Possible, Suprising 2012 Mock Draft
RD 1- Robert Lester, Alabama, S - Clark is still solid at FS but not spectacular. Lester is a ball hawking safety in the mold of Ed Reed. Love to see this guy paired with Troy.
RD 2- 1st Suprise(QB) - Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M, QB - Yes a QB in the second round. we need to plan for the future. Batch is 37 and Leftwitch is 32 and injured. Dixon is gone after this year. Why not select a QB now that we can groom. Batch can still last another year and teach tannehill. You heard it here first: Ben, Batch and Tannehill are going to be our 2012 QBs.
RD 3- Xavier Nixon, Florida, OT/OG - Position flexibility and from Florida so he'll get up to speed with the O-line real fast seeing as Pouncey, Gilbert and Starks are all from Florida as well.
RD 4- Lucas Nix, Pitt, OG/OT - Another player with position flexibility. I find he's actually much better than a fourth round talent but injuries cause him to slide. Worth the risk. 2012 O-Line = Starks, Nixon, Pouncey, Nix, Gilbert
RD 5- 2nd surprise(Late round NT) -T.J.Barnes, Georgia Tech., NT - I really don't see the point in spending a top pick on a nose tackle. The NT in the lebeau system is there to plug holes plain and simple. Hampton has started since day one and it's not because he graduated from Med School. Not to mention T.J. is 6'7" 330lbs. Try geting over or around that beast.
RD 6 - Adrien Cole, Louisiana Tech, ILB - I really believe that by next year our starting ILBs will be Timmons and Sly. Farrior will most likely retire. Cole and Foote as the backups are a great safety net.
RD 7 - 3rd surprise(FB) Joe Suhey, Penn. state, FB - With B.A. moving on from coaching to mow lawns, the Steelers finally get a true FB. His dad was a great FB for the Bears, so it's in the blood.

Could see us nabbing a qb,
but not in the 2nd.

2nd rounders typically receive 4 year contracts
so. in this scenario, Tannehill sits behind Ben for his entire rookie contract, maybe filling in admirably here and there because of injuries, then walks for a chance to start. thats an extremely high price to pay for no return on the investment. best case scenario we’re put in a Kevin Kolb situation and get a good trade offer, but A LOT of things have to go right for that to happen including Ben missing significant time. id rather resign Leftwich and sign another cheap vet like Chad Henne or something. once Ben hits 30 (i know its close, but not there yet) we can start drafting his replacement(s).

trade offer
The raiders gave up a 1st and a 2nd for Carson Palmer? I wonder what Ben and BA would be worth, in a package deal?
"They timed it perfectly, they just went too soon." - Darrell Waltrip commenting on an illegal restart.
oh and why is B.A. leaving?
i thought i read somewhere that he would definitely coach again at least next year

Didn't the FO sign him to 1 year deal before the season?
Maybe they are planning to go in a different direction after the season. They probably just resigned him because they didn’t want the players to try and learn a new offense during the lockout.

I am sure I won't be alone
But I don’t want a QB in the second. I think that will make Ben look over his shoulder and will cause strain in an offense that has real loyalty.
When the Eagles used 2nd round picks behind McNabb, you knew he was out of there soon. I really think we should get a QB this year and let Dixon go, but not before the 5th round.

I think
fourth is the earliest, but am fine with fifth. Steelers just need a solid rookie to learn to play behind Ben

Agreed
We need a solid backup who can take over if necessary. I just have no desire to get a replacement for Ben until he is closer to 34-35 at youngest.

true
no reason to make Ben nervous, or spend a high draft pick on someone that wont start.

Lester is not in the mold of Ed Reed
Not even close.
Ed was a two time All-American and an absolute beast at Miami: Lester might not even be the best safety on his team.
And probably not a good idea to forgo the LB position seeing as Farrior is almost 37 and Harrison is coming off two back surgeries.

I agree with the LB part.
There are multiple ILBs and OLBs who are worthy of a high draft pick and could really help us in case of injuries.
I understand wanting a new backup QB
But not in the 2nd. I would rather keep with veteran QBs as backups, I never like the idea of molding a 5th rounder or so into a backup QB, I’d rather just have a veteran

I agree with the general sentiment of people about the QB
I rather have veteran backup than a inexperinced guy at backup.
But I think this year the FO might look to trade up in the first or second if there is someone they really like, specially at MLB or NT.
The rest of the draft is fine, I think a true fullback it will help Mendenhall a lot.
Consequently, our offense will become less predictable.
Combine a fullback and anothes stud on o-line and we may have an complete offense, extremely productive in pass or running situations.
funny
I was thinking about when we start looking for Ben’s replacement earlier too. I think the 2014 draft is the earliest the front office seriously looks into drafting his future replacement.

QBs
I think the Steelers would like to pick up another QB, but not till the last 2 rounds,
round 1- LB or OL
2 – OL or LB
3 – CB/FS or DL
