Report: Ray Lewis Fined $20,000 For Hit on Hines Ward

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting Wednesday Ravens LB Ray Lewis has been fined $20,000 for a hit on Steelers WR Hines Ward that took him out of the game.

This news comes in wake of a $40,000 fine issued to Steelers FS Ryan Clark for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Ravens TE Ed Dickson.

Clark received a penalty for his hit, but Lewis did not.

Schefter reported Monday he expected fines for Clark and Lewis, as well as Steelers LB James Harrison. There hasn't been any news on Harrison just yet, but it's a good bet it'll be reported soon, considering the speed in which Clark's and Lewis's fines were reported.

Ward was visibly dazed when he was being assisted by trainers after the hit. He got up and walked off the field with a little help, but did not return. His helmet was immediately taken away.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in his press conference Tuesday Ward was "ok," and may be available to play Sunday at Cincinnati.

As a fan, I would have much rather seen Ray Ray go to prison. He certainly deserved to.

If the NFL really wants to cut out these hits

They should make them reviewable. An automatic review (like in TD situations) would prevent these hits from being missed. Flag the player, then move on without fines.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Nov 9, 2011 2:14 PM EST reply actions

I agree

What will make the players change their style won’t be the money, It’ll be losing games.

If Ray Lewis was ejected and the ball placed on the one yard line, you think they would stop with the H2H hits?

by IronJake on Nov 9, 2011 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Ejection may be a bit much, except for repeat offenders

Look at Clark’s hit—momentum carried Dickson’s helmet into Ryan’s. If H2Hs resulted in ejection, there is a chance Ryan may have been ejected, even though the flag was for a defenseless receiver. Since you really can’t review every play, there should be some leeway in the rule. Using Ray’s hit on Ward as an example. Harbaugh challenges the catch. Upon reviewing it is obvious that the hit was H2H, now, in the realm of player safety, the official can say there was H2H contact and even though we are overturning the catch, there is a 15 yard H2H penalty that will be assessed. To me, that is one way to show the players you are serious about reducing these hits, as well as telling the players it’s on video and if it is reviewed, we will still flag you for it. Right now there is no consistency so how do the players really know, or even take the consequences for this seriously.

Things can always be worse....

Like I said, if both lewis and clarke were ejected, players around the league would alter their playing style.

The only problem here is that there is no consistency in the calls. It would be just as ridiculous, because then lewis wouldn’t have been ejected and clarke would have.

They should put sensors in the helmets, and when it reaches a certain impact, the refs eject the player. Use technology. Increase the rosters to 73 or 83 players, reduce the contracts, and have players ejected every game, every team. That’ll say something about depth at positions, eh?

since Gooell is jsut a tool of the owners

that means NFL hates the Steelers. I guess they figure all owners should be incompetent.

What did Harrison do this time?

He hasn’t been giving mean looks at the opposing QB again, has he?

GODell is unfair

Why was Lewis fined 20 grand and clark was fined 40 grand?

Clark is a repeat offender

he was flagged/fined previously

That’s only because Ray Ray doesn’t get flagged or fined.

To be fair

Clark was only fined 15k for his first and Ray was fined 20k, so apperantly the league saw it as a more violent act

I am REALLY ticked.....

I understand that players possibly could have to sit a game for repeated offenses, but this is getting ridiculous. The severity of the hit on Hines was much more severe. It was to the back of the head and obviously intentional. Lewis left his feet as he launched himself towards Ward. Hines had no time to duck or respond. And he was taken out of the game for a concussion. A previous statement had been made about Hines from Suggs. This to me seems pre-meditated and intentional. AND he did not even receive a penalty for this. This would have been a crucial penalty against the Ravens. The Rooneys need to definitely address this immediately As for the fine for Harrison (whatever it is) I have not seen any photo showing why. Maybe it’s for scaring the hell out of Rice when he hurdled another Raven to get to Flacco. This is absurd. Enough is enough.

by Allen F on Nov 9, 2011 3:55 PM EST reply actions

So James Harrison hasn't gotten a fine, yet

Someone asked him if he thought Demaurice Smith should get involved with all these fines. His response? “Who is that”

haha

More on Clark /Dickson Hit

I just watched (again) the hit made by Ryan Clark. Dickson is 6 ft 4 inches and weighs 255. clark is 5 ft 11 inches. If you look at the collision closely you will see clark who is 5 inches shorter than Dickson dip his head (making himself even shorter) hit Dickson with the majority of the impact coming from the shoulders – not the head. Hope someone can put a couple of sequence photos of this on this site. I think that it will verify that what I am writing is true. I would like to know what GODell was viewing. Would like opinions (unbiased) on this – whether or not I am correct. I welcome any Ravens fan to try to dispute what I am writing. That is why I am ticked/pissed.

by Allen F on Nov 9, 2011 4:32 PM EST reply actions

You’re correct or at least one of the greatest coaches to ever coach this game agrees with you.

Some have suggested complicated solutions to this but in my opinion while they sound good having a clear standard for the referees on what constitutes a penalty and when it should or it should not be called would be enough. And then enforcing that throughout the season consistently.

Having actually read parts of the rulebook last year when this whole mess started in my opinion the main problem is that it’s written by a lawyer and is not something that is really usable for split second decisions.

And the problem is deeper than just the fines and H2H hits. I get the impression that more and more the referees are having trouble calling fair games.

I’m really not that upset by the team loosing as much as most here. There was a thread on here recently on what everybody thought was an enjoyable season and contrary to most I enjoyed the 2009 season even if we did not make the play-offs.

With the treatment that Ben recieved last year while convicted criminals get by without punishment and this on top bothers me enough that I’ll be giving the post-season a miss this year. And as long as this is not corrected I will not be buying anything the NFL has to offer in the future either.

Sorry other than the link it’s not really related to what you were asking for but I had to vent a little…

by axiomatic on Nov 9, 2011 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

Appreciate your opinion

I hope that someone can post those photos that I asked. I feel that I am 100% correct. It is only logical that if you bend your body to make a hit on a man 5 inches taller than you and don’t launch. You are not going to hit him helmet to helmet. The impact may make his body bend slightly and this could cause the helmets to come into contact with each other. Goodell’s office can run this frame by frame and then make an assessment. I hope that there can be a “fair” appeals process that will involve more than Goodell to make the determination. I suggest a board comprised of former players. This crap cannot continue or the NFL is going to lose a lot of viewers.

by Allen F on Nov 10, 2011 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

I do not give two shiznits that Clark is a repeat offender

there is no way that Lewis The Snitch should receive a fine that is half of Clark’s when Lewis is the one who knocked an opposing player out of the game.

Go die in a fire, Goodell.

by Riddlah. on Nov 9, 2011 6:13 PM EST reply actions

+1

Don’t wish him to die, but he needs to get “burned” the same way he is burning these players. I hope that it will not alter the way our players play the game. We have “hard hitters” . Should we be penalized for that? Time for a “new” Commish.

though I agree Goodell is an ass...

I hate the sentiment you have here. The Steelers have one of the highest if not the highest female fan base in the country and your suggestion that the problem with Goodell is that he’s really a woman is completely idiotic and really offensive to me. Call him evil, call him an idiot, say that he has it out for the Steelers but don’t insult a huge chunk of Steelers fan base by calling him a woman.

Whew boy im glad Roger isnt “Out to get the steelers” We played the refs in the last SB against “Mr Goodales team”….. We can do it again!! GO STEELERS!!! Simple math guys Change the teams colors+Change the names on the backs=NO FINES!!!!!!! Mr Rooney please address this issue. This has got to stop. PAST TIME FOR A NEW COMMISH!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is bullshit

How the hell was Clark’s hit worthy of 40,000 on what was a perfect hit (led with his shoulder) but Lewis’ hit which was clearly malicious and a blatant H2H only gets 20,000? This is fucking bullshit.
