Polamalu, Pouncey, Wallace and Brown named AFC Pro Bowl Starters, Roethlisberger a Back-Up

The Steelers had four players named as starters on the 2012 AFC Pro Bowl team, and one as a back-up.

SS Troy Polamalu, WR Mike Wallace, KR Antonio Brown and C Maurkice Pouncey were selected as starters, and QB Ben Roethlisberger is a back-up QB behind Tom Brady, the AFC's starting QB.

Star-divide

Brown had a great year as a receiver, but he was named to the Pro Bowl team as a kick returner.

It marks the first year since 2006 the Steelers did not have an outside linebacker named to the team.

While neither Polamalu nor Wallace are seen as surprise starters, Pouncey is somewhat of a surprise. The Steelers running game has dropped off a bit from where it was last year. Pouncey has had several different players lining up at both guard positions throughout the year, and he has been the Steelers' best run and pass defender.

Roethlisberger and Brady are joined by San Diego's Phillip Rivers.

Baltimore's Ray Rice, Houston's Arian Foster and Jacksonville's Maurice Jones-Drew are the running backs with Batimore's Vonta Leach is the fullback.

Wallace is joined by New England's Wes Welker, Miami's Brandon Marshall and Cincinnati's A.J. Green as the receivers.

The tight ends are Rob Gronkowski and San Diego's Antonio Gates.

Cleveland's Joe Thomas, Miami's Jake Long and New York's D'Brickashaw Ferguson are the offensive tackles. Marshal Yanda (Baltimore), Brian Waters (New England) and Logan Mankins (New England) are the offensive guards for the AFC.

Pouncey is joined by New York's Nick Mangold at the center position.

On the defensive side of the ball are some familiar names in the AFC.

At defensive end, Indianapolis' Dwight Freeney and New England's Andre Carter joined Denver's Elvis Dumervil. Baltimore's Haloti Ngata, New England's Vince Wilfork and Oakland's Richard Seymour are the defensive tackles.

Baltimore's Terrell Suggs, Kansas City's Tamba Hali and Denver rookie Von Miller are the outside linebackers.

The inside linebackers are Baltimore's Ray Lewis and Kansas City's Derrick Johnson.

At cornerback, New York's Darrelle Revis, Houston's Jonathan Joseph and Denver's Champ Bailey were named to the team.

Polamalu is joined by Baltimore's Ed Reed and San Diego's Eric Weddle at the safety positions.

god damn it

how many years can ray lewis make the pro bowl off of nothing but his name? anyway, antonio brown was a bit of a suprise, and i dont think pouncey was that deserving this year, but i guess the pro bowl is a reputation based system anyway, especially with positions where there arent many statistics to judge by.

I don’t think Ray is worthy of a vote to the pro bowl this year considering all his injuries. Screw it though he can enjoy himself in Hawaii while we take the crown (hopefully!).

After watching him against San Diego

There’s no way he should get in this year. It’s a crime.

Not that Timmons outplayed him by any means. Timmons was clearly his best competition last year, and got robbed.

Ridiculous

Brian Cushing – 110 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 INT, 2 FF

D’Qwell Jackson – 145 tackles (107 solo)!, 3.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF

Ray Lewis – 88 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF – Send him to Hawaii!

This makes almost as much sense as Dwight Freeney getting picked despite not even being the best DE on his own team this year.

Ray Lewis, Antonio Gates, and Champ Bailey

all made it based on their names this year, with others at the position much more deserving. Champ Bailey is still good, but not a pro bowler, Antonio Gates is still a pro bowler but was injured alot this year……and Ray Lewis is an old old player who couldn’t cover my grandma over the middle of the field, and ive seen a couple RBs abuse him this year. Ray Lewis in the pro bowl every year is getting totally ridiculous. Even Ravens fans know Lewis is way over the hill at this point.

Ike Taylor got snubbed. Glad to see Antonio Brown get in as a returner, he might not of been the best returner in the AFC per se, but his great returning abilities, combined with his outstanding receiving abilities, he had to get in the pro bowl somehow. If Woodley and/or Harrison could of played 16 games this year one of those OLB spots would have been thiers, possibly even both.

Def agree on Ike

He has had an excellent year, and only Revis has clearly outplayed him, and even there, Revis has had a drop-off year.

His breakout year will be when the dude gets voted ALL-PRO

Thats the hype that surrounds him at the start of every year for the last few seasons. That he is set to BLOW UP, and become a true DOMINANT force, along the likes of Patrick Lewis, or Ray Ray (in his prime of course). We’ve yet to see that. Sure he is a good solid player. He’s got off the chart measureables. But noone talks about game planning for him in the same manner as Harrison, Polamalu, or even ASmith (in his prime of course).
He’s still only 25, so maybe NEXT year we will see him take that quantam leap to STUDLINESS.

Stay thirsty my friends.

I like Pouncey a lot

Think he had a great rookie season, and is going to have an exceptional career.

I don’t think he earned the Pro Bowl this year, due to injuries, illness, and a dropoff in performance because the interior of the offensive line has been awful. Not his fault per se, but it goes to show that Pro Bowl balloting is pretty much a sham.

He should run with the ball if nobody’s open, but he definitely can’t run with the ball.

That said..it’s a popularity contest. All-pro is a more accurate representation of a players accomplishments. I can’t say I care who anyone picks. I don’t need the general public to validate my feelings on any Steeler player. I know the deal

Especially about letting the fans vote. I think Ben should be there for sure. Good for him. Troy should always be there as long as he is doing up to 78% of what he has been for the past few years, Did Rick Harmon not see him play on Saturday??? I say let the players and coaches and pros (not media) decide. Those people know the value of the players out there. In fact, I’d love only to allow those players and coaches who have to prepare for the positions of their opponents make votes for those positions. That would be an truly All-Pro team. One can only dream.

Having said that, the rules are what they are, so I voted my ass off for.. Ben, Wallace, Brown (who should have been there as a receiver IMHO), Troy, Harrison, and Pouncey. I know what they bring to the team. I also voted for Ike, but I figured they’d never let a CB with 2 picks in the the game.

BA screws up again

Packers FB John Kuhn earns a trip to the pro bowl -and we got rid of him after drafting him. BA’s stubburness not to use a full back proper, hurts our running game (and therefore the passing attack) and not too long ago we had a pro-bowl FB on our roster !!!
OH BA when will you learn ?

by Sch Lotan on Dec 28, 2011 3:36 AM EST reply actions

kuhn was let go when Krieder and Carey davis were still on the roster

and the our last pro bowl FB was Earnest Jackson in 1986. John Kuhn is hardly a traditional FB anyway. more like an H-back who also runs

by hasay on Dec 28, 2011 5:10 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, we had John Kuhn before the Packers

Kuhn was one of the final cuts going into the 2007 season, but looking back at that year reveals that we did have two (yes, two!) FBs on the initial 53-man roster to start that season. One of them – Carey Davis – is not recalled wistfully by many around here, but the other – Dan Kreider – was a real blocking FB.

In hindsight, of course we can say that we should have kept Kuhn over Davis (Davis was a coaching favorite because of his hands, even though we learned he couldn’t do much once the ball was in his hands). Kuhn’s skillset was somewhere between Davis and Kreider, but there’s no way we would’ve kept all three of them, and I guess five years ago Kuhn did not prove himself to be straight up better than either of the others.

But even today, I’m not sure why Kuhn is a Pro Bowl caliber player. The Packers rushing offense is the 6th worst in the league – though maybe Kuhn’s blocking is keeping their running game from being deeper in the basement. I know he’s been a fan-favorite in Green Bay for a few years, but I’m just not convinced he’s a blocking FB of the same caliber as Vonta Leach.

In all honesty, the fullback position in its traditional sense should no longer be worthy of a Pro Bowl spot if we are to most accurately reflect the game as it is today. The Pro Bowl roster and voting should probably be revised to better reflect the prevalence of h-backs or two-TE sets, instead of maintaining the fullback spot out of tradition and trying to shoehorn h-backs in there just to fill out the ballot without actually adjusting the category/explicit criteria to accurately represent the nominees.

When I was filling out my ballot(s), I had no idea who to vote for as the NFC’s fullback. Eventually I settled on Michael Robinson of the Seahawks because I assumed that he must be doing a decent job for Marshawn Lynch to be going wild. I bet you that most voters (fans/players/you name it) reached that part of the ballot and decided to vote for Kuhn just because he’s a Packer (winning teams always get a bump/benefit of the doubt like that).

I understand your sentiment, but I can’t chalk this up as a direct failing of Bruce Arians.

As a side note – we did not actually draft Kuhn (he was a UDFA).

Yeah I remember that year. Davis was supposed to be the more athletic FB that could replace DK once he was out. DK was one of the best fullbacks, and paved the way for the Bus for several years. I’ve missed him since he left.

Look what Vontae Leach does for the Ravens, or Mack Strong did for the Seahawks. Even if your back ISNT a bruiser, a GOOD FB helps a lot.

To be honest with you guys, I think Ike is great, but as to if he deserves to play in the Pro Bowl...

First of all, I love Ike as our cornerback…we would never be where we are without him taking on opponents’ best receiver week in week out….

But I think Ike gives up penalties, and does get beat once in a while…

I think Jonathan Joseph and Revis are deserving….as for the third CB I would go with probably Brandon Flowers instead of Champ Bailey or Ike…

Now that said…I do think Ike has played tremendously this season, but I still think the combination of his fair share of errors and lack of picks has resulted in a non-Pro Bowl for him..

by stoco40 on Dec 28, 2011 5:16 AM EST reply actions

On my ballot(s)

I omitted Revis just so I could vote for Joseph, Ike, and Flowers. I was impressed by what I saw of Flowers when we played the Chiefs and when they played the Chargers a few weeks earlier in that Monday Night game.

I would love for Ike to get more recognition, as would befit his value to our team, but I also do agree with you about his shortcomings. Sometimes he does get beat and sometimes he does guess wrong and get caught out of position. However, I have to balance that with the fact that I’ve seen almost all of Ike’s defensive snaps this year and relatively few of most of the other top CBs snaps that are not on highlight reels.

In the end, I feel like I’m encouraged to be a homer when filling out my ballot(s) and I’ll probably vote for Ike so long as his name is on there.

I’ve watched him in a few games this year, dudes a stud for his slightly undersized build but man he has agility and a nose for the ball. Great at breaking up passes.

Glad to see...

Wallace and Brown get there recognition but all in all..I think the Pro Bowl is a joke and I have not watched a game since Woodson played as a Steeler.
Rather watch the players compete like they did back in the day with the fastest, stongest and obsticle course competitions like they did back in the day.

Exactly

I am more concerned about them getting the All-Pro team correct than I am the Pro-Bowl.

And remember people, the players and coaches are counting as 2/3 of the votes as well, so Ray Lewis getting picked is obviously a result of their thinking as well, not just the fans.

Flacco has to trust his receivers to make catches, but shouldn’t throw towards coverage. He needs to attack deep more often, but shouldn’t hold onto the ball so long. He needs to show more awareness in the pocket and move to extend plays, but nothing good comes of him leaving the pocket. He should run with the ball if nobody’s open, but he definitely can’t run with the ball.

Flacco should have the awareness of Roethlisberger, the elusiveness of Vick, the control of the offense of Manning, the leadership of Brady, the accuracy of Brees, and the arm strength of … Flacco? - Ampallang

How in the world did Pouncey make it then?

OL usually go off of draft status when selecting these things. If you were a first round pick and have Merrill Hoge sucking your nipples all year long, you get in.

I really doubt that coaches and players get 2/3 of the vote when Pouncey and Ray get in over much more deserving candidates.

Even if players and coaches get a vote.....

Do you think every NFC team watches tape on Baltimore? No of course not. They watch tape on the four AFC teams that they play that year and visa versa.

Plus you have to consider how much thought these guys actually put into the voting process, especially for guys in the opposite conference. I can’t imagine James Harrison puts alot of thought into who are the NFC Pro Bowl wide receievers or safeties or whatever. It just doesn’t effect them enough to care

Like I said, be more concerned with who is chosen for All-Pro. The Pro Bowl means nothing really but a chance to see a bunch of the games all time greats line up and have some fun.

The AP All Pro selection is what counts, those actually mean something.

When are we just going to accept the process for what it is

Older, veteran establish players in every single professional sports league make it to their version of the Pro Bowl many years after their level of play drops significantly. Guys like Cal Ripken Jr, Derek Jeter, Ray Lewis, Alan Faneca and so on and so on (including our very own beloved Troy) will make the Pro Bowl or All Star game until they retire. Accept it and move on.

And in the end, who freaking cares, it’s an exihibition game that no one even watches. These players and this team are about winning silver trophies with a football on top, not about free trips to Hawaii.

Go big or go home!!

Bah!

I always figured the pro bowl was a popularity contest. Ike was never nationally known, and neither is Keisel, thus not enough votes.

I also think playing the pro bowl before the Super bowl is stupid.

Chris Kemoeatu is third alternate

That is the best joke I’ve heard all year! He’s been demoted to backup on a mediocre Oline and he somehow makes it as a third alternate while Ike Taylor whos had an outstanding year, stays home.

The Pro Bowl is a gargantuan, titanesque, “high octane” JOKE!

shirley, you cant be serious. No way in hell should Kemo even have a single vote.

Dead serious

Is it any wonder the team did not advertise this?
