Where Greatness Descends

While (not so) patiently waiting for Game Day, and reflecting on the Lombardi and its rich Steeler history...

(This time, the apologies are to Robert W. Service)

Lombardis are won when the season’s done

By men both strong and wise

And the Road to the Bowl will take its toll

On those who would gain the Prize

And the journey’s begun by more than one

That won’t make it to the end

But the best of the lot will share that spot

Where greatness then descends!

Now the story’s told of the Black and Gold

From the days of Super Bowl IX

Of Terry, Mean Joe, Jack Ham, Franco

Whose talents did combine

To form a team that would reign supreme

Till the decade came to rest

Four times they scored the Great Award

For the Steelers were the best

But some time went by, the years did fly

Until 2005

A group emerged who had the urge

To fight to stay alive

They carried their load through a long, tough road

It was almost miraculous

Hines, Big Ben, Porter – and then

They triumphantly parked the Bus!

It wasn’t much longer, the team grew stronger

(We had added Coach Mike by then)

The Cardinals did yield the length of the field

On Harrison’s interception!

At Raymond James the greatest of games

We then did finally win

For the refs did say after long replay

Santonio’s toes were in!

Oh, Lombardis are won when the season’s done

By men both strong and wise

And the Road to the Bowl will take its toll

On those who would gain the Prize

And the journey’s begun by more than one

That won’t make it to the end

But the best of the lot will share that spot

Where greatness then descends!
