Ike on Tone or Edwards?
I'm concerned about our cornerback situation on Sunday. Should Ike guard Tone or Edwards?
During the last go-round with the Jets, Ike Taylor covered Santonio Holmes and Bmac drew Braylon Edwards. Those match-ups, in part, resulted with Edwards getting 100 yards receiving on 8 receptions and Tone collecting 40 yards on 6 receptions. Yep, Ike's the man.
This time, Bmac may not play due to an abdominal strain, possibly leaving Gay as our #2. So I suppose the real question becomes, Gay on Tone or Edwards?
Hm.
I'd hate to see Gay covering Braylon Edwards, who measures in at 6'3" and 213 lbs. I think Gay, at 5'10" and 190, is a decent CB, but if he matches against Edwards, he will be victimized. I see our CB getting bruised in coverage and....
Remember Gay getting steam-rolled by Tomlinson last year or so? God. Do we want to see Tomlinson running toward Gay with Edwards blocking? Gay will be destroyed by game's end I expect.
If it were my call, I would rather Gay guard Santonio, maybe with the FS shading his way, and let Ike take on Edwards. Please realize that I don't think Gay can shut down Santonio, who as we all know can be incredibly shifty. But I think this is the best we can do.
I'm sure Ike will make like a veterinarian and put down Edwards like a rabid puppy.
So. If Bmac can't play, how do you call coverage?

Edwards has a huge size advantage on Gay, but I really don’t want to count on Gay to tackle Holmes in the open field. The Jet’s offense isn’t going to move the ball consistently on us (or it had better not…) so I’d rather take out the guy that can turn a quick slant into a big play than the guy who needs to get down the field before making a big play. Sanchez’s mediocre arm strength gives Gay a bit more margin for error down the field.

One more thing
If BMac were healthy, both our CB’s would be solid tacklers, so it wouldn’t really make a difference, but either WR is a mismatch for Gay, who’d be more suited to cover Cotchery. We’ve got plenty of mismatches in our favor, though, so I’m not too concerned.

Miller on any one of your LBs…
Any of your OLBs having to cover a RB in the flat…
I will add Sanders against Drew Coleman… he was getting consistent separation last game.
Mike Wallace on anyone deep if not double covered or bracketed, or if Cromartie gives him a cushion, then on the comeback…
Our running game against your DL.
Heck, your NT against Pouncey. Rewatching the first game now, and it is amazing how quickly he goes backwards for a big man.
Our OLBs on a speed rush vs. your tackles… Woodley dominated Hunter quite a bit.
Should I continue?

And no holding by jets CB's this week
Seriously must be easy to become world renowned CB’s when you’re allowed 2-3 free jersey pulls all game.
Really?
last time I checked we had only had one sack recorded on us, and we had what? 3? and Two came from Drew Coleman who had 2 FF on the day, you remember him? The idiot who everyone in the Jets fanbase wanted to tie to the back of a bus and have him dragged back to Jersey. So I’d be careful in being so in love with your team.
Jason Taylor getting past blown coverage on your truck sized porous OL for the game winning Safety?
Marquice Cole a 2nd year guy, preventing the game winning touchdown on Big Ben’s famous drive saving play-actions?
Woodley for all his talents never getting a sack, nor Harrison?
Shall I continue? Or should we call a truce and enjoy tomorrow’s bloodbath?

I have energy... and truces are lame
Before I even start, let us put this in context. Your fellow Jet above asked me to name “one” mismatch, so before you claim I am in love with my team, I suggest you understand that.
Secondly, if you care to actually look above, you will see that I did remember Coleman and how often he was getting burned by Sanders non-stop, which is on tape for you to see. In fact, it is amazing how often the Steelers WRs were open against the Jets’ vaunted secondary. The guys on NFL Network’s Playbook broke down how much trouble the Jets have against bunch formations, pretty much the Steelers go-to formation, especially in that it takes Revis away from what he does best. In most of the last game, Revis was neither matched up on Ward or Wallace, instead focusing on Sanders. Not so much because of gameplan but because that is what was demanded from the Steelers’ alignment. Coleman did nothing in coverage, nor did the safeties, or Cole or anyone else beyond Revis and Cromartie. Even Cromartie had difficulties.
Further, before you start trumping the sacks argument, you would need to focus on the different approaches by the two offenses. I would be willing to bet that if you put a stopwatch on the average time holding the ball for each QB, then Big Ben would probably average something ridiculous like an extra 3 seconds average. So, the fact that the Jets designed their gameplan in order to avoid sacks at all costs (and this would have to be the case given how awful some of the throw were by Sanchez when under the least amount of pressure), then the one sack is a bit misleading of overall pressure, and does not indicate, for example, the two missed sacks by Lamarr Woodley (!) and Ike Taylor, respectively, which Sanchez did well to avoid nor the countless other instances of pressure.
As far as Cole, there was good coverage on the second try to the endzone. But, since it does not fit your argument, I am guessing that you chose to neglect that the first shot was dropped by Spaeth, who was wide open, and if he had not touched it all, could have been caught by the equally open Emmanuel Sanders. Not to mention, one good play does not a mismatch make, and Jason Taylor made only (!) one good play.
The thing I was most surprised in re-watching the game is how predicated the Jets offense is on misdirection. Whether it be Sanchez’s PA rollout for a TD, or the fake bad snap-direct snap to LT for a big third down, and there are a few other instances. Of the six or seven critical plays made by the Jets, by my count, all but two or three came from these sorts of plays. I mention this, because, beyond the return of Troy, or the improvement of Keisel now that the hamstring issues are behind him, etc., I think it would be much harder for the Jets to “trick” the Steelers defense again. That does not bode well for your team’s chances tomorrow.
Also interesting, the majority of your rushing yards came on two drives. I do not have the exact figures, but I would estimate that of the overall 106 yards, that more than 60 of them came on the drive near the end of the first quarter which ended in a punt, and then the other leading to a FG and icing the clock late. I am not sure why on these two drives it was more effective- it seemed the Steelers were trying to blitz more- but I would bet Lebeau does and has addressed it.
Again, all of these things I highlight reflect mismatches, not overall dominance…. I await your response.

Damn...
Just my luck, I decide to be a raging arrogant a-hole for one day after getting royally embarrassed at the gym, and I find one of a hundred guys who can throw me threw a woodchipper. Bravo good sir, your abilities to examine plays with an overshadowing amount of knowledge takes my limp knowledge and casts it aside.

Wow...
Thanks for the kind words. To be fair, I have been following most of your comments this week, and have gained much knowledge before the matchup tomorrow.
Enjoy the game…

Nah, I'm a fool when it comes to matchups.
I was just representing my team, it is hard to be a Jets fan in Jersey. Its easier than being a fan of a team in another far state. But its hard to defend the legacy of the Jets haha. It terms of mismatches, if McFadden is unable to play, or limited in reps I would assume your starting nickle William Gay would take on the the number 2 spot with Ike in the first spot. Now after the last game, I don’t know who Gay was on but our #3/4 and TEs did not have a good game, so I’m assuming he is good at the position but from I’ve heard he’s not the best in coverage. Maybe with help in the nickle position it is easier getting the brackets from a Safety or LB, but on the edges he may need help with double covering Edwards or Tone.
The problem is that Troy is injured. I know he’s a beast, but last game he was sluggish at times, he gave the big plays to Ryan Clark to while he was more back covering a bit. If Clark is going for big plays and Troy is going to support Gay, I really do think that the Ike/Edwards matchup will favor Edwards.
Now, that being said I think that Keller/J-Co match ups will be the bigger concern. Cause this team will want to max protect Sanchez from making big mistakes so I see it as a handcuffed version of the dink dunk. 6-12 yard plays at a time.
After seeing today that Ryan activated a D-line from the PS and swapped out a DB, I’m looking to see more rotation on 3-4 or a 4-3 scheme with a DL acting as a linebacker. Ryan has manipulated his schemes to start taking away things from the opponents. The DL suggests to me that he’ll take away the run game and Ben’s ability to escape the pocket and try to get after him with corner rushers, which worked last game.
If that’s the cause the match ups definitely favor our secondary… though Heath will definitely have a film resume on this game alone knowing a Ryan defense and TEs.

4-3 and the Steelers
It is fairly well known that the Steelers offence has not always matched up well with 4-3 defenses in the past. I am not certain what the story will be this week. It should be interesting to see what Rex comes up with. It could be the reason there was so little trash talk was that Rex had the D too busy learning something new.

well that is new to me
But I’ve seen him present an illusion of it using Taylor as the 4th man on the line, or was it Pace? But point is using an LB to be a 4th, but bringing in an extra member for the line would be ideal. With the Colts he locked up the passing lanes to keep Manning from being effective with his passing plays. With Brady he kept him from having the fast release and forced him to hold onto the ball, keeping the blitzkrieg offense running effectively.
Doesn’t work here with an effective run game and a passing game. So the idea is to make the Steelers only win a certain way. And in this case, the air attack is the lesser of two evils I believe. Lock down the ground, keep Ben in the pocket and unable to see down the field… that part doesn’t work cause he’s freakin Paul Bunyan, with his might Blue Oxdenhall

I just had a vision of Rex releasing the Kracken. Is Gholston even active for games these days?

He's active every so often..
they kept him off for the Pats game. Sad thing is we can’t get rid of him without taking a gash at the Salary Cap, we’d only save 400k. Its pretty sad with Gholston really, at home games the fans get excited when he gets pressure and tackles.

Hmm, you have dissuaded me from my original argument
A few days ago, I stated that I hoped Taylor would blanket Edwards since, outside of the redzone, it seems the only way the Jets get a big play is through deep outs and flag routes to Edwards, while Holmes takes the short and intermediate routes, to decent but not always consistent success.
I figured the combination of a CB and some safety help could deal with this. But maybe, the most important thing in this game is preventing the Jets, not from getting the occasional big play, but from consistently moving chains, which is what Holmes provides. Not to mention, from the discussion about Ike “popping” Holmes, it would seem that he has been told he would shadow them.
Finally, I do not know if this was part of your point, but what you said made me think that, given the proclivity of both Gay and B-Mac to give a large cushion at the beginning of the play, the way that Edwards plays would lend itself to that style.
Related note: I think the Jets are making a mistake with Revis on Ward, and Cromartie on Wallace. I thought earlier in the week this is what they would do. However, most Jets fan seem to think this is a good idea because Cromartie is more athletic and Wallace only runs deep routes and slants, while Ward, although more physical, can not get separation.
I think Ward would still find a way to make 2-3 clutch plays, and Wallace’s game is much more diverse than that. I remember Garcon of the Colts tuning up Cromartie every time he gave him a cushion on the line of scrimmage. Wallace is too solid to get consistently jammed, so I am not sure how they think they can account for him with those matchups.
Big Ben seems to have too much time on his hands, and too many hands on his time.
Yeah,
I’m not sure why they would waste Revis on Hines. No disrespect to Hines, but he is clearly the 3rd or 4th option for Ben at this point. If I were the Jets, I would use Revis on the guy who could kill you with one play. Cromartie will not be able to shut down Wallace, and we all know “Mr. 60 Minutes” needs only one or two plays to be the difference.

The Jets Achillies Heel
No question the ’Tone-Edwards combo presents some issues for our CBs. My take on it is to separate the issues into two pieces:
1. Shallow passes to Tone-Edwards- drop a LB back to assist with coverage. It presents a more physical matchup to force the catch into a “tight window”.
2. Deep passes to Tone-Edwards-the plan here is to break through on the rush to Sanchez. He will need time to find his receivers deep. Brady and Peyton he is not. If Woodley and Harrison are doing well, few deep opportunities will be available. And Sanchez is not exactly pinpoint accurate on those kinds of throws.
I think the combination of 1. and 2. above will mute their passing game (except for the short stuff). So bring a safety up (Troy?) to stuff the run.
If they cannot run and they cannot pass, they will not win.

What you said.
I agree with this asessment. The Steelers D needs to do a better job stopping the run than in the previous game, and should be able to do that with Troy in the mix. The Jets entire offense is predicated on running first, or at least having the threat of a credible running attack. Take that away, then put the ball in Dirty Sanchezs’ hands and see if he has the moxy to win a game for the green team. I vote no, he doesn’t have the moxy and will make at least one boneheaded play.

The Free Saftey help you mentioned
could be Troy, like against Balt he and Clark kept switching SS/FS roles.
Troy over the top greatly minimizes anyone getting the ball deep.

League’s best two man defense. Nobody else needed
we're not the jets
our defense doesnt have one corner try to shut down one receiver. we’ll have ike on tone, edwards, and whoever else they send out there. its not like revis who will just shadow the opposing #1 receiver all game. we run much more zone coverage and we’ll have everyone covering everyone.

i was thinkin this
it seems like Steelers D does not play wr/cb matchups too often, is this just my perception or what?
Nope its just the case
Zone coverage typically doesnt ask for a lot of one on one. It just says cover your zone doesnt matter who goes in it.
But if it goes to deep routes a lot of times that CB in zone has to run with the guy going deep. Thats where I feel Ike can keep up with Tone or anybody and make a play on the ball.
Double Tone if possible
Quite honestly we’ve all seen here how Tone can make some serious epic plays at the right moments. He was a playoff meast when he rolled with us. If its 4Q and the games still in the balance I’d say have two men up on him, play 5-6 DB’s and try to go full coverage on Tone.
Preferably I’d have Taylor all over him, Taylor’s had his best year ever and thats saying something.
