I am not surprised

I am a Steeler fan living in Seattle as well. The minute you tell someone you are a Steeler fan they just harp on how we “robbed” them of a Super Bowl, blah, blah, blah. I never had anything against the Seahawk but now I hate the, I hope they make the Super Bowl again this year and lose again and again and…..

I actually like Seattle (the city)

But what a bunch of lemon-rind sucking, myopically bitter grump-tards.

I’m hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (beginning in late April)…runs from the US-Mexico border up to Canada. After I finish I’ll be spending a little time in Seattle with friends & family, and grabbing a beer with Blitz if our schedules match up.

And I’ll be wearing black & gold every single day. Whether its a jersey, a hat, or a Terrible Towel, I WANT to see the reaction firsthand, from the epicenter of all-things-whiny-and-unfair.

Something to look forward to as I hike 2,650 miles.

But the school district says Grendon and all other students were warned on Thursday that anyone who didn’t want to wear Seahawks colors should wear their normal school uniform, which is limited to certain styles and colors of clothing.

Long time ago

I lived in Vancouver a long time ago. It was a great city then though some areas were not the best. I loved the easy access to the mountains and all the beaches in the city itself.

I couldn’t tell what the city is like now. It has under gone a lot of changes since the 1970s but some aspects are not likely to change. Some of the neighbourhoods were not great when I was there though I think there has been some gentrification of some of them. I don’t know how well the housing in the suburbs has held out nor if there are issues with gangs.

It may be that something along the coast or on Vancouver Island would b e better.

Anybody ever read

that early Dr. Seuss classic “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins”? This poor kid had a magic hat and when he tried to remove it and bow before the King, another, nicer hat appeared on his head. This continued all the way until he was to be executed by axe for disrespecting the King. Well, his hats wouldn’t come off until the end, bent over the executioners chopping stump. The last one was a magnificent, bejeweled crown, which he gave to the King to save his life. Pretty macabre story, if you ask me. Anyhow, what would this kid’s 500th Steeler jersey look like up there in Seattle, Zagnut?

GOOD GO GRENDON...

I love illiteration.

Grendon, It’s great to hear that the younger generation is producing Steeler Nation members like you. You did a little boo boo, but for a good cause.

To assist you and your family with the “robbery discussion”, I refer you to the professional analysis of all the calls from SB XL – it was ruled on, after the fact, on the show “Inside the NFL” HBO 2/9/2006. I don’t know if it is available anywhere on the net or in the HBO archives, but I have a copy.

Basically, the pros on the show said the Steelers won fair and square, and the calls against the SS were just as fair as the calls against the Steelers… and actually, one INT call (in favor of the Steelers) had resulted in the Steelers moving the ball about 30 yards in favor of the hawks (the Steelers & refs did the hawks a favor).

Tell the Seattle woosies to get a life or a team… and just like “there’s no crying in baseball”, someone tell Pete Carroll that “there’s no Heismann’s in the NFL”.

We can’t let this kid hang for having the conviction to be true to his and our team. Who cares that they have a dress code. Here’s an idea, Mr. Superintendent, sir, don’t worry about promoting support for your useless local sports team, and either have the kids wear whatever jersey they want, or wear the uniform. Don’t try to be the good guy by picking and choosing when you want to enforce your own rules.

Wait, are you related to Roger Goodell?

Grendon, good for you, I’m happy to hear of all the free Steelers stuff you’re going to get because of this. Enjoy it, you deserve it. Land of the Free?

Don’t believe it for a minute. I love my country, but this particular incident is nothing new. A brief internet search found many similar stories. Several high schoolers were sent home for wearing American flag tees on cinco de mayo. A young boy was told to remove an american flag from his bicycle that he had placed there in support of Veterans on Veterans Day. A second grader was sent home and told he could not return until after he had a complete psychological evaluation after he drew a picture of Christ on a cross.
They are coming for your guns. They are coming for your free speech. They are coming for your children, spank your kid in a supermarket and see if some mindless drone doesn’t call the cops on you. Anyone ever dealt with CPS? They have all the power and you have no recourse but to spend your life savings on an attorney with no guarantee you will ever get your parental rights back.
Religion is no longer the opiate of the masses, it has been replaced by sports and entertainment. Support your local team, do it rigorously, but take a little time to get involved in those things that really matter. Or one day you just might wake up and find that the country you are living in is complete unrecognizable as the one you grew up in.
Never for a minute think that what has happened in places like Germany, Italy or Russia can not happen here. It’s a guarantee, the snowball is rolling down the hill, wake up sports fans and channel some of that emotion into keeping America free or one day they won’t just be coming for your money and your speech and your guns, they will be coming for YOU!!!

by justagame on Jan 14, 2011 9:02 PM EST reply actions

To be fair...

As dumb of a rule as it was, it was pretty clear that the kid was to wear his uniform if he didn’t wear any Seahawks garb.

I feel the kid made the right choice, but with that comes consequences. It appears to me, judging by the windfall he’s reaping, it’s well worth being sent home. It seems as if the principal was clear with the rules that were set. I don’t feel school uniforms are a sign of an incoming apocalypse or fascism.

But I get the feeling I’d be in agreement with you on a lot of other stuff.

I'm all for freedom

But I wouldn’t agree with a lot of the “other stuff”

Religion still blinds most and capitalism is what rules, and frankly, they should come for your guns. Why do you think they come for your children? Morality. And what defines morality in our culture? Religion.

Sports and entertainment is what drives capitalism, but in this I agree = it is a mind numbing agent just like xbox and netflix.

and...

I’m assuming Truman Middle School, where this kid is enrolled, is a private school. In which case, regardless of what we think, has every right to require a dress code, just like private companies…

If it were a public school however, then there would be hell to pay, and our freedoms would be in question.

Other wise, I just complain because it’s just another reflection of groups that keep to themselves, forgetting about “community,” and learning from somebody different. Pretty soon, as with politics, there will be no exchange of ideas and finding common ground, but I digress.

Go Steelers.

Ten years was too much. Like previous posts, the most beautiful scenery you’ll ever see. Heck even the wife and I honeymooned in Victoria just prior to SB XL. All the Seattleites were in force talking about how they would take out the Steelers. Please. Holmgren came in the late 90’s and it was like they found a cure for cancer. That was as close as he got. Remember he brought Hasselbeck from Green Bay when he made the transition. That place is full of clean air and ultra liberals. Pretty good coffee, but other than UW (which has been a shadow of its former self) football and Brian Bosworth they have nothing to talk about on the gridiron. I like the kid…

Absolutely. We are GB Packer fans, and my kids wore green shirts to school today (non-Seahawks logo but also non-Packers logo, just neutral green). However, our principal, who is a Yankees fan, wore his Patriots jersey. I also saw a 7th grader with a Bears jersey, and I don’t believe he was kicked out of school today. It’s all good and should be all fun, and I think that the Tacoma school district and the majority of the Seahawks fans posting here need to lighten up. Root for your team, but don’t make me (or this kid) root for your team if we don’t choose to. This is still America.

Proof positive the kid was targeted for being a Steelers fan.

Sigh...

Yup, that’s my home.

I love the Northwest in almost every way (grew up in WA, now going to school in OR) but the tears of Seahawks fans still bitter over XL rain harder than the perpetually cloudy skies do some days.

Stuff like this doesn’t surprise me. Nor does it concern me really; the school had a strict dress code and the kid knew ahead of time there might be consequences for breaking it.

It’s still a bummer the school decided to be a hardass about the whole ordeal, but really, if you’re the kind of school that buys into the idea that uniforms are good because they put everyone on a level playing field and ensure there’s one less way kids can pick on each other for being “different,” you’re probably the kind of school that doesn’t want kids bringing in different jerseys on Seahawks appreciation day…

Honestly, I’m rooting for a Steelers-Seahawks rematch in the Super Bowl this year. Along the way, I hope the Seahawks are the recipients of several blatant blown calls in the division and NFC championship games, making history as the worst team ever to make a Super Bowl. Then I want the Steelers to steamroll them in the big game, in spite of, again, several BS calls in the Seahawks’ favor, while I am watching with all of my Seahawk fan friends (which is…pretty much all of my friends).

Maybe they’ll finally shut up?

Nah, way too much to ask there…

rec'ed

I grew up in an area where the wrong color could get you shot, there were no uniforms and I had to be very careful with what I wore. Even if you didn’t wear the wrong color you could get beat down if someone wanted what you were wearing. Though I am not the biggest fan of uniforms, I understand the purpose and have seen the difference they can make.

People don't ever seem to realize that doing what's right is no guarantee against misfortune.

I agree

and think the notion that the school is imposing some kind of fascist rule on the students is silly. Call me a fun hater, I say just keep them in uniforms all the time, and don’t put yourself in a position to fail. The problem here isn’t what they’re required to wear, it’s when they stray from those requirements.

That’s often the problem…it’s the lack of consistency. Interestingly enough, the same lack of consistency can be found all over the Seahawks franchise. Maybe it’s in the water out there.

I am 100% with you on the rematch by virtue of blown calls

and I’d like to see a few blatant ones in the Superbowl that limit the win to about 3 TDs versus the 45-6 blowout it would have otherwise been… LOL

picked up by the PG

It seems all the kid needed was a gold t-shirt with black pants…and maybe a terrible towel for good measure. He’s had an important learning experience about taking a stand.

Have lived in Seattle for more than 15 years and

Wore my Polamalu SB 40 Jersey to work yesterday and later switched to my James Harrison Home game black Jersey… Got a few jeers around town, but also some good comments.
