to side.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Bobby Carpenter

Never put it all together in the Cowboys 3-4 and then he couldn’t stick with the Rams either. No reason for us to make him a reclamation project

Carpenter....

Was a total bust. He never had the talent to be a starter for any kind of aspiring team. The fact that St. Louis cut him should tell you all you need to know.

You are in for alot of crappy QB play if you sign Troy Smith. The guy deserves to be in the UFL. What games have you been watching where he looked good?

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 5, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Carpenter was a reach

And never panned out. Our version of the 3-4 is more complex than Dallas’s version, so I would have a hard time expecting anything out of him. Plus we have way too many prospects at Linebacker (never a bad thing)

Burnett was unlucky and fell victim to the numbers game. He wasnt a gunner on ST so he couldnt beat out Madison, and Butler just flat out outplayed him. He will find a team though, just needs to keep at it

Leinart deserved what he got, he almost reminds me of Ryan Leaf in terms of mindset, he just isnt as "out there: personality wise. He came to the NFL expecting success without having to really apply himself, and its stuffed up for him. Welcome to the Unemployment Line, I would be surprised if you are ever number one on a teams depth chart ever again.

Without me, youre only you

TJ whatshisface was cut?

That’s pretty interesting. I guess you never know what’s going to happen if you sign a big contract with a team on the decline.

I wouldn’t bother picking up either Leinart or Troy Smith. What’s the point? If both Batch and Dixon go down they’re going to be in major trouble any way.

The last thing this team needs is another quarterback to get the fans all hot and bothered. Not to mention the media.

Leftwich is still on the roster (huh?)

So they are not in the market for another QB.

neither

bring me Rhett Bomar, for a 3rd string QB he played pretty good against us, and if it wasnt for his college troubles he might have gotten drafted higher and became a decent QB, we could also cut either Leftwich or Batch and move forward with Bomar

Bomar didn't look bad

for a young 3rd stringer. I don’t know about his personality or intelligence but he might be a good project for some team. We don’t need another young project with a tonne of upside as we already have DD.

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

idk if he is that much of a project, he drove down the field pretty well, looked like he really knew what he was doing, it wouldnt hurt to have a more of a young pocket presence that can scramble if the DD project doesnt work out

Bomar would get chewed up against real players.

We don’t need another project QB. If there was somebody established who was halfway decent, maybe.

What do you mean "real players"?

He was decent to good against OUR 1st string D.

Who was that he kept on the bench until he screwed up off field and got dumped to a small school? Was it Bradford, Clausen? Hell I don’t remember.

Bomar might have been a 1st or 2nd round draft pick had he not gotten himself shipped off to a tiny school and forgotten about.

Bomar was a Sooner ...

All I am saying, is he played OK against a completely vanilla scheme. In the regular season, the Steeler defense would destroy him.

Bomar

is a much better QB than some slacker primmadonna like Leinart, and Troy Smith is a bad version of Dixon, Bomar seems more of a finished project than those two, im just saying if the Steelers are looking for an emergency QB Bomar would be the way to go

but he would need to learn a new offence. By the time he learned it Lefty and Ben would be back.

im thinking long term, odds are we wont need him unless both Dixon and Batch got hurt, lets face it Batch and Leftwich wont be around much longer and if Dixon does well hes going to wan a starting gig somewhere else, Bomar seems like a you viable option for the long term

Anyone know how the P.U.P. works.

All I know is it give them 6 weeks to decide on the player.
I figure Leftwich is going there, and that gives them another spot for an emergency QB. Someone mobile like Troy Smith, or someone from a similar system. Can never have too many Troy’s on the team. Similar system to Airens? ok forget that.
I was thinking the way Scott went off the field the other night, he would be another candidate for the PUP. I thought he was outplayed late in the preseason.

Leftwich can't go on the PUP list.

Only players who’ve been on the PUP list all through training camp can be put on the regular season PUP list. So Chris Scott can be put there but Lefty can’t. Scott having been on the PUP with a foot injury for the whole of camp and preseason.

Only choices with Leftwich would be:
1) Injury settlement and cut him, losing him possibly for good, or possibly til he’s healthy at which point we could look to add him again
2) Injured Reserve him losing him for the season
3) Keep him on the active 53 man roster until he’s healthy.

out of all the best mobil QBs

i think we got the best one not named Vince Young, players like Troy Smith and Pat White are nothing more than little lanky RBs that can occasionally throw the ball (wildcat) the only mobile QB ive seen and had a little interest in was the vikings Joe Webb. But he is still on their roster. But the fact that they feel comfortable enough with him to back up Jackson next year when Favre “maybe” retires

Agreed.

Leinart = too much money. Multiple teams are willing to give him some cash in order to kick the tires. He was too good in college – and not terrible in the preseason – for no one to pick him up.

Smith = a bad dennis dixon.

But seriously….we had Brian St Pierre as our 3rd string a few years ago. That role is purely to hand off the ball to the RB. Who our 3rd string QB is might be the most irrelevant conversation we could be having heading into game 1.

I agree with Mini hulk, let’s just say no and move on.

If I could have my dream job...

I would be the Colts third-string QB. You make at least veteran minimum, no one can hit you in practice, and you never have to play. I also look particularly distinguished holding a clipboard.

I love my two teams (San Francisco by birthright, Pittsburgh by adoption), but man, they both go through QB’s fast lately…

I don’t think the Steelers need Troy Smith (though I liked him coming out of college, he has not progressed enough), and I think Captain Checkdown (Leinart) would not be a good fit for the offense.
