Every year it feels like Steeler Nation, myself included, writes off the NE game as a loss before it is played. But this year I am taking a different approach. This game is winnable. Period. And I am going to tell you why.
The "Lake Effect"
Our Offense is Explosive
Reason #1: Carnell Lake has been good for the Steeler secondary.
Gone are the days of the 10 yd cushion. We have an aggressive secondary that gets after receivers. I think what has plagued us in the past when we played NE is that Tom Brady was able to hit those quick short slants/outs and kill us in the short game. With this new aggressive secondary, I feel confident in our ability to make Tom Brady take more time to make throws. And everyone knows when a QB takes more time it increases the chance that the Steelers pass rush is going to hit home. Side note: I love seeing Tom Brady on the ground with a Steeler standing over him.
Reason #2: We have an answer for Tom Brady & Co. on offense.
The Steelers have a great mix of young talent and experienced vets in the receiving core. The offense can take over games and put up points. The Patriots Defense isn't exactly up there. In fact they are ranked 32nd in the pass. I think the Steelers can really exploit a secondary that is ranked last in the league. We have the tools and all we need to do is execute.
- Giving Tom Brady time
- Not getting off the field on third down against a potent offense
- Not converting drives into points
So in summation, the Steelers have the tools to win this game and head 6-2 into Ravens Week (Must win for a split). We need to execute and manage the mistakes we make. Go Steelers!
