Love/Hate Relationship with Rashard Mendenhall?
Sometimes reading the board I get a sense that there's a love/hate relationship for Rashard Mendenhall. Personally, I have nothing but love for the guy. I remember watching him carve defenses up in Illinois and was probably the only bright spot of the Rose Bowl for the team that year considering how good USC's defense was. So, I was more than surprised and excited when the Steelers drafted him.
His rookie season was forgetable for sure, but I also believe that was just a freak incident the injury. I'm sure if 10 other RB's took the same hit they wouldn't escape without some sort of injury. Last season, getting benched in the Bengals game was a bad mistake on his part. He should have been more prepared and focused for the game. I believe with him in the game we would have won easily even if the defense broke down towards the end like they did. For the rest of the season he excelled, maybe a bit streaky but our OL wasn't the best either. Plus Bruce Arians is a pass happy hog. His spinning could have been a bit of an annoyance to some people but it works for him and I don't see a lot of other backs in the league willing to try it.
People want to point to his tendeny to fumble as a knock on him but looking at some of the top backs in the league last year Mendenhall was about average with them. Maurice Jones-Drew, Ryan Grant, and Pierre Thomas all had 1 lost fumble. Cedric Benson didn't have any. Mendenhall, Ray Rice, Chris Johnson, and DeAngelo Williams all had 3 lost fumbles. Did they come at bad times? Probably. The fact is they get magified because of Mendenhall having to carry a ball around during pre-season and having players try to knock it out. They want to label him as someone with soft hands when he's a really good ball carrier not to mention with more opportunities can become a great reciever from the backfield. I think you will see a lot of screens in the first 4 weeks.
Anyways, last season he broke out and had some great games. It just seems like a lot of fans don't have trust in him still. He's almost expected to go down with injury or some how Redman out plays him when he gets his shot on short yardage or the goal line.
So, am I right? Is there a love/hate relationship with Mendenhall? Or am I just crazy from the lack of sleep right now?
This guy is only 23 years old with so much more upside it's ridiculous.

My only issue with Mendenhall is his insistence on spinning so often rather than lowering his shoulder and fighting for additonal yardage. Maybe the shoulder injury he suffered two years ago as at the root of this, who knows. His reputation as a fumbler is overblown imo. He’s not a fumbler. The way he carries the ball does make me nervous at times, but so would Rivers throwing motion if i was a bolts fan.

If there is a perception (not sure there is)
that he is a fumbler it is most likely based on how he holds the ball. If he continues to hold the ball the way he does it can become a problem.
Spin moves are fine in the right timing. That’s his style. It works for him. I’ve seen times where his spin move got a ton more yards than lowering his shoulder would and then I’ve seen times it would have been better to lower the shoulder. The latter is looks weak.

Hopefully in time he learn when to spin and when to lower the shoulder
and become more effective at and with both moves
Things can always be worse....

I love Mendy
but at the same time, I do get nervous when he spins again while having the ball not tight to his body but at the end of his outstretched arm. And that happens way too often. So in some way, you might be right with the love-hate relationship.
That said though, three lost fumbles isn’t as bad as people and the media might want to make it out to be… But you also have to keep in mind that some of the backs you listed had much more carries than Mendenhall (242), in Johnson’s case over 100 more, Jones-Drew (312), Grant (282), Rice(258), and Benson(301) also had more by an average of almost 50. Aside from that though, I agree that the problem might not be as bad as it is made out to be. But his running style (the spinning and swinging the ball around) sure magnifies the worries people have.
Both good points
As I wrote the original post I forgot about reading an article the other day about Mendy talking about his running style(spinning) etc and how he does hold the ball out at times. I do agree that there are points where he should just lower his shoulder to fight for the extra yardage but at the same time I don’t want to take away his style of running.
It’s kind of a bad mix when as your last two backs before Mendenhall you have Willie Parker who relied on his speed and then Jerome Bettis who was a major power back. Mendenhall is a little in between though definitely not as strong as Bettis but people still want to see him run fast and break tackles. Which is understandable because he has the capability.
Strengths and Improvement Opportunities
Strengths:
- Speed, he gets up to speed very quickly and hits holes that he sees quickly
- The spin move is nasty to Dbacks in the open field
- Can catch the football in the open field and make people miss
- Good blocker in the passing game
Improvement Opportunities:
- Will not use that bulk and heft to push the pile.
- Vision is suspect, will hit wide open holes, however, he predetermines where he’s going to run. For example, in the Panthers game he cut right into the LB who was about to be taken out by Pouncey if had just cut inside Pouncey. He previously gained 6 yards doing the same thing and the Panthers MLB realized it.
- Position of the football while running, doesn’t protect the ball when in traffic, it hasn’t turned into a fumbling problem, but he’s too loose with the ball
- Mental mistakes, for example ran out of bounce in the Panther’s game and came back in and tried to catch a pass, which resulted in a penalty.
Good Post!
I will say that when he got here he was a bit overlooked. He was young and not yet familiar with the steeler way (does anyone remember texting Ray Rice before the game with the ravens to brag). He has learned thanks to Daddy Tomlin always putting him in his place. With a new center he will have a better year and hopefully he can grow into one of our core players off the field

Forgot about that
Good recall.
"The Steelers drafted guys who were bigger, stronger and faster than I, but they never found one who could take my job away from me." Jack Lambert
It's not so much that I don't like him...
I just prefer the straight-up, downhill-running, linebacker-leveling, power-running back v.s. the quick-slashing, finesse running back. I know we’ve had Parker for the last few years, and he’s not a power back, but I feel Bettis left a void. He was your “typical” gritty Pittsburgh running back. He’s a guy that punished the defense.
However, the line hasn’t been what it once was either. Zone blocking? Ugh. How about we maul the guys on the other team instead of trying to confuse them? Other than Kemoeatu, we haven’t had guys who excel in run blocking since the departure of Faneca. Foster and Pouncey are promising, but Foster got beat out for the starting job by Essex, who is better at pass blocking. Pouncey can get some push off the ball, so we should start seeing some lanes.
Maybe it’s just me, but it always seemed like the Bus got positive yardage. With Mendenhall, you just never seem to know. He may gain 8 yards on one play, lose 2 on the next, and gain 2 the next time he touches the ball.
Plus, he makes me nervous when he carries the ball high, especially when he spins, because it looks like it could pop out if he hits a defender.
I know I’m guilty of blaming Mendenhall for short yardage failures, and maybe some of it is justified, (like when he tries to bounce the play outside the tackles and loses yardage instead of leveling his shoulder and trying to fight for a yard or two inside) but the line doesn’t always open the running lanes and has gotten downright dominated in some cases.
So, in short, I think Mendenhall will get love as long as he churns out yardage, gets first downs, and doesn’t turn the ball over. He has the talent to be a top running back in the game, but he has to improve a few aspects of his game, while the O-line has to be able to give him lanes to run.
Nice post
You have to realize as well, before Willie Parker’s leg injury he had averaged something like 1,200 yards and he did have some fairly long runs so we’re expecting that of Mendenhall as well. Rashard was rather limited touches in pre-season, rightfully, so that he would be fresh for the season. I think you’ll see him get in a nice groove when he’s consistently in the lineup. Especially with Dixon in having two major running threats I only like Rashard’s chances even more.
Completely agree with your last sentence, there are aspects of his game that can be improved but the O-Line has to give him a chance to make plays as well. Adrian Peterson blew up the league but there are still aspects of his game that he can improve such as fumbling. The only reason people don’t talk about him being a fumbler(well up until last season) is because he scores so many touchdowns.
Experience
Once he get’s another season as being “the guy,” I think he will be an elite RB in this league. He could be critical in the first 4 games running and catching. It will be interesting to see how much the first 4 opponents stack the box with 8 men.
I think other teams having to prepare for an unknown QB will be a good thing early on.
They may think we are going to try and run, run, run and we all know with BA, we could do something completely opposite and come out with a bunch of play action and designed passes which if effective could really open up the run game.
I sure hope so.
Go Steelers!

I LOVE to HATE
The way he carries the ball in open space. He’s gonna continue to fumble as long as he has that tendency to carry it low and wide.
I wasn’t pleased because we didn’t win - Mike Tomlin (after the 2009 week 2 loss to Chicago).
Love for Mendy
he is young and he will learn from his mistakes. The hit from Ray is probably in his mind and doesnt want to drop his shoulder. Besides we have Redman on the team
Franco made that play because he never quit on the play. He kept running, he kept hustling. Good things happen to people who hustle."
Always like Mendenhall's promise...
Even before he played last year and a few were ready to write him off. Although, admittedly, I do hold on to hope for too long sometimes.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.
No hate for Mendy here
Having said that, I would like to see Dwyer developed to the point where we can have two quality RBs to alternate so they can both be kept fresh with Redman and Moore (or their equivalents) for blocking and for passing situations.

Mendy is good
and Redman will make him even better. If these guys get decent blocking, they’re gonna run around and through lots of folks.
If is the key
And It looks like this year’s line should be a better run blocking line. I think Mendy and Redman will have a great year once BB returns and makes defenses play honest.
Nice article
I think you hit it on the head; we like Mendenhall, but with reservations.
The first time I saw him, it’s when USC was putting a hurt on Illinois, but the Spin Doctor was putting a hurt on the USC rushing defense. Probably as dominant a performance as I’ve ever seen at the college level.
It has yet to fully translate to the NFL. I think it will. He IS young, and with experience, could well turn into the complete premiere back we’re hoping for.

Im not sure about Love/Hate
My issue with Mendenhall is I just want him to realise his potential. Mendenhall has all the tools to be one of our greatest running backs in Steeler history, yet he has momentary lapses in concentration when he holds the ball loose, or continues to spin, or spins for no apparent reason. I really wish he would lower his pads a bit more and use the strength that we all know he has
If he can find the right football smarts in terms of knowing when to spin, when to lower his pads etc, I think he could be a dominant force in the running game. He has all the tools, just needs to mature a little and “slow down”
"I’m going to say Phillip Rivers. The first time Isacked him, I got up and did my little celebration. He started talking trash and saying, "Get back in the huddle" and woofin’. When he got up he was a little woozy. On the next play he threw the ball away before I could get him again. After I hit him that time he couldn’t say anything and I didn’t have to celebrate. I just wanted to look in his eyes and let him know that

Good point
I think he is finally realizing his potential. He’ll have all the chances in the world to do it this season there is no doubt about that. He is our third down back now so he has to be aware of the situation he’s in.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MENDENHALL'S STYLE OF RUNNING, SON.
HIS JOB IS TO GET YARDS WHETHER SPINNING, LOWERING HIS SHOULDER, OR DEFYING GRAVITY AND LEVITATING OVER WOULD BE TACKLERS.
PEOPLE IN THIS TOWN TEND TO ROMANTICIZE BETTIS AND HIS “3 YARDS AND A CLOUD OF DUST” ROUTINE. THE FACT IS THAT THE FAT MAN AVERAGED LESS THAN 4 YARDS A CARRY FOR HIS CAREER.. I REMEMBER THE PRESS POO-PAHING BETTIS AFTER A CLEVELAND GAME WHERE HE GAIN 70 SOMETHING YARDS ON OVER 30 CARRYS. THEY CALLED HIS PERFORMANCE “GRITTY” WHEN IT FLAT OUT SUCKED. ALL FATTY DID WAS HEAVE HIS POT BELLY INTO THE LINE AND FALL FORWARD.
MENDENHALL IS A BETTER OVER ALL BACK THAN BETTIS EVER WAS. IN BLOCKING, CATCHING THE BALL, AND (((gasp))) RUNNING THE BALL..
With that gasp...

Some more thoughts about the running game
- With Redman as our short yardage back I’m hoping to see a good amount of formations featuring both him and Rashard. I know there have already been moments where they have been in the backfield together and it’s been successful so I’m really hoping to see that formation a lot as it gives a bunch of different options on a single play.
“Dixon hands off to Redman, no it was a fake! Swing pass to Mendenhall and he takes it 56 yards for the score!”
Just sayin’.
- How will Moore be trickled into the running game? Is it to give Rashard a breather from time to time or bring him in for blocking purposes? I’ve really not heard a lot how Moore will be used this season, or what exactly his role is. So I’d love to hear some opinions.
- (Correct me if I’m wrong) Does anyone else find it odd that Mike Tomlin said that he plans to not over work Mendenhall at the beginning of the season yet he’s one of the players who has to step up big while Roethlisberger is out? I mean, I would understand that if Ben was playing but I don’t think Moore and Redman given a significant amount of carries could produce what Rashard can. If this is the case as well, how many carries will be viewed as a good load of work for him? Willie Parker carried the ball 320+ times in 2007 before he was injured so I would assume they’re aiming for the solid 300 carries or less mantra.
It's wise not to overwork him
Mendy needs to touch the ball at least 20 times every game, but we don’t need to run him into the ground like we did Willie.
The only difference is that Willie was a speed back, which means he wasn’t meant to carry the ball as many times as he did without sharing carries. I remember the last game of the season back in 06’ when we ended the Bengals playoff hopes with that late slant to Santonio. I think Willie ended up with like 37 or so carries on the day and I remember thinking to myself that anything over 25 was way too much for a back like him (which is why he became so injury prone).
Mendy actually looks like he can take the pounding of a 16 game schedule by himself. If I had to compare him to anybody, it would be Ricky Williams (although he doesn’t run as physical as Ricky) mainly because of body type. But even the best backs wear down. And it’s not like Moore isn’t a good backup, so it’s beneficial for us that they share carries.

Dixon hands off to Redman, no it was afake! Swing pass to Mendenhall and he takes it 56 yards for the score!
The way they are going to stack the line the first 4 games, this will be a very effective scenario. Let’s hope BA with his lack of vision can figure this out as early as this weekend instead of asking DD to try to pass downfield. Swing passes to one RB after a play action fake to the other could be very effective.
formations with redman and Mendy
would be very effective for passing to Heath I should think.

Mendenhall is young and talented
But he’s not Jerome Bettis and in The Bus, we’ve created this mythical legend at running back, a guy who always ran straight-ahead and never got knocked backwards.
Is it true? Of course not. Jerome got knocked on his ass a time or two in his day. He liked to dance a little, as well, and he fumbled the ball at times, including two in very crucial moments late in playoff games and had to be rescued by his teammates.
Bottomline is he wasn’t a perfect running back, but he was perfect for what Pittsburgh fans want in a running back, and even though the league is trending towards more of a quick, slashing type of running back, we will always think that the big, straight ahead backs are better even though that isn’t always the case (see Redman love/love relationship.)
By all indications, Mendenhall will be a really good running back in this league. I don’t know what his career stats will ultimately be, but no matter how good he is, Steelers fans will always be looking for that big, burly, straight-ahead running back to try and replace him, even if it’s just in short-yardage situations.
Anytime there is a back of that type excelling in college, well, just listen to the talk shows or read the message boards. Steelers fans will be calling for the team to draft that back (see Lendale White.)
Just wait until Pitt’s Henry Hynoski is eligible for the NFL draft.
