Quick Analysis of the Ravens WR corps

Department of Redundancy Department

Star-divide

Much has been made about the Ravens recent acquisition of T J Houshmanzdadeh, on top of their prior signing of Anquan Boldin.  But I don't think the Ravens are doing Joe Flacco any favors here. Consider their top 3 receivers and their attributes:

Receiver #1:  Anquan Boldin is a very good receiver who gets open, makes the tough catch and can get yards afterwards.  However, he is not a deep threat or a playmaker.  He is 30.

Receiveer #2: Derrick Mason is a good receiver who gets open, makes the tough catch and can get yards afterwards.  However, he is not a deep threat or a playmaker.   He is 36.

Receiver #3:  T J Houshmanzdzadeh is a good receiver who gets open, makes the tough catch and can get yards afterwards.  However, he is not a deep threat or a playmaker.   He will be 33 this month.

Flacco has 3 solid receivers there.  But Flacco has a cannon for an arm.  That arm will largely go to waste with a short to intermediate passsing game.   The only deep threat on their roster (Donte Stallworth) is out with a serious foot injury.   The Ravens have no deep threat.  What Flacco needs is a Mike Wallace or even an Emmanuel Sanders. I think that teams will be able to cheat their safeties with impunity.  Even their drafted rookie (David Reed) is not a speedster.  What do you think?

they were also paired up with the likes of Larry Fitzgerald and Chad OchoSucko/Chis Henry (in Cinci) to take the heat of them and both had deep threats to keep the safeties honest, the middle of the field is going to be crowded like a highway after a big rig accident. Better hope Flacco has a laser guided system on that arm, because every throw is going to be accurate

Boldin is very good

which will make Mason and Housh look better. Birds have that power running game, an excellent running/receiving back, and a QB with an arm capable of getting the ball to an excellent trio of receivers….fortunately the D is aging and injury riddled…this team is better on O than D! Game 4 w/o BB is gonna be tough, hopefully the B&G D is better than that bird O and the Steelers win with special teams :)

The D is aging yet we got younger at many positions? Stop saying the defense is aging just because Ray Lewis is 35. You guys have WAY more players in their 30’s starting for you on defense than we do.

by tannofsteel84 on Sep 8, 2010 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

The deep threat thing is overrated in my opinion. Sure it helps to have that guy who can take one 50-60 yards, but we are a possession team that loves to control the clock. With these 3 WR, we can focus on getting the first downs and letting our 3 pro bowl ball carriers run it down the field. Would much rather have a 10 play drive eating up 6-7 minutes than a 3 play drive eating up only 2 minutes, and then letting a QB like Peyton Manning right back on the field to shred you.

The guys we have might not get the crazy long TD’s like Wallace can, but what does it matter if they are still getting around 1,000 yards next year?

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 8, 2010 9:03 AM EDT reply actions

Deep threat is needed

why do you think the Jets grabbed Holmes. Who was their legitimate deep threat last season? You need someone to stretch the field. I think none of your guys will get 1000 yards, but thats okay cuz your offense is a possession, clock controlling offense. You guys have improved on offense but so have we on defense. Steeler vs Ravens will always be a heavy hard hitting games no matter the personnel. even if they are over 30

by PCISteeler on Sep 8, 2010 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Deep threat is needed

they open things up for the possession guy, its like in basketball, having a team with no 3 point shooters, everyone just clogs the lane and it gets more difficult to drive inside even if you have some guys who can drive well. Does that make sense? If you don’t have anyone with a deep threat people will crowd the line clutter things up in the middle because none of your WR are going to burn anyone deep. It makes it more difficult even though they are good at what they do. You need a deep threat to keep that safety honest and to open up things in the middle. Flacco will be throwing through some tight windows, if they make it through. Or he’ll just dump to ray rice. We’ll see.

You don’t need to have 4.3 speed to be able to stretch the field.

by PixburghArn on Sep 8, 2010 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, but huh? Every WR in the league can catch, not everyone can run a 4.3. It is a lot harder to cover a guy running his routes if he is that fast. It makes recovering easier.

Anyway, this quote kind of reminds me of an assistant lacrosse coach I had in HS. He used to say really obvious things and we all hated it. “When the ball is on the ground, scoop it up.” “If we score more goals than them, we will win.” Etc. “If they don’t cover them, they’ll catch the ball and they’ll score.” Very insightful Harbaugh. If I don’t tackle the running back on the goal line, is he going to score, John?

Not too add

A fast guy makes a safeties job harder because he has to make his decisions quicker. He cannot hesitate or its going to be 1on1 coverage. I’ll take Wallace in a 1on1 any day.

John Madden. I always enjoyed his school of “state the incredibly obvious” commentary.

Ie, “He got there first cause he ran faster”, and, quite literally, “the team that scores more points wins”.

genius

if you aren’t as fast then you don’t require safety help. which mean the safeties can cheat inside, not to mention the fact that everything happens so fast in the NFL, .1 or .2 seconds could be the difference between an pass defended, sack, or a catch. You need those extra split seconds to read and process the defense, if they are too slow to get open in that time frame then that usually equates to a sack. Sounds like your coach is delusional like you are.

Right Tackle is hurting right now. Gaither is day to day and might not play on MNF. Backups are serviceable, but it would hurt losing Gaither for the start of the season.

LB in pass coverage seems to need some work as well. Ray Lewis doesn’t have the speed anymore to cover a TE or 3rd WR every time and the other guys just need to stop falling for the play action and get in the right position.

CB is not a weakness, just uncertain of what will happen in the beginning. Webb and Washington should see starting time on MNF and those are 2 of our top CBs that played well last year. We have the guys we want, just need them to get back to 100%.

Gonna suck losing Ed Reed for the first 6 weeks, but we have prepared ourselves for that with Zbikowski who is looking damn good.

I have you guys 10-6???

theres one problem with all this.

i agree that all these guys have similar skills and therefor the ravens will have a hard time stretching the field. but whats worse is that housh and mason are no longer able to get the yards after the catch that they used to be. i have the feeling that the ravens could turn into the 09 broncos where they cant push the ball downfield.

they

couldn’t really push the ball down field last year

Steelers football is supposed to be 60 mins, recently it's been 45. The additional 15 are currently under construction.

One thing is for sure - they are better at WR than last year

Speed may be lacking but the Ravens have more talent now. How they use it and the chemistry between these guys is a bigger question mark than whether they are good individually.

Until the Steelers got rid of Holmes, you could argue they had the best WR corps in the league last year. They are still good but now we lost speed and quickness. I hope A R-El can add some underneath stuff and provide some razzledazzle to the trick play package. He and DD in the same shotgun backfield could be interesting…

Flacco's arm and other thoughts.

Flacco’s arm is going to get good use. Mid out’s, crosses, with these receivers the passes will have to be coming fast because they get space, but they aren’t going to get a whole lot of it. His arm strength isn’t going to be superfluous, it’ll be necessary.

As to MaLoR’s just run deeper quotes, I’m sorry, but running deeper doesn’t make the defense adjust to you. It’s not like at the snap defenses choose whether to cover a WR or let them run free. The difference is where they line up in order to be able to keep up with the WR. If safeties can cheat up because they can catch your WR’s in a foot race then you don’t have a deep threat no matter how long the routes go. If you have a Mike Wallace who is going to burn your corner and safety if they don’t pay attention to him and back up to start that opens things up.

Most defenses aren’t going to be able to cover those three, three corners who can cover wily veteran possession guys? Not common, esp. when they are rather physical. But you will find them, I think we can do it with our squad (possible homer-ism) and there’s likely other teams that can do it also.

Again I think the possible exception lies in two rookie TE’s and Cam Cameron. If the young guys can force Safeties to respect their routes (IE not coverable by LB) then they can offset the lack of WR speed. Cameron is a hell of an OC (jealousy? yes sir) and I expect the Ravens to end up a lot like the 05 Seahawks. That team went to the Super Bowl and was the better team there. Without a TE contributing and Dick Lebeau’s defense shutting down their YAC completely the offense sputtered. Ravens have a strong running game like Seattle did, but I don’t respect Baltimore’s line like Seattle’s 05 line. I think we can stop their offense in a playoff match, and I think Ben can find a way to win if Wallace, Hines and Heath get some help from ARE or (Hopefully) Emmanuel Sanders creating match-up difficulties for the Ravens secondary.

Where the analogy falls through is while I don’t expect Housh to bounce back to top receiver form, Boldin is still one tough SOB, and while I like Ike on him a lot, Boldin isn’t going to punk out like the Hawks receivers did. I also think Ray Rice will get tons of catches this season, if he stays healthy.

Lastly, If Stallworth comes back full strength for the playoffs, the Ravens WRs will be a very good unit with a deep threat. That can change the game pretty quick.

I'm still amazed that Reed was able to make that field goal.

How in the hell did he plant, and get stable enough to make the kick? IIRC, it was only a 20-something yarder, but still…

LOL

Thank you! Never gets old

"I’m going to say Phillip Rivers. The first time Isacked him, I got up and did my little celebration. He started talking trash and saying, "Get back in the huddle" and woofin’. So I told myself that the next time he’d pay the price. The next time I got him, I took him on what I call the "rollercoaster." He met the ground and I stood over him. When he got up he was a little woozy. On the next play he threw the ball away before I could get him again. After I hit him that time he couldn’t say anything and I didn’t have to celebrate. I just wanted to look in his eyes and let him know that
Number 56 put him in the dirt." - Lamarr Woodley
