OT Tony Ugoh available

I noticed that the Colts let go of Tony Ugoh, who was the 42nd pick in the '07 draft.  He'd be an improvement in the pass protection area over existing back-ups, having protected Manning's blind side.  He was criticized for poor run blocking in Indy, but that blame should be spread around.  He'd be a good back-up upgrade for the Steelers and a good insurance against another let-down by Starks or disappointment by Adams.  He does have an undisclosed foot injury, but that doesn't sound serious.  Thoughts?

Something happened to him in Indy!?

I have no idea what happened to him in Indy but he started his rookie year and looked really good and something happened to him last year. He didn’t start and now released. He would be a guy you take a chance on from where I sit. Maybe he just needs a mental break and change of address?

Who do you cut for him?

That’s always the tricky part.

And cut our best Tackle?!?

He’s just even better at running back, that’s all.

Leftwich

Either Dixon or Batch are going to carry the load in the first four games and establish themselves as a credible back-up for Big Ben. Leftwich is now out of contention and can be cut.

I’d rather cut Batch than Lefty. Of course, we cannot do that until Lefty is healthy

I bet he was easy to

give instructions to in the huddle Tony, “u go that way and block that guy.”

Yes, I did. But somebody had to. Doesn’t seem fair that everyone else gets all the fun.

Sorry to say

Unless he was some sort of locker room cancer, if the Colts cut him, he’s almost certain to be done, or at least never be a starter again. He wasn’t making squat, so they essentially cut him for a roster spot. If they thought there was any chance of him coming back and playing well, they wouldn’t have done that. They didn’t even put him on IR like we did with Colon.

another possibility...

Actually, I read that the Colts, in waiving him due to injury rather than cutting him, are actually hoping that no one else is willing to pick up his salary while he is injured, so that they can then put him on IR without paying him so much. If he were totally expendable, they’d have just cut him. This implies they still see value there. I think I have the logic right.

by ec on Sep 9, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Cheaper than the minimum NFL salary? I don’t know if there’s some sort of loophole that would allow them to pay him less than the $690k he was scheduled to make this year, but if they cared about him at all they wouldn’t put him at risk to save $100k.

Since hes not eligible for PS: injure Ugoh (slightly) by crashing into him with a Yugo, stash him on the IR and see what he does in training camp next year. Low risk, high reward possibly.

Yeah, I remember when he was in the draft, I was hoping the Steelers would get him.

Maybe the Colts gave up too soon on the guy, unless he has some kind of chronic injury.

Wish he was cut awhile ago

So that we couldve picked him up instead of Flozell Adams

"I’m going to say Phillip Rivers. The first time Isacked him, I got up and did my little celebration. He started talking trash and saying, "Get back in the huddle" and woofin’. So I told myself that the next time he’d pay the price. The next time I got him, I took him on what I call the "rollercoaster." He met the ground and I stood over him. When he got up he was a little woozy. On the next play he threw the ball away before I could get him again. After I hit him that time he couldn’t say anything and I didn’t have to celebrate. I just wanted to look in his eyes and let him know that
