Should Brown be the number #1 WR?

I just wanted to get some of your opinions about Brown. I know Wallace will always be a deep threat, but I have noticed Brown has been coming up big this year in a lot of your games. And may be a better number one option for Ben. I was also surprised to see him returning punts, but I would imagine as his role expands within the offense, he will return less.

And I'm pretty sure this is Hines Ward last year.

What is a number 1 receiver nowadays?

A Brown is getting the targets when it makes sense to give him the target, the same can be said for The Anchorman. I don’t think we need to categorise them as #1 and #2…

Why is the "football" not round and thrown around?

Someone

wrote a great post about this topic a few weeks back. It don’t matter what you call, they will get the ball when it’s time to get the ball. 25-30 pass attempts a game, they can’t all go to one guy. Even 8 a piece still leaves balls to distribute to the other receiving threats out there (Cotchery, Sanders when healthy, Miller, Saunders). So it doesn’t really matter who is “#1”

Doesn't he already get the most targets?

Or at the very least, him and Wallace get the same amount.

EXACTLY!

Why do we need a designated #1? Does Green Bay have one WR who’s #1? Hell no, they have three or even four guys, if you want to include their TE, who are all dangerous and equally capable of killing defenses on every given play. A QB’s job isn’t to find the #1 receiver anymore, it’s to find the open guy, regardless of the # on his jersey.

Go big or go home!!

On

Wallace from ESPN. Link

He’s being compared to Calvin Johnson as the “biggest gamebreaker” Can be summed up by this

That shows his overall dominance, but for the sake of this discussion, it should be noted that he gained 154 more yards than Johnson last season (1,295 to 1,141) despite being targeted 40 fewer times (134 for Johnson vs. 94 for Wallace). Wallace also had a better touchdown-to-target ratio (once every 9.4 passes vs. once every 11.2 targets for Johnson).

No matter which way you look at, Wallace bests Johnson. At the moment, that makes him the heavyweight champion of NFL wide receivers.

Mike’s really good, so if Antonio is our #1, we’re sitting pretty.

I believe the labeling of a #1 WR is becoming a aberration, much like the “featured back”. With today’s NFL and it being more offensive friendly (considering the illegal contact rules), teams that have multiple targets are more prepared then teams with a #1 WR followed by role players at the other spots.

Numbers are for depth chart purposes. It becomes cloudy as far as our Steelers are concerned. Ward was Numero Uno on our depth chart at one time and now we debate if it is to be Wallace or Brown. They are both number Ones. Who is our 3rd? Sanders? Ward? Cotchery? WR by comittee? LOL. Great problem to have indeed.

I'd sooner get Flacco'd out here in the middle of nowhere than lose face in front of my friends and family.

by steeltech on Dec 11, 2011 11:46 AM EST reply actions

There is no depth chart for WR…

We have a flanker, a split end and a slot WR, each of those has a backup.

NO!

Wallace gets double covered almost always, while brown is receiving single coverage.

Both are great WR's who are still developing.

However, Wallace it the number one. nycsteeler said it as I was typing this, Wallace is drawing double coverage which is what is freeing up Brown.

I remember a couple of years ago we were debating who was going to be our no.3 WR

could it be Wallace, McDonald(remember him),and now the debate has turned to who is our no1 WR. Wallace? Brown? Great job by our FO in drafting these key players.
Wallace
Brown
Sanders
Cotchery
Ward
as of this year, now next year
Wallace
Brown
Sanders
Cotchery
? Maybe another late round sleeper

don't think cotchery will be back

I’d let him go sign Plex and just go with 5 WRs or add Battle back but we really dont need him since Special teams is taken care of.

I love the Steelers.

there you are with that Plax stuff again. It’s not going to happen, I promise.
However, I do believe Cotch will be back, he is valuable as a good veteran team mate. And he’s dirt cheap. He fits the Steeler way in a way that Plax never could/will

Plex isn't going to be a #1, 2 or 3 with the Steelers

Would he be happy with that? Cotchery seems like a team first type of guy who is willing to go to the mat to get the win. Plex, on the other hand, needs a paycheck. Plex will want big bucks while Cotchery wants a ring. Cotchery is the guy to take for the Steelers.

that is just some of the reasoning I use while thinking Cotch will be back. For some reason tann is obsessed with getting Plax back, even though we all know he wanted more money than the Steelers were willing to offer. No way a head case like that will be fine being in Cotch’s position. And, on top of that, he would be the fourth best receiver on the team.
Cotch will be back in my opinion, because they can always afford to pay another 600k more than they can afford to pay Plax whatever he wants (which is too much)

All of his statements to the media (Cotchery’s) indicate he likes this “team” culture of the Steelers, and I’m sure he wants a chance for a ring.

I see him coming back, provided the Steelers can make the money work (but I don’t mean that Cotch will be asking for boatloads, just that there is that little “cap” issue hanging over our heads)

Plex had his chance here anyway, he signed with the Jets, I would rather have Cotchery.

Plax isn’t going to play for the same 600k salary that Cotch gets. Cotch is better at this point anyway

what makes you think Cotch is satisfied with a 600 k salary?

He might get a pay raise or he can also be gone. I believe Plax will never be a Steeler. With our great skills of drafting receiver lately, I say draft another late round sleeper. Someone with a chip on his shoulder who is a team first player.

Cotchery will be back

Cotchery is a replacement for Ward, tough hard-nosed veteran who is faster and younger than Ward. If Ward comes back next season he will continue to be a 4th or 5th receiver. Plax will never be back. The Steelers gave him a second opportunity and he decided elsewhere, he was lucky to get a second look. Wallace, Brown, Sanders, Cotchery, Ward, Battle, Grisham, and (insert draft choice here) will be in training camp next season. That will probably be the order of importance.

by Piratefan13 on Dec 12, 2011 6:57 AM EST up reply actions

Who's #1?

That’s something that the opposition determines in my opinion. Wallace is the clear #1 because our opponents double cover him all game. This leaves Brown open and is the reason he gets more targets.

As soon as the defenses decide to double cover Brown, then we’ll see Wallace go nuts again. It’s kind of like the old Irvin vs Harper debate. There was a long stretch where Harper made more clutch plays for the Cowboys than Irvin, and it wasn’t until Harper left via free agency that everyone understood that he was a clear #2. I’m not saying Brown isn’t a #1 potentially, but until defenses decide he deserves the double teams then Wallace is the consensus #1 on this team.

by lkwdsteel on Dec 11, 2011 1:25 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I don't think we need to make any distintion

NFL defenses will do that. Right now, Mike Wallace is being double-teamed, helping Brown get open. Should defenses double-team Brown, Mike Wallace will surely see his numbers spike again. We are very blessed to have two WR’s of this caliber, as well as Sanders, Cotchery and Ward to make a balanced passing attack. I don’t think it matters who is considered #1 on the depth chart.

All of that said, Mike Wallace is still the better WR at this point.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Dec 11, 2011 2:54 PM EST reply actions

Big Ben has always been a “Throw to whos open” Quarterback. Thats why Brown is getting so many catches, because he is doing his job. Distinguishing numbers such as #1 or #2 receiver is near pointless. It is better to know them as outside or slot receivers.

Look at last year, only 18 receptions separated our top 3 targets: 60 for Wallace, 59 for Hines and 42 for Miller.

Compare that to a team like Atlanta last season whos top 3 targets were separated by a whopping 71 receptions: 115 for White, 70 for Gonzalez and then 44 for Snelling.

This season is nearly exactly the same. Our top 3 receivers are separated by a mere 19 receptions. Wallace has 62, Brown has 55 and Miller has 43.

Now that to me looks like a dangerous offense.

Embarrassment of riches and no Number 1....

Different guys play in different packages and different sets. There is a lot of pride in the wide receiver room, but not much ego. Hines Ward has worked so hard teaching these young guys, and part of that lesson is that they respect one another so much.

Did anyone see Downtown Tony Brown on the NFL network after the Cleveland game, talking about how much Hines Ward means to him and to everyone else? These guys are HIines’ pups and damned proud of it.

That said, Brown is a very special talent, and clearly the best of an extraordinary group of men. The sky is the limit for him.

And Cotchery is a high-quality individual who has found a home where he is appreciated and shares the same values with his teammates, the coaching staff, and the front office. Jerrico ain’t goin’ nowhere. When Ryan Clark told him, “we do things differently here,” Cotchery took that to heart, and from all indications, he’ll leave money on the table to stay with the Black and Gold.

I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

I am truely hoping that Wallace, then later Brown and Sanders, see the difference between a couple of million dollars, and the chance to contend for a ring year after year. Sure, they could get paid more by the Clevelands, Cincys, Buffalos, KCs, Arizonas, etc, but would they ever, consistently, have a legitimate shot at multiple Super Bowls? I think not.

Here’s hoping they have total bought into the “Steeler Way”; if anyone can inculcate the Steeler Way, it would be Heinz.

Ben is the key.

WRs will come and go but Ben will always be the guy making them look good with his pinpoint passes. AB and Wallace are great, to be sure, but I’ll take two receivers from a lot of the other teams in the NFL, team them up with Ben and show you some gaudy stats. When the Steeler receivers drop passes, it’s usually because they’re surprised that the ball is exactly where it’s supposed to be almost every time.

by Billy52 on Dec 12, 2011 8:51 PM EST reply actions

My $.02

It seems that in so many ways Brown already IS Ben’s #1 receiver. But since he spreads the ball around so much, gets EVERYONE involved, and throws to the guy who ie open, it really doesnt matter.

I am not sure if Ben has a true #1 receiver on any given play!

Just the fact that we're having this discission is freakin' awesome!

Look at the talent of our WR corps, and look at how we got them…..I may be off a little, but wasn’t Wallace 3rd round, Manny 3rd round & AB 6th round? or somewhere thereabouts anyway….top of the league talent at bargain basement prices, how can you beat that??….we have the best FO in the league, it sure is fun being a Steeler fan these days!
