Narrow Escape

In a game that looked more like the tussle in KC a couple weeks ago than last week's rout of the Bengals, the Steelers made things look difficult for most of the game until Antonio Brown snagged a pass from Ben and showed the nation why he has become perhaps the team's most dangerous, if not speediest, WR.

I know this game will be analyzed quite a bit in the coming 10 days before we face San Francisco, but here are my players of the game and some thoughts about the near-loss of our QB.

Star-divide

1. Big Ben: Everyone's heart sank through the floor when we saw Ben lying on the turf grimacing in pain. Steeler Nation saw the entire season flash before its eyes. What a huge lift when, after the halftime break, we see Ben warming up on the sidelines and hobbling back out onto the field. More than a few fans felt that putting Ben back in the game was risky and unnecessary, but in his post-game press conference, MT described the injury as a high-ankle sprain and said that the Steelers' team doctor had cleared Ben to return. Ben, of course, wanted to go back in and, as cold as Charlie Batch appeared after scarcely playing this season, Tomlin obviously felt the team had a better chance to win with Ben in the game. This guy undoubtedly is tougher than any QB most of us have ever seen. Even in his hobbled state, Ben finished with 280 yds. passing and a QB rating of 129.6. "Incredible" is the only word for it.

2. Willie Gay: Gay made several big plays in the secondary, including his game-clinching pick in the 4th quarter. He continues to improve and confound his former critics.

3. Jason Worilds: Worilds is starting to look like another monster Steeler LB in the making. He made the most of his starting assignment and was all over the field against the Browns, usually in just the right position to make the plays. By far his strongest performance yet.

4. Antonio Brown: Besides a costly dropped pass on a key 3rd down play in the second half, AB was practically unstoppable. He finished the game with 151 yards on 5 receptions for a stratospheric 30.2-yd. average. A 79-yd. catch and run for a TD late in the 4th quarter once again showcased #84's exceptional moves in space and deceiving speed.

5. Rashard Mendenhall: 76 yards on 18 carries for a 4.2-yd. average including some tough running up the gut. Redman fans might not be thrilled, however, that Mendy got the ball three times more often than #33 in this game, including his series of unsuccessful runs inside the 5 yard line.

On the game thread, more than one of our regular BTSC posters observed (correctly I believe) that this was an ugly, ugly exhibition of pro football. The Steelers fumbled the ball away twice to halt excellent drives in the Red Zone and then we failed to kick the FG when MT opted to go for the TD on 4th and goal. This is another one of those games that should never have been close but, as late as the 4th quarter, we were still worried about a possible Browns upset.

Overall, I felt that the Browns defense played even better against us than the Chiefs did in KC. They were tackling the football all night long and beating up our OL throughout most of the game. The Chiefs D had been sound, but they didn't make the kind of splash plays that the Browns defense was making. So the way I view this game, we had a chance to put the Browns away early, but we shot ourselves in the foot. These early misfires only increased the confidence of the Browns D as the game wore on. I really believe, however, this might have been the most inspired game that Cleveland's D has played all season.

Finally, a couple of observations on the injury to Ben. He was injured on the typical, never-say-die type of play that we've seen many times before. This reminds me of the old schoolyard games where the biggest guy on the field would play QB and he'd keep trying to find an open receiver, even with 3 or 4 guys hanging on his back. Unfortunately, however, this is the NFL, not the sandlot. On the fateful play, Ben tried to extend the action well beyond any reasonable time, allowing the Browns' defenders to double back and nail him from behind. Ben should have dumped the ball or run out of bounds well before he was hit. In fact, that particular play should be required viewing in NFL training camps as a prime example of how not to keep your QB healthy. In this one regard, Ben often is his own worst enemy.

The fact that Ben came back in the second half and we didn't lose him for the season should be no occasion for beating our chests or pretending that our QB is the Incredible Hulk (even though he often acts like it). On the contrary, this should stand as a sober warning to the entire Steeler organization. Yes, Ben is one big, tough hombre. Yes, he makes some spectacular plays when extending the action. But we just came within a gnat's eyelash of losing Ben and watching our entire 2011 season go straight down the drain.

Is it too much to ask, then, that we take some measures in preparing for our final three regular season games that will safeguard #7, even if he doesn't care about protecting himself. If Ben is able to play at all in San Francisco, he's unlikely to be anywhere near 100%. So we need a game plan for the 49ers that takes the pressure off Ben and doesn't expose him to further abuse. Player with injuries like Ben's can get more serious injuries when they're hobbling or otherwise favoring it.

Bottom line: I'd much rather see the Steelers go into the playoffs as a Wild Card team with a healthy Ben, than to win the division and lose #7 in the process. If that means we start Batch in San Francisco and perhaps lose another game, so be it. Thursday night's narrow escape should be a reminder that this team shouldn't expect any more lucky breaks this season involving our QB. If we keep trying to ride a lame horse until he keels over, we might as well start comparing our 2012 mock draft picks because we won't get anywhere near another SB appearance this season.

Great Read.

I’ve been waiting so long for Ben to learn when to give up on a play, but it’s pretty safe to say he isn’t changing. So be it. It’s fun to root for the gunslinger who never gives up and I decided to just enjoy that while it lasts instead of pulling out my hair every time he steps in front of the barrel.

As for the 49ers game…I agree that a healthy Ben in the playoffs is more important than which seed we are, but something in me really wants to see them squash San Fran like a bug. It must be the combination of their fans arrogance/trash talk and their coach being ratbird related.

That being said, Charlie looked really bad tonight. We could chalk it up to circumstance and being cold, but if they sit Ben for this next game I’d really rather see Dixon start. At least that way we could design a game plan centered around his legs. And why the hell was he inactive anyway? Ben is playing with a fractured thumb and our only backup option is 37 year old Batch?

-You're welcome.

Yea I think it’s safe to safe eight years into his career that this part of his game will never go away. It’s a huge part of his game and probably the best part. Hopefully it won’t cut too many years off the end of his career b/c that punishment has to add up at some point. But then again, who knows, Peyton is the anti-Big Ben and his career may already be over.

But since we accept his style of play...

…isn’t it encumbent upon the FO to have a quality back-up QB active and ready to play.

No knock against Charlie Batch; I admire him and honor him for his efforts and dedication to the team and the City of Pittsburgh, but come on, he is 37 years old. I know Lefwich is on IR, but is Dixon so bad that he can’t be readied? If he is so bad, isn’t there any other alternative?

I gladly accept this ugly win. I would have mourned the loss, railing against the defense, but would have understood the loss, had Ben not been able to come back, but would not have been able to accept the loss if it was because we had no credible back up QB. If we’re going to ride this style of play, we must anticipate times when the Big wheel falls off.

Is DD an option?

He doesn’t dress anymore?

Didn’t he get injured earlier in the year, has he recovered? I would like to have had DD ready to go in, if BB hadn’t been able to return in the second half. But DD was no where to be found. They were saying Hines was our 3rd qb and Batch was lookin a little shaky out there.

Honestly, my whole playoff life flashed before my eyes, when BB went down. Hope he is ready to go in SF. We are gonna need him, if we hope to get the win. CB or DD and especialy HW ain’t getting that done.

Good read

You are right, I was stunned when I saw that play. I thought BB was done for the game if not the season. But if there was any doubt about BB toughness (which I wouldn’t know why) it shouldn’t exist now! Outside of that injury, let’s hope Pouncey’s isn’t bad so we can move Bronco back to LG as Kemo looked absolutely horrid. What, 4 penalties for 50 yards, I believe?

Narrow Indeed

Good write-up! Not sure I agree this was as ugly as the KC game. We generally looked flat, unprepared & like an average NFL team vs KC.

What I saw last nite was a cleaveland team playing a road game, w little but pride on the line (4 them), w an undersized, inexperienced QB & much less talent around him – not > than 2 household name players (f that many) – and still manage to, not only make a game of it, but actually hv a chance 2 win until about 3 min left n the 4th qtr. For the majority of the game, these guys gave as good as they got, n an obviously hostile environment, & sometimes gave more.

Yes, those 2 fumbles n the red-zone by, of all ppl, Hines & Heath on consecutive possessions bordered on the unbelieveable, as it would on any team considered 2b n serious contention 4 a championship run. I ve decided 2 consider both of them as uncharacteristic flukes & a testiment 2 the physical manhandling the browns were dishing out, @ that time. They were clearly NOT n a bidness as usu mood & knew they would need TO’s 2 hv a shot.

The monumental efforts I saw n the 2nd half, particularly from the players u’ve mentioned, separate this game from the KC fiasco. Even the OL, which, IMHO, was n no way responsible for BB’s injury, stepped their game up to keep BB (almost) untouched n the 2nd half. No, they didn’t make big play after big play, I only saw a couple of “splash” plays. But what they did, better than any game i’ve seen this season, was regroup behind their (nearly) indestructable leader & resolve to take care of bidness in their house! Instead of trying 2 run out the clock, they went 4 a stomp to the throat that left no doubt what the outcome of the game would b.

Now that’s Steeler football!

The chance 2 learn from ur shortcomings & grow out of ur disappointments is 1 of the richest opportunities u can ever experience. When u can bring urself 2b grateful 4 ur problems u`ll begin 2 harvest their positive value. Life can b difficult; but out of that difficulty grows the potential 4 meaning & beauty. N each disappointment is the seed of fulfillment. learn what it has 2 teach & u`ll b moving urself 4ward.

Congrats to the Steelers on a gritty performance

but boo to the refs for a badly officiated game.

Wallace didn’t look like he was down on that dive into the endzone. Do the refs have access to replays that the TV networks don’t?

Kemo screws up enough without getting called for holding when he didn’t hold (his second penalty was bogus). Harrison on the other hand was getting mugged without penalties getting called.

I suspect Harrison will get dinged by the league for the hit on McCoy in spite of the fact that McCoy was a RB at the time the hit occurred. Harrison got jobbed of a sack when Colt was called for throwing the ball away even though Colt was clearly down before the call.

This league is beginning to resemble WWE. If it doesn’t get it’s act together it will become just as relevant.

It was a bad call, clearly, from every angle...

…and is just another example of how even the League is unable to clearly define what a “catch” is, or is unable to teach that definition to its rag tag collection of part-time refs.

Frankly, I’ll gladly trade losing that call, for the non-call we got against Worilds. For the second game in a row, he got up into an opposing QB’s face (on sideline this time), woofed something, then gave a “pat” to the QB’s helmet. This time though, Jason did it right in front of the Ref (Hochili [sic]), who was dying to pull that flag out, but for some inexplicable reason did not (he will be fined and sanctioned by the League office for that, I’m sure).

Also missed were the myriad of holds against Worilds Harrison, and others; not holds in the trenches, but out in the open, in plain sight, yet went uncalled.

But the refs sure could find Kemo quickly enough to flag him at every opportunity. Kemo just has to go; we cannot afford more lost scores due to his inability to play smart.

by PaVaSteeler on Dec 9, 2011 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

I assume

that Worilds didn’t say anything snarky or unsportsmanlike and that’s why there was no call.

I also think that the collision (Foote?) with McCoy out of bounds and the 15 yd penalty was not deserving of a personal foul. It did not seem like a hit, but rather that their paths intersected as they were trying to slow down.

I thought I saw many more Kemo holds that could have been called. I guess when you don’t get called for one, then you feel like you can hold all the time. At the end I think he was holding just to try to save Ben (but Kemo ended up stepping on Ben anyway).

by stylepoints on Dec 9, 2011 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

It was Farrior

and while he didn’t knock McCoy into the stands, it was a hit out of bounds and costly. I agree that once again this was a poorly, poorly officiated game. I don’t believe Wallaces’ knee actually touched the ground, but it was close enough that I couldn’t throw a Steeler “bullshit ref’s!” ball at the TV.

Right; no basis whatsoever for overturning the call on the field.

by Billy52 on Dec 9, 2011 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

The officiating crew did fine, yes, it may not have been their best performance but overall, they did well.

Wallace’s knee was down. You can see the grass move when his left knee went down to the ground.

I don’t remember which play the second penalty was, but Kemo is not doing well at all.

The flag and the fine that will most likely follow are both deserved. It doesn’t matter that McCoy had tucked the ball and ran toward the sideline for about 3-5 strides. The fact of the matter that he threw the ball and the second that he released the ball, he became a passer again and is awarded the protection by the letter of the rule. So, technically, he was not a RB at the time that the hit occurred. As for the sack, I don’t have any video, but I seem to remember that the ball was spotted further back from the start of that play. I believe they threw a flag for intentional grounding since the pass did not reach the line of scrimmage. As for his knee being clearly down before the throw, you have to realize that is difficult to determine in full speed, without the luxury of instant replay and slow motion.

I will say that the Neutral Zone infraction that they called on Keisel was incorrect, it should have been a penalty on the Tackle or TE that flinched.

I’m with LV Steelers Fan, I’m not sure there was definite evidence that the ball hit the ground on AB’s catch, or that he lost control of the ball for that matter. I don’t agree with Ed’s decision to overturn the ruling on the field. It is what it is, everyone sees things a little different.

I am amazed at how well refs, umpires, etc do in game conditions. The refs don’t call it the same, game to game, or within a game, and I blame the League for the confusion, not always the refs.

by steeler fever on Dec 9, 2011 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

I’d like to know why McCoy went back in the game. He said he didn’t remember the hit. If he was concussed, then the Brownies violated league rules. I think Harrison should be fined $15K, but no more, and no suspensions. It’s his first offense this year after the “rules” have been “explained” and “clarified.” ESPN is being melodramatic about the who thing, but I do think Deebo had some anger after the Browns deliberately went after BR’s legs, causing his injury. I would almost call that a legal dirty hit.

I also think the A Brown catch was not a catch (it clearly hit the ground before he had control) and Wallace’s knee touched the turf before the ball crossed the goal line.

Kemo’s face penalty was bogus, and they called more holding penalties on the steelers o-line than they did the Brownies o-line, which doesn’t make sense since we all know Harrison gets held on almost every play. That didn’t wash.

by IronJake on Dec 9, 2011 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

I respectfully disagree about the ruling for Antonio Brown’s catch. I do not think that there was enough visual evidence to overturn the ruling on the field. I think that they should have said that the play stands. Because of the camera angles and the location of Antonio Brown’s body when he went down to catch the ball, I do not think that there was indisputable visual evidence as that is what is required to overturn a ruling on the field. In my opinion you have to stick with the ruling on the field.

For all the Kemo haters ...

Yes, I totally agree with you. But let’s not forget also that he was our best looking lineman in the KC game, where he came in and played very well. He also held his own in Cincy, I think, against a very good DL. And frankly, as bad and inconsistent as he can be, I’d rather see him out there than Trai Essex.

by Tequila0341 on Dec 9, 2011 9:22 AM EST reply actions

Kemo could be a good OL if he didn't let his emotions get the best of him.

He is his own worst enemy out there. Also, he’s pretty solid as a run blocker but doesn’t have the footwork down to keep position on the more aggressive DL guys.

by Billy52 on Dec 9, 2011 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

He also needs to lose 30 lbs and start stretching

Kemo is struggling because he isn’t that good to begin with but also because he is not in shape. He can’t move his feet and coordinate his movement versus the defender. He has poor balance and is turning into a really bad waist-bender. Guys bend at the waist because they don’t have flexibility in their hips and legs. When you get fat and out of shape, your legs go first.

If you watch closely on the plays where he pulls, he is falling down most of the time at impact. Kemo got a reputation in the media as a great pulling guard. He was never great, maybe average for awhile. He is noted as a pulling guard because he plays left guard. The LG pulls on the O Power play to the right which the Steelers have used forever. They run this play to the right almost exclusively, therefore he gets noticed.

On the series where the Steelers failed to score on 4th down, Gocong had at least two plays where he drilled the runner in the hole. Why? Nobody blocked him – that’s a problem.

Too bad we dont have Bettis anymore.

If anyone could wipe that silly grin off of Gocong’s face and plant his ass in the end zone , it’s Jerome.

by Billy52 on Dec 9, 2011 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

I was really impressed with Worilds, dude was everywhere

He was a terror off the edge and very solid against the run as well. If he’d been wearing #92, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference between the two.

- I know this thread isn’t a to rave about opponents but if we’re looking for a stop gap ILB next offseason, in case Farrior retires or something, we could do alot worse than D’Qwell Jackson. That guy we a beast last night and he’s gotta be one of the better ILB’s that you never hear a word about. I was surprised he’s only 28 too.

you dont hear about him because he effectively spent the last 2 years on IR for pectoral injuries if i remember correctly

yea he's missed a ton of time in 09 and 10

but when he’s on the field he’s a tackling machine

Worilds looked good!

He is coming on strong in relief of The Wood.

though he still needs to bulk up a bit and work on his pass coverage.

Good point

Going in, I had a bad feeling about this game and was actually worried that Ben might get hurt in this kind of matchup. Just relieved that he survived that hit.

by Billy52 on Dec 9, 2011 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

We don’t know anything yet. He could be out for weeks.

by IronJake on Dec 9, 2011 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Well, if it's more serious than reported, MT is going to look pretty bad.

At his post-game press conference, he said Ben had a high ankle sprain and he got the team doctor’s clearance to go back in the game. I tend to trust Mike on this.

"Great teams find a way to win and bad teams can't finish the game."

I think Mayock said it. As wins go, it again wasn’t a thing of beauty but I’ll take it, thank you very much.

If I had to choose one series that annoyed me the most it would have to be the inability to punch the ball over the goal line…. from less than 1 yard out…. 4 times. Leaving those 6 points on the field was wrong on so many levels. Fix it.

Heath and Hines…. 2 fumbles. It’s ok. I ain’t mad atcha. Just don’t do it a-friggin-gain. M’kay?

Say what you will about Ben, but rarely does an athlete of his caliper come along: He’s a warrior, team-driven player and leader. He has paid his dues, earned his stripes and proven himself a “changed man”. I don’t know which one said it, Deion or Irvin… but whomever it was is absolutely correct: Ben needs to be mentioned anytime “Elite QB” is tossed around in conversation.

Kemo… my man, Kemo… pull your head out until you hear a loud pop and don’t play another game like that crap again. The guy behind you doesn’t need you to be yet another liability he has to deal with. Disappointed.

Shout out to the Cleveland defense: You did good… but ya ain’t there yet. Demoralizing defeat… and I’m glad you got it.

me too. although, admittedly, I deserved it. There’s only so much of the “you condone rape and wife beating” you can take before before you start making a joke out if and playing along with it to piss them off more. No big deal though. Of all division rival sites, theirs has been by far the least enjoyable. I had 3 comments there before the thread, and wasn’t planning on ever going there again anyway. I have never experienced a more miserable group of people in my life.

I saw what PaVa did too. That’s just a sign of how pathetic they are, because what he did was nothing.
They are good at talking their junk, but if anyone talks back, they get all sore, take their ball, and go home. Pathetic

sorry man. What I meant was…you didn’t really do anything that I saw as “banworthy” You were just rubbing it in a little, but, if someone did that on our site, they wouldn’t get banned for that type of stuff. They are just sensitive, angry, and bitter.

It was also nothing compared to what got me banned. As I said, after so many comments of “you approve/condone rape and wife beating” ….yeah…I played the part they wished for..

or…if you’d prefer. “you were the meanest and nastiest, you’re like the John Wayne/Clint Eastwood of SBNation”
Is that better? lol

actually, what comment specifically got you banned? I’ve read them, but I can’t tell which was the one that was “the last straw”, I didn’t look at the times

Frankly (no pun intended)...

…I think it was my second one, where I admitted (and thus was convicted of) to being a Troll. They didn’t have much in the way of patience or a sense of humor over there, so there were immediate calls for my banning, as well as for me to perform some anatomically impossible acts upon myself.

That’s alright, I’ll somehow manage to muddle through life with this stigma.

lol, no pun taken, however, I do see you say “Frankly” a lot, and I swear every single time I immediately think “he’s talking to me” when I see it.. Was actually going to say something about it earlier. Not in a “could you stop it” way, just to say every time you type that, It’s like a magnet to my eyes, lol

As far as them and their “patience and sense of humor” Yeah..no kidding.. they are only comfortable being the ones poking. As I said, they are miserable people. They don’t appreciate discussion, or counter points. You gotta imagine that it’s tough being a fan of a franchise that has no interest in putting a winning team on the field.

I hope you can manage though…It’s been extremely tough for me as well…

I’m not sure. But the moderator that was on me, did know that I had got a temporary ban at Pats Pulpit (which was completely undeserved, which was why the other guy unbanned me 2 minutes later) and that I had been warned at Field Guls (which was news to me, I can’t recall a problem there) As far as announcing our criminal pasts…I don’t think so..

I wasted an entire hour of my life watching some “wives” show (Atlanta based… housewifes of or basketball wives… one of those things) WELL….. you only think things are anatomically impossible for humans to do…. seems there’s a male stripper in Atlanta named “Ridiculous” that can do “just that”.

And lest we forget,
I really believe, however, this might have been the most inspired game that Cleveland’s D has played all season

this is a high-ranked defense overall, and particularly high against the pass.
