A question for Pittsburgh fans about some of your players....

Hello,

I am a big fan of the Utes from the University of Utah.  I am doing a story for my blog about some of our former players and I just wanted to get your opinion on the guys on your team.

Pittsburgh has Stevenson Sylvester and Chris Kemoeatu.

What are your thoughts on these two?  Have they lived up to your expectations?  Do you see them as guys who could stick around for a while?  Any memories of watching them?

Obviously, Sylvester hasn't done much besides special teams, but I just want your overall thoughts on these guys.

Thanks!

I have high hopes for Sylvester.

I hope he can take Farrior’s place in the future. At worst he will be one of our ST for his career something he is already good at. Kemo though I’ve had it with him. Great in the running game, meh in pass pro and maddeningly inconsistent. Add in the fact we have had him since 05 and his penchant for stupid penalties I’m ready to find his replacement.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Stevenson Sylvester

has been great on special teams. He started at ILB last week due to multiple injuries and didn’t fare particularly well. The jury is still out on whether he was just too nervous, too overmatched, or what. He’ll almost certainly get more time in the next few weeks and then we’ll know better what we’ve got.

Kemo has been a stalwart at LG for some time now. He’s a guy you love and you hate at the same time. He’s always been a good pulling guard in the run game, but not great in pass protection. However, injuries this season that he seems to be having trouble shaking have affected his game. (He played dreadfully earlier in the season in a week in which the only reason he was in the game was because there was no one else to play. Reportedly he basically didn’t have the use of one hand.) The big knock on Kemo is dumb penalties, particularly late hits. It’s an all-too common sight to see him trotting over to a pile and throwing himself on it, long after the whistle blows. I’m told that this is what they teach at Utah. True or not?

Hope this helps.

This is basically what I have seen out of these two.

Sylvester

He’s been great in limited spots, but looked weak in his start against the Pats. He got pushed around and couldn’t do much with a blocker on him. He’s looked good in space, but he looked bad working around blocks. I still have some hopes for him, but I’m now unsure whether he will ever be a starter or not. Might just be a career Keyaron Fox. Who knows.

Kemo is losing favor among Steelers fans at an alarming rate. He cannot pass block to save his life and it seems like the only time he can run block now is when he is pulling. Otherwise, he is just giving up free lanes to Ben or getting a penalty with a fine. I think Kemo would find his ass on the bench if Legursky was healthy, but that’s not been the story of our season.

Any word on how much longer Legursky is out?

Kemo scares me with his penalties. They will cost us a game sooner or later. I know Doug looked overmatched the first couple of games but I’d still like to see if he could fit in there somehow before we get to close to the off-season.

They said about a month like 3 weeks ago, right? I haven’t heard much about his injury. I think Kemo might be a better match up for the Ravens anyway.

In 2003, Kemo

was at Utah and he found himself in a pile up. Some guy on UNLV’s helmet popped up and Kemo kicked him right in the head, really really hard. The guy went into spasms right there, it was the most horrifying thing i ahve ever seen. Kemo was ejected and suspended. I guess his knack for getting dumb penalties hasn’t gone away…..too bad.

Yeah he's not the brightest guy

Dont take this personally, but more than a few of us want him gone this offseason.

Sylvester should be good down the line, he just needs to be more sure of what his responsibilities are so that he can play faster. He seemed unsure of himself last Sunday. He’ll have some trouble initially with lowering his pad level, but that can be corrected with coaching, which shouldn’t be that much of a problem because he has proven to be one of our most disciplined players on special teams.

Sly and Kemo

Sly has been a beast in the special teams, I kinda wish he would get more time at ILB, but thats Tomlins call. Still has a great future ahead of him, and it’s not like Harrison and Woodley were starters right off the bat….As for Kemo, I love his mean streak, when he’s “on”, I pity the defender in his way. His main problem is that he doesn’t know to turn it “off” when the whistle is blown and he makes some dumb penalties. He needs to find that balance between “mean” and “smart” and in this stage of his career, I don’t see it happening

Sylvester will be great in the traditon of Steelers LB's

He’s learning to play in the Labeau style and in the meantime excelling in ST’s as a good young LB should.

Kemo……great pulling guard! Mean as can be and makes some dumb plays at times. He’s a Steeler, nuff said.

I think Sylvester will be a regular starter someday.

Kemo could be a great NFL guard but he loses his cool (and his focus) too often. Even with his faults, though, Kemo is a better than average OL player.

Sylvester - good player, still learning

(or should I say, experiencing) the Steeler system. ILB is one of their most complex positions.

Kemo has to develop maturity or he’s gone. Had we not had so many OL injuries, I think he might have been history.

My heros have always been Steelers...

I have heard more than one former teammate

at utah say that Kemo never knew the playbook at Utah. He just found someone and hit them. Ever notice this in Pitt?

He sure knows the pulling playbook!

He is quick off the snap and goes to the correct gap and finds the correct person to hit with aggression.

every damned week

you rarely see him getting beaten physically, but it’s obvious when he blows his assignments and that’s far worse. I’d rather have someone getting bulled over in 2 seconds then have someone leave a clean path to the QB or RB. It’s as if he either STILL doesn’t grasp the playbook, or he can’t keep the play called in his head for the 10 seconds after the huddle breaks. Either way, I think and hope he’s on the way out. In truth the coaches have kind of messed up as of late and left him on the roster while cutting the wrong guy. Actually the real mistake was giving him a contract that they didn’t want to take a hit on. If he’s cut next year I think it will be $2M dead space which they might live with, but either way I don’t see him with the team beyond 2012.

I just read your story.

Very well written and sure to be of value to the Ute’s fanbase. I also read where you don’t have an NFL team. Man that too bad! Where do we sign you up for the Black and Gold?

I mean you and our QB even have the same name! You will jump on board just in time to watch us win ring #7 and it will cement you as a Steeler for life. Another good thing about being a Steeler fan is we are every where and no matter where you travel you will see Steeler attire and fans who love their team.

GO STEELERS!!!

I appreciate that!

yeah, I really have a lot of respect for the way that the steelers do things, and the way they play….

As Paul said to King Agrippa “almost thou persuadest me to be a Steelers fan” or something like that. :)

well as steeler fever said " I gotta seat saved for ya on the Steeler bandwagon, climb aboard Big Ben, heres a beer and a terrible towel, down the beer and start waving the towel."

Sly I have big hopes for in the next 2 years

but Kemo is brain dead. Sorry but he STILL makes too many stupid mistakes. After this long in the league there’s no excuse except that he’s just flat out stupid. The penalties and blown assignments are maddening most weeks. I have no hope because if he can’t get it figured out by now, then this is as good as he’ll ever be.
