Will Roger Goodell Suspend Mark Sanchez In 2011?

Much was said last off season about the expolits of our "John Wayne" Quarterback named Ben Roethlisberger. It seems the rich and young Roethlisberger liked to go out and party with young women in college towns. One night some things went awry and got out of hand. No charges were brought but Big Ben suffered a lot of embarrassment and a lot of criticism including by me. Ben was not charged or convicted of anything but was suspended for 6 games by Roger Goodell for conduct unbecoming or some other reason.

Star-divide

Now word comes out that around New Years Mark Sanchez had a tryst with a 17 year old teenage girl. He thought she was of age but she was not. Sources claim he continued to call her sometimes as late as 2 AM on school nights looking to hook up. I am not sure when he figured out she was too young. Point is, Ben did not commit a crime. In this case it appears Sanchez unknowingly or knowingly did. What is the suspension? Your thoughts?

however

at first glance i would say that if ben got suspended, sanchez should too.

by hasay on Feb 10, 2011 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

Why should Sanchez be suspended?

Sanchez didn’t do anything illegal and it’s not even that uncommon….When I was 17 my boyfriend was 23 years old, my mom wasn’t exactly thrilled about it but it really isn’t that big of a deal.
I knew this was going to happen but you can’t compare Ben to Mark…This girl is not claiming Mark did something to her that she didn’t want done. She’s not even claiming she had sex with Sanchez. It’s sad because athletes are now prime targets for media scrutiny for the things that have been going on for years. I really wish we could go back to the days before camera phones and twitter. Mark should learn that he needs to be more low key when he does his business because the media is just waiting to pounce on anything he does.

It's not statutory rape...17 is legal in most states

It may not look good but it is legal

yes, exactly

wild incorrect facts being thrown around by those who nothing about the law. age of consent is 16 in NJ and CT and 17 in NY. there are romeo and juliet laws where the age difference matters in order for a 13 year old to have sex with a 15 year old and it not be considered a crime. once you reach consent, a 99 year old can have sex with a 17 year old and it is not rape if consent is 17. there may be extenuating facts, like in CT where consent is 16 but if you are a teacher or in position of authority then you have to wait until the age of 18.

lawrence taylor had sex with a 16 year old in Suffern, NY (not NJ) where the age of consent is 17 which is considered “rape in the 3rd degree.”

ben was accused and investigated for a crime, sanchez is not b/c there is no crime at this point. if more information comes forward then there may be something to discuss but at this point he just looks a little strange b/c there have to be many girls out there for him.

Unless I am missing something

It happened in New Jersey and the age of consent in NJ is 16.

And a river runs through makes the difference? There’s an old Patti Page song from the early 50s called “Cross Over the Bridge” that includes the lyrics:

If you’re a guy who’s had a gal in each and every port
And you forgot the rules of love that life has always taught
And if you broke as many hearts as ripples in a stream,
Well, brother, here’s the only way that you can be redeemed:

Cross over the bridge, cross over the bridge
Change your reckless way of livin’, cross over the bridge
Leave your fickle past behind you,
And true romance will find you,
Brother, cross over the bridge

If you have built a boat to take you to the greener side,
And if the boat is built of every lie you ever lied,
You’ll never reach the Promised Land of Love, I guarantee
‘Cause lies cannot hold water and you’ll sink into the sea

Cross over the bridge, cross over the bridge
Change your reckless way of livin’, cross over the bridge
Leave your fickle past behind you,
And true romance will find you,
Brother, cross over the bridge

I know it isn’t easy to resist temptation’s call
But think of how your broken heart will hurt you when you fall
‘Cause someday you will find that you are hopelessly in love
And she’ll belong to someone else as sure as stars above

Cross over the bridge, cross over the bridge
Change your reckless way of livin’, cross over the bridge
Leave your fickle past behind you,
And true romance will find you,
Brother, cross over the bridge
Cross over the bridge

I’m not sure how this applies to Sanchez’s situation. From all reports the girl is not claiming she was raped. And it is also not statutory rape as we explained.

by John Stephens on Feb 10, 2011 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

True, but

the age difference can be no more than 4 years (meaning she is 17 and he can be no older than 21) same as in Ohio. So, technically, it would be statutory rape, plus a number of other charges… corruption of a minor, taking a minor across state lines, etc. This could put the man in a world of hurt, it all depends on the mother (she could be in trouble too).

ah i see

helps to get all the facts. well then maybe this is a big deal.

by theatrain on Feb 10, 2011 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

incorrect

OH consent is 16, which means at that age they can choose to have sex with a partner of any age. you are confusing romeo and juliet laws with this, a 13-16 year old can consent to sex with someone if they are under 18, but a 19 year old and a 13 year old is considered statutory rape.

separately, the age of majority is 18 so parents still have control. if the girl got pregnant then if they might ask the DA to charge “contributing to delinquency of a minor.” but in any case, a 17 year old can have sex with any age partner in NY, NJ, CT or OH and it is totally legal unless it is a teacher, coach, clergy, etc. (position of authority).

Protocol has been set

BB was suspended for conduct that undermined or put at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.

How is the Sanchez situation different?

One girl cried rape after a night of underage drinking. The other lied about her age to have sex with an NFL quarterback.

In my opinion, neither man did anything wrong. Once the protocol was set, Goddell can’t pick and choose anymore. The bar has been set.

It’s not that it’s illegal, it’s how it makes the NFL look. The image is the important thing according to Roger. But if Favre can send naked pictures of himself to a woman who complained yet the NFL did nothing, what do you expect from the posterboy of partisanship concerning a mainstream, big market boy with a past involving similar questionable behavior? He did say it didn’t happen and wouldn’t happen again and I imagine that’s good enough for the New York fans, Roger and those who BBQ’d Ben.

But no one is singling out the Steelers. There are just different standards for different cities and teams….and certain players…and certain coaches (N.E.). But the cheerleaders can dress as skimpy as possible and that’s ok.

by steel.curtain.number2 on Feb 10, 2011 2:15 PM EST reply actions

No chance he gets suspended

1) The age of consent is 16 in NJ.
2) It was consentual.

by Norcal_Roxy on Feb 10, 2011 2:42 PM EST reply actions

We’re not talking legal or illegal. We’re looking at it from the point of the NFL’s purity clause and what they worry the public will think. And if the NFL thinks it’s ok for a 24 year old spotlight QB in their “employ” to date a high school girl, then that’s fine. But there are a lot of people who may feel differently and the NFL certainly doesn’t want to offend them.

This may be a little tacky but, what if Ben while in New york or New Jersey takes a 17 year old high school girl to his NY Apartment? There wouldn’t be enough paper to print the outcry.

By the way, if Sanchez is a resident of New York or NJ, then I would think the laws apply to him (no statutory rape). But if he’s a resident of a state that says under 18 and that’s a crime, then what? Does that mean any guy from any state can go to NJ and pick up 16 year olds? That’s pretty pathetic. I’m sure a lawyer would have a field day with that.

I’m pretty sure the statutory laws are different in other countries, too. Would that give NFL football players visiting those countries carte blanche to pick up younger girls if that’s the custom? The NFL may find that rather embarrassing but since it’s legal…hey, who cares?

But int he end, the media will ignore it and so will the NFL. They can only have so many people watching Ben and they do have that “thing” to take care of in Dallas.

by John Carter on Feb 10, 2011 3:07 PM EST reply actions

Look to the Lawrence Taylor case

The prostitute was 16, which is the age of consent in that state. However, he was charged with Statutory rape and Solicitation of a minor (he was able to plea to lesser charges of course).

However, if your remember the political and law pundits talking they brought up the fact that even though she was of the age of consent the age can be no more than 4 years difference. Furthermore, since this girl resides in Connecticut we must ask how she got to Sanchez’s apartment. If he drove to her state and picked her up to take her to his place without the mothers permission he is in violation of several laws. The Mother could also be in hot water here.

Ultimately… I plan on returning the favor and pointing this out the next time i hear about Roethlisberger’s indiscretions.

wrong

talyor had sex with a 16 year old in a Suffern, NY where the age of legal consent is 17. many people here have no idea what the laws actually are.

the romeo and juliet laws apply when a person is under the age of consent, i.e. a 13 year old with a 17 year old. there are cases where legal consent age is not valid, i.e. a teacher or coach may need to wait until the student is 18 or even 21 in some states.

the legal consent age almost always protects you from statutory rape.

this girl is living the life you see on MTV

she comes from a very wealthy family, parents divorced both cheated on each other. mom (we would probably call her a cougar) is known to hang out at NY clubs (even with her daughter) so it’s not surprising that she got involved with Sanchez., she is just doing following her mom’s example.

Sanchez should have passed on this girl or waited until she was a little older. she is too young (still in HS) to have media chasing after her and she is most likely not able to handle it. with that being said, now she can roll this fame into a reality show or something like that, maybe she is the next Hilton or Kardashian.

When he and his wife were dating her folks got pissed and filed a complaint and the years difference in there age made it statutory rape.

In light of the 'new" conduct policy..

that caused Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension, yes. I think considering he was arrested for sexual assault while at USC, he should be suspended if the rules are to be equally enforced.

However, I don’t think there will be any repercussions to mr. sanchez’s behavior.

by IronJake on Feb 10, 2011 4:48 PM EST reply actions

i would agree if

this girl was 16 and he had sex with her in NY like lawrence taylor where you need to be 17. but what has he done wrong here? many guys like younger girls. many like older women.

this is similar to ben riding without his helmet, it may not be smart but what did he do wrong? i think riding without your helmet may be a misdemeanor crime, in sanchez case there is no possible crime at this point and no one is accusing him. sanchez probably should have passed on this girl and got one that was at least 18, but if he is willing to put up with the scrutiny then so be it. i wouldn’t doubt that he called his lawyer and checked her ID before having sex with this girl.

if he is accused of a crime, then the league will definitely come down on him. they need more token white guys to beat up on to keep the black guys from complaining as they are going to come down even harder on them.

hook or crook, the NFL is going to get much tougher on crime. they do not ever want the perception that the league is filled with closet gangsters like vick or the late chris henry. there is no doubt in my mind that the next guy to get in real trouble (like gunplay or assault) is going to be in a world of hurt, like a full season ban. if that doesn’t work, the next guy will get two seasons. ben was the guy that allowed them to broadcast the message.

the message is loud and clear, white or black, QB, WR, or LT we can no longer put up with BS. you want to be involved in crime, do like OJ and wait until you’re retired, otherwirse we will retire you early.

Sanchez didn’t go in with a paid entourage of off-duty cops to help him isolate his prey. I would think any fair-minded Roethlisberger-lover would offer the same defense they did in holding him blameless: that it wasn’t up to him to make sure everybody in the club was of a certain age.

You mean the difference is like, one year? Whooooweeeee, big deal. Who gives a fuck what state they were in? The dude is cavorting with teenagers. Seventeen year olds. He’s in his twenties, and plays for a major, and I mean major market in the Jets. Apparently it made a big difference with Ben because I guess she was drinking alcohol. Funny how one year can be the difference between a four game suspension and getting him on TV as the up and coming quarterback.

Nobody cares about the facts when everybody likes the guy. Details suddenly make a difference when you don’t.

Bottom line is that he violated the conduct policy in having sex with a teenager. It makes the NFL and his team look like sex crazed pedophiles.

I mean, can’t this guy find normal women to date?

by IronJake on Feb 12, 2011 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

If this becomes a scandal, Sanchez will be suspended

The reason Ben was suspended ultimately had more to do with the fact that it became a big story, not what he did or didn’t do. Even if Sanchez were charged with a crime, which it appears he committed none, he will only be suspended if this blows up into a black eye on the league. Plenty of players were charged with various crimes last offseason, and not suspended. As maryrose pointed out in one his posts, they should have been treated the same way as Ben. But they weren’t. The difference? Ben’s story became national news, while those other stories were police blotters with no further coverage.

I think that what we’ve seen is that the NFL, like most of the media, is basically hypocritical.

For thine is The Steelers, the power and glory of climbing the STAIRWAY TO 7."

Can we please stop with posts like this?

I thought we all agreed that Roethlisberger getting suspended was the best thing for him?

Enough is enough! I’m tired of the comparisons. We all know Goodell won’t suspend Sanchez anyway.

"They are an awesome group to have on my side. And on Sundays I always feel a little bad for the other quarterback, but not too bad."-Ben Roethlisberger on the Steeler's Defense-
100% Authentic woman. Yes it's true. I looked it up on Google

That's what I love about these high school girls, man.

I get older, they stay the same age.

I pledge allegiance to the Terrible Towel and the only team in America, and to the franchise for which it stands, one nation under Rooney, indivisible, with the ability to crush you all.

"He was popping off down there the first time they were about to score. So you run your mouth, expect to get something. Everything's between the lines, so he got what he had coming. He was running his mouth and getting in the way of the train, and the train wasn't coming off the track."
