"I was glad we broke his nose"
Is this football? I'm open to the discussion. The quote in the headline is a statement by Ravens coach John Harbaugh, referring, of course, to the play where Haloti Ngata "accidentally" (according to the article) swung his arm at Ben Roethlisberger's head. Football is a violent sport, there's no doubt. But is it a sport where we're "glad" when opposing players are hurt?
The full quote:
"He’s a Miami guy," Harbaugh said. "He’s a tough guy. He had the broken nose. I was glad we broke his nose and then I was very impressed that he played through it. Obviously, you can throw very effectively with a broken nose. He proved that."
Sure, maybe that's the attitude you have to have to be a tough-minded coach in the NFL. But then maybe one of his players makes a reckless flying hit, direct to the helmet of a defenseless player. Perhaps one of his players decides to spit in the face of another player. Or maybe the player is so dirty, and encouraged to be so, that an opposing player finally loses it. Or a tough-minded coach decides to stick his knee out to impede the progress of an opposing player. I'm wondering if the attitude is really good for the league overall. More to the point, my own interpretation of what it takes to be the greatest isn't actually having the desire to injure players on the other team, but instead being able to beat the other team with all of their best players on the field.
Of course, I want the Steelers to be more physical, to be tougher, to be more scrappy than the other team. But sometimes in the NFL I think the words "tough" and "scrappy" are used in place of "dirty." I've always felt like the Steelers were a team that were tough without having to be dirty, and that our coaches were personification of that. I don't think I'd want Coach Tomlin out there saying he was glad another player got hurt. I love sports because they show us the amazing things humans can do. Unfortunately they often show the dirty and shameless things humans can do, and I doubt if it's a good idea for a head coach in the NFL to be saying he was "glad" an opposing player was injured.

Suspend Harbaugh!
“I was glad we broke his nose” "We’re going to try to get after him like we always do," "Obviously, you can throw very effectively with a broken nose. He proved that." There is no place in football for a thug like Harbaugh. I always just thought there were a couple of thugs on the Ravens, but I didn’t realize the head coach was encouraging his players to take cheap illegal shots against players. This is the same coach who said the attempted decapitation of Heath Miller should not have been a fine? Is he going to instruct his team to do more than illiegal shots to the head? Maybe some more of the ankle twisting while the Ravens have someone in a pile. First Thug Suggs with his stupid World War III comments, surprised he can count that high, but this is football there is no place for these guys, they should be fined and suspended. Where’s Baderson and Badell?
We have some mean football players. And it has helped us do rather well in the NFL. You guys have your fair share of “thugs” as well. Harrison in the last Superbowl punching and throwing a guy to the ground far away from the play. Then him saying he is going our there to hurt people. Ward intentionally leading with his helmet to block Ed Reed then jumping up and down like a school girl with joy for doing what he did while the play was still going on when he could have blocked someone else to extend the play.
This is football. These are huge men with short tempers. You want to hit people hard and you want to let them know what’s up. If you don’t like what Ngata did, then tell your O-Line to man up and not let him destroy them like he has been all season.
"My youngest brothers think I'm a dorky older brother, I can't tell jokes because, 'I'm not funny.' They're much more street smart than I am. They can say whatever they want, cause 'they're funny.' I can understand
how a player could, in the heat of battle, “injure” as opposed to “hurt” a player, to use Harrison’s terminology. I can even understand how they could get so worked up that they would do it deliberately, which is why I’m not a fan of trash talk. But I have trouble understanding a coach who could publicly admit that he was glad that a player of his took an illegal shot at a player on another team, especially one who had so sanctimoniously declared to the press shortly before that game that his players knew how to play legally, and the Steelers needed to take lessons from his team, or words to that effect. That takes a lot of gall. I trust that he won’t complain about any hits on his players this Saturday, legal or illegal…

Don’t get me wrong, I was upset when I heard Harbaugh say that. He usually isn’t one who draws negative attention to himself and this team. We are one of the class acts organizations in the league, and so is Pittsburgh.
But this shit gets heated everyone. This is the 8th time we have seen each other in the last 3 seasons, this is turning out to be maybe the best rivalry in NFL history with how these two teams are setup for the present and the future. Whoever loses this one is done for the season. We talk about all this respect for each other, but deep down inside Balt hates Pitt and Pitt hates Balt.
How much did all of you enjoy McGahee getting carted off the field in 2008? Don’t anyone here bullshit me and say they didn’t because I still to this day see many of you bringing up that hit and how awsome it was. Plenty of people on this blog have made fun of seeing Willis stiff as a board, and you all know it. Don’t you want to see that happen again, and especially against one of our more important players?
Some of you guys are getting too worked up about this.

McGahee is a talented guy and I don’t want to see anyone have their career on the field ruined. This is football. None of this stuff even compares to the kind of antics we used to get from Jack Lambert(greatest Steeler ever). Let the boys play and lose their temper sometimes, it’s a rough game and I love it when they talk trash about the other team and players. It shows passion and fuels the rivalry. I always played better when I was pissed off at the other team. The refs and the new rules are dumbing down the sport. Bring back the 70’s I say. Let the boys play!

Ward was trying to get medical attention for the purple vagina bleeding on the field. You are too young to realize this but Jerry Rice and John Taylor were pretty similar to Ward when it came to crack back blocks. They devastated people, it was a staple of their offense.
Ward did block two people on that play, and knocked one of them out, be glad he stopped before he wrecked the rest of your defense.
Harrison blocked the guy to the ground, when the idiot tried to get back up he got knocked back down. A hand is the least Harrison could have hit him with, he is lucky James restrained himself.
What does the play of our line have to do with the fact that Ngata made illegal contact? You talk tough “You want to hit people hard and you want to let them know what’s up.” but then you cry when it happens to your own team, typical hypocrite.

Time to shoot that high horse you're ridin around on (all meant to be taken literally)
First of all, it was quite clear that Ngata didn’t intentionally break Ben’s nose and he explained, on the record, that it came after a swim move to shed a blocker. I frankly don’t think Ngata shouldn’t have been fined. It wasn’t malicious. He wasn’t even flagged. Accidents like this happen when a 350 lb man is trying to take down a 240 lb one.
Suspend Harbaugh? Jesus. I won’t waste my time responding with an original thought so you get a cliche: this is a man’s game. People get hurt and in fact try to hurt others within the confines of the rules. The comment was a bit ill-advised, but there’s no need to soil your Depends over it. Harbaugh made his comments in the context of praising Ben’s play.
Also. This quote from the article above is ludicrous: “I’ve always felt like the Steelers were a team that were tough without having to be dirty.” Considering that Wines Hard is on your team, this is easily the most naive thing I’ve read all day. Harrison certainly doesn’t deserve the fines he’s gotten this year but that fella’s no saint either.
Sheesh. I would have expected those comments to get Steelers fans fired up, not inspire an innernet whine festival.
"Sheesh. I would have expected those comments to get Steelers fans fired up, not inspire an innernet whine festival."
First of all ravens fan, you can just kiss our asses.
Second of all, you need to understand that we saw those hits in the ravens game through the spectrum of our best players getting crucified for no reason by the player safety witchhunt. You ravens fans got to sit there and laugh while we were being told how dirty our team was for making football plays. While listening to harbaugh talk about how his guys follow the rules.
The rule as I understand it is ‘no contact to the QB’s head by defenders’. Are we wrong? If so please illuminate us. I know I’m not a rules expert, but I’ve seen flags for FAR less this year.
Finally, we all know Ward isn’t a dirty player, so you can take your opinion back to the charm city and throw it in that rank harbor where it belongs.

Harrison “wasn’t even flagged” for several of the hits he was fined for. But fined he was. In fact… the rules your coach boasted that his players “made the adjustment to” were in place when Ngata hit Ben (intentional? Probably not…. but no where in the rules does it say a blow to the head is only flagged when it’s intentional….. so save that sunshine for someone else’s skirt; your argument does not hold water.) I would have rather seen the ref’s do their job and flag that play…. and award the 15 yards that your Ngata gave away.
Keep the fine… throw the damn flag.
As for Hines Ward…. you wish you had a WR that could block like him.

The focus here is on the COACH, champ. If you can name a single instance since 1969 that a Steeler coach has gone on record with a similar comment, please do so. I agree, this is a man’s game. It’s a shame your coach doesn’t seem to know that the MEN do their talking on the field, where his team has zero wins against Ben Roethlisberger during his tenure. Harbaugh’s most recent accomplishments include an incredible display of how creatively he can place his foot in his mouth while not winning Super Bowls.

Go back to Baltimore Beatdown where you belong. Your coach was out of line and if I were a fan of your team, I would be angry about what he said. It’s one thing for fans to speak up (who gives a crap what we think), but a coach? A coach is supposed to lead by example. Your coach is a whiny little bitch that needs to shut up.

I can't understand the talk about Hines being a dirty player
Nobody expects to get knocked so hard by a WR. Many other WR’s put minimum effort into anything once they know the ball isn’t coming their way. Being a dirty player to me is not playing within the rules, like the headlock on Slacco last week. Hines just plays hard, like our whole team does. Since they implemented the Ward rule last year, has he been flagged for this? It seems to me that people define being “dirty” for Hines a lot different that they do for other players in the league. I feel the hate towards Hines comes from the same place as the hate for the Steelers, jealosy.
This is a persistant storyline about Hines, but I’ve pretty much watched every play he made over his career and I just don’t get it. What am I missing?
by Norcal_Roxy on Jan 12, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Unbelievable
This drives me crazy anytime I hear someone refer to Hines as a cheap shot artist or whatever. Get real people! Finaly a receiver comes along who does his job correctly and actually finishes off his downfield blocks instead of pussying out like almost every other receiver in the league and people like you refer to him as a cheap shot artist or dirty player. Come on! He plays the game and his position like it’s supposed to be played.

agreed here too.
Although Harbaugh’s comments may be more towards respect for Ben playing through injury than celebration for Ngata breaking his face.
That's what I thought, too.
It was a bizarre compliment if you ask me. It just doesn’t seem like Harbaugh thinks things through before he says them. To an extent, a lot of us are guilty of that from time to time. But, he IS among the league league leaders in “Uh, that’s not what I meant by that” moments.

doesn’t mean he has to like the guy. I would think that the fact that he’s never beaten Ben in his entire career as a head coach might lead him to have a bit of a resentment.

Also I hadn’t really had much to think of Harbaugh before this year, either positive or negative. But after his ‘tsk, tsking’ of the Steelers on that Sunday night game interview, his subsequent foot in mouth comments that pissed off his own fans after they lost this game, and now this — I have to say I’d be glad if we broke his nose.

btw, john stephens...
Deebo said he didn’t mind hurting people but didn’t want to injure anybody. Harbaugh and BB are cool. Harbaughs comments were taken out of context. It’s in the post-gazette.
There's an interview with Harbaugh
on Steelers.com, where Harbaugh was asked about the comment and said in effect “C’mon, guys, I was kidding, I was laughing when I said it.” This makes sense to me. It was still a stupid thing to say. He was supposedly trying to show how tough Ben is and how much he admires that, and he would have done so successfully if he had just left out that one little statement. Which just shows that he doesn’t think carefully enough before he speaks. And still doesn’t get past the “our guys know how to tackle properly, too bad the Pittsburgh guys can’t figure it out” statement. Whether you love Tomlin’s style or not (I do, but I’m sure he isn’t everybody’s cup of tea) he says very few things in public that comes back to haunt him, and so far at least, NEVER about a team or player other than his own. I expect the local press wishes it were otherwise, but Steeler Nation can be very grateful!

Harbaugh was asked about the comment and said in effect "C’mon, guys, I was kidding, I was laughing when I said it."
I don’t buy that for a minute. What else would he be able to say? “Yeah, I meant it?”
One of the great disappointments of a football game is that the cheerleaders never seem to get injured.
"What else would he be able to say? "Yeah, I meant it?""
Of course he meant it. He just didn’t mean to say it out loud.
My summary is:
Oh well? What if that broken nose was on purpose? I know ngata is a freakish athlete, and I thought I read somewhere he knows martial arts. And I’m sure harbaugh and the ravens would do that if they thought they could get away with it. But so what? Are we going to hate the ravens more? Is there even one more ounce of hate that I could shoehorn into my heart for the purple gang? No there isn’t, so screw it. Who cares.
"I don't want to injure anybody," James Harrison said. "But I'm not opposed to hurting anybody."
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
Did you watch the video of the press conference where he said that?
No? Then shut up until you go watch it.
It was said in a humorous situation, with a humorous tone, and he was freaking praising Roethlisberger in the sentence. You can definitely find better reasons to hate us than this, because we certainly have much better reasons to hate you.
exactly
I see no reason to blow this out of proportion. Harbaugh’s known Ben from back in college – or longer than any of us Steelers fans knew he existed. Roethlisberger was one of the first to come forward and say it was nothing.
I think there’s a man law that states if you know another man for almost a decade, you have the right to be a smart ass about it when they have their nose broken.
i think it's a great way to torment baltimore babies
and demonstrative of the difference between the franchises. I think far more egregious was the Sunday night interview with Harbaugh where he got on his high horse and patronizingly implied that the Steelers weren’t yet able to figure out how to play within the new hitting rules… then thirty minutes later his team were putting on a clinic on how to break every one of them.

not everyone’s going to watch the press conference. They’re going to read the quote and wonder if your coach has any class. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t.
I don’t exactly think Harbaugh and Roethlisberger are what you would call “friends” though. Let’s face it- your coach has that monkey on his back until he can actually beat Ben, and he does have the unfortunate habit, especially this year, of letting his mouth get him in trouble. Even with his own fans. Until recently I didn’t really have an opinion of Harbaugh, but his performance this year just makes me glad we have a class act like Tomlin and not a ringless, sanctimonious clown like Harbaugh.
You do have much better reasons to hate Pittsburgh, I agree. We’re the class of the AFC North and you’re the wannabes.

This is what he said. He never said C’Mon.
Go back and listen to it, you’ll see it was in humor. It was in response to a humorous question and I was laughing. It was tongue in cheek, it was fun. I took the opportunity to praise him for how tough he is. I go back a long way with him. I’ve known him since he was a sophomore in college. I have tremendous respect for him. He knows we try to be physical, Pittsburgh plays physical and that’s the way we want to play. But it was tongue in cheek.

I was mad at first
But then my wife suggested that any excuse for a guy with Bens looks to have a little work done is a blessing in disguise.
I had to laugh at that. It’s his nose – not a concussion, knee, or shoulder. He can play with the nose and if anything that gives him a legitimate QB look for his bust in the HOF, assuming he keeps up his play for a number of years and makes it. Look back at the QB’s faces from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Getting a broken nose used to be part of the job description. Only the kickers had straight noses back in the day.
Yeah. Just look at Ernie Stautner...

Meh?
The quote was taken out of context and Roethlisberger even said so. He’s known Harbaugh going back to his Miami of OH days and they talk before every game when we play the Ravens. I just took it as someone who knows Ben giving him a hard time because a broken nose would be an improvement on his looks. I’d guess Roethlisberger was laughing about it like Harbaugh was laughing when he said it in jest.
No bulliten board material here. It’s nothing like “the bounty” they used to have out on Ward.
cmon it's ravens week get into it man
bulletin board material is anything that will get the players AND the fans ready to rumble. And personally I don’t want to have a laugh with the ugly flying rats. save the peace-making for after the game.

Ravens-Steelers
Wow!!
This is the most animated post I have read since the Pastries-Steelers game.
Truth be told. Steelers and Ravens are the same type of team in different cities. Their records and stats show it clearly. The rivalry is stuff legends are made of.
I even like the fact that Suggs and Harbaugh are giving the Steelers stuff to put on the bulletin board in the training facility. This will be a game of epic proportions, songs may be written after this matchup.
I don’t foresee any back of the book plays from the Steelers on either side of the ball, I expect a close game with one big play deciding the outcome.
Let Malor’s Ravens talk trash, let the Steelers talk on the field Saturday.
+7, 43, 56, 92, 17, 34, 51, 25, 53
I’ve always been a believer in the “it’s much more important to walk the walk than it is to talk the talk” theory. I’m excitedly awaiting this game as it could be the the premier game played this whole season: When it’s all on the line; I don’t have a doubt that both teams are going to not only bring their A game, but bring it in spades!
Side note: I hugged a Ravens fan yesterday. That’s right..hugged a Ravens fan. I felt a little dirty afterward, but it was for a good cause. (her dog was injured (he’s ok now) and she was quite anxious prior to the surgery) How do I know she was a Ravens fan? Her Ratbird hoodie stood opposite my fabulous, new Steelers shirt. We bantered a bit and agreed that this will be a game the football-lovin’ world will not only appreciate, but try to emulate.
Are we ready for some serious, playoff football?!!!
HERE WE GO STEELERS!
"Our Father, who art in Pittsburgh, Football be thy game. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, at Heinz Field as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, a stellar D and forgive us our bogus fines, as we (sorta) forgive Goodell who trespasses against us. And lead us not into defeat, but deliver us a Victory. For thine is The Steelers, the power and glory of climbing the STAIRWAY TO 7."
Ngata Broke Ben's Nose on Purpose
And for his coach to say things like “I was glad we broke his nose”, just shows that the coach is as dirty as the Ravens are. He encourages them to play this way. I like the way we play…tough & rough….but we have NEVER been ‘dirty players’, we have just been GOOD. No way would Coach Tomlin EVER say anything like that during a press conference……that he was glad 1 of his players hurt someone else, even if it was accidental. (which breaking Ben’s nose was not) Tomlin has too much class. Cheats never win…..remember that. The Ravens are going down.
