Congratulations BTSC

Well, first off want to say what a hell of a game and a hell of a season for you guys. Pittsburgh is truly the cream of the crop in this league and it shows by how you guys perform year after year. It was pretty satisfying to see Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez walk away with their heads held low.

Wanted to stop by here not only to offer my congratulations on getting to the Superbowl, but cover a few things as well about this blog and the people who visit it daily. I joined SB Nation about 2 and a half years ago without any knowledge of what was to come from being a part of this great network of blogs. It was pretty cool wandering around the many different blogs and discussing the sport that rules my life with a bunch of strangers who I have never met once in my life. I've gotten a pretty bad rep around some of the blogs here, but I had it coming to me with most of the trolling that I did in the past. Not BTSC though. Sure there are a few bad eggs around this site (you all suck actually) but there are some really cool dudes on this blog that I thoroughly enjoy talking football with. Mike Bean has always welcomed me to BTSC because of the attitude and energy I feel I bring to your fan base by being a stinking ratbird fan as you all would say. Thank you for putting up with all my crap.

Baltimore Beatdown is where I can express how I feel about my team, but it has been quite enjoyable being able to go back and forth with so many people here. Blogging has been a big part of my life the last few years and has opened up alot of doors for me as far as career opportunities. I have been offered numerous positions from websites and even done some radio time with Baltimore sports stations. So there are reasons why I continue to "troll" these blogs. And to all the people who have been civil and put up with the bullshit I spew out everyday, thanks. To some of the total assholes and the ones who sent me emails threatening me, go fly a kite, but I am glad I made you so angry. This is a cool blog and I would hope that my frequent appearances have given you all some good entertainment.

Last weeks game between our two teams was tough for me. Not sure if alot of you realize just how much seeing that game unfold like it did hurt me. I had to totally shut down for a week and get away from football in general. Do any of you know how freaking hard it is to not watch ESPN or NFL Network for an entire week?!? There ain't shit on TV at 3am but infomercials. Man, that was rough and I am sure alot of people here enjoyed knowing that I had tears in my eyes at the end of that game. That shit sucked man.

What a football team you guys have. Pittsburgh is by far the team I hate most and I only wish 0-16 season upon your franchise, but it is quite an honor to sometimes watch you guys win the way you do. Excuse my language, but I enjoy seeing a team like yourself give a big "fuck you" to Roger Goodell and the rest of the Patriot loving assholes that have started to ruin the game we all love. Trying to manipulate the game so that more points are scored, Deebo and crew are still able to body slam any offense that gets in their way. I hate the results it brings, but I like knowing that more people are pissed off than happy when teams like Pittsburgh and Baltimore win big.

I only hope that my Ravens can model themselves after you all, and I believe they are on the right track. As much as you guys may think Baltimore sucks, you have to give us the credit of being able to somewhat hang with you guys and the rest of the league. The Ravens have alot of good things going their way and they do have a bright future ahead of them which I think will include a Superbowl or two. I bleed this team and without them, I have no idea what I would be able to do. I look forward to the battles between Ben and Joe down the road, they are only going to get better. And maybe, just maybe next time we will be able to beat you guys.

Well, again, congratulations on getting to Dallas. There are alot of true football fans on this site that deserve to be rooting for a team like the Steelers. Hope everyone is enjoying the ride and good luck 2 weeks from now. Go Packers.

Totally respect the Ravens

My parents grew up in the era where it was always the Steelers vs Raiders rivalries of the 70’s. I am honored to be alive growing up doing the prime of the Steelers vs Ravens rivalries. I feel the games we play bring out the best in both teams.

Do not worry the Ravens will have there time in sun. The AFC is very competitive more particularly the AFC north.

I never really get into smack talk because sometimes you really do not know what will during the playing of the actual game.

I would like to extend any apologies if I have offended you or anyone else over @ the Baltimore Beatdown.

Good luck in your offseason

Thank You

Mr. Malan, for your contributions to the BTSC website. Glad to have you as one of the “regulars” around here, you do keep us honest & your input is always appreciated.
It takes real class for you to do a write-up like this, and I feel your pain with the recent Ravens loss. I think we have all been there before, glad you bounced back…
The Ravens have earned a ton of respect with their play, and YOU SIR have earned our respect at BTSC.
So now…

Derp. Derp. Derp.

Last week, immediately after the Steelers-Ravens game, a couple of BTSC folks wondered if you’d be back. I replied that you certainly would. They underestimated you, Brian.

The Steelers and the Ravens are like Ali and Frazier. Two all-time greats, no love lost, and a guarantee that you’ll get more than your money’s worth when the meet. And, when it’s all over, respect that true warriors have for one another. There is no better rivalry in football right now than Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Somebody once said, “iron sharpens iron.” (Wonder who!)

It’s good to have you here. And consider taking a short drive into DC for the Super Bowl, and be a guest of Steeler Nation at the Pour House, 319 Penna Av SE, on Capitol Hill.
You might even want to wear your Ravens’ jersey.

I have respect for any team who plays good football the right way. Pittsburgh and Baltimore have a respect for smash-mouth physical football ingrained into their DNA. No matter who their coach is, no matter how many rules Goodell comes up with, Baltimore and Pittsburgh will hit you. In five years, Rex Ryan will have flamed out in NY, Dom Capers in GB will earn another HC job, and those teams will move away from physical football in favor of whatever is in vogue at the moment and Baltimore and Pittsburgh will still hit you.

by furthur56 on Jan 24, 2011 10:44 AM EST reply actions

I respect the shit out of Baltimore!

To me, there are 2 teams that play real football in this league, and that is Pittsburgh and Baltimore. While it is true I hate you guys, believe me, when you laid a pile of hurt on the Pats last year in the playoffs, I was loving every minute of it!

Anyway, Pittsburgh-Baltimore is must see TV, and whether of not Roger and the NFL want to admit it, it is football the way it shoud be!

Good luck to you, hopefully we have a season next year so we can not the snot out of each other!

Anyway, Pittsburgh-Baltimore is must see TV, and whether of not Roger and the NFL want to admit it, it is football the way it shoud be!

I loved how the playoffs came to be this season, because it went against everything the NFL wants. The NFL wants to see high octane offenses play in favorable conditions such as a dome or somewhere nice and warm. Well, what we got were 4 of the most historic franchises who play in the shittiest weather imaginable with defenses that are the reasons why the rules have changed so much. Goodell was probably sitting in his suite in New York crying about how we can’t see Brady’s cologne ads for the rest of the season but now have to see Big Fat Bennigans and a Mexican battle it out.

I've always enjoyed your prose

Acidic and emotional, like it should be.

I remember your gloating after 1, remember your drunken ‘wandering the desert’ despair after 2 (really really enjoyed those posts), and I assumed that you had gone to a dark and quiet place for a while after the unbelievable 3. Nice that you resurfaced.

Oh I went into a very dark and quiet place after that game. It was not a pretty 48 hours after that heartbreaking loss. I found it hard to even get drunk as the pain inside just killed any buzz I made by slamming down unnecessary amounts of watered down beer and cheap whiskey that could probably pass for motor oil. Just a typical day in the life of MaLoR.

Did you catch the quote where Ryan Clark said that if he couldn’t play for the steelers, then he’d want to play for the Ravens? So, we’ll be sure to return the warm regards should the Ravens ever get past the AFC title game….or at least leave instructions for our decedents.

Good to hear you’re getting some professional leads from your effort, analysis, and time spent on the blogs.

Did not hear that from Clark. That is a great thing to read from a player that is looked at as our enemy.

from Peter King article;

“Hatred is a strong word,‘’ Clark said. "I don’t particularly hate them. In fact, the ultimate respect I can give them is if I couldn’t play for Pittsburgh, I’d want to play for Baltimore.’’

He paused for a second, then laughed. "Now make sure you say I don’t want to play for them — I hope I play for Pittsburgh the rest of my career. I love the Steelers. I love being a Steeler. I love Steeler Nation. But here’s what I mean: We play football like it’s supposed to be played. So do they.’’

I do not think that Baltimore sucks. I will confess to being REALLY HAPPY that we beat you, but that is really a testament to your team. The games between the Steelers and the Ravens are the games that mean the most to me.

I really love having you on BTSC because you know football, I get great insight into the Ravens and you are one of two decent Ravens fans I know. Ones I actually like, whose input and opinions I take seriously.

Cam Cameron is sticking around. I am one of the few fans who is alright with him staying here as I blame much of our failures to players not executing, poor O-Line play and Joe still getting his feet under him as he slowly becomes what I see as our franchise QB.

We just need a new set of players and a slightly different system. Ozzie Newsome will no doubt give us those players and hopefully Cam can get his act together.

Agreed

Coaching is key, but players make plays i.e. Boldin not making one when it counted most.

Was he a dissapointment from your perspective? I watch the Ravens when the Steelers play at a different time or day and he seemed pretty good all year.

The entire offense was a disappointment to me. All these great talents on one team and we struggled far too often. But like I said above, the OL underperformed so much. They couldn’t block a 10 year old in some games. We really missed Jared Gaither this year.

It was a collective failure and Cam was part of it. But I don’t think we would improve much if we just implemented a new system next year instead of implementing new players. We need speed at WR big time.

To all – how indicative of Ratbirds/Stillers style football was Farrior’s hit yesterday? Just simply awesome…..that’s the play that stood out in my mind from yesterday.
Real difference between Ratbirds and Stillers right now…..we got Ben – you guys got Joe…..that’s all.

It of course was a great play, but in my opinion it should have been flagged. Farrior hit Greene head first and it was a clear helmet to helmet hit. But whatever.

could've probably been called, he led with the helmet

but you hardly ever see that given when it’s a runner. Mostly when it’s a receiver or a QB. RB’s have to deal with that shit 6 or 7 plays a game!

by KiwiSteelerFan on Jan 24, 2011 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

I could be wrong

but I believe that RBs are pretty much fair game when it comes to helmet-to-helmet hits. It would have to be something totally unnecessary for the refs to call it.

by shleeve on Jan 24, 2011 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

Farrior didn't really lead though

it was an attempt at a wrap up tackle, helmets just hit first.

by shleeve on Jan 25, 2011 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

you can hit a runner helmet to helmet, even if its the quarterback running beyond the line of scrimmage, unless he is giving himself up on a slide. once a receiver is no longer ‘defenseless’ you can hit them helmet to helmet, and you can pretty much hit a running back with the ball helmet to helmet anytime. of course these are the rules but refs interpret them differently on a play by play basis.

Messages like this aren’t at all necessary, but those who make them truly show their class. Good write up man.

I would like to point out, however, that I never want to see the Ravens go 0-16. Or have several bad years in a row. I hate one sided rivalries, and nothing kills them more than one bad team against a good one or, god forbid, two bad teams. There are two reasons the Steelers-Ravens rivalry is so great; the teams are similar in style and they both are consistent Super Bowl contenders. I love this rivalry and the skill and ability of both our teams is what makes it so great.

I never want to see the Ravens go 0-16 either, because when the Bungles are actually good and are competing against the Steelers for the division, I’d like to see the Ravens beat the Bungles once or twice to help us out. Similar to the Bungles beating the Ravens early this year. That win was the difference between the Steelers and Ravens and who got the bye.

There you are!

Kept checking Baltimore Beatdown, because I wanted to read your level headed thoughts on the game, while other Ravens fans were calling for Harbaugh’s, Flacco’s and the ref’s heads. Couldn’t find one of your posts anywhere. A week break sounds about right after a gut wrenching, heart ripped out loss like you experienced. After watching the game last week and this week, I spent the next 3 hours watching ESPN and the NFL Network just to relive those moments all over again. If the Steelers lose, I avoid those stations like the plague.

This year my 15 year old son told me, I hate losing to the Ravens. Yup, I told him that there’s nothing worse in this world right now. We hate them, but respect them, because we know we’re mirror images of each other and the only thing that separates us are the QBs.

I’d wish you and your team good luck next year, but I can’t and never will.

I always enjoy when you get into the mix of things around here. Keep us honest, so to speak. People keep saying it took balls to post this – and they are correct but I’d say it takes them just to hang around and speak up the way you do all the time. As much as I despise the Ravens I do love they way they play football and I love it when our teams play each other. Never a dull moment.

If it makes you feel any better, though it probably won’t, I thought about you after the game because damn – It’s hard enough losing to each other but to be yanked back down after the high of the first half…that is brutal.

Welcome back.

Ditto all the good stuff above, MaLoR

And I’ll tell you this: I sure hope that when the shoe is on the other foot, whenever that may be, I (we) have the sportsmanship to admit it. Because it’s almost certainly going to happen at some point. You’ve conducted yourself in such a way that I think relatively few are capable of. In some ways, most of us on this board are “untested”, as we’ve been lucky enough to be fans of the franchise that has experienced arguably the most success in the SB era. If that were to change, would we be able to accept that with humility? We can hope so, but we don’t know for sure yet. Here’s hoping.

Hey Malor

Thanks for the post. 2 years ago, I hated reading your posts – but, if you don’t mind me saying so, as you are growing in college, you are also growing philisophically. This is going to serve you well in your post undergrad years.

Another funny thing is that when i was about your age in 1992, I had a similar sports experience to the one you went through this week. I was a 20 year old Pirates fan – we were one strike away from the World Series, when Barry Bonds throws and 18-hop whiffle ball to home plate, and Sid Bream runs from 2nd to home on one leg to end our season. I vowed then I’d never take sports so seriously, but I continue to be on the verge of being hospitalized during every Steelers game.

We’ll see you next year – hopefully with an extra piece of finger candy.

Thanks MaLoR

It sure wouldn’t be the same here without you. You keep us honest. And you’re astonishingly objective for a die-hard sports fan, which is truly a rare thing. Of course I think the Ravens stank, but we truly have the best contemporary rivalry in football and it’s in great part because we’re so similar. Defense first, physical teams with a blue-collar mentality and great team unity. Plus a wacky fan base.

Those pantyhose-style black game pants you wear have got to go, though. Does not fit your team at all, keep those for aerobics class with Richard Simmons!

My last trip to Baltimore

I remember three things from my last trip to Baltimore:
1 One of the windows on the train we were onbroke and the car filled with black snoke and soot till some of the soldiers put something over the opening.
2. My father and Baltimore uncle took me to the docks and I remember this huge ship with a torpedo hole in it.
3. We went on a fishing boat and there were a lot of big, silver fish with black stripes on them!

You didn’t have the balls to show up after the loss, coming now only makes you look ever more pathetic. I for one wouldn’t have been surprised if you had come in here running your ignorant mouth yet again had we lost.

You obviously haven’t learned much either.

“The Ravens have alot of good things going their way and they do have a bright future ahead of them which I think will include a Superbowl or two. I bleed this team and without them, I have no idea what I would be able to do. I look forward to the battles between Ben and Joe down the road, they are only going to get better.”

Same homer vision that led you to believe so many things that proved out wrong over time. News flash for you, the Ravens do not have a bright future. They have an aging defense with no stars being groomed for replacement. You WR corps is an overpaid joke, and Flacco will never be good enough to beat Ben, let alone with a SB.

No English, Irish or Scot’s blood in me except, of course, that of wenches kidnapped by my Viking ancestors as they used the British Isles as a bloody play ground. Seriously though, heritage is nice and all that but it doesn’t mean nearly as much as the person we are and the lives we lead. Just because my ancestors (Icelandic, French and Hungarian) looted, pillaged and despoiled their way across various parts of Europe doesn’t mean I am the same sort of person.

Dude, this Eric Berry thing is the only bull shit you ever bring up. What the fuck is your obsession with me getting his position mixed up. Honestly, every girlish insult I see from you towards me, it says “MALOR SAID ERIC BERRY WAS A FREE SAFETY!” Well here you go bud.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2010_FS

From the CBS sports site itself.

Often compared to Baltimore’s Edward Reed and Denver’s Brian Dawkins, Berry is the type of player a team can build a defense around.

With NFL teams looking for “interchangeable parts” in their defensive backfield, Berry is an ideal choice for a team with secondary woes. Known for his outstanding ballhawk skills, he fell seven yards shy of breaking the NCAA all-time record for most yards gained on interception returns, as his 494 yards rank behind the 501 generated by Terrell Buckley of Florida State (1989-91).

Sounds like an Ed Reed clone to me. I got his position mixed up and you have seem like the world is coming to an end.

This is literally the only thing you EVER bring up when discussing why you think I don’t know shit about this sport. Get some new fucking material bud, you are a lonely old man with only 2 ways of getting an erection, snorting Viagra and watching Mendenhall hump Ben. Congrats, you know more about football in the 70’s than I do, WOOPIE! I am so impressed. I bet you know more about the cold war, soda pop and going steady.

Listen up Gramps, you don’t know shit about me and you have no material as far as insults. I would run circles around your plastic hip while you take your 5 different kinds of medication to get rid of the liver spots on your neck and arms.

I have admitted that Pittsburgh is a superior team to Baltimore, what else do you fucking want from me. Want me to admit that Eric Berry plays strong safety? Ok, ERIC BERRY PLAYS STRONG SAFETY!

Maybe your draft ‘guru’ Ozzie should have picked up Wallace, Sanders, or Brown. Not that it would matter with Joe Flaccid at QB.

Ozzie’s Browns could never get to the big dance, always fell short because they couldn’t beat the better QB, Elway. Ozzie has rebuilt those Browns in Baltimore, and they will have the same fate, crushing post season losses at the hands of a better QB, never reaching the promised land. Fitting for a city that cried about their team being stolen, then went out and did the same thing.

Boy, am I glad to share this blog with you...

Listen up, sunshine, when a rival fan comes over here to congratulate us, it takes a special kind of dumb to take that opportunity to simply berate him for past transgressions.

MaLoR will never get banned from here, simply because he is a pure fan of football. We just forgive him the fact that he is very misguided in his choice of team to root for.

You, however, barely ever contribute positively to any conversation, and I would imagine you are a few insults away from a warning, at the VERY least. So, go ahead. Keep on keepin’ on with your bullshit, and we’ll just see who lasts longer on this blog.

I guess the difference

Is that when you are younger and not wealthy per se you go with what’s cheap. You want to drink a ton so you don’t waste money with the more expensive darks, IPAs, microbrews, etc.

I don’t think there is a regular Natty. It’s Natty Ice and Natty Light. I usually stay away from anything that has “Ice” in the name, because I feel like it is basically synonymous for “shit” in beer terms.

by John Stephens on Jan 25, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

The "Ice" in a beers name

usually means that it has a higher alcohol content. Like The Beast Ice. Regular Beast is 3.0, and Beast Ice has 5.3 (IIRC).

I guess that is tha adage

But I would consider myself a seasoned beer drinker and I still like light beers. Nothing completes my Sunday of football better than a basket of wings and a Bud Light. It just works.

Agreed, but substitute Bud for Miller Lite.

I hate budweiser

Much rather have a Coors, or Miller High Life.

Miller Lite is for kings. Best all around beer out there, next to Stella.

Eh...

I’m not a huge NBA guy, I only watch sporadically during the regular season, but I’ll watch most playoff games. Same kinda goes for college ball, but I like going up to ’Cuse for games as often as possible.

I’m a Melo fan, so if he lands on the Knicks, I might watch them a little more. I’ve watched them a little bit more now with Amare Stoudamire. I watch more for who’s playing then a certain team, and I can change the channel real quick if the game isn’t flowing.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

Have you ever tried Henry Weinhart's Irish Style Ale?

…it’s light and amazingly good with Tex-Mex or Cajun food.

There’s a place next to the U of O campus in Eugene where you could sit outside and drink this stuff and eat Cajun food until you couldn’t eat or drink anymore.

Tried the stuff in bottles and cans and it was damn good. But the draft was unbelievable. And Homer knows beer.

Malor

Congrats on owning up. I would miss you if you didn’t drop by to stir things up while still keeping some actual football in the mix.

I don’t hate the Ravens though I do respect them and I do very much enjoy when the Steelers beat them. There is more pleasure in defeating a team you respect than one you don’t respect. The Cowboys on the other hand could go 0-16 from now till the end of time for all I care.

0-16

The Cowboys, Raiders and the Patriots. In that order.

I wonder how Dallas fans are feeling right now? The Super Bowl that they were supposed to win at home now has the two non-division teams they hate the most in it. Talk about sweet justice.

It would be so sweet

to see the cowboy hero (and the North Texas Super Bowl Committee leader) Roger Staubach have to hand the Lombardi Trophy to the Rooney family.

That should be the scene that we want to see so badly.

Lol good on you MaLoR

I had noticed you werent around on either BTSC or BB. I like to lurk to see what you are doing, mainly because half the fun of being one teams fan, is that you absolutely hate another team…but you also get to talk with the enemy which in any other war is usually impossible. I do enjoy your Raven insight and the fun you bring to this blog.

In saying that, congrats on a 3rd straight playoff season. Maybe someday soon those fortunes will change and you convert playoff appearances in rings.

LOL Jk, keep losing to us please. Kthxbai
