Comparing The Steelers Of The Early 80's To The Steelers Of Today. Could We Be In The Beginnings Of A Down......Nah. That's Crazy, Right?
I've always thought it was kind of neat that there have only been two teams with 9-7 regular season records that went on to appear in the Super Bowl (the Los Angeles Rams in 1979 and the Arizona Cardinals in 2008) and the Steelers were the opponent in each contest. And the fact that the Steelers struggled to win each game despite being huge favorites only added to the intrigue.
But witnessing how last year's season imploded, I'm beginning to wonder if we may be repeating history. The history of the 1980's.
In 1980, the Steelers were trying to win a 5th Lombardi trophy, but their team was aging rapidly, especially their legendary defense which had 7 members over the age of 30.
The 1980 season marked the first time the team failed to make the postseason since 1971. They missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record. Seven losses that included some very un-Steeler-like 4th quarter collapses to the likes of the Bengals and Browns.
Last season, the Steelers were trying to repeat, and win their 3rd Lombardi trophy in 5 seasons. They could never truly get over the hump, however, and finished out of the playoffs with a 9-7 record. They, too, saw 4th quarter leads vanish time and time again, most notably against the likes of Cincinnati, Kansas City and Oakland.
The only reason why I bring up this comparison is because, much like the early 80's, the Steelers' defense is also aging pretty fast with 8 members that are at least 30 years old.
I know physical fitness is way more advanced today than it was 30 years ago, and this defense was the best in the league two seasons ago, but the defenses of the late 70's were also pretty dominant despite their age and the new rules, but once their age caught up to them in the early 80's, it caught up to them big time.
The one great thing about the NFL is players can come in right out of college and make an immediate impact.
Chuck Noll was no dummy and knew the hand-writing was on the wall and tried to replenish that defense with the likes of Robin Cole and Keith Gary. Unfortunately, he didn't find nearly the same success with those players that he did in the 70's.
The offense wasn't aging as fast as the defense, but unfortunately, Lynn Swann retired early, and Terry Bradshaw was also forced into retirement by his ailing elbow. Had Bradshaw been able to play a few more years, who knows? Maybe he matches Marino pass-for-pass in the 1984 AFC title game and the Steelers go on and get that "One for the thumb."
Instead, by the mid-80's, the Steelers had evolved into quite a mediocre football team and would remain in that state for many years.
Today, the team is trying to restock that great defense and get younger. In recent seasons, they've drafted Lawrence Timmons, Lamarr Woodley, and Evander "Ziggy" Hood.
Woodley is an all-world outside linebacker and Timmons looks to be finally coming into his own. The jury is still out on Hood, and it remains to be seen whether or not the franchise can survive the inevitable retirements of James Farrior, Aaron Smith, Chris Hoke and Casey Hampton. Ike Taylor will be a free agent after this year and may be in his last season here, and Polamalu? Let's hope that Troy has five or six great years left in him, but he's also approaching the 30 year milestone, and you never know with him. He strikes me as the kind of guy who could give it all up in a heartbeat and not think twice.
Fortunately, the team is fairly young on offense. Other than Hines, there isn't another starter over the age of 30 with the exception of The Hotel, who is just filling in for one season.
Roethlisberger, Miller, Mendenhall, Wallace, and Pouncey are either in their primes or still a few years away from reaching that point. Maybe the offense can be the strength of this team until the defense can reload.
Another thing in the Steelers favor is the structure of the NFL today compared to the early 80's. With a salary cap and free agency, teams are conditioned to turn over their roster at a quicker pace than in Noll's heyday.
The Steelers of the late 90's saw their six year playoff window close, but Cowher was able to revamp the roster in just three years and turned them into a perennial Super Bowl contender once again.
Here's hoping this current regime can do the same thing and the 10's won't resemble the 80's.

He just needs to make sure he keeps his straw in his own drink....
if you knowutimean…
Things can always be worse....
I totally agree and that's why the Bradshaw injury was worth mentioning.
Terry was no spring chicken when he retired, but had he played just a few more years…..we’ll never know. But as long as they have Roetlisberger, they can stay in the race every year.
12
The Bradshaw injury marked the end of the dynasty. His last season of 1982 was that of a Master at work. He was Montana before Montana. See the 1st 2 drives of the 83 NYJ game late in the season. Brad was Picasso at that point in his career. His game was Art.
With Bradshaw out of the picture, the 80s/90s Steelers wandered the NFL desert led by such notable names as Cliff The Stiff, Off The Mark Malone, Woodley, Brister, O’Dufus, Tomczak, Gray Ham, Slash and Tommy Gun.
While all 53 spots on the roster are important, 1983-2004 taught me the importance of having a franchise QB at the helm. That’s why unless Big Stupid has another motorcycle accident sans helmet or goes to prison for molesting a minor or some other stupid transgression we should contend for the next decade.
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
Believe it or not...
That game against the Jets is probably the most memorable Steelers game I have ever seen.
It was the first and only game he played that year… he didn’t have the rocket arm… Swann and Stallworth were gone… It was the final game at NYJ Stadium… Just an amazing feat.
Without being able to throw a deep ball — and with passes that uncharacteristicaly fluttered like ducks… Terry marched down the field and the Jets couldn’t stop him.
One of the best games I have ever seen.
His last pass was a touchdown… Amazing… It was like Samson finding his strength in his old age for one more harah…
I remember that NYJ game quite fondly.
It was weird. I was 11 at the time and, surprisingly, my mom was watching the game with me and really into it. She got really excited when Bradshaw threw his first touchdown. I hadn’t seen her that animated watching a game before or since. Maybe she thought he was cute. Maybe she went out on a date with him. They’re around the same age. It was a surreal experience.
I do agree that Bradshaw was a master from the late 70’s until he was forced into retirement. And the thing I liked about Terry was that he could throw devastating picks and fumble the ball away and he didn’t let it ruin the rest of the game. He would still come back and make plays at the end.
Lastly, I would hardly call the Steelers of the 90’s a team that wandered the desert. They never hot over the hump, but they provided us some very great memories.

cowher revamp?
Yes, in 2004..it was the 11th pick in the draft! BTW, Bill Cowher is one of the few loyal men out there! Because of BB, he got his superbowl ring and a big payday in his future with that win..No BB, no cowher superbowl! I wish the same could be said about to “other” Steelers…Bettis, who threw BB under the bus..I seem to recall that He was going to retire after the patriot loss and BB guaranteed him next year, he would get him there…Also, Jerome, you did develpe butter fingers late in your career…Remember the Jet playoff game?? Your fumble Deep in jet terroritoy? and BB saved the game in OT?? How about against the colts?? BB made that tackle and will get you in the HOF with that superbwol victory..And you too hines…throwing BB under the BUS..you think would have 2 rings without BB???

I understand saying BB is the main reason we have 2 rings this decade but to besmirch the names of 2 of the greatest players to ever don the black and gold should be a bannable offense, but alas I would probably be reprimanded for such flippant use of the ban button.
Neither player “threw Ben under the bus” Bettis was old and ready to retire, his injuries caught up with him and honestly I think he got sick of falling at the final hurdle. Jerome will be remembered as one of the all time greats not only for this ball club but in the entire NFL. Why remember the downside of an illustrious career (he was still an elite back but not the player he was) when you can recall the glory days which lasted far longer and are what he deserves to be remembered as.
Don’t even get me started on the Hines thing. He didn’t say anything too derogatory about Ben, just what many of us fans and the media were thinking. He called Ben out on his immature and prima donna attitude in the locker room and has made his QB a better leader and a better person for it. This is not even mentioning the fact that Hines is arguably the greatest WR to ever wear the Black and Gold (No offense Swanny and Stallworth) and is certainly one of the most beloved players for our proud SteelerNation.
Go and rewatch the runs to XL and XLIII if you need reminding of what those 2 players mean to our organisation.

not saying that they are evil but
Jerome did almost give the game away against the colts had not BB made that open field tackle..where would Jerome be without that? Think he goes to the HOF with that loss and NO ring? And Hines, who I love and respect, YOU DO NOT UNDERR YOUR QB IN PUBLIC!

The way I remember it
Hines’ QB was undressing himself in public… that is what started the whole mess…
Of course Jerome Bettis was a HOFer without that tackle
and the Superbowl win. He has the 5th most yards EVER from the RB position and is the greatest “power back” to ever put on a helmet in the NFL.

And...
Redman hadn’t pulled on an NFL jersey yet.
Being a perfect gentleman, he gave Jerome a 13662 yard head start…
Come on
Not this again.
Geez…. Before you throw Hines Ward under the bus… please remember that the touchdown pass he caught that day (which won him the MVP award) wasn’t thrown by Ben…
Ben had a great game against Denver. A pretty good game against Indy (our defense won that game)… but he disappeared in Super Bowl XL.
He was great in XLIII, with a very mediocre line… But BB would not have been 14-0 as a rookie starter without Jerome… And He would have never made it to where he is without Hines… so stop spreading hate…
not spreading the hate!
I am pointing out a FACT! These Steeler veterans, Hines, Snack, bettis, farrior, smiith, etc, etc went through the Tommy Maddox, stewart regimes..and they know, or should know that without BB, they have s—t! I am saying, show loyalty! Bill Cowher did, and continues to do so! Yes, he had a rocky relationship with him, but without BB, Cowher has an imcomplete resume! The bus, agreed with the suspension! The app response was to back BB WHEN the criminal charges were dropped! Kicking a man when he is down is low and cowardly!
Guys, we are looking at a 1-3 start and a possible 3rd place finish here. How many of you “moral high horse” people out there are going to like that, especially when Cedric Benson, Shaun rogers and malauga get arrested and no suspensions???

I'm OK with it
Better to be on a moral High Horse, than an apologist for someone’s Low Life.
I am not upset with the suspension — the season be damned — I think it was the best thing that could happen to Ben considering the situation. That boy was on a highway to hell, and I’m glad he got suspended. He needed that to turn his life around. He’s a better, more focused person now, and I believe that will translate into a better and more focused QB. But even if it doesn’t, I still think that what happened was what was best for Ben.
I’ll take a 3rd place finish this year, and hope for the future, over Ben getting a slap on the wrist and continuing his ways. If we ended up going to the AFC Championship game, but it meant that Ben gets charged again next season in a new sordid raper accusation… are you OK with that?
I will agree that the Commissioner seems to have a strange sliding scale when passing out judgement. But you have to understand that the judgement passed from Goodell was not his alone… the Rooneys had influence. It was better for them if the suspension came down from the NFL, so they didn’t have to add their own suspension to it.
You can get mad at Goodell if it makes you happy… but I think Ben got exactly the suspension that the Rooneys thought he needed in order to get the message.
Ben Roethlisberger is not an NFL quarterback. He is a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback. And, as such, he is held to a higher standard.
BB is not a lowlife!
can we please stop with all the personal insults! You mean to tell me that YOU never got a B——-b from a woman? Don’t tell it was rape! Alcohol and sex is a lethal combo, agreed..can You say BB should have more discretion, YES..but he neither a “low life” or criminal!

First
I didn’t call Ben a low life… Read it again. I was referring to the life he was living…
Second… I didn’t make my comment because Ben got a BJ from a woman… I have no problem with that… I made it because he (allegedly) got it from someone not old enough to drink legally, after plying her with alcohol shots and getting her drunk. And, in case you are interested, no… I never got a BJ off a college girl after getting her so drunk she barely remembered it… (Aside… geez, what is the point of any sex if you can’t remember it later???)
Third, I never said it was rape. I even think Ben got unfairly prosecuted in the media by a DA who couldn’t do it in the courtroom…
But there is no doubt that the road Ben was on was one of destruction. And he is better off now. Better four games of suspension now than four more years of the way he was living…
Yes, well, he did revamp the lineup.
Remember, they were a very big AFC favorite in the early 00’s, and during those three non-playoff years in the late 90’s, Cowher added Faneca, Hines Ward, Casey Hampton, Deshea Townsend and a few others. Players that were cornerstones over the next decade.

You don't have to tell me about what Roethlisberger means to the Steelers

Interesting... and depressing
I’m going to have to think on this one for awhile… But my kneejerk reaction is to say there are enough differences that we shouldn’t fear a down decade.
This team as a whole is younger than the 80s team. And the Steelers were unfortunate with several draft picks which put is in the hole. )I guess that was Football Karma getting back at us for the 1974 draft…)
Remember “Senior Sack?”
But this is something to chew on… the fact is that it only takes a couple of misses to suddenly fall…
Oh… and one other thing you forgot to mention: A football strike looming. I still think we would have won “One for the Thumb” in 1980 if it hadn’t been for the strike… And we might be facing one again next year…
Now that IS depressing!
Every time I write a blog, I spark a Ben debate. It must be a gift.
I do remember that strike, but it was in 1982. I remember how happy I was when they defeated the Bengals in the 2nd or 3rd week because they were swept by them in both 1980 and then 1981 and I was super excited about the season, and then just like that…….no football for a long time. Who knows how well we would have done that year if it wasn’t for that strike, but they were in the playoffs, so I guess things still worked out pretty well.
by Anthony Defeo on Sep 6, 2010 7:01 AM EDT up reply actions
Yep 1982
Sorry… going from memory…
But we looked like world beaters that year. After dropping the last three games of the season before that, we re-tooled and looked good. We switched to the 3-4 Defense and seemed to have our Mojo back.
I just remember seeing them dominating the cowboys, in Texas, on MNF and thinking: “Here we go.” People might not remember, but the Cowboys had a streak of something like 15 straight home opener victories… ended when TB threw three touchdowns in the MNF romp.
When they took a break for the strike, it seemed like everything changed. Terry didn’t seem to have the same focus when he came back. He was thinking about his next movie with Burt Reynolds, I guess. It just felt like everything changed after the strike-induced break…
If we continue to hit on 1st round picks.
There will be no real down stretch. We may have a poor season here and there, but mostly, we will be contending and competing for North titles, and possible Super Bowls. If we start missing on #1 picks, that’s when we will slide.

Nice writeup on an interesting and unique topic.
I’d have to say though this team probably reminds me more of the mid-90s 49ers rather than the early 80s Steelers. Those 49ers had won 2 superbowls, but were now getting beatin by the Bears, Giants, and Redskins. Joe Montana was still in his prime, and they were getting re-loaded in the draft (aka Jerry Rice). They eventually won 2 more super bowls. Yeah, i can dig it.
