Ranking the 32 NFL QBs
Quarterback in the NFL, the second most important position in all of team sports, is the glamor position. A goalie in the NHL has a more significant impact on the outcome of a contest, but football is America's game and quarterbacks get their names on the marquee. I've ranked this year's 32 NFL starters. Here's how they break down:
BUSTED IN CANTON:
This is the easy group. They've all won at least one Super Bowl. They consistently play at the highest level. These are the guys that you'd want your daughter to marry. Well, okay, maybe not Ben.
1.) Peyton Manning, IND: Manning is now in the discussion about who is the best player in the history of the league. The strikes against him are some notable failures in big games and the fact that he's only 9-9 in the playoffs. The interception against the Saints in last year's Super Bowl has happened a few too many times for him to wear that crown. But Manning is amazing to watch. It's the conductor leading the symphony when Peyton takes the Colts down the field in the no-huddle. Since his rookie season he's 128-48 and he's never missed a start. His QB rating has been 95.0 or higher every year since 2003. He alone makes the Colts a contender. Surprisingly he's still only 34. What most impresses me about Manning is the respect he gets from players all over the league. They all want to play with him. The players know.
2.) Drew Brees, NO: Playing for the perfect coach in Sean Payton, Brees is flourishing. Undersized but remarkably accurate, Brees probably wouldn't have made it in the 1980s NFL. 2009? MVP and Super Bowl champion. Right guy, right place, right time.
3.) Tom Brady, NE: This will be an interesting season for Brady. After missing all of 2008, he came back and had a good, not great, 2009. Giselle's husband's legacy is cemented but it will be interesting to see how he plays with a chip on his shoulder, especially since the team around him might be the weakest it's been while he's been at the helm. One more Super Bowl title and he'll get in that conversation with Manning about best ever.
4.) Ben Roethlisberger, PIT: Ben's personal problems are now permanently part of his bio and he'll miss the first four games of this season due to suspension. Nonetheless, he is a great player who already owns two Super Bowl rings. He has a rare combination of size and elusiveness and has been successful even though he rarely been surrounded by the talent or enjoyed the stability that the guys above him have. He's 60-26. He has an 8-2 record in the playoffs. In the two losses they scored 27 and 29 points. That says it all.
A CUT BELOW:
Anyone of these guys could easily jump up to the bottom of the group above. They just have to get it done when it really matters. In the playoffs.
5.) Philip Rivers, SD: After the 2005 season the Chargers had to choose between Brees and Rivers, who had spent his first two seasons on the bench. They went with Rivers and it's hard to argue they made the wrong choice. Since taking over he's gone 46-18. Not bad. He's a fiery leader who should be in his prime at age 29. He's led the league in yards/attempt the last two years and if the Chargers can put enough talent on the defensive side of the ball I have no doubt Rivers can take them to the Bowl.
6.) Aaron Rodgers, GB: The poor bastard had to sit behind Brett Favre for three years. That would crush most guys. In 2008, his first year as starter and without much help, Rodgers led the Pack to a 6-10 record. Last year they went 11-5 and he threw for more than 4,400 yards. This year the Packers are many people's NFC Super Bowl team. We'll see if Rodgers, maybe the most physically talented quarterback in the league, can get them there.
7.) Matt Schaub, HOU: It's impossible to be an unknown NFL QB, but Schaub comes closest. He's also the most underrated player in the game. The knock against him is that he's only 19-21 as a starter and has yet to get his team to the playoffs. That's a pretty big knock. But Schaub has all the tools and I think he's a darkhorse MVP candidate after throwing for a league-leading 4,770 yards last year. I expect Schaub to put up huge numbers and Houston to make its first playoff appearance this year.
8.) Tony Romo, DAL: I'm not sure what I think about Romo. His QB rating has been incredibly consistent all four years (between 91.4 and 97.6) and he's 38-17 as a starter. But his team has been loaded with offensive weapons and he's only 1-3 in the playoffs. He turned 30 in April so he isn't a kid anymore. Expectations are off the charts this year in Big D and Vegas has them as one of the favorites to win it all. Needless to say, this is a big year for him.
WERE OR COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT:
These guys all have tons of talent but seem to be heading in the wrong direction.
9.) Carson Palmer, CIN: The poster boy for guys who never made "the leap." In Palmer's case it's really more that he couldn't sustain it. In 2005 he led the league in TDs and completion percentage then tore his knee up in the first quarter of the Bengals playoff loss to Pittsburgh. He hasn't been the same player since. Like Romo he's 30. This year he'll be trying to guide the Bengals to back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since '81-'82. To do it, he'll need to regain the form that made him one of the NFL's three best QBs five years ago. Babysitting his two diva receivers may end up being a bigger challenge.
10.) Brett Favre, MIN: I was actually rooting for Favre to come back this year. Yes, he's an egotistical, attention-seeking, self-centered bitch. Yes, I've rooted against him my whole life. But, for some reason, I've kinda started to like him. His toughness is beyond legendary and he does have fun when he's winning. Last year he might have played the best football of his life. I don't think he can repeat it, but it will be fun watching--good or bad.
11.) Donovan McNabb, WAS: He's on the downside of a very good, not great, career. He should be able to get the Skins to seven or eight wins, but they just don't have enough good players. We've seen the best of Donovan and my expectations are low from here on out.
12.) Eli Manning, NYG: I'll never fully get my head around the fact that Eli Manning won a Super Bowl. I just don't think he's that good. I put him here just because I didn't want to take a load of crap for putting him 20th.
SHOWTIME:
These guys are at various stages of trying to solidify their future as NFL quarterbacks and get paid in their next contract. A bad year and few of them will never get another chance to start.
13.) Matt Ryan, ATL: I didn't think he was great when he was at BC, but he's been very solid in his first two years. I'll get to see him in person for the first time on Sunday at Heinz Field. The Falcons have high hopes this year and getting an opening day win on the road would do a lot of good for everyone's confidence. I'll know a lot more about Ryan after week one.
14.) Joe Flacco, BAL: Everyone but me loves Joe Flacco. What's not to like: prototypical QB size at 6'6" and 230 lbs. Guided his team to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons. Good teammate. Got it. I'm on record as saying the Ravens aren't making the playoffs this year. I don't think their defense is going to be as good as in years past and I think Flacco is going to take a step back--even with the additions of Boldin and Houshmandzadeh. Gut feel. Bet all your money.
15.) Jay Cutler, CHI: Jay Cutler and Mike Martz together. Wow. 24-29 career record as a starter. If he has another bad year I'm just going to chalk it up to him being too dumb. I can't come up with any other reason. Really.
16.) Jason Campbell, OAK: This guy has had a rough ride and I'm now rooting for him. I've always been partial to Auburn guys. I think he's had seven different offensive coordinators his last seven years. I also think he's gotten a little better every year and think he can actually help turn the Raiders around. He's only 28. Al Davis is hoping he's the next Jim Plunkett. It's definitely worth a roll of the dice. I expect good things and see the Raiders winning eight this year.
17.) Chad Henne, MIA: I probably should give Henne and Matt Moore incompletes, but I put them here because I like them both. Henne's only had thirteen starts and the threw more INTs then TDs last year but I like his upside. Brandon Marshall should help. I think the Dolphins are going to be in that 7-9 win territory again this year, but Henne could turn out to be the long-term guy at QB. I don't see stardom, but I do see a useful player. The only downside is Tyler Thigpen is on the bench behind him and I think Thigpen can also be a very good player.
18.) Matt Moore, CAR: This is the guy to watch. I think Moore is going to be a star. After starting some games as a true freshman at UCLA, Moore ended up transferring to Oregon St. He had a good senior year but ended up going undrafted. He signed with Dallas as a free agent in the spring of 2007 and had an excellent preseason. He was cut in the last round of cuts as Dallas was looking to sneak him through waivers and onto the practice squad. It didn't work. Carolina claimed him the next day. He finished 2007 as the Carolina starter going 2-1 and was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the month in December. In the last game of the 2008 preseason he broke his fibula and missed the entire year. Moore got to start the last five games for the Panthers in 2009 after Jake Delhomme broke a finger. He went 4-1 and led the team to wins over Minnesota, the NYGiants and the Saints. He threw eight TDs against two INTs. I think Moore has huge upside. Keep an eye on him.
19.) Matt Cassel, KC: Matt Leinhart's now the backup in Houston and Cassel is the starter in KC. Talk about one guy turing a good break into a lot of money and the other blowing his career. This is the year for him to show that he really belongs. He's already made 30 career starts. It will be a make or break season for him. Chiefs fans should be praying he doesn't get hurt because Brodie Croyle is the backup.
THE SMORGASBOARD:
These guys are all different in style but exactly the same. They can be good at times but have limited upside. They are all capable, but not one is going to get his team to the playoffs and each is now more part of the problem than the solution. That pretty much covers it.
20-23.) Matt Hasselback, SEA; Kyle Orton, DEN; Vince Young, TEN; David Garrard, JAX
THESE GUYS SUCK:
I think the heading is self-explanatory.
24.) Alex Smith, SF: I don't really like putting Smith in this group, but the numbers suggest he belongs. He is 16-24 as a starter. He's thrown 37 touchdowns and 43 interceptions and has never had a passer rating above last year's 81.5. Yet Alex Smith is the most important player in the NFL. I wrote about it here in my gambling preview. The NFC West is going to be horrible. San Francisco should win five division games just by showing up. They also have a bunch of other patsies on the schedule. They have a great defense and good skill position guys on offense. If Smith is average they should win 9-10 games. If he's good they could win 13. If he's bad he'll never get another chance. Big season for Alex. Get some money down on SF as your SB darkhorse.
25.) Jake Delhomme, CLE: Let's get this out of the way up front. Teammates love Jake Delhomme. Okay. Got it. Shortly after throwing six interceptions in a home playoff loss in early 2009, the Carolina Panthers inexplicably signed Delhomme to a five year extension for $42.5 million. At the end of the year they cut him and will pay him almost $13 million not to be their QB this year. In steps Cleveland who signs Jake and pays him $7 million this year. Now for the good part. Carolina GM Marty Hurney apparently didn't put an offset clause in Delhomme's contract. This clause, common in NFL contracts, protects a team from paying a player the full guaranteed amount owed if he is playing for another team. With the clause Carolina could offset $7 million of the amount they owed and would only pay him about $6 million this year. But, nope, didn't get it in there. They will be paying the full amount. How does Hurney keep his job? And who the hell was Cleveland bidding against? Seriously. Delhomme threw eight touchdowns and eighteen interceptions last year. Sure Holmgren knows quarterbacks but this is all-around insanity. Jake Delhomme is going to make $20 million this year. What a country.
26.) Trent Edwards, BUF: Trent went to Stanford. I'm sure that will be useful when he is looking for gainful employment next year.
27.) Derek Anderson, ARI: How far have the Cards fallen since almost winning the Super Bowl two years ago? Derek Anderson? I love that Anderson went to the Pro Bowl one year when 23 guys pulled out and now it's on his resume and people point to it like that means he's good. He's not. Can't Kurt Warner pull a Brett Favre, come back and keep this team from losing 12 games? How bad must Matt Leinhart be that he couldn't win the job? Only questions in Arizona. It ain't gonna to be pretty.
Incomplete:
These guys haven't played enough to have a great sense of who they are, but here's a quick thought or two on each.
Matthew Stafford, DET: I think he'll be the real deal. Detroit might actually win six or seven games this year.
Mark Sanchez, NYJ: Based on Hard Knocks I like the guy and he seems like a great teammate. Unfortunately for Jets fans he needs to become a better quarterback. Fast. If I were a Jet fan I'd be a little worried.
Kevin Kolb, PHI: I think the Eagles did the right thing by giving him a shot. Fortunately he'll get the tender, loving care that Eagles fans give all their players. If he gets off to a bad start it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Right. After opening with the Packers at home they get three relatively easy games. We are going to find out a lot about Mr. Kolb in the first month. If they're 1-3 he's going into the Witness Protection Program.
Josh Freeman, TB: Lots of raw talent, no polish. His team stinks. It's gonna be a long couple years in Tampa.
Sam Bradford, STL: We started with Peyton Manning. He went 3-13 his rookie season. That seems like a good bet for Bradford and the Rams. I'm not sure he can then go 13-3 next year like Peyton did, but I think he has a chance to be not just good, but great.
And there it is. The starting QB class of 2010. Comments welcome. Enjoy the season.

How much you wanna go for babe?
Yeah, I couldn’t take that bet. The Ravens are my preseason Super Bowl favorites. If they can get some CBs healthy, that is….
malor
Your defense has declined, your secondary stinks! Linebackers are ok and D-line is great…your Offense, on paper is excellent!

You should bet something humliating
Like if Baltimore makes it, dtoddwin has to post a picture of him in a Ravens Jersey with a unibrow… and if they don’t, Mr. MaLoR has to take a picture with a tee shirt that says: “I’m one of Ben’s Bitches, and I love drinking his shots”

Steelers football is supposed to be 60 mins, recently it's been 45. The additional 15 are currently under construction.

Brett Favre #10
He holds every major quarter back record and threw 33 TD’s last year at 40 years old and he is a super bowl champion. How can you not have him in the top 3?

it’s ranking them going into the season.

He was 2nd in the MVP voting a year ago
Now he drops to the 10th best QB in the league?

Going into the season hurt...
Minus his favorite WR target, and with a tougher schedule… you could make a case for 10th I guess.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

Okay, maybe I should.....

I’d probably stick Rodgers ahead of BB right now because I don’t think you’d find too many GMs that would trade Rodgers for Ben. I know he should be ahead of Phillip Rivers.
Other than that:
Matt Moore – Probably underrated, but that’s speculation.
Jason Campbell – I like the kid, but you have him overrated.
But overall it’s a darn good list.
And in response to WARDANE33, this isn’t a past achievements list. This is a right now list and Favre right now isn’t better than many of the guys ahead of him on the list (though I’d put him ahead of a couple of guys on that list). The fact that he’s in the top 10 at almost 41 is amazing and a credit to how good he was and still is.
who else threw 33 TD's last year?

Peyton Manning...
Drew Brees threw 34… that’s it.

Favre's a Bum

TDs don’t make the MVP.
Plus, I don’t remember him throwing any against the Steelers last year. But I do remember an INT and a fumble or two…
like i said, he's a bum

BB is better than brees!

I love BB too, but let’s face it…Brees is simply awesome. His stats are far better than Ben’s (which isn’t easy to do) and he set the all-time record for completion percentage last year while throwing for 4,400 yards. The year before he threw for 5,000 yards. There’s not too many GMs that would trade Brees for Ben, but there’s a whole lot of GMs that would trade Ben for Brees.
Look where he plats and played!!!
He plays in a dome, 9 games a year where weather is not a problem..he also played in San Diego..Look where BB, brady and Rogers play! Stats my ass!

its ridicules to compare Ben to Brees. He is simply a better QB, needless to say he wouldnt survive on our offense and behind our O-line, We need a tough mobile QB wgich Brees is not. But over all Brees is a better passer than Ben, its simply a fact

you put Ben and Brees under the same conditions, in a dome, facing the same defense, with the same O-line and WRs, Brees will out pass Ben any day, hes more accurate, has a better touch on the ball, and can arguably throw the deep ball better…… dont get me wrong there is NO BODY i would rather have under center than Ben Roethlisberger

Brees also had very good teams in San Diego...Or you forgpt that? Merriman and LT in their prime..

While Ben had
JP, Farrior, Hamp, Smith, Faneca, and Hartings in their prime for the first one, and Holmes, Miller, Harrison Woodley, Ike, and Polamulu in thier prime.
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
ok he was good in San Diego but look at his stats they all jumped when he went to the saints, mainly because the saints are more passing than the chargers, especially with LT in his prime

Actually
Merriman was a rookie in Drew Brees last year in San Diego, and LT was the only decent offensive weapon that Brees had. He had a bunch of no name receivers, and the team was focused entirely around LT’s skills. Just saying, to be fair, Drew Brees teams werent that good in San Diego
Big Ben was the perfect Steeler QB and a perfect compliment to our running game and defense. I dont necessarily think that Big Ben has had less than Brees in his career, i think hes had more.
"I’m going to say Phillip Rivers. The first time Isacked him, I got up and did my little celebration. He started talking trash and saying, "Get back in the huddle" and woofin’. So I told myself that the next time he’d pay the price. The next time I got him, I took him on what I call the "rollercoaster." He met the ground and I stood over him. When he got up he was a little woozy. On the next play he threw the ball away before I could get him again. After I hit him that time he couldn’t say anything and I didn’t have to celebrate. what i basically said is that Brees wouldnt be a good QB in Pittsburg not as good as Ben anyways, but if Ben and Brees were in a QB competition on the “SAINTS” Brees would win out every time, because the saints thrive on a high powered passing attack in which case Brees is better in

I am really interested in hearing why this guy thinks Flacco is going to take a step back when he has shown no signs whatsoever of doing so. Joe has only improved from year one to year two, so what honestly makes you think he is going to regress especially after we totally revamped our passing attack? Should be rather humorous to read.
Its because your in the division.

You tell me exactly where he states why Flacco is going to take a step back. Get off my case, I have a right to ask.
I don't state it....
I said gut feel. I respect Flacco and what he’s accomplished. I stating an OPINION. sometimes opinions are wrong. I’m pretty sure they are going to use my list to determine who wins the division. They’ll go out and play the games and we’ll see.

That is not what I am asking about. I am asking why he thinks Flacco is going to take a step back when he has shown NO signs of doing so. Comments like that better have an explanation other than “gut feeling.”
Right.....
then how would anyone ever guess that someone would take a step back? Taking a step back would not be apparent, hence the term “back.” Consequently, you can only ever make the assumption that guys move forward get better. That is the logic you are using.
How about this, four of their first six games are on the road @Jets, @Bengals, @Steelers, @Pats. I think their secondary without Ed Reed sucks. There is going to be a lot of pressure on Flacco if they start 2-4 and teams put 8 guys in the box to stop Ray Rice. I don’t think he’ll handle it well.

The recently removed weight of his uni brow will throw off his pass vision and render him only capable of checking down to Ray Rice.

it is right for the wrong reason
the volume of the unibrow acted as awning, keeping glare out of his eyes and allowing him clearer vision. The removal will increase glare and cause him to have greater issues locating the receivers further down field. There also the possibility that the extreme loss of weight from the front of his head will cause his head tend to sag backwards. This could cause severe neck cramps unless immediate and extreme physiotherapy is undertaken.
Of course is this all based on the assumption that the unibrow is removed.

The main difference I’d make is putting Alex Smith in Jason Campbell territory. He has had a very similar situation with OCs and this is his first year with the same OC as the year prior. He has all the offensive weapons to succeed and last year he through six more TDs through INTs through his half or so season of play.

I hate the ravens
As much as anyone, but I think Flacco is the real deal. If their defense can withstand some good passing attacks by the steelers and the bengals, they will go to the superbowl. Also, their three headed monster of a running attack is arguably the best in the league. Now that I’ve said that, I’m gonna go wash my mouth out with soap! BTW, I put the QBs as:
1) Manning
1a) Brady
3) BB
4)Brees
5)Rodgers.
Based soley on body of work, with how many rings each has, it’d be Brady, BB, manning then Brees
GO STEELERS!!!!!
I hope you die in a fire, that was set accidentally, by someone you love.
-Jim Norton
This is a decent list...
A few I could see in different places, but who agrees 100% of the time?
McNabb I would bump to a cut below. I have seen him this preseason, he hasn’t looked comfortable in that offense at all. But with a bit more games with the blood pumping, I think on ability alone, he could still get it done with Cooley and Davis and one downfield guy to be named later (because they need to find one whether he’s on the roster or not… if I were them, I’d be trying to get Nate Washington in that supposed deal for Haynesworth).
Josh Freeman, assuming his hand is healthy and I don’t know that it is, could do more than expected. He has some raw talent, and I know he has little around him, but I think he’s got more than most people think. Kellen Winslow’s a bit of a punk at times, but he’s got skill. Freeman showed (at times) some good chemistry with Sammie Stroughter, they got better as the season went on even thought the numbers aren’t there really. I like Mike Williams, his time at ‘Cuse was bad highlighted by good play. Rejus Benn can be a beast, I’ve liked him since he was a freshman.
Trent Edwards… I shrug my shulders at you. Bill Walsh gave you his seal of approval coming out of college. Bill Walsh! You’re in a system that doesn’t fit you now, I don’t know bout you.
Thank you for welcoming comments. I should try that. :)

Are we saying talent?
1. Brady
2. Manning
3. Brees
4. Ben
Manning is an amazingly frenetic QB, but he has choked in big games. Say what you want about Brady, he never does. The game is never too big for him.
Ben Choked in SB XL, but not so bad the team couldn’t over come it. He had a great SBXLIII though, and I think that puts him up there in the top 4.
I only put Brees ahead of him because Brees has done it on two different teams, with two different coaches, and that is saying something.
Favre today is nothing that scares anyone. The Steelers — who were not very good last year — shut him down.
Sounds about right

You came in here with that comment to troll, that’s it. “He still put up 33tds and only 7 ints. I’ll take Favre leading me to a SB this year over Ben.” Did you miss the game where he threw one of the worst passes ever that cost his team the game? Across his body, across the field, right to Sharper’s chest.
Since winning that SB in 1997, Favre has gone 6-8, 26TDs and 23INts and a dozen fumbles. That includes one game with 6 interceptions and another with 4.
Taking an old, washed-up gunslinger over a young, precision passing QB is illogical.

I was right with you
… before the precision passing comment.
I wouldn’t call either Ben or Favre a precision passer. In some ways, Ben is just a bigger, younger version of Favre. So.. yeah, I’d take the younger QB today. You can argue about Ben in his prime vs Favre in his prime… but today…?
Only someone blinded by hate would take Favre. (Or Peter King… but that’s a whole ’nother story…)
63.3 comp% for his career (66.6 last year). If Ben retired right now he would be tied for 9th all time in completion % with Tom Brady.
"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"
by John Stephens on Sep 9, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Well... I guess it is a matter of interpretation
I know the BB fans are going to howl, but Completion percentage alone is not what makes me think of a precision passer.
Antwaan Randle El was 1 for 1 in the Superbowl… but that pass to Hines was not precise… Hines had to wait up for it to arrive. It was still a completion… but not a precise one.
A lot of Ben’s passes are not, IMHO, pinpoint. Of course, a lot of them come when he is running for his life… My point is just when I think pinpoint passer, I usually don’t think of Ben — or even of his style. He is, by his own description, a gunslinger. That is not really a precision passer.
When I think of a precision passer, I think of the Kurt Warners of the world with a three step drop and a timing pattern to a spot.
That’s not hating on Ben… that’s just saying that he is not what I would call a precision passer. Neither was Bradshaw, though…

there is a difference between precision (timing) and precision (accuracy). But can be very accurate in his throws, I’ve seem some balls placed in some tight places (TWSS). But he doesn’t rely a lot on timing in his throws.

We are just going to have to disagree
Also, comparing a guy who has thrown 25 passes to a guy who has thrown 2411 is not a good comparison. That is like saying a guy who gets 10 ABs in baseball and gets 3 hits for a .300 average is the same as Albert Pujols who has over 200 ABs and an average just over .300.

Yeah
I wasn’t really saying that ARE was a better passer… just trying to define my definition precision and why I don’t think pass completion percentage is an accurate predictor of precision…
But, yeah, we’re going to agree to disagree on this one…
What I hate about all of this is it makes it seem like I hate ben Roethlisberger… and I don’t. I put him in my top five QBs. Based on age, and talent, I would put him probably in the top 3. Based on our horrible OL, I put him at the top 1 of guys I want to see line up behind center in a black and gold uniform.
I just hate it when folks already have him in the hall of fame, or make it seem like he is head and shoulders above Terry Bradshaw… that’s walking on my fighting side…
But I like Ben. I am happy he got suspended, because I think it pulled his life out of a nose dive. But I am glad he’s coming back, and we didn’t trade him.
not persision???
wasn’t that throw to Tone in the SB percision? How about the last second TD to wallace VS Greenbay? I want to know how many QBs today can do that?

JFC,
This is actually getting ridicules (couldn’t resist). NCYSTEELERFAN: Let me give you a tip when you are making an argument or trying to support a position. It is better not to use a single play i.e. pass to Holmes, pass to Wallace, to defend your point.
As Johnny_S did above you can use stats or something else, but EVERY NFL QB has made a great pass at one time or another. Maybe not on a Super Bowl winning drive, but that isn’t the point if you are talking about a general category or skill.
Just like you killing Brees for the Minny game when he was league MVP and Super Bowl champ. One game where he didn’t play well is WAY overshadowed by what he did in the other 18.
I’m not necessarily disagreeing with your positions, but the defense of your positions is laughable. Do better.

not killing Brees for that game..I am making the point, that BB is a "percise" passer too
And he showed it! You guys make me laugh! The NFL is so biased against us and sucks up to the cowboys, Peyton, Bradt and now the Jets..At least I defend my guys while all the other media outlets constantly overlook us!

we like being over looked, why do you think everyone hates the cowboys, patriots, jets, and now saints (for me anyways), you want everyone to hate our franchise as well for being in the media (most people already do) me personally? idc let them hate, that means to me that our team is doing something right, but most people wants our team out of the media… anyways Ben CAN be percise but not always, there are sometime where he throws a stupid pick or holds on to the ball too long, i dont see Brees and Manning hanging on to the ball long at all and almost all of their passes are precise unless your name is Peyton Manning and its a playoff/superbowl game….. Ben can do something that all those other QBs cant hes a complete gunslinger, he rolls the dice per-say, he either makes big plays or big mistakes, fortunately most of the time their big plays. Honestly you cant compare Ben to Manning/Brees, to me there are 2 different categories of QBs gunslinger: Ben Roethlisberger, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and the precise coach on the field type QBs: like Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady

I've seen about 5 other QBs make passes like that
And I think you’re devaluing how tough of a catch that was for Wallace, considering he was a rookie.
Ben is not the best QB in the NFL, but he is the best QB for the Steelers (at least until his next screw-up).

OK
I want to know how many QBs today can do that?
All of them.
How many of them would I want to have the ball if my season is riding on it and they have to make that throw when it counts? Maybe five of them.
But any QB in the NFL could have made that throw… Precise? OK… it was thrown exactly where it should have been thrown. Perfect. And I would maybe even agree with your assessment…
Except, of course, that Ben said when he threw it, his first thought was that it was going to be intercepted… So, how precise was it exactly?
None of them
No one makes that pass but maybe Farve. You are crazy if you think all of the QBs could have made that throw in that situation. Ben claims he thought it was a pick when it threw it. That just shows how precise it was Mark. Any margin of error and its game over we have a red and white super bowl. But the pass was dead on perfect. You lose this argument, sir.

See
and this is where I differ. I think of Rex as a player’s coach except he is a players coach who knows his defence. The Jets may have been lucky to be in the playoffs but they did the best they could once they got there. I think they were maybe two injuries away from playing in the SB.
I have long been a supporter of underdog teams. It’s one of the reasons I started cheering for the Steelers before they began their winning ways. Going into last season the Jets were underdogs but in the end they found a way to win. IMO coaching was a big part of that success.

Geez MaLoR
You mustn’t want to get to the SB then.
I have my doubts that Favre (who I happen to enjoy watching and appreciate his contributions for 20 years in the league) will even be able to stay healthy for 1/2 the season. That’s not to say he isn’t talented, but the man has significant physical problems this year that he didn’t have to this degree last season.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
Not this year
That ankle is going to limit his throwing… and he lost some of his go to guys… I think Favre might not even see the playoffs this year
I can see that
You think the Ravens are going to win the division…? I disagree. I think the Steelers finish 11-5 and in the playoffs. But we have different biases working there. Time will tell…
But for all of your protestations about Ben and his proclivity to bathrooms stalls… I think if the Steelers would have offered a trade for Ben 8 months ago — straight up — for Joe Flacco… 90% of the Ravens fans would have been happy to take it. You guys might have something in Flacco. Ben is a proven winner.
As for the OP… Ranking QBs is always tricky.. what are we basing it on? Body of work? This year? The classic: “If I were starting a team today who would I pick?”
Body of work, Favre goes number 1. Based on this year? He might not make the top five. Starting a team today, he wouldn’t make the top 20.

Reading most of the comments, there seems to be a difference in opinion
Mainly because of what people define their Quarterbacks as.
There are football players who are quarterbacks and their are quarterbacks who are football players.
If I had to rate my top 5 Quarterbacks in terms of executing the technicalities of being an NFL Quarterback, my list would look like this:
1. Peyton Manning
2. Aaron Rodgers
3. Drew Brees
4. Tom Brady
5. Phillip Rivers
I dont think you can get more mechanically sound and efficient than Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers. When they have time and can relax, they are far away the best in the league at throwing the ball. Aaron Rodgers possibly has the best arm I have seen since I started watching football.
However, if it came down to who I think was a better football player who happens to play quarterback, my list would probably look like this:
1. Brett Favre
2. Ben Roethlisberger
3. Tom Brady
4. Peyton Manning
5. Drew Brees.
Do i think Big Ben is a better quarterback than Aaron Rodgers? No. Do I think he is a better football player than Aaron Rodgers? Yes.
To me theres a difference. My first list is based on mechanics, accuracy, throwing etc. The traits that make a good passer, but not necessarily a good football player.
The second list is obviously the guys who have been more successful, and that is because they are better football players. When times get tough, they find ways to win. They have the moxie. Other than Peyton Manning on that second list, they all were not the prototypical type of Quarterback.
Favre was a gunslinger who was immune to low self confidence.
Big Ben is a guy who ignores the easy way out and finds ridiculous ways of making big plays.
Tom Brady was a 6th round pick who worked exceptionally hard to get to where he is.
Drew Brees is about 5 inches shorter than most Quarterbacks with a weaker arm than most, yet he modelled his game to focus on accuracy rather than flash.
Football is a game of physicality, where the best athletes are expected to win, but for the most part, it comes to a combination of three things.
Heart, Passion and Mental Toughness.
The ability to never give up is a reason why Big Ben and Brett Favre have never had losing seasons. They have a passion for performing in the big moments. Mental Toughness and passion got Drew Brees his ring. Mental toughness and heart got Tom Brady to work his way up from a low ceiling draft pick into a future hall of famer.
Want to now another football player we all know. Hines Ward. He had no business in the eyes of many to come in and grab 10000yds for his career. But he did his business day in and day out. Hes not a better Wide Receiver than the likes of Anquan Boldin for example, but hes a better football player.
How many guys have had all the talent in the world, but werent a good enough football player to make it work?
So whats it for you. Football players who are Quarterbacks, or Quarterbacks who are football players? Depends on what you value I guess

I think that after this year you’ll put Aaron Rodgers in the top 5 football players list. In the Arizona playoff game, he never backed down and even with his defense floundering against the grocery bagger Warner, he led his team to plentiful touchdown drives to match Warner blow for blow.
I mean
the cards defense wasn’t much to speak of either
just sayin… gotta look at it both ways.

You do, and I wouldn’t deny that Kurt Warner was a better football player. He put up massive yardage in all of his superbowls, and the losses were not his fault. Kurt Warner v Aaron Rodgers is football player vs football player imo
Completely agree
Aaron Rodgers I think will come full circle this season. He has a bit more toughness to him than many give him credit for. Its not easy overcoming all those picks and still being in a position to win. Same goes for Ben vs Jacksonville in playoffs 07. A guy like Jay Cutler wouldve probably gone on to throw 5 interceptions after throwing 3.
That game was football heaven as far as im concerned
"I’m going to say Phillip Rivers. The first time Isacked him, I got up and did my little celebration. He started talking trash and saying, "Get back in the huddle" and woofin’. So I told myself that the next time he’d pay the price. The next time I got him, I took him on what I call the "rollercoaster." He met the ground and I stood over him. When he got up he was a little woozy. On the next play he threw the ball away before I could get him again. After I hit him that time he couldn’t say anything and I didn’t have to celebrate. I just wanted to look in his eyes and let him know that

Schaub and Romo too high, Eli should be higher
I may have put Eli in the top bracket, he has won a SB and is very good.
Romo is way overrated in my opinion.
Farve is right, he is on the down swing but still ahead of more than hallf the league
McNabb I have to see, he may have fallen further down.
Sanchez may move up this year.
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
Eli sucks period

you think Eli sucks? I would definitely put him in the top 10 QBs in the league and he’s a budding franchise star. Not every franchise QB comes into his own as quickly as Ben.
His QB rating has increased every year except for his fourth, and then he jumped up in his fifth and sixth year. Posting career highs in YPA, yards, TD, QB Rating, and completion %. I saw the light come on last year for Eli and if he continues his improvement into this year he will be a top 10 QB easily, close to edging in on the top 5 party.
He puts on his gameface for the playoffs too, in 07 when they won the SB by a “fluke” as some call it, he threw for 6 TD’s and 1 INT en route to beating Tampa, and media darlings Dallas, Green Bay, and New England. Those are all good teams. He was integral in the superbowl win, tossing 2 TDs and 1 pick.
I'd take Romo or Schuab over Eli
I think Eli is still riding the coatails of that historic win over the Pats in 07’. When Plaxico was taken away from him he wasn’t the same guy. He’s overrated in my opinion.

also shuab has never made the playoffs and romo has never performed in the playoffs. only qb i’d rather have for the steelers besides ben is eli. brees, manning, and brady would be clunkers behind our o-line
I
would never take eli. I don’t know what you see in the guy.

Hey
he gets all the props in the world for winning that SB.
Do it again, that is what legends are made of.

he’s already matched ben’s 05 playoff run and ben’s 08 superbowl performance. they both need to do it again in my book. i also didn’t say he was a legend. i used the phrase “budding franchise qb”
no he hasn't
he hasn’t matched that. Ben has 2, Eli has 1. Eli matches ben when he gets 2. You can’t give him 2 for 1. I see where you are going with it but no.

it’s not really that simple at all. eli manning hasn’t had the luxury of being carried in a superbowl. that one is discounted when comparing qb’s in my book. ben “won” 1, and eli “won” 1.
but BB was only 23..
you discounted the way he played in the playoffs..

read the rest of the thread. both eli and bb have had amazing playoff runs. im not knocking either. im not discounting anything. tann is discounting the stats eli has put up in the po’s.
BB is 8-2 in playoffs..
What is eli?

so, Eli is 4-3..
Eli is a “solid” QB, but he isn’t BB

Eli was only ok in that game
He made a couple of really good throws and that’s it. The entire defensive line deserved the MVP trophy for that game.
Ben did a whole lot more during his playoff run in 05’ than Eli did back in 07’.

Ben’s 05 run vs Eli’s 07 run:
Ben through 4 games: 7 TD, 3 INT, 2 rushing TD, and 803 yards.
Eli through 4 games: 6 TD, 1 INT, and 855 yards.
The two are extremely comparable, and I would never venture to say that Ben did a whole lot more for the 05 trophy than Eli did for the 07 trophy. If you take a closer look, Ben had an average QB rating of 97.8 and a CMP% of 61.8, while Eli had a QB rating of 102.2 and a CMP% of 62.3.
The two are close.
This year .....
will be the test for Eli. Deteriorating running game.

I agree about Romo and Eli
IMHO, the most overrated QB is Tony Romo. Favre may be on a down swing, but his down swing is better than a lot of QB’s up swings. Big Ben reminds me of Favre in a way and that’s not a bad comparison. Either way, it’s all opinion. I agree also about Eli being ranked higher on the original list. I am unsure about Carson Palmer. My gut says he’d be ranked lower, but I can’t decide how much lower.
Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford will be interesting to watch.

just think Eli has improved
and become a leader, and wins games
