how to win
In order to reach the Super Bowl, the Steelers likely will face in successive weeks the two toughest and most-feared QBs in the NFL: Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Both of these guys have figured out the vaunted Steeler D. Brady is 6-1 against Pittsburgh, while Manning beat them convincingly in Pittsburgh last year. Both QBs exploit the key weakness in the Steelers' defense: the short passing game. This is a weakness since Pittsburgh stops the run and limits the deep pass by leaving open the middle of the field with its zone coverage. That Pittsburgh has tolerated sub-par cornerbacks for years speaks to the inherent focus of a system that does not emphasize the cornerback position. This system presents a great playing of the odds since most QBs cannot execute consistent short passes without error. But Manning and Brady can. This, along with a suspect O-line that keeps Pittsburgh from racking up 30+ points against good teams, sets the team up for failure when they face the Colts and especially the Pats. That is the nature of the problem.
So I would like to know what the solution is and trade-offs inherent to that solution. Many complained that the Brady was not blitzed enough last game, but was the problem that the ball was released too fast for blitzing to work? Or that the Steelers couldn't blitz because they needed to cover multiple short-passing options? Do the Steelers have a way to put the kind of pressure on Brady (or Manning) that the Giants did in SBXLII, or does the shorter passing emphasis of the '10 Pats (versus the '07 incarnation) mean that even that great pass rush would fail this time? Should the Steelers give a little on the pass rush to have more success in man coverage, like, for example, by sitting Farrior in favor of a quicker linebacker instead? Will the Steelers get more push in a three-man rush if and when they have Smith and Keisel back for the playoffs? What needs to be done to better leverage Polamalu, who was not very effective in the most recent defeats to both Brady and Manning?
Thoughts please...

Manning stew with a side of Brady fondue
Manning can’t compete with a healthy Steeler team when he doesn’t have anything else. No Addai, no Collie…and I’m not sure what other injuries they have, but you can bet Sal Alosi’s going to injure another starter if he can find a way to do it. Manning is unquestionably one of the best to ever play the game, but he doesn’t have a chance against a healthy Steeler D, especially w/out a run game to speak of.
Now Brady’s likely to have to face two of the toughest teams in the NFL back to back. Expect at least 2 sacks against the ratbirds, and at least 1 pick. I do NOT see this streak of his continuing. He’s also likely to end up with a badly bruised O-Line – the purple parrots are likely to play rough as possible against a team like this – they want to win, and they can only do that playing their own style of ball. With a healthy Polamalacleese, Aaron Smith, Harrison, Kiesel and the gang, I don’t care how good you are, you’re gonna start hearing footsteps and second guessing throws. If we can read the plays right and stop the run against the pats, we can crush Tom Beiber with the pass rush.
Steelers didn’t play the Colts last year. The 08 loss to them was in the closing minutes. I’d blitz em both till the cows come home. have a free rusher every play. Neither team’s receivers are huge threats 1 on 1, besides maybe Reggie Wayne.
Yeah, we handed the '08 game to the Colts with several untimely INTs from Ben.
Manning has never had the success against us that Brady has.

As for CJ, he’s going to get his. That’s what he does. You can’t hold him under 100 yards, so forget that.

2-2 for his career

The key to either Manning or Brady is confusion and pressure. Pressure is the easier of those two to accomplish because either of those two are extremely difficult to confuse.
Honestly, the colts in their current state don’t scare me at all. Manning is not good enough to carry them against our defense if Troy and Aaron Smith are healthy. The Patriots will be a problem though if we face them because we simply don’t match up well.
The way to beat the Pats is to turn Troy loose and hope for one of his signature big plays and then the offense needs to play tough and efficient football and keep brady off the field as long as possible. If we can hang with the pats and keep it close to the fourth quarter, I like our chances. Of course I would say that about any matchup as long Ben is our QB.
Tomlin seems to have absorbed
the Chuck Noll philosophy – if you think you’ll be seeing someone down the road, don’t show them too much. Don’t lay down, of course, but don’t use your whole playbook. That’s just one reason that yesterday’s game against the Browns was so successful – they executed some very basic plays well, rather than throw in new blitz packages, different offensive sets or coverages.
My heros have always been Steelers...
i don’t think the ARE pass and the fake spike are basic plays….

hopefully, I’d love to see a fake spike to win the game in the playoffs/superbowl

score more points?
yea I l know its simply said…Manning and company can be contained. The talent around him is not the same. The Pats – well, a few tip balls on d, a fumble, special teams play…something that changes the game around, And then ..
Ben will need to go for 300 + and simply outscore them.
Brady has the answer each time. I’m not sure what else they can do in D…it will come down to individual big plays that alter the pace of the game.
We don’t have linemen who require extra attention so any disruption will come from LB’s Corners and Troy.
Case Hampton might not see the field that day.

Smith, Keisel, and Ziggy all require double teams? I’m sure they will get their fair amount of attention.

how to win
Score more points than the other team by the allotted 60 minutes.

The Steelers scored 3 points in three quarters against NE.
I know there is great concern about how to stop Brady, but Ben and that offense is going to have to put put 1st half points on the board…probably at least 14. The offense has got to do their part and help to take some pressure off the defense early on.

Definitely
We held the Pats to 10 points in the first half before the floodgates opened. If the offense could keep the D off the field with long scoring drives early in the game our chances of winning will increase dramatically.

then again, perhaps we'll play neither
There’s no guarantee the Jets won’t beat Manning. In fact that should probably be expected since the Colts reached the playoffs by having an easy schedule the last 4 games.
There’s no guarantee the Ravens won’t go to NE and harass Brady into submission like they did last year either.
It’s the Playoffs. The one thing we can usually count on is that something unpredictable will happen. However if we do play them, then hit them early and often. There hasn’t been a QB yet that can have a great game from his back.
pressure and ball control
the offense has to do its part to be able to stay in the game with either of them, specially the Pats
with the Colts, they just don’t seem to be a scary football team, the D should be able to hold them under 20, and I expect the O to do enough
as for the Pats, I have no idea, my best guess is to blitz constantly, keep Brady under pressure and jam the receivers at the line, I know that kind of leaves us vulnerable to the big play, but if they score, better for them to score quickly than to eat time off the clock and wear the D down
