Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Ask The Falcoholic!

Thank your deity of choice that the season is starting.

After months of practices, speculation, and outright boredom, we fans finally get the chance to see some football that matters. As games to start off the season go, this ought to be a good one: A tough defensive team and one of the NFL's iconic squads (you) versus and up-and-coming team with a powerful offense (us.) I'm looking forward to it.

Before we get there, I thought it might be helpful for you to know more about our Atlanta Falcons. Want to know if Michael Turner will tear the field asunder on his way to 10 touchdowns? Want to know who the heck is below our depth chart at wide receiver? Never heard of a Kroy Biermann, but want to know why he's become a fan favorite? I can answer that for you.

So here's to a great game, and hopefully I'll be able to answer all your questions. If you could Recommend this FanPost so it stays up at the top of the list for those who have lots of inquiries, it would be very much appreciated.

which QB would the falcons like to see start?

Dennis Dixon or Charlie Batch.

I wasn’t pleased because we didn’t win - Mike Tomlin (after the 2009 week 2 loss to Chicago).

by fanofsteel on Sep 6, 2010 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

Interesting you bring that up

We’ve been discussing that nonstop over at The Falcoholic this last week.

Personally, I’d rather see Batch. I know he’s the more experience option and he’s a better fit for the offense, but he’s about as average as they come in my mind. That’s not to say the Steelers couldn’t win with him, but I do believe the passing game would be less of a threat.

Dixon scares me because he’s so physically talented. You never know if he’ll take off for a ten yard score or throw a dart to Mike Wallace, or if he’ll huck a bad interception. He could be the better matchup for the Falcons, but I don’t like the aura of unpredictability around him.

ie the Dixon supporters amongst us. Batch is solid yet predictable. Dixon holds the element of surprise. (he’ll either suck or he won’t. We’re always surprised.)

IMO, Batch is smart enough to know where to throw the ball and to who and would pick your D apart little by little with out a mistake (unless theres a miscue with the WR), the only question is his durability and stamina, how many hits can he take behind the O-line, can he throw the long ball and how many times can he throw the ball or run away from a blitz with out getting exhausted. with Dixon we dont need to worry about that. But we need to worry about his decision making and ball placement, for example running when he could have made a big play to a WR or throwing the ball into a bad situation were it could get picked off

I worry about Dixon with the Right side of our line being the weakest part of our entire team.

If you watch we always roll him right, and he goes right when he scrambles. . . Not a good combo.

Well, we were disappointed

But it wasn’t happening in a vacuum.

You had Ryan himself dealing with toe injuries, Michael Turner out, injuries along our offensive line and a tough schedule. At the end of the day, he danced around in the pocket too much, but he still had a solid enough season.

With everyone healthy and another year of the coaching staff telling him to plant his damn feet when he throws, I think he’ll have a nice season. He’s not the next Peyton Manning, but he’s developing in an upper echelon QB.

He's looked good in limited action

We’re going to rely on Jerry to provide a pass rush push from the middle of the line, so he has to step up. Assuming he’s truly healthy, he ought to be good for 4-5 sacks and should open up holes for Kroy Biermann and John Abraham on the edges.

They're both undersized

If we need to play a true NT, we’re turning to Trey Lewis (well over 300 pounds). For the most part, the Falcons’ line is mobile and relies on getting around linemen. We’ll see how that goes against you.

Since 2008

The Titans (with Jason Jones filling in for Haynesworth), Colts (Eric Foster), and Cardinals (Dockett) games stand out, but you could throw the Cowboys in as well since they run a 3-4 with an undersized NT. We really didn’t face as many athletic DT’s in 2009, although the Titans again completely shut us down. The Bears game was sort of a push.

The only real exception over the past 2 years has been last years’ Vikings game where we ran well in limited attempts.

A good question on Redman is do you have some elite tacklers at Safety or LB? Redman is great in traffic and just bowls for yards, bouncing and dragging people.

Tackling is a lost art in the NFL for the most part, hitting won’t bring down a Redman style back, so do you guys have a LB or Safety that are great at just taking a tough runner down?

Curtis Lofton is your man

He easily piled up well over 100 tackles last year, and he’s one of the hardest hitting linebackers in the entire league. He makes his living against the run, too, so that’ll be a matchup to watch.

Thanks for coming over!

When you look at our defense, where do you think the Falcons can attack us? Any spots you hope they test or weaknesses they can exploit?

On your defense, what is your defense going to try to do to us, do you bring lots of pressure, let the front 4 handle the rush, play man or zone more, etc.

Lastly how good do you think your KR game is, both covering and returning, do you think you can win that battle against our revamped ST?

Thanks again for coming over.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 6, 2010 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

Glad to answer

I think the Falcons will have to hit you with a balanced attack. Obviously your defense is pretty tough top to bottom, though I do like Roddy White on any of your cornerbacks. If we can get Turner around the edge and Matt Ryan can find White and Tony Gonzalez, I like our chances.

You’ll see a lot of four-man blitzes from the front four. Our defensive coordinator is a fairly conservative guy, preferring to leave the linebackers in coverage in case things go wrong up front, so the Falcons will be trying to limit big gains all game. You’ll see a lot of Kroy Biermann and John Abraham around the edges.

Our kick coverage is very, very good, and Michael Koenen is one of the best directional punters in the league. He’ll be looking to limit your return yardage all game. Kick and punt returner Erice Weems is very elusive, but I doubt he’ll break anything big for us.

Coner backs under rated

Everyone likes their WRs on our cornerbacks. Because they get the least amount of press because they don’t get a lot of picks. But Ike Taylor is a real good corner, he just doesn’t get a lot o pics because he can’t catch. With Troy patrolling the field and flying everywhere I feel very confident about our secondary. Remember Will Gay was our starting corner last year, now there are two corners ahead of him on the depth chart and he is back to his natural nickel position. But what I think you’ll find is that our secondary won’t be swiss cheese like it was last year.

Gonzalez

If I weren’t so dreadfully pessimistic about our offenses’ ability to do anything productive, I’d say Gonzalez vs. Timmons is one of the key matchups. At this stage in their careers, Timmons is probably the better athlete, but TG has the type of veteran savvy that could still give Timmons a lot of trouble in coverage. Shutting down Gonzalez would go a long way toward convincing me that Timmons is finally starting to live up to his athletic potential in coverage.

Glad you asked!

A former low-round pick out of Montana, Biermann has become a nasty sack machine. He posted five in limited PT last season. This year, he’s got a healthy Jon Babineaux and Peria Jerry next to him, and he’ll be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks all season long. He’s a bit undersized, but very strong and quick, and he piled up three sacks and two forced fumbles in three pre-season games against first team offenses.

I’m not worried with the man Starks will be blocking, but I’m a bit worried with Flozell. We shall see what your pass-rush is capable of.

Here’s another question: how are your tackles playing? They’d better be playing pretty well, because Woodley and Harrison are looking forward to cause havoc in your backfield.

Sam Baker on the left side

Has short arms but an excellent frame, and he tends to block pretty well. He’s prone to lapses, which could be dangerous for Matt Ryan. On the other side, Tyson Clabo is fine against the pass, but he’s really dangerous around the run. A nasty, nasty lineman.

A running back to spell Turner

Do you have a decent one? This is a game where I wouldnt risk Turner taking a 25 carry pounding. These days with how physical the game is getting, I dont think you can run Turner 370+ times in a season like you did 2 years ago.

Another question is, speedy defensive lines like yours usually are the type that give us fits (ala Indy). We know about Abraham, and about Anderson whos being labelled a bust, whos bringing the heat from the other side of the DL?

Bleeding Black and Gold.....forever

by Michael Hewitt on Sep 6, 2010 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

Seconded - is Abraham still your lone man pass rush?

And how’s Weatherspoon progressing? I know Curtis Lofton is being bandied around as the breakout star this year (getting a lot of ink around ESPN), but I had some pipe dreams about us picking up Weatherspoon so he could play behind Ziggy Hood again just like at Mizzou, but alas it wasn’t meant to be

by barnerburner on Sep 6, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Weatherspoon's coming along

He takes some bad angles and he’s still not the tackler you’d like to see, but he’s progressing. I’m not worried about him at this point. He’s still got perhaps the most well-rounded skill set of any of our linebackers.

by Dave Choate on Sep 6, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

We have three decent ones behind him

Jerious Norwood is lightning fast, when healthy. Jason Snelling is built like Turner and catches well out of the backfield. Antone Smith is the new guy, but he looks electric with the ball in his hands, as well.

I think they’ll spell Turner, though he’s still going to get far-and-away the most carries.

On the other side, it’s Biermann (see above). Lawrence Sidbury is a promising second year player who is developing into a nasty pass rusher. You can’t understate the potential impact in the middle of the line, either, where Jon Babineaux, Peria Jerry, Corey Peters, Vance Walker and Trey Lewis—yes, all five of our defensive tackles—have shown an ability to get to the quarterback.

That's the problem with comparisons

Every player that comes into the league is compared to someone else that came before them. T.J. Duckett is an excellent fit for a mobile, zone blocking scheme like the kind run by Alex Gibbs, because there’s almost always a hole to squeeze through. For a supposed power back, he is horrible at breaking away from contact, though.

What's your secondary like?

And what’s your typical base coverage, zone or man? A lot of jamming at the line or not so much? I feel like I’ve heard places that you’uns run a cover-2, but perceptions are wrong sometimes and schemes change, so I’d like a fan’s perspective.

I wrote in another post that your undersized DL will give us fits in the running and passing game and Dixon didn’t look great against a zone last year, so I’m pessimistic about our chances unless our defense scores multiple TD’s. How do you’uns feel about your defense in general?

by BadMaafala on Sep 6, 2010 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

We've moved increasingly toward man

The Falcons do like to jam at the line, and Dunta Robinson, Brent Grimes and Chris Owens are all physical corners for their size. We don’t run a true Cover 2, but you’ll see our coaches mixing that in from time to time.

We feel a lot better about our defense than in years past. We’re deeper, stronger up front and stronger in the secondary. This is probably a middle of the pack to bottom of the top of the pack (did that even make sense?) defense, but that’s considerably better than in years past. It sounds like you’re starting Dennis Dixon, too, so he may want to watch out for Grimes. He’s a little dude, but he can absolutely sky and he picked a ton of passes in limited starts last year.

Michael Turner and Sean Witherspoon

How many yards are you realistically expecting from him in the game? Steelers have one of he best rushing defenses, if not the best in the league.

I’ve also read on the Falcons board that most people seem to be rooting for Sean Witherspoon to spy Dixon the entire game. Dixon is fast so obviously whoever is spying him has to be able to get to him before he gets going. Is Witherspoon really that fast and should you trust a rookie with the job of covering a mobile QB like Dixon? Some defenders in one-on-one situations tend to look rather foolish sometimes, especially rookies.

by Systemize on Sep 7, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

From Turner?

He’s probably good for 70-80, but it’ll probably come on 20 some odd carries. He’s going to grit his teeth and pound the ball to keep our offense balanced.

Honestly, we ought to have linebacker Stephen Nicholas shadowing Dixon. He’s arguably faster than Weatherspoon, has a few years in the league under his belt and is known for being a terrific athlete in pursuit. I’m hopeful that’s the matchup we’ll see.

by Dave Choate on Sep 7, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that's agreeable

My thinking is Atlanta will pound the run game early and often because they won’t be facing Big Ben so they’ll be more inclined to play with a small lead or control the clock so that Dixon won’t be able to make any splash plays. Plus it will keep Ryan on his feet.

A variation is “That’s what she said last night”. (TWSSLN)

Who are your 10 biggest playmakers. 5 from O and 5 from D.

What match-ups do you find favorable for your squad this Sunday?

What match-ups do you find UN-favorable for your team this Sunday?

How is your OC’s situational playcalling, and how long is his contract? (read: We desperately need an OC than can call the proper plays in certain situations, and isn’t so fucking stubborn about playing the game “his way”.)

That’s all for now. :)

valley girls (or something) always try to bring people down? now maybe if me and english and 50 were hanging out in the guys bathroom talking about how we can’t stand arn and his driveby’s, then I’d be a valley girl. at this juncture, i’m just someone telling you that there is no such thing as a team with 10 true play makers. out of the players you listed there, only deebo, woodley, troy, heath, and hines are play makers. and even then you could argue that hines is just eerily consistent, not a “splash” play type person. keep in mind the steelers are ranked one of the most talented teams in the nfl.

you should probably get it through your thick skull that your opinions are just as invalid as every other person’s here. anyone that says anything even slightly sideways towards you gets you loading your condescension cannon. what about “most teams can’t afford 10 playmakers” is difficult to understand? it’s not bringing you down, it’s barely even a complete sentence.

thats a non-response. I guess I could respond with “Really? A statement that really doesn’t say anything but deflect the pressure of a response off of yourself? That’s all you got?”

But I won’t. I’m going to ask why you’re being a hypocrite. Multiple times on this blog you have claimed that your sense of humor is abrasive and people have to get used to it and thats that. Does it really make you feel better about yourself when you act like this? I sure hope so, because this “e-fight” isn’t making me feel bad.
