Chris Kemoeatu demotion

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette announced today (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11327/1192078-100.stm) that LG Chris Kemoeatu has been demoted in favor of Doug Legursky. Kemoeatu's poor play of late is the reason cited for this.

Star-divide

It has become increasingly clear that "Big Juicy" is underplaying a 5 year 20 million dollar contract. Missed assignments, poor pass protection and a tendency for the occasional bone-headed fit of rage has made him one of the more up and down players on the team. While there is no doubting that he can deliver huge hits on pulls and traps and can be a really powerful run blocker, he never truly improved his mental game through his years as a starter.

This is probably the beginning of the end for him as a Steeler as the team is unlikely to carry his salary next year to ride the pine and will look to free agency or more likely to the draft to replace him.

I hear that

Guess we won’t be seeing Juicy show up to a meeting with a hotel menu instead of a playbook for long now…

The OL has been more like a MASH unit for most of the season...

….we’ll be seeing Kemo and his personal fouls a-plenty, no matter whether he’s listed as a starter or not. Legs may be healthy now, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

We haven’t seen the last of Kemoeatu. That’s a safe bet.

I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

Absolutely

But I do hope you’re wrong and the unit remains healthy for the remainder of the season. One can only hope…

True

Though the current configuration has been together since at least the Jacksonville game, no?

Spending time in Mike Tomlin's doghouse

has never hurt anyone. Just ask Mr. Mendenhall.

Kemoeatu is a staple in the running game. His pull-blocking is fantastic, and he should nevertheless get some reps on the O-line despite being formally a backup.

Life's a journey, not a destination.

This is my thinking

Really want Kemo to respond well to this and up his game and get his head together. If not, he is likely gone in the offseason.

He is our best run blocker, but a bit weak in pass blocking, but even with an All star OL in front of Ben he wont change his style of play, so I can let that slide a bit. Without Kemo our run game is a lot more limited, he blocks downhill like a boss

Still

Even with Roethlisberger’s style, it’s certainly easier for him to complete passes when he isn’t running for his life.

by pistil_stamen on Nov 25, 2011 2:26 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think he's done.

I think this is a wake-up call. Boneheadedness is unacceptable. Grow up, learn your position and play like a Steeler. Physically he’s incredible, but he’s got to get his head into the game.

My heros have always been Steelers...

At this point in his career, I don’t think he’s going to get any smarter. Hope you’re right, though…

Sadly

I agree…he’s had issues all the way back to his days at Utah if I recall correctly. Unless he goes on IR (lobotomy), I don’t think you are changing the way that guy is wired.

by pistil_stamen on Nov 25, 2011 2:28 AM EST up reply actions

No doubt

No doubt this is a good move, I just wish we had someone better than Legursky to put in there because I don’t think he has what it takes. This makes more obvious than it already was that the Steelers need to draft a G with #1 or #2.

by Yinzer from Myrralind on Nov 24, 2011 10:59 AM EST reply actions

I hate freaking Kemo but I also hate their ruining the continuity after so many games.

But they better not hesitate to put him back in if Legursky is struggling and gets ran over every play. Small players are no place for a linemen. Hopefully his athleticism keeps the trap and pull plays still effective.

This is the time to make the change

If you are going to make it. This gives the line time to gel against an opponent that we should beat even if there is a gaffe or two in o-line communication.

Agreed

Communication shouldn’t be a problem, Legursky is way smarter than Kemoeatu and has experience at the position. I think the move is not risky on a scheme/assignment standpoint, that was never a problem with the (not so) Big Legursky.

Bombers are the underdog

If we win it will be with defence because I don’t see our RBs having that much success against BCs defence.

This was a big move

We all expect the Steelers to draft some OL next year, so cutting this bloated salary will allow us to help our cap situation.

I am tired of Kemo making stupid mistakes and not making up for them with great play between the whistles.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Nov 24, 2011 11:47 AM EST reply actions

I agree

This move will allow us to see what we have at guard. I hope they draft a guard at some point, but if Legursky does not cut it, they should take a guard early in the draft. Foster seems to be doing OK at RG, so maybe we only need a long-term solution at LG. Maybe this ail also motivate Memo to get his act together, but I won’t hold my breath

by jmn501 on Nov 25, 2011 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

draft

I think the draft will determine whether Kemo has a job or not. If the BPA is o-line in the first two rounds then I expect the rookie will get the job. It is possible, assuming Colon is healthy, that Gilbert (assuming he can play the position) will go to LG and the rookie will be groomed but not start unless someone gets injured.

Move him to RG

Keep him at least until after the draft next year. Too many injuries.

by SNW on Nov 24, 2011 12:58 PM EST reply actions

I really don’t see how that would help. He would still be a poor pass blocker on that side and the boneheaded plays will follow him to any position.

by fbrrocket on Nov 26, 2011 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

He did help us in two Super Bowls...

…and frankly, if BA had paid attention to Kemo’s penetration into the 2nd level of Green Bay, and focused some more running plays in that direction, even with the Steelers behind, that game may have turned out different.

Our OL is too depleted, the injury bug has found a home within it; we can’t afford to jettison him. Make him compete for his position next year as if he was just joining the team, and decide then…until then, can’t afford to NOT have him.

i like

this line of thinking also. He will either respond to competition in camp, or make the new guy work that much harder. Either way, keeping him through training camp next season can’t hurt…. unless there are salary cap ramifications

by tkired on Nov 24, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

There are

He’s the team’s most paid lineman. Why spend that money on a guy who’s never going to give you more than he is right now. At this stage in his career it’s not going to get any better. You’ll need the money moving forward to resign your guys (Wallace is going to be expensive) or even to get somebody better through free agency.

don’t be shocked if we trade wallace. easier to find a speed receiver than a solid lineman. we could probably get a gurad and a draft pick for him.

Er, nope

I will be VERY surprised if that happens. Wallace is going to get his money. Hines retiring, Kemo out, cap up = space to resign Fast Money. The only way I see him moving is if he’s Franchised and somebody goes crazy with the money.

Giving Ben better pass protection. with Legs

Is more important in this game than having better run blocking with Kemo. We will draft a guard to replace Kemo in this years draft. If we keep Kemo it will be with intent of having him as the backup at a reduced salary. If he wants to stay?

by steeler fever on Nov 24, 2011 5:29 PM EST reply actions

agreed

the run game fair pretty well when legursky filled in for kemo earlier in the season.

by theChin on Nov 25, 2011 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

His pulling can be replaced by Pouncey. Dawson dominated in the outside running game, so can the kid. I like our chances in the run game if we’ve got Pouncey on a LB and the FULLLLLLBACK ARIANS on a DB.

Legs also give us more versatility, he can slide to C if the match ups are more favorable.

by malaki on Nov 25, 2011 12:04 AM EST reply actions

Legursky...

i don’t think he is the solution at LG for us, he got run over by Ngata all day in the first game and anytime he faces powerful men he can’t compete. Kemo gave up some stuff in pass protection yes, but the line has been playing well of late. You can’t slide him away from or to favourable matchups…if we play the Ravens again in the playoffs and the line Ngata up over him, you plan on sliding him to center to replace Pouncey and have two positions affected? Neither is a real solution just a stop gap…We need to draft a G.

by ColinP on Nov 25, 2011 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Watching the Ravens-Niners game

I looked at Carlos Rogers play and his 2.13 million salary he got out of free agency from the Niners looks real cheap right about now. This is why we can’t keep guys like Chris K. and B Mac next year. They were good contributors once upon a time here, but we have to move forward and get better players. Can’t afford to pay starter money on backups and that’s what Kemoeatu has become. He’s been outplayed by Ramon Foster who makes a fraction of his salary.

Dick, what would Woody (Hayes) say to you now: "He'd say, 'LeBeau, get your hair cut.'"

by Steelfrog on Nov 25, 2011 12:57 AM EST reply actions

The calculus is this:

In going from Kemo to Legs, is eliminating the bonehead personal fouls worth the reduction in power and pulling ability? 15yd personal fouls penalties can kill drives and take points off the board…especially in the red zone. I think we’ve seen this out of Kemo at least once this year. I think the coaching staff thinks the reduction in physicality can be planned around…where the surprise PF can’t be planned for and is governed by Murphy and his corollary.

Of course, it assumes Legs does not channel his inner Kemo and get a PF penalty.

by SteelheadOH on Nov 25, 2011 4:11 PM EST reply actions

Good thinking

I would say though, only power is sacrificed here, because Legs pulls very well, he does not have the powerful finish Kemo has, but once again, that’s a power issue. I think overall the decision is sound. I’d rather have a mentally solid group with an occasional physical disadvantage than the loose canon that we had at LG. Can’t scheme around that…

Dick, what would Woody (Hayes) say to you now: "He'd say, 'LeBeau, get your hair cut.'"

Kemo is blowing it.

This guy has the size and physical strength to be a solid NFL guard but his head keeps holding him back. I think he’s gone next season.

by Billy52 on Nov 25, 2011 7:38 PM EST reply actions

Finally

As they say, you just can’t fix stupid. Kemo has been in the league too long to continue making the same stupid mistakes. Boneheaded penalties, missed assignments in pass pro, and generally adding a huge suck factor 2 out of every 3 games is not acceptable. I don’t know if Legs is the answer, but if Kemo is then I hate the question.

Play Legs and see if he can be a solid guard. If not then draft one next year, but either way give Kemo an apple and a road map out of town.

by lkwdsteel on Nov 25, 2011 8:00 PM EST reply actions

still mad at him

for that bs play last year in sb- causing the steelers to have to go even MORE yards for what could have been a winning td. he plays like an ass sometimes, and as much as i prefer my players to have a mean streak- this guy- and suh- are helping to cost their teams games. my vote is to give chris one last shot- see if he FINALLY gets the message. with injuries- chances are hell be starting soon again anyway. i dont know what his signing bonus was like, but if he screws up one more time- id prefer to see him go if the financial hit is sustainable.

by mikebb on Nov 26, 2011 8:15 AM EST reply actions

please don't try and compare Kemo to Suh

Suh wins games for his team and is the best at his position in the game. Kemo is good at turning oxygen into CO2 and 3rd and 5’s into 3rd and 20’s. He also is pretty fantastic at blocking his imaginary friend on passing plays while trying to get our QB killed.

Suh is going through his angry phase as a 2nd year player on a career that could well land him in the HOF if he plays long enough. Kemo’s going through his “exit the league” phase after a career where he never was anywhere close to elite at his position. It’s like comparing a rusted out ford f-150 to an M1 tank. Kemo doesn’t deserve to ever be compared to someone like Suh.
