Steelers waiver wire and practice squad news

The 24-hour deadline for clearing waivers after yesterday's 6pm cuts is approaching quickly, and things seem to be heating up. There have been two claims of former Steelers announced thus far, and we'll be updating this post as more news becomes available.

First off: according to Adam Schefter, Kraig Urbik has been claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills. The Steelers were probably hoping to sign him to the practice squad, so it'll be interesting to see if he sticks with the Bills, or ends up coming back a la Sunny Harris last year.

The AP is reporting that LB Patrick Bailey has been claimed by the Tennessee Titans, where he'll join Nate Washington and Chris Hope - is it too early to start calling Tennessee the Steelers Midwest?

UPDATE: thanks to dru_dead for this tip: insidepittsburghsports is reporting that Frank Summers has been signed to the practice squad. This is according to "a league source", so treat this one as unconfirmed for now.

UPDATE 2: Adam Schefter reports that Stefan Logan has been claimed by the Detroit Lions - he made it all the way to the second team with a chance at him.

UPDATE 3: Via steelers.com, here's your 2010 Practice Squad roster:

  • TE Eugene Bright
  • OG Dorian Brooks
  • S Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith
  • WR Tyler Grisham
  • OT Kyle Jolly
  • DT Steve McLendon
  • FB Frank Summers
  • DE Doug Worthington.

The lack of Urbik is probably the only big surprise on that list - he surely would have been signed if he had cleared waivers. I personally am very glad (though not shocked) to see that Tyler Grisham and Doug Worthington cleared waivers. It's also interesting to note that Sunny Harris didn't make it.

UPDATE 4 (by syrsteelerfan, 9/7):

According to RavensInsider (first mention I've seen) the Steelers have signed Saints DT Al Woods, a 2010 4th Round pick, lending credence to this overheard conversation:

I was eating brunch this morning in Shadyside when in walked Mike Tomlin with his family. They sat at the booth right behind mine. Tomlin got a call on his cell phone during brunch from someone named Kevin. He started talking about Al Woods, a Saints draft pick from LSU, how he had been cut by the Saints, how he's a massive guy, and asked what it would take to get him. He seemed pretty excited about it. So, I'd look out for Al Woods landing with the Steelers sometime.

He replaces Doug Worthington on the practice squad.

Summers signed to PS

After passing up offers from other teams. Says he has “unfinished business in Pittsburgh”. Personally i could care less about Summers, im more concerned about Worthington and Harris… Hopefully no one (Cleveland) scoops them up…

by dru_dead on Sep 5, 2010 5:01 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Not a fan

I’m in agreement – I never liked Summers. I was one of those upset a year ago when we waived Redman and kept Summers. Personally, I’ve yet to see him make a decent run, and I’ve never seen him block anyone. Seems like he misses everyone he tries to hit, or I see him going the opposite way the ballcarrier is going.

by Vegetable on Sep 5, 2010 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Last year I thought the same thing … but he’s had some really nice blocks this preseason. He has led the way on a few nice runs, and he’s not a terrible runner either.

something tells me that Owen is alot better at the FB position than Summers

seeing as how he played that position at WVU, broke 15 facemasks due to blocking and can hang clean 500 lbs+. I would take a shot at Owen “The Runaway Beertruck” Schmitt

U beat me 2 it with the S. Logan to Detroit news ...

I saw where Cleveland has signed 6 people to its practice squad and it doesn’t include any Steelers players (S. Harris or D. Worthington). If they get by the Broncos, then we stand a good chance of getting both on the practice squad.

Any further proof that Josh McDaniels is way over his head when you trade a future no. 1 pick for an undersized CB and then trade him the next year for a tight end that another team was going to cut? Thank goodness this team’s front office is who it is. It might miss on someone, but it usually doesn’t get fleeced.

Frank Summers, Own Schmitt, and Bruce Ariens

Frank Summers is a power running back who struggles with blocking. Owen Schmitt is a traditional fullback with a mean streak who excels at blocking. I had hoped the Steelers would draft him after it became painfully obvious (on short yardage situations) that getting rid of Dan Kreider had been a major mistake (ask Willie Parker for an objective opinion:<).

Of course, BA doesn’t believe in using fullbacks who can run, catch, AND clear the path for other runners. He prefers (if forced by the owner) to put an extra lineman in the backfield to make up for the deficiencies of his offensive line.

by workingon7 on Sep 5, 2010 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

a RB cant play FB, ask Summers, because right now our best option of a FB is Legurski (which i dont have a problem with) but “god forbid” he would need to start center, we would have a superior lead blocker for our RBs

i do like the pony backfield with Mendenhall and Redman, but thats only because well we can hand it off to Mendy or Redman, doesnt favor blocking to much, Redman is improving on his blocking though. i just dont think anything could beat Schmitt at FB, Redman at HB, on goal line, hand it off to Redman with Schmitt leading the way to the endzone. unbeatable.

Correct me if I'm wrong

But wasn’t Franco drafted as a FB? I seem to remember him and Rocky running pretty good together where they took turns running or blocking for each other.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to have a FB who is also an offensive threat. I’d much rather have Redman and Mendenhall in a pony backfield then just have a blocking fullback.

by lkwdsteel on Sep 6, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Fullback

Was a lot different back then though

Bleeding Black and Gold.....forever

by Michael Hewitt on Sep 6, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The only reason Franco was a fullback at Penn State was because the starting tailback was a player by the name of Lydell Mitchell. Franco was most definitely the tailback and Rocky was the fullback. However like steeler underscore mentioned the fullback was used differently then it was in the Bettis era. The Steelers lined up a lot in split back formations rather than an I.

by worldtrip on Sep 6, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Correct

What they used back then is basically about the same as the Pony backfield that Arians said he wanted to start using. But has said in the past he hasn’t had the right two RBs to do so. Which I guess means he had to have one back that could could be used as either a RB or FB along with Mendy on the field at the same time.

The more I learn -The less I think I know! Just enjoy reading and sharing.

With a performance like saturday, he’ll be available in the 5th round for us as a center. Having about 10 botched snaps in a game doesn’t impress the scouts the last time I checked.

Draft him late, then we just need to move him back to his natural position at RG.

I went out last night to Raleigh, got hammered, very hammered. slept for 4 hours and went to work. worked for 2.5 hours and then drove to Carolina Beach, a 2 hour drive. drove back another 2 hours, and went to work for 2 more hours. Now supposedly I’m going to Acid Park tonight with my cousin. Yesterday and Today have been the longest days.

Harris hasn’t been claimed yet right? Feel like we would’ve heard by now if he was. Then maybe Dorian Brooks and DCS. I’d throw in a TE scooped up from somewhere because I’m not the biggest fan of Eugene Bright.

If McLendon gets healthy he might be added down the line, but Worthington/Harris/McLendon might be a lot of DL on the practice squad at one time. And when Chris Scott comes off the PUP list he’s bound to land on the pants squad soon after.

I wish we would have

1) cut Hills
2) moved Essex to backup LT/G replacing Hills
3) annointed Foster the starter at RG
4) kept Harris or Worthington on the 53

Our RG spot may have been slightly weaker by doing this because Essex is the better pass blocker and line continuity would be further challenged (we’d have three new starters, in other words 60% of the line would be new). However, Foster is a better run blocker anyway and we’ll run more while Ben’s gone.

Our line would be stronger overall however because Essex is a better option than Hills to fill in for Starks if he goes down. Essex also has better position flexibility than Hills, allowing us to keep 8 OL instead of 9. This would allow us to keep and groom for the future, a seventh defensive lineman, Worthington or Harris.

Now we have to hope no one scoops them off our pants squad. Given that they even make it there…

by dru_dead on Sep 6, 2010 3:44 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Hills has improved signifigantly this offseason

essex might have better position flexibility than hills, but i wouldnt feel comfortable having him playing at any of the 5 line spots. hills has played far above expectations this preseason, and im glad we kept him

by hasay on Sep 6, 2010 7:49 AM EDT up reply actions

yea

now if he can make that next leap and push for willie colon’s job then not only will that make the FO look smart, it will help our team so that they can focus on other areas in next yrs draft, I’m not having too much hope about foster we might need to draft mike pouncey, we don’t need him to snap, maybe with his bad snaping he’ll fall to a 3 round pick

Agreed about Foster, disagreed about Hills

I dont see Hills taking that next big leap. I hope im wrong but i see him as a career backup. If someones a career backup i want them to have position flexibility.

Im not holding out hope on Foster either, as far as being a long term starter. I see him as a good backup swing G/T, just like Essex.

In next years draft i see us going
1. NT
2. OG
3. FS

This is the last year for both Hills and Essex imo.

Tackle is a totally different position than center and guard, You need a good Tackle to back-up your starters and spell them, playing Guard is a boost, but Tackle is a much more important position and you don’t want to gamble there.

With coach Kugs influence and If Colon comes back. I think with a strong good young RG from the 2011 draft the Steelers offense both run and pass would be awesome.

Agreed on Kugs, he seems to be a huge upgrade over coach porn. Id actually like to see a stud LG taken and Kemo moved to RG when the rook is ready. In the meantime the rook starts at RG? I second the post that says Colons done, as this was the last year of his contract plus the injury.

Im bummed that we apparently lost Worthington for the Saints fourth round DT. I would have rather seen McClendon or Summers go instead. As it sits now we have two potential replacements for Hoke and none for Eason, let alone Keisel… As we know theyre all getting older, but maybe since theyre Dlinemen in a 34 maybe they have a few more years left.

He slimmed down to about 315 last season

having been much heavier in the past, about 340 iirc

Interestingly Jay Ratliff is reportedly at 6-4 310 so if Woods can play at that sort of weight, that’d still a NT.

3. DE Worthington
4. DL Harris
5. WR Grisham

but it was a very difficult choice for the team. Detroit should be thrilled to have him and I hope he does very well there.

If the Steelers are desperate for an ex-CFL KR they could probably steal Larry Taylor off the Jets PS.

Woods

This is a pretty interesting move, even though it’s only on the PS. Woods, unlike Harris or Worthington, could fit in very nicely as a DE in our defense, but he needs some work, and more importantly, he needs motivation. I find this interesting mainly because we’re stashing a poor character athlete on our PS, which we usually fill with low-upside backup-types like Scott Paxson.

Worthington, Sunny Harris just a phone call away ...

Don’t know anything about DT Al Woods but the practice squad is pretty much like a bus stop. People will be getting on and getting off this bus all season. I got a feeling that we’ll be seeing Harris and Worthingto again. Was definitely hoping either could have beat out Eason but they couldn’t do it. He outplayed both of the youngsters. Let’s see what type of identity this team will develop. I would still start Batch over Dixon, but I appreciate Tomlin giving young guys a shot.

Tyler

We need to keep this guy, I have seen him play alittle and I see a Wes Welker in him. Could be a good slot reciever.
