Pouncey 'Not Expected' To Play, Roethlisberger May Miss Monday Night
Post-Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac tweeted Saturday C Maurkice Pouncey isn't expected to play in Pittsburgh's Week 15 game at San Francisco. He's recovering from a high ankle sprain sustained in Week 14.
QB Ben Roethlisberger was limited in practice Friday, and did not practice Thursday. If he cannot practice today, he will not play Monday.
Starting LG Doug Legursky will replace Pouncey at center, and veteran OL Trai Essex will move over to the left guard position.
QB Charlie Batch will start in place of Roethlisberger.
It's a rough game to be without Pouncey or Roethlisberger. San Francisco is the league's top scoring defense (14 points a game), and is fourth in yards per game (305.1). With the Steelers trailing only San Francisco in scoring defense (15.2, and having surrendered just 19 points in their last three games (3-0), it looks like the defense will have to step up if Pittsburgh is to pull off a road win.
SS Troy Polamalu has been limited in practice this week, but is still expected to play. Jason Worilds, who will start over the suspended James Harrison, may face a back-up himself, as it appears LT Joe Staley may not be able to play for the 49ers. Staley suffered concussion-like symptoms in San Francisco's 21-19 loss at Arizona in Week 14. Alex Boone would replace him in that situation.

Ok Neal
We have gone over this, but I get the feeling you don’t get it. Can you PLEASE stop with the bad news? Enough is enough man…come on.
:)
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
An editor once told me, “when covering a team, 75 percent of your news stories will be negative.”
Clearly, mine are closer to 90 percent. That’s what I love about this team though. I write about adversity during the week, and my game story is always about how they overcame it for a win.
Gotta be honest…not feelin’ great about this one. Lots of things working against us this week.

I would almost go ahead and rest everyone that is damaged.
Take my chances and almost treat it like a bye week. I doubt the Ravens are going to let go of the AFC North lead and if they win, then us winning out doesn’t improve our position in the playoffs.
Get everyone well and roll in the playoffs.
Tell Tomlin I have spoken and give him my permission to use my game plan.

Is Woodley playing
I haven’t heard anything on him with all the Ben and Pouncey news. And if so, do you move Worlids to ROLB after he’s played left for like 6 games. Seems like a hard switch.
Woodley
…isn’t even listed on the injury report, so he’ll play for sure.
If he tweaks it again (a reasonable concern, he only lasted 13 plays when he came back the first time), I would think they’d move Timmons to ROLB and shift Worilds over. Timmons has more experience on the right side, Worilds could play either position.
Foote would replace Timmons at the buck LB spot.
Since we have no OLB depth behind Timmons, let’s hope this doesn’t happen.

How is our medical staff?
Do we have backups for them? How many doctors and trainers do we carry on our medical roster?

I’m sure there’s at least one medical staffer out with a hamstring injury this week. Not enough cap room to sign another one.

I though Coach Tomlin said that Ben will play if he practiced once
not exact words but he wanted Ben to practice at least once in order to play.
Lets go D! Need you guys to step up!
"Franco made that play because he never quit on the play. He kept running, he kept hustling. Good things happen to people who hustle."
The last practice (typically on Friday) is when they go through the most stuff. If a player doesn’t practice on Friday, it’s rare they’ll play Sunday. By that point, teams will go with the back-up 100 percent in an effort to get him prepared for the game. If Ben’s not able to practice on Friday, they have to use practice time to get Batch ready to play.
That doesn’t mean Ben won’t play, though. He was limited, and they do have an extra day. I think the issue the Steelers run into is a super long plane flight pretty much takes out most of Saturday. Up early for a walkthrough on Sunday, I think they will have had to prepare Charlie to play Friday. There’s just not enough time.
by Neal Coolong on Dec 17, 2011 11:33 AM EST up reply actions
Ben practiced today
Just like Friday, he was limited.
I also wonder how much of this is gamesmanship. If your the 49’ers, which QB do you prepare for? The offensive game isn’t going to be the same for both QB’s, and either will the play calling tendencies.

Charlie "osteoporosis" Batch
I couldn’t believe Batch was sacked against the Browns and he didn’t break a bone! Ben is probably going to start Monday but if he has problems and they have to bring in Charlie they better have the medical crew ready with a stretcher for old fragile Mr. Osteoporosis Charlie.
Word is...
…no media members saw him practice. The team said he did, though. Not trying to call them liars or anything, but they have a lot more to gain by making San Francisco prepare for both Ben and Chaz than they do saying he’s not going to play.
They can list him as questionable all week, put him in pads, have him warm up but never intend to start him.
That being said, I’d bet he’s not going to play.

Pouncey will, too.

I grudingly feel the same way
We are “almost” a definite for WildCard. If we go into the play offs at full strength (Woodley, Pouncey, Ben and Sanders healed and Harrison not suspended again) we are capable of beating anyone – anywhere. I still think that we would stand a better chance of winning with Dixon at QB instead of Batch. Also, both Batch and Dixon are injury prone. We will have a very low point output with Batch. But, if it gives us a “W” that is just fine with me. I might need a little Hennessey or Johnny Blue to keep me calm (LOL).
Hear ya on the Adult Beverages
I took Tuesday off being there might be a hangover coming. With the suspensions and the injuries this will be a tough game but winnable.

The crew has a whole day to plan after the Ratbird/Bolt game
I imagine there might be some contingency plans being worked up.
but not having Pouncey in against a already stiff run D will make for some tough sledding.
Time for Redman to step in and pound it.
and, strangely enough, I feel pretty good about Charlie B, especially after he’s had a week to plan & practice with the y$c.
Bound to cover just a little more ground.
The Ravens/Chargers game does not affect the Steelers at all.
Think of it this way, The No. 1 seed is still in play, a first round bye is still in play, a divisional championship is still in play and a wild card berth is still in play.
It’s possible for the Steelers to finish anywhere from 1 to 8 in the AFC. Baltimore winning or losing affects that, but not as much as Pittsburgh losing does. The Jets could win out and take the 5 seed, meaning they travel to Denver or Oakland for their first round game. If they finish as the 6 seed, they travel to either Houston, Baltimore or New England.
I’d much rather be the 5 seed than the 6 seed right now, so winning Monday Night has as much to do with the wild card seed as it does winning the division.
Regardless, running the ball will be tougher Monday than it has been at any other point this season – arguably last season too.

I dunno
If we’re down by less than a TD in the 4th qtr, I’d be a lot more likely to go for broke if the Ratbirds lost on Sunday. Being able to almost lock down the division would be huge.
Hopefully Batch will step up and dominate, making it a moot point.
Bound to cover just a little more ground.

Ravens finish at Cincy
The last game of the season for both teams could still be huge if the Steelers and Ravens both lose this weekend. Steelers play at Cleveland, and Baltimore visits Cincinnati. The Browns may be not motivated, while the Bengals could be playing for a wildcard.
Even with all the injuries, the Steelers can beat San Fran, Batch and the offensive line must play well.
I think special teams will be the ultimate factor here. They’re hurt too. Neither Staley nor Willis look like they’ll play, and their line has been probably the worst in the game over the last three weeks.
They’ve got a much better kicker and an elite-level return unit on both punts and kicks. We’ve been bend-but-don’t-break on kicks. Done well on punts, but we give up 25 yards a kick return. Almost seems like our opponent’s are just one step away from breaking one. This would be the team to do it.
If anyone’s not going to be “motivated” in Week 17, it’s possibly Baltimore or Pittsburgh. Cleveland’s eliminated and if Cincinnati is eliminated by then too, they’re still going to play hard because they want to keep their jobs. The Ravens and Steelers likely will have clinched a playoff spot by then, and the seeds could be locked up that week too.
by Neal Coolong on Dec 17, 2011 11:46 AM EST up reply actions
I agree about Special Teams play
We must bottle up Ted Ginn. We also need to keep pressure on Alex Smith. He is not good under pressure. I hope that Casey will do a number on the Center and give Smith a lot of pressure up the middle. Our defense will probably win this game for us. Batch needs to go with the quick hitters. Short and medium range passes and also utilize our gifted TE’s also. He will not be throwing any “bombs”. I think that this will be a low scoring game.
Prediction
Steelers win. They win big. Pouncey out, Legursky in. Batch plays, Mendy and Redman combine for over 150 yards. Wallace catches a 40+ yard td. Defense gets a turnover, and Brown get great field position every kick.
You're dreaming
Nobody rushing for 150 against the 49ers, especially not with the Steelers’ weak offensive line and missing Pouncey. I’ve no doubt Wallace will be open for long TD passes, but I’m worried Batch can’t pass it that far. If the Steelers win, its going to be a close one. I agree, though, that getting a turnover would be key. Unfortunately, the 49ers just don’t turn the ball over very often.
You are seriously overating the 49ers
We can blow them out. Don’t be surprised. They already have their weak division locked up so we are going to have a lot more motivation than the gold diggers will have to win this game.
Questioning Pouncey's toughness
I am new to this post, but a life long Steeler fan who bleeds black and gold.
I suspect Ben will play Monday. I also suspect Polamalu will also. I am more concerned about Woodley who I think is the best of the Steeler linebackers.
Having said all of this … Am I the only one out there who is really starting to question Pouncey’s toughness? To begin with, although I think he is a very good center, I am a little tired of everyone rating him with Webster and Dawson. He has a long way to go to be characterized with those guys. To be terribly blunt, I think at this stage in his career he is over-rated. But more to the point, and in light of the courage show week in and week out by Ben and Troy, Pouncey’s constantly taking himself out of games is getting embarassing. I also thought he could have played in the Super Bowl last year and his absence cost of the game. In light of all of this, I wonder if this guy has the heart of a Steeler? How is that for a controversial first post???
How is that for a controversial first post???
If you said this at a Steelers fan convention, I may recommend you bring some security with you.
Just kidding, all Steelers-related opinions are accepted here. I respect your right for saying it, but I don’t really agree. When you’re violently ill like he was against Kansas City, you really just aren’t any good. You can’t play at the level you need to play at, so I’d say, if anything, him taking himself out of the game shows he’s concerned about the team. Or he just needed to get into the bathroom really badly.
The Super Bowl…He broke his ankle, there’s no way he could play two weeks later. And in the AFC Championship game, he was playing the best football of his career until he got hurt. We won that game because of his up-front blocking, Mendenhall’s running, Ike Taylor’s strip-sack and two of Ben’s passes.
(on a side note, we lost the Super Bowl because the Packers receivers as a whole were better than our secondary depth. That, and Mendenhall’s fumble.)
I haven’t ever compared Pouncey to Dawson or Webster, and I think anyone who mentions their names together is saying more he has the opportunity to be another great Steelers center.
That being said, I don’t think he’s playing as well this year as he was last year. I also think he’s gotten far less help. The guard play last year was considerably better than it is this year.
It’s possible the guards are worse because Pouncey is worse, but either way, the interior line hasn’t played well and all of them share some blame.
I don’t think questioning his toughness is merited right now. Very few linemen would play on a high ankle sprain that soon after getting it. Those are really bad injuries and take a long time from which to recover. A healthy Legursky is better than a 50 percent Pouncey.
Welcome to the site, though, feel free to post more controversy!
by Neal Coolong on Dec 17, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions
Indeed, on Pouncey
Well-said. I honestly get tired of people who don’t play questioning the toughness of players from the comfort of their living room. Unless the player in question is Matt Spaeth, in which case, that’s fine.
While at Florida, Pouncey played a couple games through a sports hernia- some analyst on ESPN (former player, forget who) was talking about it, and said “on a scale of toughness from 1-10, that rates about a 30”. Figure that’s about right.
Oh, and Neal, I recently saw this, and given your comments regarding Seymour punching a lot of people (Woodson too), thought you might enjoy this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILvkEHQPHHg

Great points, Neal. I don’t think much needs to be added.
Although, the point about Woodley being the Steelers best LB is not true. That’s still James Harrison. I don’t mean that to be a slight at Woodley, just ultimate praise for Deebo.

Am I the only one out there who is really starting to question Pouncey’s toughness?
I think you’re flying solo on this one.
Silly
I think one of the most foolish things a fan can say is to question the toughness of a player. So Pouncey is not tough because he can’t play on an injury that no human being is expected to play on. Also, as for KC, how about you tell me when you have serious diarrhea and vomiting and I will come to your house to punch you in the stomach. If you can function, then I will agree with you. Now, obviously, I am not threatening to punch you in the stomach, but lineman get hit in the midsection and chest on every play. Not only does the illness make them physically weak, but it also makes it somewhat likely that the player would have an accident on the field.
Whoever compares Pouncey to Webster or Dawson is being homerish. He has not even completed 2 years of time. Neither Webster nor Dawson were alltime greats in their second year. They were very good players who were on their way, which is where Pouncey is now. I would agree that he has taken a step backwards, but I would suggest that he has been the lone consistent player on a below average line.
To Neal, we also lost the game due to Ben’s pick 6 which was primarily poor blocking that caused Ben to get hit on the throw.
I am a realist and nearly agree.....
I am not saying he is not tough but I would like to see him put a string of games together without being hurt. I think he is tough as hell but injury prone.
It is really ballsy to express your opinion here.( One that is even slighly derogatory) By this time tomorrow there will be an arms lenght of people insulting you and wanting you to give examples and stats for every play and player in the NFL for the last 20 years to support your thoery.
Hans in there, it doesn’t get better, you just learn to deal with the threats of banishment and insults.
I shall fart in your general direction.

Pouncey out, Harrison out, Ben banged up, Woodley coming off a hammy injury
I say rest Ben at this point. We are already far from full strength, and Ben will play on that ankle even if he really shouldn’t. 1st round byes are overrated IMO. In the past 5 years I can think of three teams that came into the playoffs as the #5 or #6 seed, and went all the way to the superbowl and won it (Steelers, Giants, Packers). If Ben re injures that ankle, he is most likely gonna be in a very bad spot. Ben is just so damn tough, they called that sprain of his a grade 1?….His ankle was bent 90 degrees straight out under 300 lbs of Dlinemen, I highly suspect that his ankle is injured more than is being let on. I would just hate to see Ben man up and play on Monday only for him to get re injured and miss significant time and/or do serious long-term damage to the ligaments in his ankle. Considering that even if we do win on Monday there is still a good chance we will still be the #5 seed at the end of the season. Big Ben sustains entirely too many injuries, I want him to be around for another 10 years, playing at a high level into his late 30’s. At this rate his body might give out on him prematurely.
Team has officially listed Pouncey out
and BR questionable for Monday.
My guess.
If the Ravens lose, BB will give it go. Tomlin will go with his arm for some early scores then bring in Batch with a healthy dose of Mendy and Redman.
If the Ravens win, then BB will give it a try but come out on his own.
I hope the cast works and the swelling is down.

Do not agree with "rest 'em" strategy
This is still a meaningful game. We can use the rest ’em plan against St. Louis (or even Cleveland, for that matter). But this game is a Monday Night national game with Tirico, Jaworski and Gruden in the booth. The players live for these kinds of games. And this game still has plenty of meaning. We are in a stare-down with the Ravens at the moment and the first guy who blinks loses.
My sense is that any player upright on Monday evening will be playing. it is possible that a single quarter of Ben at the controls could give us the winning edge. That is why he had the brace made. We may see all 3 QBs before the night is over. But Ben might make all the difference.
