Hampton, Smith, Kemoeatu Out For Steelers vs. Titans

DE Aaron Smith, NT Casey Hampton and LG Chris Kemoeatu have been ruled out of Sunday's Week 5 game against Tennessee, the Steelers reported Friday afternoon.

DE Brett Keisel will return to the lineup, moving back-up Ziggy Hood to Smith's left end position. Either Chris Hoke or Steve McClendon will start in place of Hampton. Doug Legursky also returns, and he will replace Kemoeatu at left guard, with Ramon Foster staying at right guard.

Star-divide

QB Ben Roethlisberger is probable with a foot injury he suffered in last week's 17-10 loss at Houston. RB Mewelde Moore and OLB Jason Worilds have both been ruled out for Sunday's game as well.

Rashard Mendenhall is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, and with Moore out, it looks like he'll have to play. Fortunately for the Steelers, it appears Isaac Redman is, as of right now, uninjured.

CB Cortez Allen rounds out the players the Steelers listed as questionable.

Both the offensive and defensive lines have dealt with new lineups multiple times in this young 2011 season. Keisel was playing at a high level before his knee injury kept him out the past two weeks. Legursky and Hood are now making their second starts of the season at a new position.

if I were playing Madden I would trade Mendehall for a lineman, start Redman, then wait for Baron Batch in 2012

Who is the other end

I’ve heard that Keisel will play Nose, so if that happens, who starts at the other end? Cam Heyward, or Chris Hoke? My guess we give the rook the start

McClendon will probably get his share of snaps at NT. I think he is better than Hoke and wish he would get more snaps. Maybe he has something

Agree with you on McClendon

Hope he gives us that push and quickness that we need up the middle. I don’t believe that his weight is 280. He looks well over 300.

What's wrong with Snack?

That will open up a lot of space for Chris Johnson.

Hampton out

Chris Johnson will run all over that defense.

With someone like Johnson I am more afraid of the outside. If Woodley doesn’t show up and Timmons struggled CJ might put up 200 yards.

They've been running over us with them

The ravens, Indy and Houston gutted us. I don’t think it should stop there. Farrior, Foote, Woodley, Snack have been horrible.

I’m looking foward to seeing Timmons on the outside. Maybe Woodley should be moved inside and see what happens.

Thinking DE Corbin Bryant will get call up from the practice squad ...

I don’t think they’d go with a gimpy Keisel and 4 other DL (2 not named Smith & Snack) for this game. gotta be licking your chops if you are Johnson.

Don't underestimate our "backups".

I think that we will be a LOT quicker and generate some sacks. It is their chance to show their worth. I am looking for them to play inspired ball. Our biggest worry will be to keep Ben upright. Am hoping they will throw more quick slants. This could possibly slow down the blitzes. We need to utilize our TE’s more – like other teams are doing. I will be nervous as usual, but I have faith in Ben IF they give him some time to throw.

Do I even have to say it?

Anyway, thought the run D might look better this week. With Big Snack out, I recant that statement.

Don't underestimate the combination of Hoke and McClendon.

They both are faster than Snack. Snack was giving us nothing as far as pass rush. Last week they also “ran” over him and Smith.

starks starting?

I read at Steelers Depot that Starks is going to get the start. Can anyone verify this?

I am ready to see that beast of a running back aka redzone redman tear it up sunday!

Steelers 3 best run defenders out = big day for Chris Johnson.

Flacco has to trust his receivers to make catches, but shouldn’t throw towards coverage. He needs to attack deep more often, but shouldn’t hold onto the ball so long. He needs to show more awareness in the pocket and move to extend plays, but nothing good comes of him leaving the pocket. He should run with the ball if nobody’s open, but he definitely can’t run with the ball.

Flacco should have the awareness of Roethlisberger, the elusiveness of Vick, the control of the offense of Manning, the leadership of Brady, the accuracy of Brees, and the arm strength of … Flacco? - Ampallang

I have always thought Snack, Smith and Harrison were the 3 key players in your run defense. Those guys are 3 of the best in the league in run defense. I would say them and Ray, Suggs, Ngata are the 2 best combos in the league at stopping the run.

Every week is

groundhog day so far. We’ve been somewhat spoiled compared to many teams the past few years. On the D anyway. I know Troy has been MIA a bit the past couple of years but the DLine seemed like one at a time with injuries. Let’s see what our depth is-

Nah, a lot of the guys aren't that old

I suspect that Gilbert is the only completely healthy starter on the o-line and the o-line is not that old. Mendy isn’t old either. We just have way to many people at all age groups who are beat up.

Looking forward to seeing Redman get most of the carries.

As for the D, I guess we’ll see what the Steelers’ future looks like on Sunday.

I am curious...

I’m not looking forward to the outcome of this game…I think. But I am excited to see how Lewis, Gilbert, the young D-Line, and Redman does.

Probably going to have to force 2 TO’s to have a chance, but they haven’t been able to do that all year. No INT’s is pretty bad.

by Andrew Hill on Oct 8, 2011 1:25 AM EDT reply actions

We're not likely to top the Defensive stat charts this year - we are spoiled for sure

just gotta win games and live to play another down

hopefully the lads feel as humbled by all of this

Hampton has cutblock PTSD, Smith is done ( and I say that respectfully), Harrison is the only baller out this week. Keisel is the key on D, a rotation with he, Hoke, McLendon, Hood, Heyward may not keep CJ2.6ypc as dormant as last year (CJ2.1ypc) but they will make plays, count on it. Timmons on the outside will be disruptive, Woodley needs to show his face.

Redman, all-day Redman Thank the Gods

and Hampton was the only surprise or major concern - get well soon

Anyone who had week 5 as the first week Smith would be out due to injury gets to cash in on the football pool. It’s a sad deal, but how idiotic was it that they kept him around after the last 2 years?

As for Kemo – if an olineman can’t block the run or pass and is out, will anybody notice? Answer is YES – it will be difficult for him to make a boneheaded penalty from the sidelines.
