The NFL needs to look at how the NHL is handling disciplinary issues and excessive hits.
- Hockey has an ex-player reviewing the hits and issuing the punishment. Best of all he was a tough player who dished out his share of hits. The NFL has a person who has never stepped on the field reviewing the hits.
- Hockey is issuing a video with each penalty explaining to the players, media and fans the rationale for the punishment or decision not to punish. The NFL notifies the player by mail and issues a list for the media.
The NFL needs to look at how Hockey reviews goals
- Hockey reviews all goals in a central location to ensure consistent interpretation of the rules. The NFL has a former part-time official look at the video and buzz down to the part-time referee on the field who goes under the hood to review the play among the screaming fans. If there was an error, the NFL headquarters will issue a statement the next day that there was an error that may have cost a team the game and the head coach his job.
The NFL does so many things better than anybody else. These are two areas that there is major room for improvement.
