Legursky is an Olsavsky type - an undersized underdog that is easy to like and adopt as a fan favorite, and a guy you just want to see succeed. He has acquitted himself very nicely in spot duty, especially at Center in the Super Bowl last year in a tough spot going up against B.J. Raji. He also brings versatility to the line by being position flexable (C/G) which is valuable. Beyond that he seems to be a coaches favorite, which indicates that he is assignment sound, and not prone to stupid mistakes and penalties.
All of that being said, Legs just doesn't seem to me like he is capable down in down out of creating push at the line of scrimmage. I could be wrong here, but my perception is that his inability to win the turf war on the interior of the "strong side" is a major liability in the Steelers run game. I am always inclined to trust Tomlin, Kugler, and co., and I'm smart enough to know just how little I know compared to them. On the other hand, while the coaches value him for his smarts and savvy, from a fans perspective I don't care if he's the Einstein of NFL Guards if he can't beat the guy across from him and open holes in the run game. Perhaps this issue would be mitigated if he was a superior pass protector, but unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case either.
I have a harder time assesing Foster's strengths and weaknesses, but what I do know is that he was our starting RG for the vast majority of last season when Mendy ran for 1,300 plus and we came within an eyelash of winning the Super Bowl. I feel like Foster is more capable of creating push at the L.O.S. in the run game and I think that showed up in the second half of the Texans game. Guard is a tough position to evaluate from my couch in Wichita, but I sure don't percieve a major drop-off in pass blocking from Legs to Foster either. In short, I am just a bit confused as to why Foster seems to have lost his starting job to Legursky.
Anyone have a better perspective on this than I do?
A sub-note here is that I might be asking the wrong question given the dumpster fire that Kemoeatu has become. Perhaps we should be starting Legs AND Foster!
Off-topic, this is my first post on BTSC and I would like to give props to the care-takers of the site, as well as all the excellent contributors. What a wonderful exception the the general truth that Blogs are an annoying waste of my time. Good stuff BTSC, I start every day with a cup of coffee and a visit to this fantastic site - keep up the great work!
